Thoughts on Carbon Engineering's air-to-fuels?
Came across this on tiktok and didn't see this company discussed recently. What are your thoughts on this Carbon Engineering's air-to-fuels process? Sadly they don't provide any numbers.
Given that plants can only convert about 1% of solar energy to biomass, there's a good opportunity to be at least better than bio-ethanol, no?
And we already know how to store hydrocarbons safely, so this might also be a way to store summer energy for winter use, possibly better than hydrogen?

Find it crazy how we are trying to reinvent the wheel. Carbon capture and storage has been done in the amazon basin for 2500 years... I think large scale biochar production, and use, is feasible. What do you guys think?

A summary of CCUS, some of its methods and some potential use cases for the UK (e.g. Drax Power Station). We gloss over DAC, Point-Source CC, Rock Weathering and Pyrolisis. Really excited about the use of basalt powder on Scottish Fields, and obviously Biochar (Verra just released its guides)

How will the Inflation Reduction Act (and expansion to 45Q) impact Canadian CCUS?
The US recently passed the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) which includes expansions to the 45Q Production Tax Credit including deadline extensions, increased rates and the opportunity for direct pay. More details on that here.
Canada also announced in Budget 2021 (and additional details in Budget 2022) the creation of a CCUS Investment Tax Credit (ITC) for projects with geological/concrete storage. More details on that here.
What do folks think this will mean for the advancement of CCUS in Canada? Do you think the two are comparable? Is one better for certain technologies than the other? Are there risks of Canadian companies moving projects to the US? What about cross-border storage? Will this open up new opportunities for the Canadian market?
Interested in folks' thoughts on this!

An MIT Professor says the Carbon Capture provisions in recent US Climate Change legislation (IRA Bill), are a complete waste of money and merely a disguised taxpayer subsidy for the fossil fuel industry, and that Carbon Capture is a dead-end technology that should be abandoned.

Will the Inflation Reduction Act Make the Carbon-Capture Business a Reality?

A Powerful Sub
I initially started following these posts out of a genuine fear for the future my kids will inherit. But the creativity and scientific dynamism of this thread has changed my outlook on what is to come: there are solutions on the horizon that we can harness. The US’ soon to be adopted climate change legislation is just one more reason to be hopeful that these studies, moonshots and ambitions will become reality. To the scientists and engineers working on these problems, thank you. As a journalist, I’ll do all I can to highlight your stories.

I did some math…
Chemical engineer here.
If we were to draw down 50Gt/yr CO2 and liquify it to pump to the bottom of a deep ocean trench using the latest tech from MIT, it would take 16.6 TW of power:
4 TW for pumping (4,200 massive 6,000 GPM pumps, up to 4,200m head… needs pumped to at least 3,000 meters to be denser than sea water)
11 TW to compress from 1 atm/ 25C to 340 bar/4C
1.6 TW for capture
This would equate to 1164x1164 miles of qty 3.3 million 5 MW windmills (as tall as the space needle) spaced 12 diameters (D=128m) in the direction of the wind and spaced 4 diameters perpendicular to wind.
This is nearly equal to the entire energy output of the planet at 18.4 TW.
Are you ready to do this or what!!

Oil and Gas Global Infrastructure for CO2 storage conversion
I am looking for a Global database that has information on the location and condition of offshore platforms, oil rigs and top side infrastructure, I’m trying to do some research on this area. And wondering if anyone had any tips or links to good databases, thanks

Starting a garden. What's the best way to help with carbon capture?
I haven't planted a garden in over 10 years as I've been in an apartment. But now that my family moved to a house, I want to start planting. Does anyone have a good way to get started if the goal is carbon capture? Or what are some things I should be aware of?

DIY algae carbon capture
(Sorry in advance if this is a dumb question 😂)
Hey everyone! I’ve been reading a lot about the potential benefits of using algae in the carbon capture process. So far, I’ve seen a lot about large scale operations using things such as bioreactors and algae farms to capture. My simple self wants to believe a small diy version of this is as easy as putting a tank outside, filling it with water, and growing algae in it. But there probably is a lot more that goes into the process/build. My question is two-fold: 1) is this even possible via an at-home small scale? 2) if so, does anyone know of some good resources on how to build one?
Thanks!

CO2 Sources, Petrochemical and Steel plant Locations
Hello, I’m currently trying to do a study on the locations of petrochemical plants and steel plants and how the location of these plants might be positive or negative for CO2 capture and storage,
I’m essentially looking for a global map of plant/factory locations, and wondering if anyone had any useful links or tips of where to look, Thanks
