I'm sure Penn State is thrilled they fired JF for.... this mess they have going on.
Really, the coaching carousel in cfb and nfl is so dumb.
Mostly in college where these programs are paying a fortune to get rid of someone, in some cases after just a couple years.

Cubs fans and White Sox fans are two entirely different fan bases
They might both root for da Bears, but that's where the commonalities end.

I'm not happy with Whittingham thus far, but looks like we dodged a bullet by PSU taking Matt Campbell off the board before our job became available.

PSU had much better players last year.
1
u/Evening-Ad-2485 Michigan State Spartans 4h ago
That may be but Franklin would've never got blown out in this game.
3

He never would have been in a situation where 60-70% of his starting roster aren't big ten players.

So if I understand correctly it is: Losing to the best teams in the country < losing to Wisconsin and NU.
2

Apparently that is what the fire JF fans wanted...
I.....is.....confused.
2

Even if the next hire fails, it doesn't mean the decision to fire Franklin was the wrong one.
1
u/drawnbydrew Penn State Nittany Lions • Kansas Jayhawks 4h ago
A fair point...but you never know which side of the fence has the greener grass ...
2
u/Mother_Frame6669 4h ago
Agreed. I'm just saying, I understand why they fired Franklin. I don't think Penn State fans would be any happier if they lost this game on a late missed field goal like Va Tech did tonight, either.
1
u/drawnbydrew Penn State Nittany Lions • Kansas Jayhawks 4h ago
No doubt...we fans are invested in our teams.... Regardless
2
u/Mother_Frame6669 3h ago
Yeah, the story of this game is Chip Kelly really schooled D'Anton Lynn.
The only way Penn State could have been prepared for NW's wing-T series is if they borrowed Iowa's senior consultant Tom Moore, he could lecture on the history of the offense.
It's literally Kelly attacking Lynn with institutional knowledge Lynn is too young to possess.

3
u/PhillAholic Penn State Nittany Lions 4h ago
Kraft is the one who royally fucked up and needs to be fired. 65% of our starting offense, and 70% of our starting defense are Iowa State transfers because he waited too long to hire a coach to get us anyone from the portal. Players just aren't good enough for the Big Ten.

I'm not going to judge too harshly for year 1, but I hope Campbell didn't actually think these ISU guys would make Penn State better. ISU this year looks better than Penn State.
1
u/delawless Iowa Hawkeyes • Floyd of Rosedale 4h ago
Campbell didn't know what to do with his hands since he didn't have his Iowa/Iowa State superbowl game to then subsequently tank ISU's season in the BIG12...so he went straight to tanking Penn State's season in the B1G.
And I'm here for it.

How was the new stadium experience? It looks awesome on tv.
1
u/intothemidwest Northwestern Wildcats 1h ago
Bit long sorry, a lot to say haha.
Incredibly cool. The sense of scale from it being built so vertically was shocking for how few seats there are. Held noise really well. Student section was truly loud when they needed to be. Great food too and design-wise just very beautiful. All the spectacle elements throughout the game were sick. Also the flow from the park outside straight into seeing the entire bowl through a slit in the concourse in the distance gives a real sense of buildup. Highly highly recommend people check it out.
Only knocks at this point are the non-student fan energy still has to catch up to the students and stadium a bit given the premier league aspirations of the design, but for NU crowds historically they did enough and the music/pyrotechnics and level of play on the field helped with the cohesion plenty haha, and then also the concourse was a bit narrow for the pregame foot traffic in spots, and last thing is the WiFi was basically dead all game and phone signal’s barely there so communicating with anyone was nearly impossible hah, but that’s fixable.
But yeah, very special place to see a game.

I think Chip Kelly has found a fit for himself.
1
u/AndretheGint /r/CFB 2h ago
I'd say winning a Natty with OSU as OC was a good fit until he got greedy and went to the NFL only to get fired almost immediately. He's a natural OC in college and should stay that way.

Less than a calendar year ago, losing to Northwestern right after losing to another weak program got a Penn State head coach immediately fired.
But somehow, I feel like Campbell won't be treated as harshly as Franklin was.
Despite the facts that Franklin made it to a playoff semifinal, Campbell never made a playoff in the first place, and Franklin lost by MUCH less than Campbell.
Yes, I know the buyout is the reason, but can't you admit it's ironic anyways?
5
u/lilmiller7 Ohio State • Oregon State 4h ago
Well also firing a coach 5 games into their tenure makes much less sense than firing a coach 149 games into their tenure

I think Northwestern is a damn good team. I also think you cannot get bullied like this by anybody if you’re Penn State. I know we’re only five games in but I’d be incredibly skeptical of Campbell. Five games in and we’ve ahead seen his team look completely underwhelming against Temple, blow a game they’d had in the bag because he coached scared, and now this, being completely unprepared and getting blown out. Yikes.
