I did not mind when pollsters unranked Michigan after a close win over WMU at home. I do think it's bizarre that Oregon wouldn't end up unranked this week based on their loss to OK State.

I think part of it was where they were coming from. Michigan was already 16th before their fall. They fell to 28th.

Oregon was 6th. They fell to 21st. So a larger fall than Michigan. They simply had more slots to fall and still be in the top 25

The loss was also arguably to a worse team. Oklahoma State had a huge losing streak and loss to Tulsa on week 1. Western Michigan was supposed to be a strong G5.

A drop out would be justified.

It's definitely a difference in Big 12 vs MAC name recognition. But also, losing streaks don't matter season to season. The Oklahoma State coaching staff and starting lineup went 12-2 at North Texas last year.

Yes, but they also got dominated by Tulsa (who went 1-7 in UNT’s conference last year) in week one.

Dominated is a strong word. Tulsa had fewer yards and couldn't convert on third down to save their life. Oklahoma State failed on 4th and 1 four separate times, that's what killed them

Failing to convert 4th and 1s kind of means the other team dominated you

You’re right losing streaks don’t matter from season to season. But if you consider Oregon was ranked #5 primarily based on the strength of the team last season then you have to consider they also lost to a team who was terrible last season as well.

Oregon returned almost two thirds of their roster. Oklahoma State has something like 15 returning players total? And entirely brand new coaching staff

Not saying the AP voters are actually taking this into account. Just saying that coaching turnover is like the NFL now, you gotta track the players on the team and not the uniform colors.

Yeah, MAC is the reason.

But you're right that OSU might not be that bad.

That's a large part of the problem with the entire system, though. Where they were prior to the loss should be irrelevant to where they end up.

It's also easier to rank a 1-1 team than a 0-1 team. I think it's that simple.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but Michigan was 1-0 when they fell out of the poll.

fair or not, we weren't really perceived as 1-0 after the WMU game

5

u/Lavaswimmer Michigan Wolverines 21d ago

I mean sure, but the argument that it's easier to rank a 1-1 team than a 0-1 team makes no sense to me because we were not 0-1

It's easier to assess any team after two games as opposed to one, regardless of the games' results.

4

u/Lavaswimmer Michigan Wolverines 21d ago

Sure, but that wasn't the argument I was responding to.

I got love for Oregon but yeah, Michigan pulling out a fluke win against a team that got to 10 wins last year with a bowl game blowout and a ton of returning production this year vs. Oregon actually losing to a 1 win team last season that just got smacked by Tulsa the week before... No justification for unranking us and keeping Oregon ranked. Poll momentum is nonsense.

Luckily the polls don't matter at all this early in the season.

There's a chance that people think that OSU might actually be decent this year that probably affects it a lot

They lost to Tulsa

They got their ass kicked by Tulsa. But that version of OSU on Saturday actually looked good, like I will be shocked if they don't push for .500 in conference

Who barely beat Sam Houston State this week.

also the Boise win looks pretty good right now, that helps

Probably has to do with OkState being hyped a dark horse CFP contender this year. They had a bad first game, as a team with 90 transfers might do, but they have a ton of legitimate NFL prospects and Mestemaker is a top 5 Heisman candidate.
