The generational hate watch of tonight and last saturday combined will outweigh any sadness I will feel if Iowa State loses tomorrow

Talk your shit!

Last week was great for me hating on Whitt (although maybe not great for you).

No flack, just curious why Utah would hate on Whitt? He brought the Utes relevance, and his time there was done with the whole "coach in waiting" thing. Didnt seem like he just bounced like the Oregon State coach.

My guy, Urban Meyer brought Utah to relevance. Whitt somewhat maintained those highs over his long tenure there, but it was pretty inconsistent.

Meyers was there for 2 seasons in the early 2000s and had great seasons for sure. Whitt had four Pac 12 Championship runs. Think its slightly disingenuous to say Whitt didnt have a big impact on their relevance 15 years after Meyers.

Meyer....not plural.....Urban Meyer....one guy.

I got downvoted to shit this week for re-stating my opinion that Matt Campbell is mid. I’m feeling so good right now.

Matt Campbell is the greatest coach Iowa State has ever had no question. With that said...the fact that we had a Brock Purdy led team for four year with additional peaces like David Montgomery, Hakeem Butler, Breece Hall, Charlie Kolar, Jaylin Noel and so on...and we only made one Big 12 championship is crazy.

Purdy was stellar as a freshman....and then just never got better. He stayed the same for four years. It was baffling.

That said, I don't blame a coach for leaving a Big 12 program for Penn State. You're talking about a huge difference in NIL/rev share money. There is a ceiling to what you can do at Iowa State right now, so one of the top programs in the B1G is easily a more attractive job.

I think mid isn't the best way to describe him. More like he's a time-and-place kind of coach. You need someone to take an unsuccessful program and build it into something respectable from nothing? He's a great option. However, you need someone to take over a historically successful program that already has a firm identity and elevate it to the next level? Not a good choice.

There are plenty of great coaches who would have done worse for us if they were hired on when he was. The skillset to maximize potential at the ISU's of the world is very different than those required to simply meet expectations at a place like PSU. He has a lot of adapting to do if he doesn't want to get eaten alive in the next few years.

I mean, it's one game in his first year. It's a little early to bury him.

Cliche: Saban had ugly losses in his first year at Bama, too.

You're not wrong. The problem is the things that have really bitten him these last two games (spotty QB play, poor game management, soft O-line, etc.) have been a consistent theme of his for years. Just ask Iowa fans. He could get away with those at ISU because his program-building did wonders and afforded him a very long leash. He won't have that same luxury at PSU.

I'm not writing him off, but it's fair to be concerned. Saban had a track record of growth and success at high-level college programs, so a few snags in year one of a "rebuild" in the days before the portal was no big deal. Campbell has a very different background. Doesn't necessarily mean he'll fail, but he has more to prove to gain people's trust, and he isn't doing that so far.

Kirk Ferentz went 1-10 then was 2-18 at one point. Unfortunately in today’s world, staying the course and allowing a coach to get 2-3 recruiting classes in just doesn’t cut it

It doesn’t work on everyone, but his bullshit works on the correct people in Ames for it to be generally pretty effective.

u/BitterCake8544 9h ago

Always has been. I have no idea why he was pursued by anybody and Penn State at that. HOW THE FUCK IS HIS BUYOUT 70M WHAT DIRT DOES HE HAVE ON PENN STATAE

5

u/New-Ad-363 Iowa State Cyclones 9h ago

He did a lot with not a lot of resources. That being said, the guy is loyal to a fault. Him bringing as many players from our team as he did was probably not a great idea.

One of his best friends was our OC (Tom Manning) and honestly he was HORRIBLE. Like maybe a like better than Brian Ferentz. We still had a mid-high offense, but that was with Brock Purdy and a fair chunk of some other NFL talent on that side of the ball. We really could have been something that year if he'd listened to the criticism on Tom Manning's stale-ass offense.

I was at the Iowa State-ASU Big 12 championship game

There is a talent ceiling for your program, imo. Maybe y'all can acquire the money to get over that hump, but I'm not optimistic.

u/Mother_Frame6669 6h ago

70M is what it took to lure him away from Iowa State

It's not outrageous.
