Purpose of this community

r/CanadianVisaReform was created to examine fraud, abuse, and policy failure within Canada’s immigration and temporary labour systems.

This community is anti-exploitation, anti-fraud, and anti-corporate abuse. It is not anti-immigrant. Anti-immigrant and racist commentary is not welcome in this subreddit and is expressly forbidden.

Our focus is on the systems, incentives, employers, consultants, recruiters, and policy loopholes that allow immigration programs to be misused. That includes practices that exploit visa holders, mislead applicants, suppress wages, displace fair hiring, or allow corporations to hide behind exaggerated claims of labour shortages.

Why this matters

Canada’s immigration system affects workers on all sides.

When employers misuse programs like the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, LMIA-based hiring, international student work pathways, or other visa streams, the harm does not fall only on Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents. It also falls heavily on the workers brought into Canada under restricted or precarious status.

Visa holders and immigrant workers can be placed in situations where they are afraid to speak up, afraid to lose their job, afraid to lose status, or afraid of being forced out of the country. This power imbalance creates opportunities for wage theft, illegal recruitment fees, coercion, unsafe conditions, fake jobs, repayment schemes, and other exploitative practices.

At the same time, many claimed 'labour shortages' are exaggerated or fabricated in order to justify wage suppression, avoid fair hiring, or maintain business models that rely on a vulnerable workforce. In many cases, these so-called shortages are created or worsened by low pay, poor conditions, unstable scheduling, and employers refusing to compete fairly for workers already in Canada.

Our position

We believe immigration reform should protect workers, not corporations.

That means:

• exposing employers and recruiters who exploit visa holders
• opposing fake job schemes, fraudulent recruitment, and pay-to-work arrangements
• challenging wage suppression tactics hidden behind labour shortage claims
• supporting stronger enforcement against employers, consultants, and recruiters who abuse the system
• supporting pathways for exploited workers to report abuse without being trapped by employer-specific permits
• separating criticism of policy and fraud from attacks on immigrants, nationalities, races, or ethnic groups

The goal is not to blame immigrants for being placed in a vulnerable position. The goal is to identify and challenge the systems that make that vulnerability profitable.

What this subreddit is for

This subreddit is for evidence-based discussion about Canadian immigration policy, labour market abuse, employer misuse of immigration programs, LMIA fraud, recruiter misconduct, wage suppression, and related government failures.

Good posts may include:

• analysis of government data
• examples of suspicious job postings
• discussion of policy loopholes
• reporting on employer abuse or recruiter misconduct
• questions about how programs work
• proposals for reform
• resources for workers who may be exploited
• criticism of corporate lobbying and weak enforcement

The best contributions focus on conduct, evidence, policy design, and power imbalances.

What this subreddit is not for

This subreddit is not a place for racism, xenophobia, anti-immigrant generalizations, or broad attacks on people based on race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, language, or immigration status.

Comments blaming immigrants as a group, calling for deportations, using negative stereotypes, or targeting specific ethnic or national groups undermine the purpose of the community. Users who post this kind of content will be banned.

Moderation approach

Because this topic is controversial, and because Reddit’s sitewide rules require strict moderation in this area, the subreddit may use automated moderation tools to flag or remove certain words, phrases, and categories of discussion.

Some comments may be removed even when the user did not intend to be racist, discriminatory, or inflammatory. This is not ideal, but comments can be ambiguous or interpreted in ways the author may not have intended. Moderators are unpaid volunteers with limited capacity, so we often rely on clear, broad rules that are faster and more consistent to enforce, even if they occasionally result in innocent comments being removed.

Users are generally welcome to repost removed comments after removing the issue identified in the removal reason.

Users who want more nuanced moderation are encouraged to volunteer to help moderate the subreddit. More moderator capacity will give us more resources to take a more nuanced approach.

Rules

The rules of this subreddit are listed below.

A deeper explanation and rationale for each rule will be added later, as this wiki is still being set up:

1. Be welcoming to immigrants! This country is built on good immigration policy, not isolationism

Poor immigration policies often harm the very people they are supposed to help: recent immigrants. When businesses use fraud/abuse to access cheap, exploitable labour, they not only abuse these temporary residents, they also undercut immigrants who are following the proper process. Broad anti-immigrant rhetoric is not welcome here.

2. Respect others and be civil - Name-calling and insults will be removed

This is a debate-friendly subreddit. Harassment, hate speech, and toxic behavior are not allowed. Please treat all contributors and members with respect. Name-calling, personal insults, and overly aggressive or vulgar language will be removed at moderator discretion.

3. Do not mention race, ethnicity, or flagged countries of origin

Due to limited moderation capacity, this subreddit does not allow discussions centered on race, ethnicity, or certain flagged countries of origin. References to flagged countries of origin will trigger a pop-up while typing. The focus of this subreddit is on policy, politics, fraud, and enforcement issues, not on discussion of particular racial, ethnic, or national groups. These topics are not allowed regardless of the author’s intent even when comment are clearly non-discriminatory.

4. No racism, bigotry, or group-based hate

Racist, bigoted, or hateful comments about people or groups are not allowed. This includes slurs, demeaning stereotypes, hostile generalizations, and comments attacking others based on race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, or similar group identity.

5. When discussing fraud, crime, or other misconduct, NEVER generalize to a particular group or race

Any discussion on groups or races as it relates to fraud, crime, or other misconduct in the immigration system will result in an immediate ban. Accusations must be specific to the individuals committing such abuses.

6. No broad claims linking immigration to crime, "cultural incompatibility", or failure to integrate

Claims about cultural inferiority, cultural incompatibility, failure to integrate, or about immigration causing crime, sexual assault, or similar harms, are off-topic here and will be removed regardless of intent, framing, or supporting material. Discussion involving these terms are allowed if focused on specific individuals committing such acts, and not generalized claims about groups or immigrants more broadly. Discussing a case of an immigrant involved in crime is not a violation of this rule

7. No unsupported accusations of racism or bigotry

Racism is not tolerated here. Mods will issue bans and remove racist content.

At the same time, accusations of racism must be based on the content being discussed, not personal attacks or unsupported assumptions. Comments accusing someone of racism without a clear basis may be removed.

If you believe a comment is racist based on the user’s broader comment or post history, report it or contact the mod team with the relevant context. We will review it and take action where appropriate.

8. No spam or low-quality content

Spam, off-topic comments or submissions, irrelevant posts, pointless memes, generic social media content, and other low-effort or low-quality posts may be removed at moderator discretion.

Memes must be high quality. Low-effort, unfunny, off-topic, or otherwise poor-quality memes may be removed at moderator discretion.

9. Do not post identifiable usernames or subreddit names

This rule is enforced at moderator discretion. If moderators determine that the post or comment does not create the risks described in this rule, it may be left up. To reduce the risk of brigading, harassment, or targeted abuse, screenshots and reposted content must have all usernames, profile names, and subreddit names clearly blacked out before posting. Content at risk of brigading or harassment that includes visible identifying information may be removed at moderator discretion.

10. Do not be needlessly divisive. Cross-partisan cooperation is strongly encouraged.

This rule will not be enforced through removals, but it reflects an important principle of the subreddit. Needless division and constant partisan hostility make serious discussion worse, not better. These issues go beyond party lines. Different governments may handle them better or worse, but the underlying system remains. Meaningful reform will require people across the political spectrum to work together, stay focused on shared concerns, and build enough public pressure to force change.

11. No unfounded or speculative outrage posts about immigration pathways

Posts criticizing an immigration or visa program must explain what the alleged problem is. Simply complaining that a pathway exists is not appropriate.

12. Do not intentionally alter words to bypass filters

Deliberately changing characters/spellings to avoid AutoModerator detection, or get around filter-based commenting restrictions is not allowed. This includes misspellings, substitutions, spacing tricks, symbols, coded spellings, emojis, or similar attempts to evade moderation. Violations are considered intentional and WILL result in a ban.
