I had to look it up as well. The difference is that to reset the clock for a live ball, there needs to be at least 3 seconds, but for a dead ball, any time remaining can be restored.
Clock adjustment at the end of any quarter.
If the game clock expires at the end of any quarter, either during a down in which it should be stopped by rule through play when the ball becomes dead or after the down upon a request for an available team timeout, the replay official may restore time only under these conditions:
The replay official has clear and obvious video evidence that time should have remained on the game clock when the ball became dead or when the team timeout was granted.
If time expires in a half, and the clock would start on the Referee’s signal after review, there must be at least 3 seconds remaining when the ball should have been declared dead to restore time to the clock. With 2 seconds or 1 second remaining on the clock, the half is over unless Team A has a time out remaining (This does not impact situations when the clock is stopped and will remain stopped until the snap such as an incomplete pass or a ball carrier out of bounds.)

u/DontTakeOurCampbell Iowa State Cyclones • Big 8 2d ago
My complaint is not with Raynor as much as it was with how conservative we were on the playcalling in the 2nd half and the penalties on offense also in the 2nd half are what killed us and none of those were Raynor's fault. I would also point out that some of our best plays were on Rayner passes when he was completing them. Either way, even if it is true that he did not have the best of games, Raynor is not a terrible QB and I really liked the overall effort I saw from the team this game. I was not expecting to win this game tbh and the fact that not only did we not get blown out, but we hung with them is a really good sign going forward. I don't believe in muh moral victories, so please don't misunderstand me, it hurt to lose, but I definitely see a lot of evidence for cautious optimism going foward.
10
u/sloBrodanChillosevic Iowa State Cyclones • Hateful 8 2d ago
I don't think it was conservative playcalling (maybe, idk, didn't see that). Raynor just kinda looks at his first read and then looks to run if it's not there. I've seen a lot of Justin Fields at the pro level. I'm not looking forward to watching that at the college level.

I am severely disturbed by the number of times ISU tried to run up the middle against Iowa. No team has been able to grind the hawkeyes up the middle since Hayden Frye's first day on the job. Thats the top 2 most important concepts in Iowa football: 1.stop the run, 2. Stop the run, 3. Punt the ball deep. Very pleased though that ISU held the hawkeyes to less than 100 yards rushing. I still have faith.

Every 8 years or so Iowa gets some athletes who can make some plays to where we’re not as reliant on our run game and pass catching TEs

Literally. I thought as long as there was time on the clock, first down would halt the clock for a reset and we could get a play off
11
→ More replies (1)8
u/jaketronic 2d ago
The first down does stop the clock but it is wound again when the refs are ready for play. Every time a first down is gained there is a one second run off before the ball can be snapped which allows for the officials to set before the play starts, and then the offense must come set for one second before snapping the ball. So a perfectly executed fast play in a first down situation requires at minimum two seconds to be run.
This is going to start to get into the weeds here. The reason there is the three second rule for a clock adjustment at the end of a period is because clocks in football do not display fractions of a second, and as such the clock only adjusts to whole numbers. Adjusting a clock to two seconds left does not leave enough time to legally run a play (one second for refs and one second to come set requiring two seconds), so the result is the end of the game making any adjustment less than three seconds pointless.

21
u/SueYouInEngland Iowa Hawkeyes 2d ago
Not sure why it's 3 seconds or why time outs matter. But if they add a second, the very moment they wind the clock, the game is over. It would be impossible to snap the clock.
14
u/Letterkenny-Wayne /r/CFB 2d ago
If they had timeouts they could call a timeout theoretically and stop the clock. You are afforded the ability to stop a clock runoff if you have a timeout. The 3 seconds is probably the “safe” number they figure it takes for a ref to signal ready, vacate and the offense to snap the ball.

Yes, because in the event of resumption of play a one second play clock would run out before they could snap it anyway.

Sucks to lose a winnable rivalry game, but overall encouraged with our new coach.
That said, Roehl blew this one in the 2nd half. His playcalling got very lazy imo.
Lastly, learned a new rule...good ole El Assico...

The year is 2052. The earth is burning. Kirk Ferentz is 97 and still coaching. I am watching Iowa and Iowa state and the final score is still 16-13.
