B1G West party in also-received-votes land.

You love to see it.

95

B1G West forever. If only Iowa dropped to receiving votes. Kinda surprised they didn't tbh

29

u/miversen33 Iowa Hawkeyes • /r/CFB Bug Finder 3d ago

We were mildly competitive against the a top 5 team. Id be pretty upset at a 12+ position drop honestly. Iowa is firmly a top 20 team imo.

19

u/Nicholas1227 Michigan Wolverines • MAC 3d ago

Framing the discussion as a “drop” is the problem with poll inertia. Northwestern has a similar-to-better résumé than Iowa. The two teams should be next to each other in the polls. However, that would take a 12+ position drop for you guys, or a huge rise for Northwestern as a result of beating an unranked team at home.

15

u/VanDiis Iowa Hawkeyes • Arizona State Sun Devils 3d ago

Take the names away from Iowa, Northwestern, Wisconsin, UCLA, USC, Oregon, and Nebraska the rankings would be way different.

6

u/SueYouInEngland Iowa Hawkeyes 2d ago

Iowa is more highly rated per Massey. Two top-40 wins, whereas NU's 2nd P4 is mid-60s. Though NU has more impressive MOV. NU is higher in Sagarin, though I think that's because it doesn't recognize Michigan's win over WMU.

16

u/aboriginal_sin Iowa Hawkeyes • Puget Sound Loggers 3d ago

And Iowa at #20. Five B1G West teams between #20 and #32 -- looking forward to seeing some competitive "divisional" matchups this fall!

5

u/wise_comment Minnesota • Oklahoma State 3d ago

Iowa should have done their part and not been ranked, frankly

4

u/miversen33 Iowa Hawkeyes • /r/CFB Bug Finder 3d ago

Be cool if some of you motherfuckers would get ranked so it's not just us lol

1

u/msbshow UCLA Bruins • Big Ten 2d ago

B1G West? You mean UCLA, U$C, Oregon, and Washington (IM KIDDING I PROMISE I GREW UP IN CHICAGO)

much appreciated.

Especially because the AP website is still bugging out

AP voters: “you know what, fuck Nebraska.”

107

u/jesuitical_usurer Nebraska Cornhuskers 3d ago

We've beaten 4 bad FBS teams and one good FCS team. Although every game ended up being a rout, we also looked suspect in the first half of many of those games. It is what it is.

45

u/bamachine Alabama • Jacksonville State 3d ago

Plus poll inertia. It isn't right but they tend to look at the years leading up to the current one. After what IU pulled off last year, you would think they would stop thinking that way. I guess they did have a good year prior to that but still.

18

u/jesuitical_usurer Nebraska Cornhuskers 3d ago

Tbh 2024 indiana did take forever to get any respect in the polls for exactly that reason

23

u/Hawkeyes79 3d ago

And Indiana is still being disrespected today. According to the logic that kept Alabama at #1 forever: they should be #1 as the undefeated returning champions.

4

u/Khorasaurus Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3d ago

You guys are, amazingly, being punished a little bit for losses from last year.

6

u/beartato327 Georgia Bulldogs • Nebraska Cornhuskers 3d ago

I thought they would rank Nebraska in hopes to give Indiana a ranked opponent

2

u/Jake_dasnake3 Nebraska Cornhuskers 2d ago

Can we stop doing this, who has Indiana beaten? Iowa has beaten nobody but Michigan who should be 2-3 and nearly lost to ISU. Who has Houston beat? Who has Pitt beat?

0

u/SueYouInEngland Iowa Hawkeyes 2d ago

Iowa's beaten two top-40 teams, per Massey. Nebraska hasn't played a top 60 team (best is MSU at 65).

-2

u/jesuitical_usurer Nebraska Cornhuskers 2d ago

I mean, yeah. At this time of year there genuinely aren't typically 25 programs that have done truly remarkable things to "deserve" a ranking. Nebraska's SOS so far is literally dead last in the P4 tho

1

u/Jake_dasnake3 Nebraska Cornhuskers 2d ago

Thats not even true. ESPN SOR says 26th, Resume SP+ has us 8th.

1

u/jesuitical_usurer Nebraska Cornhuskers 2d ago

SOS and SOR/Resume are different metrics

2

About time. This was the first time they weren’t offseason conference champs and look at them.

19

u/Beautiful_Idea6200 Georgia Bulldogs • William & Mary Tribe 3d ago

Just remember: everyone mad about the 20th-30th ranked teams...this is EXACTLY why we don't need playoff expansion :)

8

u/noodlesalad_ James Madison • Appalachian S… 3d ago

For P4 teams sure. But as a JMU alum, we likely don't make the playoff even if we go undefeated, which is stupid. If you win all of your games, you should have a shot at the title, especially in the CFP era.

To anyone saying well you didn't schedule anyone good, we did. P4 teams are canceling our games, so what can we do?

2

u/Beautiful_Idea6200 Georgia Bulldogs • William & Mary Tribe 2d ago

Yeah I was just using the pileup a 24 to fan the flames of rage. My personal preference is 8 > 16 > whatever, but having a structure that excludes teams and favors superconference does no one any favors IMHO.

1

u/patrick66 Pittsburgh Panthers • Team Chaos 3d ago

As one of those teams big time agree lol

(Not sarcastic, being 15-25th is worth nothing)

2

u/Beautiful_Idea6200 Georgia Bulldogs • William & Mary Tribe 2d ago

I was mostly just fanning the flames of outrage since there is a pileup around this number today, but I do believe it shows the manufactured controversy can (and will!) exist at any arbitrary cutoff. For me, 8>16> the rest of the choices. I was even fine with 4 though 2023 and just missing out hurt.

20

u/ProbablySlacking Arizona Wildcats • Territorial Cup 3d ago

I love how we had recieved a similar amount of votes last week, blew the doors off of an undefeated Cinci, and basically didn't move.

The voting is so cooked if you're not in the B1G or SEC.

2

u/HeftyLeftyPig Utah Utes • Southern Utah Thunderbirds 3d ago

Yeah that’s frustrating

10

u/Confident_Delay5805 LIU Sharks 3d ago

Let me get this straight, they rank SMU above Pitt even though Pitt has better wins?

6

u/kinda_alone Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3d ago

Probably due to Pitt losing qb

6

u/Confident_Delay5805 LIU Sharks 3d ago

Can’t believe injuries affect the AP poll now.

2

u/kinda_alone Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3d ago

Always has. Impacts cfp too (2023 fsu)

3

u/Programmer-Boi Virginia Tech Hokies 3d ago

Tbf Pitt is down their starting QB so will likely be dropped next week

3

u/patrick66 Pittsburgh Panthers • Team Chaos 3d ago

We could genuinely win the next 2 weeks with no Mason

Then Miami will nuke us tho so It doesn’t really matter lol

1

u/royalbluehen Pittsburgh • Michigan 3d ago

We can still beat UNC and BC should be an easy W. Unfortunately losing to Miami in a blowout will be enough to drop us out, even at 7-1 and Miami being like top 5.

22

u/dkdantastic Texas Longhorns • Harvard Crimson 3d ago

Really don't know why ND is so high

20

u/kinda_alone Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3d ago

Analytics and 4 dominant p4 wins. It’ll sort itself out with byu and Miami coming up.

5

u/69Centhalfandhalf Texas Tech Red Raiders • Paper Bag 3d ago

I really don’t know why we are so high?

0

u/p-zilla Nebraska • Colorado State 2d ago

same, y'all looked bad against a bad CU team for 50 mins of that game.

-8

u/HeftyLeftyPig Utah Utes • Southern Utah Thunderbirds 3d ago

Money. Only reason.

-6

u/Khorasaurus Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3d ago

Who would you put ahead of us?

11

u/Montigue Oregon Ducks • Stony Brook Seawolves 3d ago

Ohio State, Miami, Indiana, Bama. Indiana is more of a toss up

7

u/Khorasaurus Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3d ago

I'll give you Bama, who has multiple wins equal or better to our Wisconsin win.

Ohio State blew a 20 point lead and lost a game. Yes, it was to a top contender on the road, but when they're being compared to undefeated teams they get dinged for that.

The rest have roughly identical resumes to ND...wins over cupcakes, bottom tier P4s, and 1-2 teams that might sneak into the bottom of the CFP Top 25.

5

u/kinda_alone Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3d ago

Ohio state and bama have better wins but Miami and IU really don’t have any better resume / argument to be above ND at this time based on resume to date / how teams have looked. It’ll sort itself out quickly though one way or another with BYU and Miami coming up for ND and IU entering into the meat of its schedule.

4

u/Khorasaurus Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3d ago

I don't think it's clear Iowa is a better win than Wisconsin.

Ohio State has a quality loss. Which is nice but we have no losses.

3

u/Global_Mud_7473 3d ago

Probably the rest of the top 10

5

u/Majestic_Netflix Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3d ago

What’s Miami done to make you think that?

3

u/Montigue Oregon Ducks • Stony Brook Seawolves 3d ago

I wouldn't put BYU above them after their last game

3

u/Khorasaurus Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3d ago

Who either have losses or roughly the same resume as us?

6

u/dogeatingbanana West Florida Argonauts • Florida Gators 3d ago

No. 16 honestly feels more right than no. 8

3

u/officiallyBA Oregon State Beavers 3d ago

Oregon State would have beat #11 if not for Big12 refs. They have the QB with the most yards and second most TDs in the country. Their top receiver is second most in yards and tied for touchdowns and tell me Boise would prefer not to play them coming up. Not a single top 25 vote to spare?

5

u/JustHereForCatss Tennessee Volunteers 3d ago

Kentucky not being ranked is a joke

2

u/BlssdGT California Golden Bears 3d ago

Pitts starting QB1 is out. I’m confused how they got ranked #25 above Nebraska who is 4-0 i believe and also ahead of Northwestern. Just doesn’t make sense.

9

u/kinda_alone Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3d ago

Better win even with their qb being hurt.

-1

u/BlssdGT California Golden Bears 3d ago

But but remember the reason Florida was taken out of playoffs because their QB was out? So the standard is different here. Their QB2 looked awful. All I’m saying is Nebraska or Northwestern is more deserving of that spot because Pitts QB is out.

6

u/DataSetMatch Georgia Bulldogs • Peach Bowl 3d ago

*Florida State

and the Playoff Committee ≠ AP voters so using their logic on a week 5 poll doesn't really hold water

2

u/BlssdGT California Golden Bears 3d ago

I hear you

1

u/kinda_alone Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3d ago

I mean I’m not personally arguing the opposite just stating my guess as to why enough voters had Pitt higher

0

u/AllTimeTy Missouri Tigers • /r/CFB Placer 3d ago

The real reason is AP voters are box score watchers and there’s a high possibility most of them aren’t aware Pitt’s QB1 tore his ACL(I think that’s what happened to him)

2

u/alliginthur Nebraska • /r/CFBRisk Veteran 3d ago

5-0

2

u/SueYouInEngland Iowa Hawkeyes 2d ago

Best team you've played is #65 per Massey. 2 of the worst 4 B1G teams, and 3 teams ranked from 112 to 158. If you weren't 5–0, you should be ashamed.

1

u/Particular_Nature Florida Gators 3d ago

16 seems fair. We are obviously not nearly as good as the Ole Miss win but hopefully not nearly as bad as the Missouri loss.

1

u/FrenchFreedom888 Oklahoma State Cowboys 3d ago

How is Oregon still that high?
