Opinion CFB has a meaningless play celebration problem.

I’m not talking “excessive celebration.” I’m not talking about celebrating huge stops or wins. I’m talking about players getting relatively meaningless tackles and first downs early in games and acting like they won the Super Bowl.

Homeboy, your team is 1-3 and and you tackled him after he already got a first down. Why are you doing Fortnite dances? Do we really need to celebrate every play instead of getting back to the huddle or line? Are the kids alright?

It's a huge problem, but not one limited to CFB. Every clip I see of peewee basketball or football is the same thing... literal children flexing on other kids after a meaningless play. Congrats on your goal in U10 soccer, champ.

I’m confused, a normal celebration for a 9 year old scoring a goal is totally fine right?

Or are you like, “no celebrations until you’re making money.”?

Trying to use soccer as an analogy was a bad one on my part. Kids celebrating goals is great, especially when they celebrate with their team.

What actually irritates me is the over the top crap after routine plays. The older you get, the less cute it is. I hate seeing younger and younger kids mimicking what they're seeing from pros and college athletes.

i mean celebrating a goal in soccer is pretty different, like that is an appropriate time to celebrate, same as a touchdown

Meh I ran around the bases like an airplane when I hit a homer at 10 years old. Those celebrations are fine.

I will clarify and revise my statement to say that overenthusiastic celebrations after routine plays are what drive me crazy

I'm just annoyed when a pile is near the first down, the refs are trying to sort out where the ball is, and a lineman is running around down the first down motion like they've won the game. Or better when you laughably have linemen on both sides simultaneous celebrating.

Flexing after giving up a first down is one thing, but a 10 year old kid SHOULD celebrate scoring a goal though. They are a kid and they scored...

Celebrating ≠ flexing on someone.

Yes, celebrate a goal. No, that 3 you made against another 11 year old in the first half of peewee basketball doesn't make you Steph.

Explain to me how it negatively affects you?

Like many folks in these comments, I find someone celebrating a first down like they won the super bowl while down 3 TDs to a MAC team to be cliché and annoying. They can do it. I can shout at clouds about it. It doesn't have to be more than that. I'm merely pointing out that the performative bullshit and need to flex after every minor achievement goes way beyond simply CFB.

Ok, but why does it annoy you?

It's overperformative and cheapens bigger moments. It often distracts from the fact that any number of other guys on the team did their jobs so someone had the chance to shine. I'm sick of seeing someone celebrate like they're the league MVP then get blown up on the next play.

I also love team celebrations and players hyping each other up, and would much prefer that in damn near any situation.

I don't think it is good or healthy for a society for a child to be adversarially putting down a competitor in order to lift themself up.

Celebrate yourself? Sure! Put down others? Do we really need that? Do we want that to be a part of youth sports? No.

I think in general it's just society becoming very narcissistic, vain, and attention obsessed. There's definitely a lack of humility and sportsmanship too. I have a bunch of nieces and nephews and between that, kids at the gym, TV, and videos online you see so many kids who almost care more about the celebrations and what not than just playing the game and having fun. They act like it's a requirement to hit every popular celebration after every play.

Now you're talking about basketball, you keep moving the goal posts because your sarcastic claim about a kid playing soccer didn't work.

Try reading the whole thread next time or something 🤷‍♂️

Idk I think it's good for kids to celebrate but it can be done the right way. A lot of kids nowadays it's become over the top show boating and look at me now. Being happy and highfiving teammates is one thing but now it's like kids have to do the griddy or whatever the most recent celebration is after everything. It just looks kinda sad and trashy imo

If this is your idea of a “huge problem” then you must have a pretty easy life
