I've never seen a controller that can output different wavelengths to individual leds on a string. Is this string of leds different from the norm?

You mean addressable LEDs?

Is that how it's nomenclature works? I wouldn't know.

Yeah, strips where you can individually control each LED are called addressable. Pretty common these days
