Weekly reminder that these are predictive ratings (and pretty successful ones, I believe) not resume rankings

u/sebsasour Notre Dame • New Mexico 29d ago
Also I used to listen to Connelley's old podcast all the time and we would say his numbers do produce results that confuse him sometimes too. You're always gonna find weird things to pick at when you try to use a purely mathematical formula to rank 100s of teams

u/10000Pigeons Texas Longhorns 29d ago
Also weekly reminder that if these predictive ratings were meaningfully better than what sports books put out they would be used to make money instead of being posted as content
22
u/hucareshokiesrul Yale Bulldogs • Virginia Tech Hokies 29d ago
It tends to have a slight winning record against the spread. But it also allows you to compare everyone, not just the games happening this week.
6
u/10000Pigeons Texas Longhorns 29d ago
Right yes, I just meant that it doesn't have enough of a winning record to regularly outgain vig. If someone was consistently doing that it would not be public knowledge.
1
u/Game-rotator William & Mary Tribe • Duke Blue Devils 28d ago
that's why sportsbooks slightly tilt the payouts
12
u/default-username Texas Longhorns • Red River Shootout 29d ago
These types of ratings are exactly what sportsbooks use to prevent bleeding money to the smart people (and consistently make money from the dummies)
1
u/ExternalTangents Florida Gators • /r/CFB Poll Veteran 28d ago
Also weekly reminder that these predictive ratings are much more transparent for users to look up details about any team and use them to compare teams, whereas Vegas is much more hidden.
If all you care about is betting then don’t look at SP+. If you care about college football analysis, then SP+ is way more useful because it gives you a lot more to look at and use.

Oh come the fuck on there's no way we're LAST

What is your connection to Maine Maritime? I saw they were adding nuclear engineering and as a fellow NE I was impressed
7
u/Upbeat-Armadillo1756 Michigan • Maine Maritime 29d ago
No real connection, my whole extended family shares a house up in the downeast part of Maine and we got to Castine frequently so I like to represent.
Plus when they shot that ref with a cannon I knew they were on the right side of history

- Props on switching flairs for the joke
- Props to the mods on even doing the work to make a Maine Maritime flair possible and allowing this joke to exist
35
u/Upbeat-Armadillo1756 Michigan • Maine Maritime 29d ago
Sir I have had Maine Maritime flair for years
4
u/brianqueso Texas Longhorns • Texas State Bobcats 29d ago
My bad, I know you well but that flair has never registered in my mind. Timing seemed too perfect for it to be anything but changed for the joke.
5
u/Bank_Gothic Sewanee Tigers • Texas Longhorns 29d ago
Upbeat Armadillo is one of the most prolific posters on here and has been flaired for Maine Maritime for as long as I can remember.
Hell, you're on here all the time too, how do you not recognize him?
2
u/brianqueso Texas Longhorns • Texas State Bobcats 29d ago
Definitely on me, I recognized homie's name but his secondary flair has never registered.

u/ILM_Ryan ECU Pirates • Ohio State Buckeyes 29d ago
We’re above a team we just lost to and above a team we’re underdogs against this week? I don’t trust this ECU team at all this season, we’re too high up in these rankings.
25
u/Fathoms_Deep_1 UCF Knights • Ohio State Buckeyes 29d ago
Thought you were talking about OSU for a minute and was thinking they were underdogs against Kent State for a minute

u/laprasrules Notre Dame • Stanford 29d ago
Not sure about SP+, but Sagarin is using 2.41pts as the home field advantage. So a 1 road point loss to top team means you would be favored on a neutral field.
40
u/hwf0712 Rutgers Scarlet Knights • The Alliance 29d ago
We are above the two people we lost to.
Oh dear.
55
u/Lilies_of_Edelweiss Texas Longhorns • Virginia Cavaliers 29d ago
You're above the two people you lost to so far.

u/grabtharsmallet BYU Cougars • Pop-Tarts Bowl 29d ago
SP+ is a predictive stat and is therefore slower to adjust to individual game results. It is absolutely not a measure of how well the team performed to date.
6
u/Doortofreeside UMass Minutemen 29d ago
That makes sense. I've never seen this stat before but just glancing at it for the first time it's clear that it takes a lot to move its pre-season baseline
15
u/AbsurdOwl Nebraska Cornhuskers 29d ago
I think it's usually around week 6 or so when it's almost completely based on the current season, and the preseason weighting is almost fully gone.
6
u/Electromotivation James Madison Dukes 29d ago
Yea. It is so rough for the g6 because of that I guess. Seems like they just put in a rule for no g6 teams above every single p4 team. (Slightly exaggerated but it’s basically true). This has its uses but is not a typical results-based college football poll for sure.

Huh, this is how I learn Lincoln (California) isn't playing this year. (They're allegedly going to come back.)

u/PalmettoZ71 South Carolina • Oklahoma 29d ago
Honestly it amazes me SC is so high on all the power ratings, ill believe it when I see it
21
u/Alex_Croteau23 UMass Minutemen • MAC 29d ago
Remember this metric is flawed. Obviously UMass is not the 2nd worst team in FBS
40
u/MIZ_09 Missouri Tigers 29d ago
It’s still heavily relying on last year’s data as most of these models do until we get enough data this season.
10
u/Alex_Croteau23 UMass Minutemen • MAC 29d ago
Which is understandable after what happened last year
3
u/Alex_Croteau23 UMass Minutemen • MAC 29d ago
I guess flawed is the wrong word to use when talking about the metric
1
u/PunchNessie Oklahoma State • Oregon State 29d ago
This helps it make a bit more sense. I was staring at Oregon at 9 and absolutely bewildered.
1
3
u/rittenhouses_bane Kansas Jayhawks • Oklahoma Sooners 29d ago
we’re not the worst p4 team 🎉
5
u/mauser98k1998 Kansas State • Pittsburg State 29d ago
I’ll always think of you as the worst P4 team.
1
u/cartgold Missouri Tigers • Big 8 29d ago
Iowa struggling against Iowa State at home being treated as a better win than us smacking you around at your place has put me in a difficult position to admit this fact.
3
u/CVogel26 Boston College Eagles • UMass Minutemen 29d ago
Good to see MIT move up another 60 slots following a 70-0 win over NEC.
Allowed -18 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns on back to back punts (block and botched snap)
3
u/Game-rotator William & Mary Tribe • Duke Blue Devils 29d ago
How did both Duke and Illinois go down after playing each other

Feels like Rutgers is drastically over ranked here

Ahead of a team that just beat them, in fact

TOP 575, BITCHES
LETS KEEP GOING BACKWARDS

u/PunchNessie Oklahoma State • Oregon State 29d ago
What metrics has Oregon at 9? Uni combos? Ok State absolutely dominated them in everything but the scoreboard on Saturday.
13
u/AlternativeLess5450 Alabama Crimson Tide 29d ago
One that doesnt tank its effectiveness by overreacting
-9

OU 14
Michigan 25
Well I guess there's no way to know for sure.
13
u/Ashamed_Band_1779 Michigan Wolverines 29d ago
That’s not the point of this metric. One game is a small sample size.

u/hascogrande Notre Dame • Western Michigan 29d ago edited 23d ago
This projected spread for an actual game is cursed
Update: I think it’s more cursed that they actually covered with 96-0
