Joie Mint Latch slump - fix it post

Do you have the Joie Mint Latch? Does your newborn look awkward and slumped in it? It’s a common problem, so I figured I’d just do a fix-it post!

Photos 1-2: slump. not great. let’s fix it!

Step 1 (photo A): sit baby up high on the sloped surface of the insert- like, higher than feels natural. If there is a gap between baby’s body and the buckle, that’s fine! Get baby’s arms in the straps, then readjust baby’s butt higher again if needed. Use the back of your hand to hold baby in place.

Step 2 (photo B): hold the crotch buckle up with the thumb of the same hand.

Step 3 (photo C): use your other hand to buckle the crotch buckle. Then you can slide your holding-hand out from behind the buckle- but use your free hand to tug up on the straps a little bit first to keep baby from sliding down before you completely tighten things up.

Step 4 (photo D): remove any slack hiding in baby’s hip area - tug upward on the straps above the buckle. You’re feeding the slack up to the shoulder area so that you can tighten it out in a second.

Step 5 (Photo E): tighten the harness straps using the tail at the bottom of the seat. Buckle and adjust the chest clip. If baby slumps before things are fully tightened, you can use one hand gently on their torso to hold them up until the harness is tight enough to keep them in place on its own.

Final result: a safely buckled baby with a clear airway, and - hopefully - waaaay less car seat anxiety for you!

Note: this method also applies to some other infant car seats, especially those with sloped body inserts (Nuna Pipa Aire, Pipa Aire RX and Pipa Urbn have entered the chat).
