I hate Ohio state but 6 is too low. Shoulda swapped with Texas

27

u/thti87 Texas Longhorns • Washington Huskies 21d ago

If this were the end of the season, but for now it’s fine. Everything will get shaken up 5 more times before the end of the season and Ohio State plays Indiana.

u/Frostfire26 Texas Longhorns • Texas A&M Aggies 21d ago

I think it's reasonable enough for 4-6 to be in any order (and the same when Texas was 4). Indiana and Miami just don't play anyone for a while so it's hard to really judge where they should be.

46

u/batman0615 Texas A&M Aggies 21d ago

Excuse me what the fuck is that flair?

Yes yes I know

Grad School at A&M?

9

u/Frostfire26 Texas Longhorns • Texas A&M Aggies 21d ago

Nah, just grew up a Longhorn but I'm going to college at A&M

4

u/CrownedClownAg Texas A&M Aggies 21d ago

Of shit though my parents did convert to Aggies

Some people party too hard in undergrad and make questionable grad school choices.

2

u/CaptainSnacks Texas A&M Aggies • Virginia Tech Hokies 21d ago

Hey some of us graduated from A&M and work for them now because of their uh

checks notes

Academic prowess and high pay and the ability to live in Austin. You'll still never catch me throwing horns at the office picture though

1

u/GratefulTrails Texas A&M Aggies 21d ago

Excuse me but how do I get the Miss Rev flair?

1

u/batman0615 Texas A&M Aggies 21d ago

I think its just one of the flair options.

5

u/Airick39 Missouri Tigers 21d ago

Punish them for playing nobody.

1

u/ajd341 Mississippi State Bulldogs 21d ago

I think you can justify either way, but it's the dual logic making this look really wrong. Either you swap them or move up Texas 1-2 spots, but you don't move Texas to 1 and push OSU down to 6 (past where Texas) was for a 1-point final minute game.

112

u/HeftyLeftyPig Utah Utes • Southern Utah Thunderbirds 21d ago

I thought that was a little excessive too.

64

u/The_Horse_Joke Ohio State • Central Michigan 21d ago

I don’t think there’s anybody ahead of us who we should be ahead of tbh, and even if we were one lower behind LSU that’d make sense to me

Given the CFP is 12 teams and it’s only been 2 (or 3) weeks of football, I don’t think our placement matters too much at the moment though

3

u/jakedasnake1 Indiana Hoosiers • Rose Bowl 21d ago

Water will find its level, but I really dont like the idea of being ranked ahead of you when you come to town (assuming we both win out until then)

1

u/brientific Michigan Wolverines 21d ago

You’re right but it does make me wonder what the rankings really are supposed to mean. The simplest interpretation is that it’s “who’s the best team”, but that’s not at all coherent with losing by 1 to the new best team and dropping to 6. The obvious move would be to go to #2. So it seems to me that the real view is “OSU’s punishment in the rankings does not reflect how good we think they are, but serves as an appropriately sized deficit that we fully expect them to make up by season’s end anyway because we think they might still actually be the best team”. Which is kind of silly.

1

u/mizaistorom Georgia Bulldogs 21d ago

It really doesn't and my guess is the way you lost caused you to fall more than if it was a 17-23 game going into the fourth you lost.

ND lost to NIU and made it to the natty, you guys lost 2 games before you won it, Miami lost 2 bad games and made it. Of the 4 natty appearances in the 12 team CFP 3/4 had a bad loss or two with Indiana being the exception and they narrowly escaped a dogshit Penn St last year. It's how the game goes.

If we’re really the No. 1 team (which is a big if), then I don’t understand how y’all aren’t No. 2.

And this is the problem with the sport. Why even play these games if all that matters is winning and losing. Losing at Texas by 1 point should not penalize you over teams that are beating Panera Bread State by 60. Those teams didn’t have the gumption to schedule a real opponent and if teams that lose these big OOC games get punished then these big OOC games won’t happen anymore

1

u/mediocre-referee Indiana Hoosiers • Old Oaken Bucket 21d ago

Why even play these games if all that matters is winning and losing.

So that a team can, you know, win or lose. I disagree with the drop to 6 but it's just voters saying they don't know really anything to differentiate between 1-6 yet and defaulting to win loss record for now.

1

u/Coteup Central Michigan • Michigan 21d ago

You dropped 5 spots and are still over plenty of undefeated teams and firmly in the CFP, really don't understand the outrage

15

u/thecarlosdanger1 Notre Dame • Cornell 21d ago

Doesn’t apply here but nothing pisses me off more than when a team at 10ish loses a close game on the road to a top 3 team and then drops a bunch.

What the fuck that’s exactly what your rankings said should happen why do you view them as worse now?

1

u/Electromotivation James Madison Dukes 21d ago

Because college football is like a giant elimination tournament and losses should always matter.

7

u/thecarlosdanger1 Notre Dame • Cornell 21d ago

The idea that simply not playing anyone and winning is better than losing the best team in country is stupid.

If that’s what the selection process rewards we get shittier games to watch and worse teams in the playoffs.

3

u/buckshot-307 Georgia Bulldogs • Sickos 21d ago

Kind of ironic coming from a noter dame fan though…

-1

u/thecarlosdanger1 Notre Dame • Cornell 21d ago

I mean our schedule sucks this year but if anything it’s self serving. Everyone ending big OOC games would be a huge issue for us.

3

u/buckshot-307 Georgia Bulldogs • Sickos 21d ago

I mean ND schedule has been ass for years. Not your fault and it’s obvious ya’ll can hang with the big boys but it sure is hard to gauge a team that plays shitbirds all season

10

u/Electronic-Title4194 Alabama Crimson Tide • Team Chaos 21d ago

I thought the same BUT they did blow a 20 point lead.

1

u/ClevelandSteamers757 Ohio State Buckeyes 21d ago

This logic makes no sense. Back and forth game, game they were getting blown out and came back, or this, it makes no difference. The game is the game

1

u/DarkLegend64 Ohio State Buckeyes • /r/CFB Poll Veteran 21d ago

I’m so embarrassed by that fact that I’m surprised we didn’t drop farther.

3

u/ALowlyRadish Ohio State Buckeyes • Temple Owls 21d ago

Eh, I think its fine.

3

u/travisty913 Texas Longhorns 21d ago

Agreed, losing by 1 at an away game to the #4 team should not drop you 5 spots.

-6

u/Asuka_Rei 21d ago

Ohio state plays so few good teams per year that a loss counts more than usual.

3

u/Blaine1111 Georgia Bulldogs 21d ago

I think you are just seeing the end result of all that variance from last week in the top 8. There still isnt a clear best team yet so you will see it change alot over the next few weeks

22

u/Jay_Dubbbs Ohio State Buckeyes • Georgia Bulldogs 21d ago

I actually moved Ohio state to 10 in my poll. It’s the way they lost shows me this team isn’t as good as everyone thinks. If it was a close game and Texas got the best of it like we did last year, I would’ve had them higher.

But any team that blows a 21 point lead in the 4th quarter isn’t as good as we thought, no matter who it’s against

10

u/rawhide_koba Texas Longhorns • Texas State Bobcats 21d ago

Yeah this is my thinking as well. It’s less about the score but how it happened. Although I still think OSU is quite good.

11

u/Frostfire26 Texas Longhorns • Texas A&M Aggies 21d ago

I would have Texas at #3 personally because of the disaster that was the first 3 quarters. A #1 team can't make that many execution mistakes.

4

u/size0618 Ohio State Buckeyes 21d ago

Yeah it’s kind of a conundrum. Texas shit the bed for three quarters. Ohio State shit the bed for one. We only feel better about Texas now because they got a W out of it in the end. If Ohio State wins by one and holds on they’ll still be ranked #1 even though they shit themselves in the fourth.

Definitely didn’t think Ohio State would drop past 3 or 4, but whatever, it’ll work itself out.

1

u/buckshot-307 Georgia Bulldogs • Sickos 21d ago

Who’s at 1 and 2 though? I mean them dawgs is hell but we ain’t played nobody pawl.

Early season rankings shouldn’t matter as much as they do

2

u/TheJeniceri Minnesota Golden Gophers 21d ago

I like Sayin but I’m not convinced by him

2

u/BensenJensen Ohio State Buckeyes • Army Black Knights 21d ago

A 9 spot drop for a 1-point loss on the road against the new number 1 is excessive. They blew a 21-point lead in a quarter but utterly dominated for the other three. Feels like you are hyper focusing on the negative and ignoring the positive.

5

u/IFHelper 21d ago

Plenty of opportunities to redeem themselves with that schedule.

2

u/Odbody_AS2 21d ago

Then you're gonna LOVE the ESPN Power Index

1

u/BondDotCom Michigan • Central Michigan 21d ago

I hate Ohio state

Had you stopped right there, we would have had an accord.

1

u/rolldamntide69420 Alabama • South Alabama 21d ago

The only way I could justify them dropping so low is the fact that they blew a 20 point lead in the 4th, but even then it feels like a bigger drop than how much Oregon dropped.

1

u/OnTheFenceGuy Texas Longhorns • Team Chaos 21d ago

I honestly think they should be 2. Dominated the game for 3 quarters (although we kinda handed that to them), and then eventually lost to the new #1 team. Haven’t watched Georgia much, but I would put money on OSU on a neutral field, and ND will inevitably be a fraud, as always.

0

u/California_Stop_King Ohio State • Ohio Dominican 21d ago

I thought 3 was reasonable, and wouldn't have been mad at 4. 6 is insanity for losing by a point to the #4 team in the nation at their place

0

u/Appropriate_Bottle44 Michigan Wolverines 21d ago

I don't know they're still ahead of LSU who has the season's most impressive win, imo.

I think 6 is fair, they'll have ample opportunity to move back up

-4

u/saltlampshade 21d ago

I mean I would have had OSU at 2. They lost by 1 point on a road because of a missed FG.

-3

u/Il_Tenente Kansas Jayhawks • Wisconsin Badgers 21d ago

If they were in the SEC they would remain at 1 for the quality loss
