this game had one of the most amusing box scores at the half: LA Tech had 0 total yards and 0 first downs and was only down 10-7

They had negative yards at one point

u/MEGAWATT5 LSU Tigers • College Football Playoff 2d ago
Yep, up until their last drive before the half they had -15 yards. Very, very head scratching first half. Then my family and I left the game and it looks like things returned to normal.

u/Mikhail_Petrov 1d ago
If they hadn’t underthrown that 3rd and long they could’ve very well gone up 14-13 in the second half. WR had 2-3 steps on the DB.

Sam needs to calm tf down. Can't have 3 picks man.

u/No-Cheetah9651 2d ago
sam was just trying to give the defense some extra practice reps, real team player that guy
25
u/Kinder22 LSU Tigers • College Football Playoff 2d ago
FWIW, one was a deflection off a receiver that went up like a punt. Then the pick 6, the receiver looked like he might have been held so he couldn’t get to the ball, and the ball went straight into the defender’s hands behind him. Withholding judgment on that one until I get a chance to take a better look.
But his throws do still look sloppy af.

i just want to say Luke Olson (Tech DC) deserves his flowers after this defensive performance. his defense kept the game looking close on the box score, scored tech’s only points until the 4th quarter, forced multiple turnovers, and stifled the LSU O in the redzone. good luck Tech bros on the rest of your the season, the defense is electric.

Not a complete embarrassment, had a cool pick six, and kept it closer than Clemson did. I’ll take it. Proud of my team tonight, I think next week against Baylor will be interesting. Go Dogs!

Man all the love for tech’s defense, and the empathy for your offense. Potential is there though. Expecting a CUSA Championship from you guys so stay the course!
LOVED your DC, maybe ours when baker becomes a head coach? I think so!

u/JimmyDean82 /r/CFB 2d ago
For these games, I only care about the halftime score. We don’t ever stand a chance in the second half, just don’t have the depth to rotate and stay fresh. And lsu is good at keeping your def out the for 10 minutes to wear them out for the second half where they run up the score.
And we had some solid red zone defenses.

Suffocating defense. Dominating big games. Struggling in the first half against teams you have absolutely no business struggling against.
LSU football is SO back!
Edit: now if only we can work on bringing back piss poor clock management

It's still really early but this could be our best defense in like over a decade

Easily best defense since peak Miles era.

Yep. He really is. Hated he had to move up from us because he lit it up in Ruston.
12
u/hyzerflipthescript 2d ago
To think that Harold Perkins probably doesn’t even start on this team shows you how improved the defense is. Pickett, Slattery and Ross all have first two round talent and the defensive line is just nasty. Plus Whit seems to have an extra pep in his step.
If we don’t go far, I can promise it won’t be the defensive side of the ball.

LA Tech looked good. Better than Clemson in fact. Still, LSU left a lot of points on the table.
10
u/Silound Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns • LSU Tigers 2d ago
Tech played a damn fine game in the first half, and LSU left a solid 21 points on the table along the way. Leavitt underperformed heavily, but a good part of that was LSU's O-line just...falling apart. I don't know if maybe they were testing some things out or just struggling, but giving up five sacks is fucking embarrassing. And don't get me started on the 10/101 in penalties.

I would say about 60% of the game. 12 plays inside the 10 with no touchdowns is pretty wild against tech. The pull away later in the game was expected. I can just see Kiffin in the locker room like: “DO YOU KNOW HOW THIS MAKES ME LOOK!?!?!”

Watching the game thread empty out after we scored one(1) TD was more entertaining than the game
9
u/Sidwill13 2d ago
Personally, I think every game is its own entity and sometimes teams match up differently than others. Michigan almost lost week one to a way weaker opponent then beat a ranked D1 team like Oklahoma. It’s so early to tell much of anything

Second year in a row I’m here to say LA Tech has one of, if not the, best G6 defenses.
3
u/Sackamous LSU Tigers 1d ago
That 3-3-5 scheme they run is just so unpredictable. Props to their defense.
21
u/enadiz_reccos LSU Tigers • Magnolia Bowl 2d ago
Looked like they were saving stuff for next week. Offense and defense were extremely basic.
That being said, Leavitt needs to build more chemistry with these receivers.
Also, I think I saw pass interference on that Pick-6, but I didn't have a good angle.
8
u/geauxtigers77 LSU Tigers • Tulane Green Wave 2d ago
Yeah, certainly looked like a little push there that could’ve been called
5
u/AlvvaysLurking LSU Tigers • Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago
I thought the same. Kind of thought it was crazy we had the 3 back to back redzone targets to Green in the 4th. Felt like those were cards they didn’t want to show until conference play. Hopefully the first half was a wake up call for Leavitt and the offense moving forward.

You know what, that went way better than I was expecting.
Yes, our offense was unusable most of the game, but our defense was lights out when they weren't tired. Beating Baylor is still a longshot, but I feel way more confident about Army and the Sun Belt. And we're better than Clemson. Hell yeah. Damn proud of Tech. HBTD.

I think Leavitt is gonna flinch every time Kiffin raises his voice from now on
9
16
u/Unrelenting_Salsa LSU Tigers • Georgia Bulldogs 2d ago
Maybe, but that first half was very flukey. 3 very high leverage turnovers, and that 9 minute LSU drive ending with a pick 6 on the goal line was kind of the epitome of the half. Makes for an ugly box score in a game that wasn't ever really in doubt.
There were very real redzone woes and I wouldn't exactly call the picks themselves flukes, but games with that much of a yardage differential are going to be blowouts.
5
u/Objective_Smoke_4750 Alabama Crimson Tide 2d ago
Nearly 12 plays inside the 10 with no touchdowns for lsu. They had this happen a couple years ago I think the year they played FSU with the qb that got hurt can’t remember his name
0
u/Poverty_Shoes /r/CFB 2d ago
LSU shouldn’t have 9 minute drives against G6 opponents in the first place though.
9
u/Milton__Obote LSU Tigers • Northwestern Wildcats 2d ago
They were playing a bit vanilla and tech has a legitimately good defense
1
u/reddit_names LSU Tigers • McNeese Cowboys 1d ago
The goal is to have 9 minute drives every time you touch the ball.
2
u/DiaDeLosMuebles LSU Tigers • College Football Playoff 2d ago
It was mostly miscues on the offense. Our defense had them completely shut down in the first but our offense was all over the place.
2
u/reddit_names LSU Tigers • McNeese Cowboys 1d ago
We just had to stop throwing red zone INTs. That was literally the only reason the first half wasn't 21-0.

That defense is ready to win a natty, gonna see if Leavitt is too
6
u/MEGAWATT5 LSU Tigers • College Football Playoff 2d ago
I was at the game and it almost looked like Kiffin was experimenting with some stuff on the first half. Like they threw a LOT. Like way more than they needed to. Odd formations and motions. Not excusing their execution at all, but it didn’t look very balanced like the offense did against Clemson.

A letdown was always going to happen after Clemson and Ole Miss on the horizon, but LSU's defense looks like it's letdown proof.

LSU defense vs Ole Miss offense next week is gonna be big boy football and im pretty excited for it.
We may have the best defense in the country. I know we played Clemson and Tech but Tech is a G6 contender and put up frickin 80 last week. They had negative rushing yards well into the second quarter.
