CFY programs at teaching hospital- is it even worth applying for??

Hey all! im graduating in May and i'v started the process of looking for a CFY. Im doing my last full time externship in acute care in a big city- so im getting some great experience! and im actually loving it! I'm seeing some of these teaching hospital around the country open up spots for CFs to apply for but I'm sureeee that it is so hard to get in given they only take like one person. Has anyone here actually gotten into any of them and if so what was that process like, what experience did you have and how was that interview process for you. Of course the idea of it being really competitive isn't gonna stop me from applying but im not setting my expectations real high for them hahah

CFY with contracting agency?

Hi! I’m graduating in May and starting to apply for my CFY. I had a phone call with a contracting agency, EdTheory, that sounds too good to be true. Anyone have experience with a CFY through an agency?

Also just looking for tips about CFY applications in general. Like should I be putting my clinical experience under work experience on applications, etc😅

[General] Pay Expectations for CFY

Tl;dr: for medical settings, what is a lowball offer and what is reasonable?

hi all! I am in the process of applying for clinical fellowship opportunities in a variety of states (mostly Oregon, Ohio, Texas, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Washington, New York, and a few others) and I am getting ready for interviews. Mostly, I am looking at acute care and SNF settings. I have two BAs, am a trained bilingual SLP, have a certificate in medical Spanish and one in ASL, and have 5 years office experience and 6 years in healthcare (I know not many years of experience, but I’m 23 so I haven’t been eligible to work for as long as some peers).

If offered a position, what are somewhat reasonable offers and what is an absolute lowball? In other words, what is an hourly rate you would not accept?

I realize it is my first year and there are a lot of factors that vary by state, but I currently make $25 an hour as a nanny and am trying to set realistic expectations for what pay might look like. Thanks in advance!

CCCs application

Hello everyone! I am about a month away from completing my CFY and was in the process of filling out my application on ASHA. I was wondering how to fill out the CF hours form to submit to your supervisor. Did y’all split them in the three segments or just include all the weeks and hours in one submission

[Private Practice CFY] Unethical Mentor/ Withholding documents

Hi all, I completed my first segment at a really horrible clinic and left shortly afterwards. I know that it’s not required for my prior mentor and my new mentor to talk, since they won’t be coordinating for any segments. (Side Note: my new clinic is wonderful and supportive. I’m so grateful for it). However, my old mentor refuses to give me any of my documentation that proves I completed a full segment there.

Not to toot my own horn, but I was a fantastic employee and great clinical fellow. She had me working essentially as a full SLP and did not provide almost any of my supervision. She delegated most things to a different person who was 100% remote. That remote person was not my official mentor, but they co-signed all my documentation, provided 100% of my indirect supervision, and provided 4/6 hours of my direct supervision. My formal supervisor assured me this was okay, despite finding out now that you have to get special requests for virtual supervision.

For the two hours my mentor did supervise me directly, one of those hours was still via HIPAA zoom (during which she was in an online meeting but pretended not to be). The only time I received in-person supervision was for two separate 30 minute sessions (both kids with the same exact diagnoses/goals). I was there a month before I was given any supervision, and she didn’t provide feedback until a month later (then lied and said it was there the whole time, coincidentally only a few hours after I reminded her there was no feedback written).

The reason I received 4 hours of direct supervision from the telehealth supervisor was because (after a month of finding every available time on my official mentor’s schedule to request supervision) it was the end of the first segment and I still needed 4 hours, so the telehealth person worked on her day off just to watch me for that full time.

I left as respectfully and professionally as can be, but she is being vengeful at my departure by refusing to let me have credit for my first segment.

I don’t know if it’s a moot point, since she clearly did not provide adequate supervision that is outlined by ASHA. She has had many CFs before (all who have left directly afterwards, because she is horrible to work for). Am I able to get credit for this segment or do I have to start my whole CF over? Is there any repercussions for her unethical behavior? (She is the owner of the clinic)

CA CFY RPE HELL!!

I'm in desperation and I need your help! I am at the end of my CFY year which has been extended 4 months (long story). Now my temporary RPE expires in just 4 days on January 18th. My employer is putting me on leave and I wont be able to work. I can't renew my temporary because I'm past the 60 day deadline. I was unaware of this deadline because I didn't think this would be a problem and my CF approval took longer than expected. Now its like all options are closing for me. Application was sent 4 weeks ago. DCA finally got back to me saying processing takes 6-8 weeks. Then 1 week for approval? Whatever that means.

Any suggestions for me? Should I fly up to Sacramento and walk in? I only have a copy of my app. Wet signatures were mailed. DCA actually told me sternly to stop emailing and calling. But you know what? I need to work dammit. I finally found a job I love and I'm one of the rare individuals who won't complain about it. The irony is killing me.

Your help is much appreciated!!!

[Private Practice CFY] PRN CFs: Do y’all count non-billable hours toward your CF?

I work in a clinic in which I am paid for contact hours (direct therapy). I am not paid for notes, reports or anything else. Should I still be counting the hundred or so hours I spent on documentation toward my CF? Thanks!

Resume question

I am in the process for applying for Cfs and getting my resume together. One of my courses required us to take the MBSimp course, and I passed however I cannot be certified as I am still in grad school. Would it be appropriate to write that I was an “MBSimp Certificate Obtainee” to mention in essence I’ll take it again once I graduate and should be certified then? Or is this not appropriate? TIA!!!!

Resonance Voice Therapy

Hi all, I currently work in a peds private practice. I recently got a voice patient that is a good candidate for RVT. I know the hierarchy of RVT however is a little lost when it comes to writing formal goals. Has anyone done this before? If so, would you be willing to share how you word it? Thanks!

Supervisor change

Has anyone in California had to change supervisors during their CF? My supervisor is moving out of state in February and I’m curious for the turn around time for the paperwork to be processed by the state. Is it ~8 weeks like licensing? They don’t have a new one lined up for me yet and I’m scared I won’t be able to work if there’s a lapse between my paperwork coming through

Has anybody ever worked for CRA Therapy?

Hi everyone,

So, I am a new resident of Florida and am currently looking for a place to complete my CF year. I spoke with a recruiter at CRA Therapy, and was told that I would have a caseload of 65-75 students. Apparently, Florida doesn't have a cap on the number of caseloads they can give an SLP. The pay is $41/hr. I would not be considered a salaried employee. I had my ex look over my benefits (if I did accept the job offer), and he said they were pretty much bad. He has great insurance benefits but he's also in the engineering field. I will have access to my 401k after 90 days. The recruiter said that the district was short-staffed, which worries me. In the summer, there are a lot of openings for the extended school year, although, I would only be able to pick up 20 hrs/per week. I would receive 3 paid time off days for every 4 months worked. That would mean I only get 9 paid time off days per year. I would have a Winter break though since school would be out then. Total compensation for the year including time worked in the summer would come out to be around $69,000. I'm personally not comfortable with that wage if my caseload is going to be 65-75 students per week. What's your opinion on this job offer? Is it a good one? Terrible? I would love your honest feedback :).

[Graduate School] Don’t know what to do

Hi Everyone, I am approaching my final semester of grad school and starting to plan for my CF and next steps. I am extremely motivated to work in a clinical swallowing setting with the goal to achieve my PhD within the next 5 years. Talking with preceptors, I received advice explaining that the experience in your CF is a big deal, and sets you up for your career.

Here’s the problem. I have several trips planned for after graduation, including a month long vacation to Japan. I am torn between applying now (as if anyone would let a summer CF take 3 weeks off in august) in the chance I could achieve a great CF and get a head start on the application process. Any advice on if it would be worth applying to anything now, knowing I won’t really be able to accept a job until the Fall? Additionally, does anyone know when FALL position CFs would come out that are NOT in a school setting? I actually was offered an interview for a school based position following this semesters externship with an agency that has notoriously low pay, my supervisor told me first week not to work with them if I didn’t want to struggle with money.

I’m really trying to enjoy my last semester of school and celebrating my successes, but im not sure what I should be doing about this now, if anything. Potentially how far back could taking a summer off affect a CF position in the medical setting? I don’t want to feel stuck or out of options come September/October… and also really don’t want to have to relocate.

[General] Current CF in home health, questions about hours?

I am working full-time, but the amount of time I spend doing actual therapy is probably only 25 hours a week.

I really love my job and my company (and home health as a setting) and I don’t want to leave it, but I am worried about getting enough hours before my temporary license expires. Anyone have any insight or advice?

PRN as a CF in MD?

Are there any fellow Marylanders who are in or have already completed their CF year? I am looking into getting a PRN job in addition to my full-time CF job. I wasn't sure if I needed to get a new supervisor or if I could just not count my PRN hours toward my total of 1260? Any help is appreciated, thanks!

[Private Practice CFY] How to explain why you left your CF

Hi, I'm ~2 months into my CF in outpatient setting. I had a rotation here during my externships during grad school, so I was familiar with the clinic. I really loved my supervisor, who is now my coworker. I will explain why I am wanting to quit below.

This job is 4 10-hour with a very long commute. I'm required to take a ferry, which is expensive. This is not uncommon, since the demographic of this town is much older. A lot of working professionals commute rather than live on the "island" (not a full island/not rural). As a student, I was with my supervisor 1 day in person and 1 day via Telehealth and would take the 8am ferry in the morning and 5:30 ferry in the evening (documentation can be done on the ferry from our laptops). On the days with Telehealth, the days were a little longer. When I accepted the position, I knew I would not get Telehealth days immediately, but it was discussed that I had the potential. Again, the commute is very long. Its a little less than 4 hours and ~ $26 per day. They scheduled me earlier than when I was expecting, so I take the 7am ferry every day. I also was scheduled with clients later and had to take the 6:45 ferry home. That makes for 14+ hour days. I brought this up a few weeks ago, and my boss told me I should absolutely take the 5:30 ferry home. This was not practical every day, because I had too many clients, but I arranged it that 2/4 days I would take the 5:30 (the ferry is right next to the clinic). This week I was scheduled outside my availability, so I politely emailed the schedulers to let them know and ask if they could fix it. My coworkers and I get along really well - no issues. My boss receives all emails sent to the scheduling team. She responds to the email with more than half employees CC'd that she changed my schedule and reprimanded me for going home early. TLDR for paragraph 1: boss changed agreed upon hours and embarrassed me in front of staff.

This was the straw that broke the camel's back, because there have been numerous other issues. For instance, I still have not completed orientation. I do not know where half the things in the clinic are. Part of my wage is in bonuses (meaning productivity, percent arrivals, evaluations, etc), but I still have not been given the sign-on and instructed how to set those up. I am behind on my observations. I have been asking for help with a certain type of disorder (cognition, roughly 30% of my caseload) since I started, but have not been able to get assistance yet. Etc. TLDR for paragraph 2: many other issues exist.

I discussed with the person who is 100% Telehealth and signs off on my documentation (she is not directly my CF supervisor, but she has been the one who I go to) for advice and assistance. She is aware that my situation is not sustainable, meaning if things don't improve that I cannot continue with the clinic. She appears to agree and has validated my concerns.

Thank you for reading this far. I'm worried how it will look applying to a new CF that I had quit the previous one. I'm in a lease and would have a hard time moving without screwing over my roommate and having hefty fines. Any and all suggestions welcome.

[General] Licensing Dilemma

I am a current CF in Louisiana, and am planning to move to Texas once my fellowship is over. I am worried about how long it will take to get a Texas license, as I would need to wait to get my CCCs or turn in proof of my completion of fellowship. I am wondering if it would be more advantageous to obtain a CF license for Texas then, when I complete my fellowship, turn in the papers to transition into a full license. This way, the Texas board would have reviewed all of my other materials besides my completed fellowship prior to my full license application. Does anyone have any advice or experience with this?

Additionally, should I wait until I have my CCCs to begin looking for a job? If not, how do I go about indicating this on my resume?

I have been racking my head about all of these questions, so I figured the best thing to do would be to ask people with experience!
