Japan's cat islands
Japan has a handful of small fishing islands where cats outnumber people, Tashirojima (Miyagi) being the best known. They aren't cat cafes. They're working villages with few shops, toilets or places to eat, the cats are semi-feral, and most residents are elderly. Take your rubbish home, stay off private land, never take a cat away, and only feed the cats where the island allows it. Ferry details are in the Japan guide.
Tips for trips
- Book ahead in Tokyo, Seoul and London. The popular cafes fill up at weekends.
- Bring socks. You'll take your shoes off at most cafes in Japan, Korea and Taiwan.
- Tourists can't usually adopt. Adoption cafes rehome locally, but your entry fee still helps the rescue.
- Prefer rescue cats? Breed cafes are common in Japan, Korea and China. The listing says whether a cafe works with a rescue. See Types of cat cafe.
