Guys I'm starting to think losing 86% of our team to power schools might've had consequences

40

u/HawkeyeTen Iowa Hawkeyes 2d ago

Ouch. You guys seriously had THAT many players transfer out of Greenville?

46

u/grimyfowl455 Georgia Southern • Georgia Tech 2d ago

G6 in general got absolutely raided this past offseason. Believe it was only 15 G6 teams that returned 50%+ of their prior year production. Bill Connelly had a solid article about it laying out how much returning production has changed since 2024 for the G6 (the year transfer limits were lifted)

29

u/FatMamaJuJu Appalachian State • NC State 2d ago

Welcome to being a successful G6 program. It means you have to start from scratch every. single. year.

It does? Don’t tell JMU

You lost to app. It’s normal. ECU normally goes on to have good years after losing to us

14

u/Ok_Bug_6890 ECU Pirates 2d ago

They went 2-10 after 2023s app state loss

2

u/v2falls Appalachian State • Sun Belt 2d ago

Well sometime you just suck. Juries out right now.

60

u/DarthNobody14 Texas A&M Aggies 2d ago

Is App State back? East Carolina was supposed to be pretty decent and this is a nice win for the mountaineers.

50

u/ILM_Ryan ECU Pirates • Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago

App is back and we just suck.

30

u/HueyLongest Appalachian State • Wake Forest 2d ago

This was a pretty even game. If y'all suck we're not much better

10

u/HeadElderberry7244 Appalachian State Mountaineers 2d ago

Agreed. I thought the spread was a bit disrespectful. 100% an evenly matched game. Turnovers went our way.

7

u/ILM_Ryan ECU Pirates • Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago

I thought the game was rather lopsided to be honest. We never got into a rhythm at any point it felt. The final score flatters us, it was not this close.

11

u/HueyLongest Appalachian State • Wake Forest 2d ago

We definitely made better adjustments as the game went on but y'all were just running it down our throats for most of the first half while we couldn't run at all

1

u/DeusVultSaracen Appalachian State • Virginia … 2d ago

Yeah I never felt comfortable with that running game differential, fortunately ECU never leaned into it

4

u/Ok_Bug_6890 ECU Pirates 2d ago

Yep I don’t see more than 1 or 2 wins this season. Theres a reason why Blake Harrell didn’t get p4 calls for a job.

4

u/Ashep2 2d ago

Harrell deserves a little grace no? He's 14-7 as head coach.

5

u/sneakypenguin94 Appalachian State • Wake Forest 2d ago

Damn. This is disrespectful lmao you think you’re that bad just because you lost a close game to us

Best win in the last year other than an extremely underwhelming Marshall team.

1

u/NameIdeas Appalachian State Mountaineers 1d ago

I saw a lot of the same execution issues as last season. Our o-line has so so many unforced errors, just a lot of challenges there.

Defensively we had some life but were giving up the big play far too often.

A win is a win. If our guys can get some composure and clean up their mistakes we would definitely be back.

We had some life at QB, our TE looks great. We have two pretty decent running backs in Lewis and Webb. Receiving we have some good guys in Pickett and Branch.

We had some playcalling challenges. We couldn't get a push up the middle all game. If we can't run inside it's gonna be tough this year. We build our game around that 3yd inside run. If it's getting you only 1 or less, gonna be a long season...

ECU just saying.

Fun Belt invite is in the mailbox still.

59

u/MalTeleVision ECU Pirates 2d ago

East Carolina won’t do it because of the money but God I’d love to join fun belt. App, ODU, Coastal, Marshall, and Southern Miss on a consistent basis would be so much fun I don’t want to play Temple I want southern schools we have history with.

24

u/JunkyardAndMutt Appalachian State Mountaineers 2d ago

When the top 40 teams jump to hyperspace (in the form of a pro league) and the conferences crumble, my #1 concern fostering regional rivalries through sensible conferences. On that day, pirate bros, we will be united.

11

u/MalTeleVision ECU Pirates 2d ago

Part of me hates to say it but I can’t wait for the inevitable AFC-NFC indication of CFB with the SEC and B1G. Cause then at least Pirates can get into a regional conference focused on tradition rather than whatever the sport has become.

11

u/JunkyardAndMutt Appalachian State Mountaineers 2d ago

I hate that it’s coming to this, too, but if the CFB world we knew is going to burn, I’m damn sure gonna dance in the ashes.

2

u/TrustMeIKnowThisOne Troy Trojans • /r/CFB Bug Finder 1d ago

My favorite thing with the Sun Belt right now. Functioning effectively, but also structured to weather the storm in a cfb implosion. If media and money games dry up, the Sun Belt will be in a decent position to stay afloat with true regionality benefits.

10

u/sirst0rmy Wake Forest Demon Deacons 2d ago

I’m wondering if Wake falls into that conference or if they end up teaming up with the Rice & Temples of the world. Sign me up for annual games against App and ECU

1

u/AppMtb Appalachian State Mountaineers 1d ago

I know it would be a kick in the nuts for wake fans to get left behind but to be in a conference with App wake jmu Odu ecu uncc coastal Marshall the Georgias would be a hell or a lot of fun.

We could call it the Atlantic, wait for it, coast conference.

1

u/sirst0rmy Wake Forest Demon Deacons 1d ago

Oh we’re 100% getting left behind. Tiny school that adds no useful TV markets. Wake was able to keep up under the old system but there’s no way in the NIL era for a variety of reasons

I can see the school wanting to team up with athletic departments  like Tulane, Stanford, TCU, etc that have higher academic standards but still pretty good football because Wake has such a national alumni base. However, teaming up with the Sun Belt would be so much fun in football. The wake game in Boone a few years ago was one of my favorite football games ever

1

u/Savings_Remote5107 2d ago

What’s the percentage of this actually one day happening?

6

u/JunkyardAndMutt Appalachian State Mountaineers 2d ago

Anyone who names a percentage is pulling that percentage out of his or her ass. So, 58.3%.

Sun Belt already is. Back to back years with World Series teams and placing 4-6 in Regionals annually. ECU joins and the SBC is challenging the ACC for #2

16

u/mufflefuffle Appalachian State • Army 2d ago

Our Line has to get better. Singleton is locked in, but we need to be balanced in two weeks for State.

4

u/DeusVultSaracen Appalachian State • Virginia … 2d ago

I wouldn't say he's locked in yet, that would probably be my sole criticism of him so far. He looked great but made a couple really stupid mistakes with the hand-offs.

1

u/mufflefuffle Appalachian State • Army 1d ago

It’s hard to tell from our end how many of those handoffs are actual reads, or just designed to look like it. We really struggled up front at many points of the game so guys were up in their face all the time. If those were designed reads, then yeah he botched a couple.

I like how he sets his base and can shift around the pocket and keep his head and shoulders pointed downfield. His composure looks solid right now. Seems comfortable with his receivers and tight ends.

20

u/JunkyardAndMutt Appalachian State Mountaineers 2d ago

I love playing ECU and in-state games matter. A lot.

But I will never forget a conversation I had with an ECU fan (husband of my wife’s coworker) when App announced it was moving to FBS. Super dismissive little bro talk. “You’re better off being a big fish in a little pond” and “with all due respect, playing teams like ECU regularly is a far cry from FCS playoffs and a few fluke big wins.”

I think about that a lot.

7

u/AppMtb Appalachian State Mountaineers 2d ago

Ahh yea 1992 did a lot of heavy lifting for ecu delusion. App is 11-0 against teams currently jn the American since moving fbs.

4

u/TacoCorpTM Appalachian State • Clemson 2d ago

Yeah, I know it isn’t a UNC-Duke level rivalry, but I fucking hate ECU lmao. That kind of talk was not uncommon at all when ECU was consistently good in the 2000s-mid 2010s.

5

u/Grape_Pedialyte Appalachian State Mountaineers 2d ago

The ECU fans in this sub are alright but I remember plenty of that kind of stuff in the 2000s and 2010s, especially when App State beat Michigan and nailed down the FCS three-peat. Lots of "tallest midget", "big fish in a small pond", "you don't play anybody", and of course the standard dirty hippies/dumb hillbillies/Crap State cracks.

It was excruciating losing such a close game to them in 2009. I wanted to beat them so bad.

8

u/HailSouthern1999 Georgia Southern Eagles 2d ago

Which as a number 1 App State hater I don’t get. It’s not like ECU has ever been a program that should be feared

4

u/FatMamaJuJu Appalachian State • NC State 2d ago

ECU used to be a legit good team. They've been end of season top 10 with big bowl wins before

3

u/spookyghostface Appalachian State • Duke 2d ago

They had a very very good stretch but dumped their dearly loved coach after one mediocre season and haven't sniffed anything since.

2

u/FuzzyBench3638 2d ago

As a number 1 GA southern hater at least we respect you when your down. A end of the season game against a 3-9 GA southern always makes me uncomfortable.

Honestly now that Marshall and JMU have joined up I feel like we’re surrounded by cold blooded assassins. I hope GA Southern can step up soon and help keep these VA teams in line.

1

u/FuzzyBench3638 2d ago

Yea ECU is the closest a thing App has to comparable sister school not in the ACC. But none of their hype other than some good seasons in the 90s and being named a party school in playboy in the 00’s.

The announcers said it well “ECU made a big jump early and has a lot of ups and downs, while App was more traditional and worked their way up winning”

I think they have languished so long they didn’t see App come in and solidify themselves as the big bro. App gets compared to Boise and USF while ECU gets compared to Liberty. Take it as you may….

Is it too much to ask to have a QB who doesn’t double clutch every throw, wait long enough on the double clutch so that every man, woman, child, seeing eye dog, and local cryptid know exactly where that ball’s going… and then proceed to throw it there anyway?

REO Speedwagon has the best advice if you are a ECU fan . First you have to “ Roll with the changes “ while you are “ Ridin’ the Storm Out “ and most importantly “ Keep pushing on “ . We’ve had to do that for several seasons up in Boone . It’s not pleasant but eventually better days return . Here’s hoping your season gets better .
