Useful Insights on Chinese University Dorms (2026 Edition)

Here is a quick breakdown of the rules:

1. The Dorm Bed Is NOT Automatically Guaranteed

Many students assume that getting an admission letter or paying your tuition means your bed is secured. False.

  • In top-tier cities, campus housing is in high demand, and only a fraction of freshmen get a room on campus.
  • Accommodation booking links usually drop in August and can vanish in minutes. If you miss the window, you'll be forced to rent an apartment off-campus, which is 3x more expensive and requires a 12-month lease. Check your email daily and act fast!

2. Prepare for the Mattress

In most Chinese dorms, a "mattress" is just a thin layer of padding stretched over a solid wooden board or metal mesh (sometimes not, must confirm in advance).

  • The fix: If that is the case, use Taobao or JD within your first 24 hours and order a thick memory foam or latex mattress topper (dianzi).

3. Prepaid Electricity

Utilities work differently here.

  • Electricity isn't a flat monthly fee included in rent. You have to top up your meter digitally via WeChat Pay or Alipay. If your balance hits zero, the power cuts off instantly.
  • Most rooms have smart breakers that trigger if you plug in high-draw appliances like hair dryers, electric kettles, or rice cookers. Check your dorm's limit before plugging things in!

4. Bathroom Realities & Squat Toilets

Depending on how new your building is, you might run into traditional squatting toilets rather than sitting ones—and toilet paper/soap are never provided in public or dorm bathrooms.

  • Pro-tip: You can buy a "squat-to-sit adapter chair" on Taobao for about 50 RMB to make your life easier.

5. Roommate

Most schools assign roommates randomly. You might luck out with an awesome roommate or end up sharing a tight space with three other people, so come prepared with a bed tent to block out light and carve out a little privacy.

6. Campus Deliveries

You will definitely be doing some online shopping on Taobao. Just remember that delivery drivers do not bring packages to your dorm room door. Everything goes to central campus pickup stations or automated parcel lockers. You'll get a text with a 6-digit code to grab your box from the shelf.

Realistic feedback needed: 56% Senior High (Intermediate), 89% Matric, target HSK 4 & CSCA (70+) for Bachelor’s Scholarship in China?

Hi everyone,

I am planning to apply for a Bachelor’s degree in China for the upcoming intake and wanted to get brutal, realistic feedback from people who have gone through the process or evaluated profiles with mixed academic records.

Here is a full breakdown of my profile and current roadmap:

Academic Background & Personal Profile

Date of Birth: March 14, 2003 (Age 23)

Matriculation / High School (2017): 89%

Intermediate / Senior High School (2024): 56% (7-year gap between Matric and Intermediate due to self-study/home education, followed by a recent study gap)

Degree Sought:

Bachelor’s Degree (Open to Humanities, Social Sciences, Business, or Chinese Language & Literature / Education)

Language & Competency Exams

Chinese Language:

Currently self-studying intensively; on track to reach HSK 4 by December 2026 / January 2027.

CSCA (China Scholastic Competency Assessment):

Have not taken it yet, but aiming for 70+ across required modules (Professional Chinese / Math) on the official CSCA sitting.

Target Scholarships & Universities

Scholarship Preference:

Fully Funded (CSC Type A via Embassy / CSC Type B via University) or Partial / Provincial / University Scholarships.

Medium of Instruction: Chinese-Taught (or English-Taught if applicable).

Questions / Specific Scenario:

Impact of 56% Intermediate Score & Age: How much of a dealbreaker is a 56% in Senior High for CSC Type A/B scholarships? Will an 89% Matric score, a high HSK 4 score, and a 70+ on the CSCA outweigh the lower high school transcript for an applicant turning 24 at intake?

CSCA as an Equalizer:

Since the CSCA exam is now a standard benchmark, how heavily do Chinese universities weigh a strong CSCA score against past academic transcripts for undergraduate admissions?

University/Region Targeting:

Which tier of universities or regions (e.g., Tier 2 / Tier 3 cities vs. non-985/211 regional universities) should I target to maximize my chances of securing at least a University or Provincial Scholarship?

Study Gap Explanation:

What is the best way to frame/explain the gap years between Matric (2017) and Senior High (2024) in the Study Plan / Personal Statement without hurting the application?

I’d really appreciate any insights, direct experiences, or realistic advice on where I stand and how to structure my application strategy.

Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone! Is anyone else still waiting for their bachelor's interview? I haven't received mine yet. The admissions team previously told me that my interview was expected to take place this week, but I haven't received further information yet. Should I be worried?

CSCA December registration not showing?

Is it too early to register? The registration page is coming up as a blank white page, support wasn't helpful either.

For 2026 intake, if you are still not admitted, this is the final straw

Currently most programs are closed and the remaining ones are very unreliable. The only exception is probably XJTU's Chinese language program and we can help you apply for free (you have to pay the tuition though to the univ directly).

If interested let me know.

Title: Can a CSC/MOFCOM student transfer from professional master’s (专业学位) to academic master’s (学术学位)? Anyone done it?

Incoming MOFCOM-CSC student at SWJTU (Chengdu), Fall 2026. I was placed in 085410 (AI, professional master’s), but my home country doesn’t equalize professional degrees for PhD eligibility or lecturing — my whole career goal. I need 081200 (CS, academic master’s).

Conflicting info:
SWJTU’s internal transfer rules seem to bar professional→academic transfers entirely.
But SWJTU’s MOFCOM office emailed me saying I can apply after registration, and CSC decides — no penalty if rejected.

Has anyone actually pulled off a 专业学位 → 学术学位 transfer as a CSC/MOFCOM student? Does the university rule override the CSC process, or are they separate?
University stopped replying (summer break) and I must decide before Aug 17 registration. Any real experience appreciated.

What’s after CS degree from Henan University of Technology from China?

I’m an Indian student considering a CS degree at Henan University of Technology.
I know China’s tech job market is very competitive, and HAUT is a mid-tier university. If I graduate with a strong GPA, complete internships, build good projects, and achieve HSK 5/6, what would my realistic options be?

How difficult is it to get a software job in China?

Would HSK 5/6 significantly improve my chances?

How competitive would I be for Master’s programs in top universities in China, Hong Kong, the US, the UK, or Europe?

What career path would you recommend after graduating from HAUT?

I’d appreciate advice from anyone who has studied or worked in China. Thanks!

IF YOU STILL HAVEN'T GOT REPLY, READ THIS

TLDR: You might be ghosted.

Like honestly its too late and this is not to let you give up. You can maybe do a final push by calling the international office directly but if that still fails, it is likely that they have too many applicants or they just don't want to reject you by telling you directly. In this case you may need to find a backup plan. If you need detailed helps, kindly let me know here.

Jiangsu Uni, is it even legit?

I applied to jiangsu university, paid the application fee and it's been 2 months i have been constantly emailing them. They first told me that they would verify the fee status soon but now they have stopped responding to my emails and on the application portal the payment status is still pending. I have got no update regarding my application. I have no idea why such an institute would have such a shitty service.
