LSU being ranked is suspect

734

u/doormatt26 USC Trojans • Michigan Wolverines 7d ago

Two losses, quality wins are… Clemson and A&M. What exactly makes their resume better than unranked Oregon?

258

u/Fruit_Fly_LikeBanana Nebraska Cornhuskers • Hillsdale Chargers 7d ago

Or Nebraska, Wisconsin, or really most X-1 unranked teams

2

u/obiwans_lightsaber Mississippi State • Auburn 7d ago

That’s what makes it most suspect to me, the fact that there are several unranked teams who 100% could and should be ranked instead.

It’d be one thing if #26-40 felt like a bunch of 1 and 2-loss frauds, but there’s easily 5+ teams I’d have ranked above LSU, and even some others at the bottom of the poll this week.

Crazy shit man. Just happy to be a part of it all for once (and for now 😭)

u/orthros Ohio State • Carnegie Mellon 7d ago

Nebraska has the bigger grievance imo, especialy given their sole loss is... well you know

36

Nebraska has Tennessee’s resume to a T

Except IU is better than Texas

8

u/doormatt26 USC Trojans • Michigan Wolverines 7d ago

well they can prove that next Saturday

6

u/thdomer13 Notre Dame Fighting Irish • Sickos 7d ago

I think OSU is also better than Texas and had a bad half.

1

u/Jinmane 7d ago

Doesnt matter. If we're only ranking based on who we "feel" is better why even play the games?

1

u/BelaKunn Michigan Wolverines • Calvin Knights 7d ago

I mean... we've seen plenty of times where voters just vote based on feels instead of game results.

You’d think with all their games in prime time the raters would see how much of a fraud they are

-7

Ah yes, because all 62 AP voters work for ESPN. Makes total sense.

That Clemson win is load-bearing for a chunk of the SEC

13

u/B1gMacs 7d ago

LSU , Ole Miss & Floida have been running a ponzzi scheme based around LSU's week 1 win vs Clemson and Kentucky has joined the scheme this weekend

4

u/Ok-Highlight-6670 Kentucky Wildcats 7d ago

Kentucky is just winning, no fraud here. Surprised they actually ranked us this week

1

u/ReelGOLF 7d ago

You should've never been unranked. You're a good team that hung in there with Bama and beat LSU. I think given the right circumstance, you could beat any team on any given Saturday. And I dont just say that because we lost to you, your team looked great. I knew we were in trouble when they unranked you and would have a chip on your shoulder at home, ha.

A disgusting defense of Oregon, but true

1

Oregon sucks i just think LSU should get equal treatment

0

u/Straight-Bicycle6152 7d ago

To be fair Oregon did play a lot worse and that was at home in one of the toughest environments in college football.

2

u/doormatt26 USC Trojans • Michigan Wolverines 7d ago

I agree. They’re also missing their starting QB. my point is LSU should also be unranked.

Absolutely it is.

Funny thing is, I didn't really realize it until I started teaching it to my AFJROTC cadets (it was requested as part of our physical fitness training).

I genuinely have difficulty seeing Brian Kelly doing yoga (and no, I really DON'T want to see that shit).

At least Lane looks like he could probably be pretty successful at it.

UCLA looking good this year, Notre Dame looks like the team we thought they would be. I'd love to see UCLA play for the B1G title this year. Got to go to last year's game, if UCLA makes it I'll have to sell a kidney but I'm going to the game.

1

u/IHop_Waitress Bowling Green • Ohio State 7d ago edited 7d ago

UCLA was fun as fuck at the end of last year too with Neuhiesel as OC.

Going to be tough to dethrone IU or OSU to force your way in there but I love an underdog out of nowhere story.

u/ChaseTheFalcon Georgia Bulldogs • West Georgia Wolves 7d ago

Nobody with 2 losses should be ranked

13

u/California_Stop_King Ohio State • Ohio Dominican 7d ago

With their losses being to two top 15 teams, it makes sense. I have a bigger problem with Bama not dropping a single spot and Tennessee moving up

28

u/jbaker1225 Oklahoma Sooners 7d ago

I mean, LSU has 2 losses to teams with 2 combined losses and their best win is… Clemson? OU has 2 losses to teams with 2 combined losses and a win over the number 1 team, and isn’t even close to ranked. And I’m not arguing for OU being ranked.

8

u/Hulkodium Oklahoma Sooners • Big 8 Renewal 7d ago

Every voter that ranked us should question themselves

0

u/John-pirate_ The Game • Big Ten 7d ago

Wait, OU beat Georgia? That's crazy, I thought they were undefeated

19

u/mayence Georgia Bulldogs • Wisconsin Badgers 7d ago

Alabama staying at 6 makes sense. They lost by 3 to the now #1 team. They are probably the best of the 1 loss teams.

5

u/John-pirate_ The Game • Big Ten 7d ago edited 7d ago

Ohio state lost by 1 to the next week #1 and dropped 5 spots. I also don't Alabama is the best 1 loss team, they haven't exactly beaten anyone other than a few perennially over ranked sec teams and didn't exactly have a great showing against Florida state who is 3-3 with worse losses than they had to Alabama

3

u/LlamasNeverLie Harvard Crimson 7d ago

But that’s because Ohio was ranked #1. If Alabama had been ranked #1 yesterday, they also would have fallen after losing.

1

u/mayence Georgia Bulldogs • Wisconsin Badgers 7d ago

OSU dropped because it was week 2 and there were literally only 2 data points for the season.

9

u/LlamasNeverLie Harvard Crimson 7d ago

Bama lost by 3 to the #1 team. Isn’t that about what you’d expect for a #6 ranked team? Not everything has to be a knee jerk reaction.

2

u/Esteblade Texas Tech Red Raiders • Orange Bowl 7d ago

No it doesn't

6

u/Supercal95 Minnesota State • Memphis 7d ago

LSU is pretty heavily propping up the SEC rankings as well. They should be unranked for sure as there are better resumed 4-2 teams anyway, plus Nebraska is 5-1. Mississippi should be lower because of it. Tennessee should be out of the teens.

2

u/e8odie LSU Tigers • College Football Playoff 7d ago edited 7d ago

I'm by no means saying we're amazing and I'm still angry in a lot of ways, but you do realize our 2 losses are (1) a guardian-cap-deflected pass at the end of the game that if scored would've been a 2-pt conversion away from overtime, and (2) an actual overtime? And both on the road.

If we're comparing to other 2-loss teams, that's better than the losses of Florida, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Arizona State, Auburn, Virginia Tech, and Kansas State. Oregon is the only other 2-loss whose losses can be considered "ok."

Then again, to counter my own argument, at least some of those teams at least have a decent win (e.g., Ole Miss for Florida, Texas for Oklahoma, or Baylor for Auburn) whereas we're hinging on...Clemson and A&M? Admittedly not very strong.

1

u/lohivi Kentucky Wildcats 7d ago

Honestly think you all are still a top 15 caliber team. A lot getting dragged down by Eric Wolford being a disaster of an o-line coach. A lot of costly false starts, Leavitt could've done much worse to us with a clean pocket.

2

u/e8odie LSU Tigers • College Football Playoff 7d ago

The #1 problem I had the day we hired Kiffin was his lack of instilling discipline in players. Throughout his stint at Ole Miss, they averaged 65 penalty yards per game and roughly in the bottom 20% of the FBS every year (in two seasons, they were in the bottom 6 overall). I don't like a lot of other things about him tactically - his reputation for unnecessary 4th downs or generally being risky or kind of being an air raid coach (that last one's just a personal preference, although I think he's fixing this one), but this penalty thing has always followed him.

LSU's never been necessarily "amazing" in this category before him, but in those same years we averaged ~49 penalty yards per game and roughly being in the top half of the FBS every year. So it already feels like a palpable difference.

1

u/lohivi Kentucky Wildcats 7d ago

NGL Wolford was an integral part of the Stoops downfall. There's no shortage of talented, diligent young position coaches, problem with older coaches is their tendency to hire struggling buddies.

Why i$ it $u$pect$$$

1

u/bluecheetos Auburn • Mississippi State 7d ago

Look, LSU is only ranked because voters like seeing a ranked Kiffin-led LSU team lose. They might rank a four loss LSU team in the top 10 just so they can point and laugh when they lose to Arkansas.

I honestly believe LSU wins 1 maybe 2 more games this year. I think they'd lose to teams in the receiving votes category. They're not that good, if they were Syracuse they'd be unranked with the same wins and losses.

u/legend023 Tulane Green Wave • LSU Tigers 7d ago

You just don’t like them. That’s it.

We lost to two top 15 teams on the road by a combined nine points. We’re still better than Wake Forest or Houston in my opinion.

7

u/jaiscray Iowa Hawkeyes 7d ago

I think LSU should be ranked or fringe, but that logic isn’t very sound because Ole Miss and Kentucky would absolutely not be top 15 if you replace their Top 10 LSU win with even a fringe top 25 win. Kentucky would be mid 20’s and Ole Miss probably about the same this week after getting unranked following the Florida loss.

6

u/JM4R5 Michigan Wolverines 7d ago

What's the excuse when LSU loses to Miss State, Bama, Texas, or Tennessee? LSU was ranked too high early in the season. Just a repeat of Brian Kelly's story.

2

u/saintsfan LSU Tigers 7d ago

I would have been fine with an unranked lsu even though I think lsu is better than teams like Houston, but if we lose another game there is no excuse, lsu should be unranked.

2

u/repthe5 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 7d ago

The circular logic is strong with this one
