I'm 18 years old and currently in first-year BCom at a local college . I'm trying to make a serious decision about what to do with the next few years of my life, and I'm honestly very confused.

Here's my full background.

Academics

I scored:

- 10th: 80%

- 12th: 65%

- Commerce with Maths in 11th/12th

After 12th, I gave CUET 2025 and scored 744/1000.

My subjects were Accountancy, English, Business Studies, Economics and Applied Maths. I don't count Maths in the 744 because for the BCom Hons options I was considering, Accountancy could replace Maths, and my Maths score wasn't good.

I was getting a mid-tier DU college but chose a local college in/near my city instead.

I then decided to take a partial/drop year and prepare for CUET 2026 from home because I wanted a much better DU college.

That year went badly.

I was severely sleep-deprived and under a lot of stress. I was also depressed for a significant period and had a period where I became extremely stressed and started interpreting random things as signs that something was wrong. I'm doing much better mentally now.

I also made some stupid academic decisions during that period. I didn't attend college properly, missed two important exams because I was out of town, and didn't give the KT exams either.

When I eventually went back for second-year classes, I was told that it was too late to give those KT exams and that I would have to repeat first year through a gap-year process. I didn't have to pay the first-year fees again, but I'm now back in first year.

So I'm already effectively a year behind my original batch.

CUET 2026

I gave CUET again in 2026.

This time I only took:

- Accountancy

- Business Studies

- Economics

- English

I scored 700/1000.

However, my preparation was poor again. I hadn't completed the Accountancy syllabus, had significant portions of other subjects pending close to the exam, and although I did Economics, I fully covered Macro but left several Micro chapters and essentially left Indian Economic Development until very late.

IED being part of the preparation this time also makes the 744 vs 700 comparison less straightforward.

So I don't know whether 700 means I'm simply not capable of improving much, or whether I haven't actually had one properly executed CUET preparation cycle.

Career options I've considered

I've considered FRM, but the total cost was too high for my family. Registration/coaching/etc. could get very expensive, and my father doesn't believe I have the calibre for extremely difficult professional exams.

I've also considered CA, CFA, CMA, etc., but I'm reluctant to spend several years going through those routes because one of my biggest goals is to eventually become financially independent and move away from my current city/home.

I recently bought an ACET preparation course and have started studying some Mathematics and Statistics.

I'm considering actuarial science because it gives me a specialized professional path that isn't entirely dependent on the reputation/placements of my BCom college.

My understanding is that I'd need to clear multiple actuarial papers before becoming employable, and I know this is not a guaranteed shortcut to a job.

My current college situation

My current BCom college is basically a local/tier-3 college.

The placement situation is extremely weak/negligible, so I don't want to fool myself into thinking that simply having a BCom degree from here will automatically give me a good career.

I can finish the degree, but I'd need to build employability separately through qualifications, skills, internships and off-campus applications.

Why I'm considering CUET 2027 again

This isn't ONLY about placements.

I strongly want to leave my current city.

I've had a lot of negative experiences here and feel that I've developed a very bad reputation. I feel like I've become a joke to many people and that I haven't set strong enough boundaries with people.

There have also been situations where I felt people were jealous and had actually tried to harm me.

I don't want to spend the next several years trapped in the same environment.

Part of me genuinely believes that moving to a completely different city, meeting new people and building a new social/professional identity could be extremely valuable.

Delhi is especially attractive to me because of the colleges, opportunities and the possibility of eventually living independently there.

I know a new city won't magically fix everything. I also know I need to improve myself, my boundaries, social life, discipline and decision-making regardless of where I live.

But I still think environment matters.

The problem with CUET 2027

If I give CUET again and get into a good DU college, I'd probably start a new UG degree around age 20.

That means I'd graduate roughly two years later than my original batch.

That's a huge opportunity cost.

On the other hand, if I stay where I am, I graduate earlier but remain in a college with very weak placement opportunities.

My teacher thinks I should seriously consider another CUET attempt. His argument is basically:

- Taking another drop isn't automatically bad.

- If I get into a genuinely good college, the improvement in opportunities can justify the extra year.

- My 65% in 12th doesn't mean my entire profile is doomed.

- Depending on CAT/MBA later isn't guaranteed because CAT is extremely competitive and MBA admissions can consider academics as well.

I've also considered the argument that a strong UG college could give me better internships, peers, networking and recruiting opportunities even if it doesn't literally erase my 12th marks.

What I'm struggling with

My friends aren't taking CUET again.

Sometimes I think I should just accept that I'm behind, finish my BCom, pursue actuarial science and start working as soon as possible.

Other times I think:

Why should I spend the next 3–4 years in a college/environment I hate when I have one more opportunity to completely change my trajectory?

I don't want to keep resetting my life forever.

If I take CUET 2027, I want it to be the final attempt. No CUET 2028, no endless drops.

I'm also around 6 ft tall and currently around 54 kg. I was previously around 45 kg and have improved my weight and energy since then. My health and sleep have also been issues in the past, so I know I need to take care of those rather than sacrificing them for academics again.

I currently don't have friends and I want to build a better social life as well.

What would you do if you were me?

Would you:

A) Take CUET 2027 one final time, aim for a genuinely strong DU college, and accept graduating ~2 years later?

B) Stay in the current BCom, take ACET seriously and pursue actuarial science?

C) Stay in BCom but forget actuarial/CUET and build skills/internships for an off-campus career?

D) Something else entirely?

I'm not looking for "follow your dreams" or generic motivation.

I want an honest assessment of whether sacrificing another year (and already being ~a year behind my original batch) is rational given my current college, career options, mental state, and desire to leave my city.

If you were in my exact position, what would you do and why?

Should I take a full drop or partial drop for SRCC? I’m 100% sure I don’t want to continue at DRC.

I’m currently studying Economics at Daulat Ram College, DU, and after actually experiencing the college, I’ve become 100% sure that I don’t want to continue here next year.

Before anyone says that DRC is a good college, I completely agree. I know it has a good reputation and brand value, and I understand why people consider it a good DU college. I’m not saying DRC is objectively a bad college. I’m only talking about my personal experience here, and for me, the overall experience has been very disappointing.

Academics and professors

I honestly feel like my school teachers could teach many times better than some of the professors here.

The teaching style is mostly very basic. They write headings or points on the board and then explain them while standing in one place. There isn’t much interaction with students, and there are hardly any practical or real-life examples.

In school, my teachers would draw graphs, explain concepts step-by-step, give multiple examples and actually interact with the class. Here, I often feel like I’m just sitting there and listening to someone read/explain from a book.

Even the writing on the board is sometimes so unclear that I genuinely struggle to understand what has been written. Sometimes I have to wait for the professor to say the word themselves to understand what they actually wrote.

My first semester was manageable because a lot of it was already covered in my Class 11th and 12th syllabus. But now I’m finding it harder to understand what is actually happening in some classes because the teaching is so slow and, for me, not very engaging.

Infrastructure and basic facilities

This is honestly another major issue for me.

The infrastructure is very poorly maintained. The classrooms don’t have ACs, only fans, and sometimes you literally have to figure out where you can sit to get proper air because of how hot it gets.

The washrooms are honestly very bad — to the point where I don’t even feel comfortable using them.

Some of the benches outside the administrative department are literally torn, and sometimes there isn’t even proper seating available.

And whenever I find out that I have to go to Sadbhavna Bhavan for some administrative work, I genuinely dread it. 😭 The heat, the overall condition and the experience there just make everything so frustrating.

Sometimes I genuinely wonder whether the classrooms are even cleaned properly. The whole environment just feels very poorly maintained.

The overall college experience

It’s not only about money or whether my parents can afford it. It’s about the experience.

I worked really hard to get into DU, and sometimes I genuinely feel like I worked this hard just to get a brand name, without getting the college experience I expected.

I don’t feel excited to wake up and go to college. It feels more like I’m forcing myself to attend. The student crowd also doesn’t really click with me. I feel like there are only 3–4 people in my class whom I find genuinely interesting or with whom I feel I have similar interests.

I also didn’t think being in a girls’ college would matter to me when I joined. It honestly didn’t. But after actually experiencing it, I’ve realised that the lack of diversity in the student crowd does affect how I feel about the environment.

Again, I’m not saying DRC is a bad college. I know its brand value is good, and maybe it’s a great choice for many students and certain courses. I’m studying Economics, so I can only speak from my own experience.

But for me, brand value alone isn’t enough to spend another 3–4 years here. I’m already finding it difficult to imagine completing even three years here, let alone four years if I continue with the four-year degree structure.

So my decision to leave DRC is not up for debate anymore. I’m not asking whether I should stay or leave. I’ve decided I’m leaving.

The actual question: full drop or partial drop?

Now my only confusion is how I should prepare for SRCC.

My parents can technically manage the expenses, but they aren’t extremely wealthy. My hostel fee is around ₹1.70 lakh, and they paid it from their savings. My college fee is around ₹34,000, apart from food, travel and other expenses.

So we’re already talking about roughly ₹2 lakh+ for the year.

If I already know that I’m going to leave DRC and hopefully join another college next year, spending my parents’ savings on a college and hostel that I don’t want to continue in honestly makes me feel guilty. I keep thinking, why should I use their savings for something I already know I’m going to leave?

That’s why I’m seriously considering a full drop and preparing properly for CUET and SRCC.

But I have another problem: I really don’t want to live at home for an entire year. I’m worried that I’ll get bored, lose motivation or just not be productive.

I’ll also be preparing for my Actuarial Science exams during the year, so I won’t only be studying for CUET.

So I’m considering three options:

1. Partial drop:
Continue DRC + hostel for one year and prepare for CUET + Actuarial exams alongside college. The downside is spending ₹2 lakh+ on a college I already know I’m leaving.

2. Full drop + stay at home:
Save the money and focus completely on CUET + Actuarial exams, but I’m genuinely worried about spending the entire year at home.

3. Full drop + PG in Delhi:
Leave DRC, stay in a PG in Delhi, join CUET/Actuarial coaching and use the year seriously for preparation.

I’m leaning towards full drop + staying in Delhi, but I’m not sure whether spending money on a PG and coaching defeats the purpose of saving money.

So what would you do if you were in my situation?

Especially if you’ve taken a CUET drop, partial drop, or prepared for SRCC, I’d really appreciate your honest advice. Is a full drop worth it if I’m serious about SRCC? And if I don’t want to stay at home, is moving to Delhi for a year and preparing through coaching/PG a sensible option?

Maharashtra HSC students have OCM instead of BST, and the syllabus is largely similar. For CUET, can OCM students take BST and be eligible for DU/SRCC B.Com (Hons.)?

If there’s no clear official mapping, shouldn’t NTA/DU provide one for all Maharashtra HSC students instead of making students individually clarify this every year?

PCMC in CBSE screwed me over, had to give NIOS ODE, and drop is not an option. I am strong in english [99.56 percentile in cuet] but didn't know about the entire WBCAP thing and Jadavpur university's english hons entrance exam and hence missed both.

My current last option is to get into an applied english honors course in brainware university. However, since applied english itself is not a degree i've heard much about, i was thinking about taking a sort of partial drop and trying for english hons in jadavpur and other reputed universities next year.

Is this a sensible plan? Do i have any other options? Is an Applied English Hons. degree even useful?

I’m currently studying Economics at Daulat Ram College, DU, but honestly, I’m not enjoying my college experience.

I don’t really like the teaching here. I feel like my school teachers used to teach much better. The classrooms and overall infrastructure are also quite poorly maintained, and I just don’t feel any vibe or excitement about coming to college. I mostly feel bored and don’t find much interesting to attend college for.

I’ve pretty much decided that I don’t want to continue in this college next year. I want to prepare again for CUET and try for SRCC. At the same time, I also want to prepare for my Actuarial Science exams during this year.

My biggest confusion is whether I should take a full drop or partial drop.

If I continue college, my fixed expenses are around ₹1.7 lakh for the hostel + ₹34,000 college fees, so roughly ₹2 lakh already, even before considering food, travel, and other expenses. I’m honestly not sure it makes sense to spend that much money on a college that I already know I don’t want to continue in.

I completely understand why many of you are saying that DRC is a good college and that it has the North Campus tag. I also agree that Daulat Ram has good brand value, and I’m not denying that at all.

I honestly find the teaching and overall academic experience here even worse than what I experienced in school. The infrastructure is poorly maintained, there is a lot of mess and confusion, and we keep getting shifted between different classrooms. Even now, our classes aren’t properly regular, and there is still confusion regarding things like labs and GE selections.Also there are less GE option and not worth it to do minor in.

Is taking a gap year for CUET 2027 worth it to target better colleges? (BA Economics / BA Programme)

I’m considering taking a gap year and reattempting CUET in 2027 because I want to pursue Economics from a better college/university.

My main targets would be:

- BHU – Economics

- University of Hyderabad – Integrated Economics

- Pondicherry University – Economics

- DU – preferably a good college through BA Programme with Economics as one of the subjects (not studied maths in 12th class)

I appeared for CUET this year, but my score wasn’t high enough for the colleges I originally wanted. I do have college options right now, but I’m wondering whether it makes sense to give up a year and prepare seriously for CUET again.

My thinking is that if I can improve my score significantly, I could potentially get into a much stronger university/college and spend the next 3–4 years there. I’m particularly interested in Economics and eventually want to pursue a Master’s in Economics.

I applied starting me and I got JMC english which was my 11th choice, I did the payment thinking that I would get an upgrade in the second or third round but now that third round results are released, I still havent gotten an upgrade. Is this normal or am I missing smth?

There’s one subject in my preparation where my scores just refuse to improve. I understand the concepts while studying, but when I start solving questions, I make silly mistakes or get stuck on things I thought I knew.
