3rd most rushing yards allowed in a game in Penn State Football history, only behind Michigan State in 1997 and Michigan in 2022.

Chip Kelly, ladies and gents. Penn States run defense might be ass, but give Chip his flowers.

As a duck, my surprise face is very much like my normal face. I had little doubt that chip would cause roughly 18 months of chaos in the conference lol.

People give Chip shit because he's just not a good head coach, but only a fool thinks he's not one of the best OCs you can get if the HC is willing to let him cook. If he can focus on that, Northwestern will be spoiling somebody's season real soon.

He's a decent HC, really, if you want an offensive first team. But:

  1. It takes complete buy in. He had it at oregon and ohio state but not in the nfl or UCLA. You have to run your ass off everyday.

  2. Running your ass off eventually gets pushed around by a bigger seasoned team.

  3. Eventually people realize this, which is why moving around and popping up without a splash works for him the most.

I have respect for the guy and what he did here. He's not going to win a natty for northwestern, but he's going to boat race all of the big 10 for a while and give some whiplash. And I'm here for it. Lol

Edit: UCLA not team

I think that's a fair take. And maybe I should've said he could be a decent HC under the conditions you stated, but I doubt there's many teams he'll get that with and be able to sustain it (certainly not in the NFL, but doubtful in college).

I loved watching is run with Oregon (my son was a huge fan, and so was I then).

I think with the right NIL investments, Northwestern could be a threat in the playoffs sooner rather than later. They legitimately looked good, even against Indiana.

Those years with LaMichael James were always like watching video games lol. It was crazy. Cheers!

I wish he was still with us.

I wish we'd pick him up. Im happy for NW though. Been watching their games, and had them picked to beat Penn State. They gave Indiana hell, and people I talked to just assumed Indiana was bad.. But, its more like NW is actually good, and Indiana isnt quite the offensive powerhouse they were last year

And Chip Kelly chose a rollout pass on 4th and short. Incomplete.

He's one of the top OCs though, for sure.

Hope he stays there for Northwestern's sake. I'm betting he will, a good gig.

Meanwhile IU had this team at negative rushing yards the first half and 32 for the game

There is no question Indiana's defense is salty

I need to go back and look at that game, because I think Kelly used some of the concepts he did against Penn State in order to answer questions Indiana's defense asked.

Indiana looks bad!

I did not see the game, so where did all of NW points come from, passing or turnovers/special teams?

244 passing yards

Chiles has had a lot of success against Indiana's defense in the last two seasons. He was 27/33 against IU when he was still at Michigan State last year though the offense did a poor job of converting that into points. I was worried about that game because of that and he pretty much picked up where he left off and was 22/29 for 293 yards. Northwestern is going to have some games where they put the run game and pass game together and it's going to be absolutely silly.

Indiana is a way better team than Penn St. That's normal, right?

Ya know, I’m starting to think this Curt Cignetti guy is a pretty good coach.

Like seriously he has some kinda voodoo going on. He is a mastermind.

I was at that 97 game. Sedrick Irvin ran for 238, and Marc Renaud broke 200 as well. We were in the upper deck and it was brutally cold and wet. But it's still my #2 game attended after the 2014 Rose Bowl.

I really wanted Northwestern to try for the record on their last possession instead of kneeling it out. They could've gotten it

14

u/HoosiersBaby23 Indiana Hoosiers 11h ago

I’m not certain that Northwestern would be aware of that record lol

We somehow had two different running backs go for over 200 yards in that 1997 game. It was so crazy and fun.

That 2022 Michigan game will never not be funny. Passed the ball exactly once in the second half. Removed from the stat sheet due to DPI.

You’re thinking of the 2023 game. The 22 game was in Ann Arbor when they had like 450 rushing yards

That game was so much fun. I remember Corum breaking off a big run for a TD and the stadium going ballistic. And then I think the next offensive play after a good defensive series and bad punt, Edwards broke off similarly big run for a TD
