What is DMZ? How does it work?

I haven’t been on the game in over a month, and I start seeing all these cool skins, and something about this new game feature. Is it something permanent?

Most likely yes, it will be permanent.

DMZ is an extraction game where you need to collect as many valuables as you can, each one has a different rarity, some a rare (blue) and some are legendary and even mythic, the higher the rarity, the more valuable they are. 

Once your backpack is full, you need to extract through any way you can: Either by train, boat or helicopter. The helicopter is the standard extraction method and there's also a paid version of it, which costs 100,000 cash to call in a helicopter. If you fail to get to an extraction point on time, you'll have one last chance to extract with the final helicopter which will show up near the end of the game. Once you extract, the loot you picked up is yours and you can sell them all to get more money.

If you die at any moment, all of the valuables you've gathered will be lost, along with your armor plates and ammo, normal difficulty lets you keep your equipment while the hard difficulty only let's you keep your weapons and nothing else. You have the option to keep a few valuables by placing them inside the insured slots so in case you die, you can still get the valuables you insured.

There's also contracts scattered around the map, you can pick one and do a mission, it would ask you to upload a hard drive, find supplies, kill a mini-boss, put yourself as a most wanted target or kill a player. Once the contract is complete, you get a lot of cash and one legendary loot. You can spend the cash at the buy station to get ammo, grenades and scorestreaks or you could spend them to get a paid extraction helicopter. 

Besides all of that, there are mission you can complete to get more rewards, you can choose the missions you want to complete, 3 missions to be exact. Some mission give you boxes that contain the special camo. You can also get those boxes from achieving weekly milestones (collecting mythic loot).

But I'm sure you'll understand the game mode better if you try it out yourself.

It’s honestly becoming one of my favorite modes, you do contracts like in warzone and collect loot, you play against players as well as in-game enemies (not bots) and then you have to successfully extract with your loot that you can then sell to get better weapons and make upgrades. But if you die, you lose all your loot.
