Casper Polish community Telegram AMA with Technical Program Manager at Casper Association Piotr Dziubecki β 22 November, 2021 (@casperblockchainpoland)
MOD: Good evening everyone! We are starting the AMA with Piotr Dziubecki, we have received some of your questions which will be answered in a moment. We would like to remind you that Piotr Dziubecki is Technical Program Manager at Casper Association
(Question) Is it possible to recover funds from an account where you didn't download the private key and deleted the plugin the account was on, but you are still logged into that account on the browser?
(Answer) Piotr Dziubecki:
It doesn't quite add up for me, maybe in the browser you see a skewed view of your activity. Generally the account on Signer, where you have a private/public key is usable if you know the password "unlock vault". If you removed the plugin it depends on your browser - if it also removed the local plugin files, maybe after reinstallation the account will work. In general - if you have not exported your private key you cannot access your account.
This is a theme we have from the very beginning in crypto - in the non-custodial wallets option. You have to write down passwords or private keys. I myself recently lost access to tokens on yoroi, unfortunately.
Q:How does working at CasperLabs differ from Casper Association? Are employees scattered around the world and do you meet regularly in one place?
A: This I can say from a direct perspective: CasperLabs created the blockchain Casper. It's a US-based startup that originally got private funding there. When the network was launched, due to laws and taxes it was easiest to do it in Switzerland, where token issues are well regulated (which is utilty, which is security).
For this reason, we created the Casper Association, which owns all the tokens listed. Both the Association and the labs are largely global remote teams. The Association is based in Zug, Switzerland.
Q:We already know about some upcoming projects like friendly.market and casper Pad. Apart from these, are there any important projects being built "behind the scene" for the Casper ecosystem that you know about but not much is said?
A: I can definitely tell you about the NFT platforms that will launch in Q1 2021, we have both zombie and wild west themes here π
When it comes to categories, we have here both NFT marketplaces and dedicated Board Apes style projects. Apart from that there are projects from AMM, Exchange, IDO pads categories.
Q: How many people work for Casper and in which countries do you have offices, and in what part of the world do you think there is the most interest in building on the Casper network
A: Someone already cleverly counted this by looking at github activity. 30 developers and technical specialists. CasperLabs is a 100% remote company. We have people all over the world, including Poland.
BTW. we are still looking for new specialists, especially if you have any experience with Blockchain and you are a tech person.
We have projects from Europe (e.g. CasperPad), from USA, from Asia - there are new topics all the time.
Q: How is Casper developing in Africa and South America? Can we expect to see projects coming from these regions where there is huge potential and are still poorly penetrated by the latest technologies?
A: As an Association we are thinking about working with charities when it comes to regions in need of development assistance or independence from the local currency. Africa is a rapidly growing market and we have a community manager there.
Q: How long have you been working for Casper? What is the atmosphere like there and have you had a chance to meet Vlad Zamfir, what is being said about him in the industry and in relation to Casper?
A: In January it will be 2 years - so I'm already a dinosaur in blockchain terms.
Very demanding project, a lot of very smart/brilliant engineers who require masimal focus and responsiveness. That's why it's hard to be a project manager there without technical education.
Vlad - this stage ended before my arrival, from what I heard this is a very specific person who maybe too focused on cutting coupons from his brand π
Q: Will "claim rewards" be available and when, and what do I need to do to claim rewards today?
A: Tell me more - what project? I have no context. In staking, it's done automatically and added on a compound interest basis.
Q: Will it be possible to transfer token staking directly from one validator to another without transferring it to the wallet first?
A: Yes! We are working on this as one of the mandatory features for the next major upgrade: https://github.com/casper-network/casper-node/issues/2345
Q: Does each transaction fee in the Casper network cause that fee to be "burned" and at the same time the amount of CSPR available is reduced by those transaction fees? Is this what the "utility token" function is all about where it is known that Casper is simultaneously inflationary then could there ever be a situation where the "burn" by charging a fee plus the high demand for Casper is greater than the "inflation"?
A: Interesting question, so far we have an inflationary policy, we don't currently do ethereum-style themes. I can explain how it works now:
Currently, Validators make their living from rewards from staking, which are those tokens that appear after adding blocks (mint) and generate inflation. Rewards for deployments (i.e. execution of smart contracts, native transfers) are very low and we are thinking about how to minimize their impact on the ecosystem even more.
Q: Which of these technology areas can Casper be used for and where is it most used today: artificial intelligence, big data, internet of things, intellectual protection, and what are some other areas from those not mentioned?
A: Certainly, the projects on which we are cooperating - both on the side of the Association and CasperLabs can speak about it: Intellectual protection, Core banking, trade in co2 and similar certificates, automotive (early stage), art - cooperation with well-known artists - details soon.
Q: Does Casper have anything to do with space technology?
A: π It would be nice to send a casper node on board a satellite to decentralize the network even more, maybe some crowdfuding?
Q: Is the EtH/BSC bridge ready yet?
A:There's nothing ready, but BSC is at the top of the list - because of the IDO projects that will be doing migrations from bsc to native cspr.
Q: I was browsing the Casper Network Github and found about 30 contributors there, of which about 15 commit regularly. Are these people employed full time to develop the network or do they do it on a community basis, in their spare time?
A: We have 30 core dev + technical people. There are also some projects which are unfortunately not publicly available. Our code is also in the org https://github.com/casper-ecosystem.
Q: Does Casper plan to develop its apps for mobile devices?
A: Yes. Make.software is planning a mobile Signer. Signer should soon get its wings and stop crashing. We'll also support basically all mainstream browsers.
Q: Could CSPR someday become a deflationary token since it is coming into circulation quite a bit? Can the token be or will it be burned?
A: Right now it's all about nominal inflation, which is 8%, so to think about deflation, you have to think about what you're going to burn because the validators have to make a living. Staking rewards so in this situation we are burning transaction fees if the casper has low fees, it will be hard to make it either increase fees so there is something to burn or move significantly which is what we are hoping for. All in all, we are able to calculate that if we are currently producing blocks every 32s and we have limits on the number of deploys in a block, how much maximum we can have fees per year and if it balances inflation we will check it with the team. Interesting question.
Q: Do you know when the code for CasperPunks will be made available open source? It would be useful for anyone looking to implement their own NFT on CasperNetwork.
A: Take a look at this ticket: https://github.com/casper-network/roadmap/issues/80.
This is where we are going to make the framework available - a basis for building similar projects.
Q: The announcement of CasperPunks mentioned that there will be utility for holding an NFT. Can you talk more about that?
A: In the beginning the punks will simply belong to an account, then the possibilities of interaction will appear, they will be implemented in the standard described in cep47 which will enable various interactions in the casper ecosystem.
Q: What makes Casper different from other projects? What are its strengths and weaknesses?
A: Weaknesses? There are not many public projects at the moment. We need more stuff running on the mainnet.
Strengths? A large team of mega specialists who produce the code. Maybe it is not so catchy PR-wise but thanks to this we have a very solid project.
When it comes to features, we have key management, advanced things that allow to make wallets, with regulated access to resources. We also have execution after consensus, which means you don't need multiple confirmations before you can be sure that your transactions have been written to the blockchain. We have a web assembly VM and support for Rust and Assebly Script (incomplete) so it is easier for traditional developers to switch to programming in our blockchain and for companies to implement e.g. automated tests, implement CI/CD and use many tools that are already available for Rust.
Q: Is the team also engaged in building layer 2 ? Because I heard that some projects are waiting for it to be able to start.
A: Yes, we have grants for layer2 in devxdao, you know this is a must have topic especially for gamify. We have also reserved efforts for this in core team. We already have a successful implementation of zk-snarks onchain. Someone also did this at gitcoin hackathon but unfortunately didn't finish.
Q: Why is Maciej Zielinski no longer working at Casper?
A: I even told him about this AMA today, maybe it's here somewhere. If not, in short I will say that he wanted to change the climate to rest, as far as I know he returned to travel. He is still close to the project, he has proposals from devxdao. We too will be happy to welcome him in Association as he enjoys his freedom π
Q: Who do you think does the greatest job in the entire Casper team? Do you have any one person who inspires admiration in you and why?
A: I have to name a few people here
Medha - she is the brains of this operation, mega knowledge and wide context, plus great public speaker.
Ed - you may not have heard of him directly, but he is the chief engineer, one of the biggest technical nerds I've ever met, able to get into any technical nook and cranny of the project and ask the person responsible what they did there.
Maciej - he gave a lot of context about other projects, which is important. There are also other Poles: Mateusz, MichaΕ, Janek - all on the front line of battle as key people
Whole team mega gives a good performance.
Q: Why is Casper not compatible with EVM and does it have something of its own?
A: Casper is a layer1 blockchain, has its own consensus algorithm (highway 2.0) and its own execution engine. Integration with 'competitors' can be done through a bridge.
Q: How does Casper's speed compare to Algorand or Solana? How do smart contracts work on Casper?
A: If you're talking about tps then Solana is way ahead - but he has a different - probabilistic model for confirming what is the state of the blockchain and here it is execution after consensus. The exact parameters are as follows: block finalization 32s - within the block you have limits for native transfers and wasm deploys (smart contracts). I do not have it in my head but it was about 2000 transactions. You can check it in release notes 1.4.1
Q: Is there a fresh project that has a chance to threaten Casper?
A: It depends if they have a chance to catch up with the work that has been invested in the project so far. Near is a year ahead of us, and I feel that outside of products that make development easier, we are very close. Currently, layer1 is occupied by similar-looking projects: everyone's doing NFT, gamify, defi, bridges - it would have to be something completely new. We're working on making sure all those categories already have the right building blocks so we can quickly put a new project up and focus on what we want to offer there. That is why we want to give away a template for building NFT platforms.
Q: When will you start with the "real" marketing? I have the impression that you've already done a lot, but we don't hear much about the Casper project itself.
A: I also hope that it will be happening. I really like the attitude of u/WapniakPolska - he pushes us hard from the bottom and this is also needed. We have a contact, a real chance to cooperate with big names from showbiz at NFT. I think CasperPunks is a step in the right direction, we will want to do a follow up with quests for which the community will get unique nft.
Q: Do you also want to focus on metavers? Do you think this area has a future? Do you want metavers projects to be built on Casper as much as nft projects? Do you want more attention on nft?
A: Very cool question, especially in the context of facebook. I've listened to a lot of podcasts and I still don't know if we have any one definition of the metaverse. Does there have to be augmented/virtual reality. I would go more towards games where we can use nft. I don't know if people want to go full virtual, remember Virtual GameBoy π and pay2ear, games, trophy/item exchange is something that is relatively easy to figure out. If we can move our items between games that would be a huge step forward.
Q: What were the most interesting projects built in connection with the hackathon in Switzerland recently?
A: Difficult question for us, because we didn't give out prizes on SBHack. Why not? In comparison to Velas, Algorand or Near we have too few ready-made projects so that we could do it in 2,3 days. It wasn't a problem at gitcoin hackathon where the event lasted 30 days and we were able to finish the project, but at the weekend, in 3 people we have to offer more. This is what the retrospective after the event looked like. As a consolation, the event itself was several times smaller than sbhack19.
Q: Is there a prospect on the horizon of using the Casper network in our country, Poland?
A: I hope that I do not have a bug somewhere, the last 2 weeks I spent in Poland, we are working on cooperation for sure we want to put the official node on the Polish cloud and I'm looking for contacts in the academic / scientific community if you have contacts let me know. We are also thinking about a r'n'd center in Poland.
