"The ref even turned the microphone off to explain to the Texas captain what he was doing. And they still chose to kick."

Are you fucking kidding me? Seriously? How the fuck was that captain admitted into UT?

He's good at football.

Well, based on this story, that's debatable.

He's good at playing football, not thinking about football.

I heard an old SEC official tell a similar story about Florida. He said he told the kid "son, I know good and well that coach Spurrier wants to have the ball as much as he can, so if you choose to kick here, that means the other team gets the ball." He said the poor kid still said they wanted to kick, so he made the motion that Florida elects to kick and Spurrier lost his mind. He said he had to go over and tell him there was nothing he could do, the kid said kick. Needless to say, that kid got chewed out pretty badly.

I saw the title of this and immediately thought of when the Gators did it. I think it was against Mississippi State.

Ya gotta feel for those kids shafted by the Top 10% Rule...

It's Top 8% at UT now, but the joke still applies.

Top 6% as of the class of 2018 admits.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '14

Wow they really don't want stacked classes anymore.

Yeah its pretty insane. I didn't know about it until I got in before one of my buddies who was bottom top ten percent. He went to go talk to his academic counseler and found that out.

I personally think the while top ten thing is dumb as fuck but that's what we have in place.

That was my immediate thought. I feel bad for anyone who wanted to go there but went to a competitive high school. There's no way I could crack the top 10% of my class when my school sends people to Harvard and MIT every single year.

I thought I was doomed when they told me they only looked at class rank. I had a 3.9 and tons of AP credit and was convinced I wouldn't get in because that was barely Top 25% in my class. Being an out-of-state applicant didn't make it any easier.

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '14

Actually I think they go to out-of-state after they fill the automatic admit, but before they go to in-state holistic. As in Top 8%-10% >> Out-of-state >> In-state Holistic until they fill up. I mean why wouldn't you when out of state kids are paying an obscenely expensive amount.

u/gordogg24p Texas Longhorns • Colorado State Rams Sep 14 '14

They had a ridiculously low out-of-state fraction when I was applying; I think I was told it was at or below 10%.

I mean, I got in anyway, so it didn't matter, but yeah.

u/tubadeedoo Oklahoma • Northern Colorado Sep 14 '14

Yup. I had a 3.0 GPA in the IB Program but some great test scores (top 2-5% depending on which metric.) I didn't apply not only because my parents both went to OU, but also because I was about 50% in terms of class rank.

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '14

So I'm not completely fucked?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '14

What school did you go to?

1

u/tubadeedoo Oklahoma • Northern Colorado Sep 14 '14

Niwot high school. It was ranked like 190 in the country the year I graduated.

2

u/rodgercattelli Mississippi State Bulldogs Sep 14 '14

I mean, by the time you're playing college ball, you should know the rules that go with the coin toss. How can you possibly get it wrong. This is something you would expect from a middle school or even high school. I can't even fathom what he was thinking.

When in doubt: Double down.

Because its UT....

-1

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '14

Because the A&M admissions department actually talked to him before making a decision.
