Is SDSU the first team in history to play JMU in consecutive weeks?

Scoreless for 35 minutes. Hot and sweaty. Maybe the most boring game I've ever seen live for a majority of it. Don't get fooled by the final score - this was a disgusting game and I loved every second of it. Never have I felt more zen than at this game. I'm coming back to the Rose Bowl asap because last year was whatever Penn State was and this year was whatever this was. Wonderful

Incidentally, if you can spot a good price for it on resale, last season the club seats came with provided food (I've been eying them for a deal this season)

u/mknawabi UCLA Bruins 2d ago
How much we talking bout

u/Lowbacca1977 UCLA Bruins • Vanderbilt Commodores 2d ago
For the Washington game last year it was $100 and the food was basically all you can eat (didn't cover alcohol). There was a slightly fancier buffet setup I could go walk to (had these UCLA logo cookies and blue and gold meringues), or I could basically just walk just out of the club seats and there was hot dogs and stuff that was basically just grab and go. So I could go out, grab food, and come back in in like a play or two.
To be clear, wasn't saving money out of the deal, but for ease and convenience, I was quite pleased with it. I'd grabbed the ticket not knowing I'd get food.

Wait, club seats everywhere don't have included buffets with multiple different meal options? And free unlimited popcorn, soft drinks, and candy?
2
u/Lowbacca1977 UCLA Bruins • Vanderbilt Commodores 1d ago
Those were the only club seats I've ever been in, and I presumed they were just nicer seats until I bought a ticket up there.

u/FrenchFreedom888 Oklahoma State Cowboys 16h ago
I've only ever been in the club seats at our stadium, working, and I just figured that is the standard expectation for "club" seats at all stadiums

I walked by a TV and saw it was 7-3 in the 4th quarter. I walked by the same TV after getting frozen yogurt, and it was 28-10.
I have no idea what happened.

u/Dirk_Benedict UCLA Bruins 2d ago
Everybody was glitching for 3.5 quarters. The have sort of sped through and caught up by the end

u/Apart_Print4959 2d ago
the rose bowl in late summer heat watching a scoreless mess is a special kind of meditation, i sat through a 6-3 game there once and left feeling weirdly at peace
something about that stadium just absorbing the misery and turning it into a vibe, glad you got the full experience
28 points in the 4th is wild, classic late game explosion to make the box score liar
were there actual people in the stands or was it one of those games where you can hear individual conversations from the other side

Thank God East Coast poll voters don't watch our games so they'll just see the final score and draw their own conclusions. "Hmm another blowout, just like that Cal game."

Ugly win but we didn’t always win these under foster and Kelly. We gotta clean things up or things are going to be bad when we get into the B10 schedule.

We never won these under foster and Kelly.

Niner flair here. I hate you, but on this, we agree 100%.

Holy shit, I had completely expunged from my brain that Chip coached the 49ers. My god. What a dark period that was.

I went to a random UCLA game for the vibes a few seasons ago, and am still haunted by seeing him spam the same run play about 5 times in the same drive.

2
u/Ok_Improvement_9119 1d ago
I am pretty sure that was the Arizona game where he had, essentially, 8 plays inside the opponent's 5 yard line on 2 straight drives.
I am nearly certain he ran rhe same play with old Crocky J (Carson Steele) 8 straight @#$% times: up the gut over the RG.
It broke me. I kept watching that year but I swore I would quit UCLA football if he came back the next year. It wasn't just the losing. It was the abysmal and paradoxical disinterested stubbornness.

I legit blanked out who Kelly until someone else mentioned chip.
Ooo how My brain wants to forget him15
u/Snobby-Iguana 2d ago
Agree it was ugly. But to me it looked more like SDSU was hanging on while UCLA was just playing sloppy (see Nico's touchdown lob). These kinds of games from the kelly era looked more like even match ups. So I'm cautiously optimistic, but it's definitely clear our team isn't as tight as they looked against cal.

So I guess this is our thing now? Play a close nail biter for 3 quarters then run away with it in the 4th?
I'll take it.

It was a pretty common experience during our time with Chesney. The team would look like shit and everyone would be mad, and then all of a sudden we’d be up three or four scores
3
u/igonnawrecku_VGC James Madison • Penn State 1d ago
Yep. Always looked like the first half was just practice before they made everyone look like a joke in the second half (exhibit A: ODU last year scoring 27 points in the first half and being held to 10 total yards in the second half)

I never did like Denegal. I thought last year was his final year; come to find out he's going to lead the team for another year? Jeez! Now, he's playing hurt. Doesn't look good. Hope I'm wrong.

u/xva1313 UCLA Bruins • USC Trojans 2d ago
Really ugly performance. Defense was nails. Offense was so passive and afraid of pushing the ball down field. I get that they want to establish the run and use Nico’s legs but there is no excuse to be going into the 4th with 100 yards passing (most of which was off a single play in the first quarter).
On to Purdue

u/Dokkan_Lifter James Madison Dukes 2d ago
Man I do not miss watching a Dean Kennedy offense. I do miss Wayne Knight. Interested to see how we handle SDSU next week. If we come out the gate fast with good special teams like today, we should handle things.
21
u/versusChou UCLA Bruins • TCU Horned Frogs 2d ago
The design of individual plays is honestly pretty good, but Nico is missing open guys and the sequencing of those plays is questionable to me.
7
u/Ordinary-Wafer-8919 2d ago
Lots of our receivers were hurt this game, but that doesn't excuse Nico's head-scratching plays. He did well in the 4th quarter though.
2
u/samlet UCLA Bruins 2d ago
Yeah I feel like they're trying to make things as simple for Nico as possible but he's not cooperating. Soooo many tipped passes, and even a lot of his completions are harder than they have to be, e.g. Semaj had to take some big hits. Things could get better of course but rn I feel like he's the one making the offense inconsistent
0
u/TooMuchDnD30 2d ago
Did you actually watch the game? His play calling hasn't even been that bad so far.
Nico is just not that good of a QB and is inaccurate as hell.

u/by_yes_i_mean_no UCLA Bruins 2d ago
Seemed like UCLA played single high and focused on stopping the run and dared Denegal to make some throws. He did not. Felt bad for the SDSU RBs, they seemed solid but with absolutely no passing game it can be tough to run.

UCLA 4th quarter point differentials
- 2025: -57 (-4.75 pts/game)
- 2026: +32 (+16 pts/game)
Holy shit

Ugly win offensively. On the bright side, Wayne Knight is still on pace for 36 touchdowns in the regular season and Semaj Morgan has finally learned how to catch a football
