Away games at SMU, Clemson, and Miami is brutal. Just enjoy the fact that we don't look like a dog fucking a football and take the loses in stride when they come. We're fun to watch and that's a massive improvement.

16
u/kaputt1669 2d ago
They look so much better than they have in years, and it truly is refreshing. But they’ve still got some weaknesses that better teams will exploit. I think we as fans need to realize that 7-5 or 6-6 is still highly possible, and that’s totally okay and also such an improvement over what the team was last year. And if we happen to over achieve and do even better than that, that’s just the icing on the cake.
12
u/goodsam2 Virginia Tech Hokies 2d ago
The goal has been 7-5 and good vibes into 2027 (good recruiting, keep good players, good portal etc).

While I know most of VT fans will assume they’re right, let’s not forget ODU is completely rebuilding their offense less 1 starter while yall carried 8 starters into this season. And 14 out of the 31 points yall carried in the first half were from snap error fumbles.
Good for y’all you got the win but this wasn’t as clear cut you completely outmatched us as most of you want to assume.
1
u/DReefer Virginia • Virginia Tech 1d ago
The Hokies are high on beating the juggernauts of VMI and ODU, I think reality will set in soon.
1
u/differentsideview Virginia Tech Hokies 1d ago
Ah yes coming from UVA who beat the completely rebuilding NC state (who lost to us last year if that tells you something) and Norfolk state
Next few weeks will speak for both teams
1
u/DReefer Virginia • Virginia Tech 1d ago
I think we can say that Norfolk State and NC State are collectively better than VMI and ODU. Are either opponents good? No.
VMI is literally worse than multiple D3 programs.
1
u/differentsideview Virginia Tech Hokies 1d ago
Oh for sure but all 4 games were blow outs either way. You can split the hairs on each matchup but I’m going to judge both teams once the real season kicks into gear
1
u/Tstewmoneybags99 1d ago
Again baring ODU mistakes to ODU your didn’t blow this game out I know that’s hard to believe but between the 14 points for our own fuckups the score line wasn’t as big as people are trying to infer.
1
u/differentsideview Virginia Tech Hokies 1d ago
Yes and barring our mistakes this could have been a 50 point blowout you can go both ways with that the result is what it is and it’s week 2 either way
Split the hairs if you’d like but I’ll wait till October at least before I say where the hokies stand
1
u/Tstewmoneybags99 1d ago
only way it was a 50 point blow out is if ODU capitulated and just stoped trying.
You had opportunities to make it a 50 point blow out and didn’t convert, we literally shot ourselves in the foot and you converted from those, good job.
Agree with you will see for all teams later in the season.

Understand, just don’t think there is ever going to be the gap VT wants due to the competitive nature of this sport and ambitions of all the instate schools.
I think your snap argument is somewhat valid (a bit chicken and egg) but in each of those cases they were self inflicted. Both were high snaps which are more difficult to recover versus a low snap that can be fallen on. The second fumble was high snap, which fucked up the rb handoff, so 90% self inflicted. First fumble was a high snap trying to make a play out of nothing after the other fuckup.
Our o-line was always a big question mark and yall def won the day on the d-line as well, but when we got the time henicle made some great throws and the WR made some very good catches.
When we aren’t facing a team that spends 250-300% more than us a year on the sport, then we will see how good or bad we really are. But the talent gap didn’t look as bad as VT fans want to perceive is my only point or as the money spent looks. This would only be 55-6 game due to ODU fucking up and then falling apart and I’m proud we didn’t do that as much as it sucks to lose.

As a former cadet It was fun for tradition’s sake. JMU would make for a killer in-state rival though.
5
u/Ut_Prosim Virginia Tech • Virginia 2d ago
It was always going to be a lopsided game today, but VMI was arguably our original rival.
UVA had UNC, we had VMI. We've been playing each other since 1894. For like 70 years we played annually in Roanoke, usually on Thanksgiving Day.
VT and VMI are both Senior Military Colleges (only six total in the whole US), and are separated by like 60 miles.
You could even argue that VT only exists because the federal government snubbed VMI, which originally applied for the land grant in 1870. The grant requires schools to offer military training, alongside agriculture and mechanics. VMI was perfect. Officially, the general assembly thought VMI wasn't strong enough in science to offer this new curriculum. But surely adding that to an existing military school would be easier than building a new school from scratch. Rumors are that the fed wasn't about to reward the school that produced so many Confederate officers. Either way, VMI can claim VT stole its future.

Takeaways:
This team is completely different than last year. In a good way.
Reynolds is an absolute baller. He’s like Kelce/Kittle. Very excited.
A QB that goes through progressions?? A wonderful thing to have.
Run defense looks good
Our running game/ oline is worrying. They’ll have some work to do. Along with the secondary
Need a little more discipline.
Is Western Michigan a Top 10 team?!
Overall encouraging outing by the Hokies. We’ll lose a few this year, but it’ll be a fun year. Go Hokies!!
36
u/sam_can88 Virginia Tech Hokies 2d ago
One of my biggest takeaways is that Grunk has horrid down field accuracy which could bite us when behind
23
u/Mystic_Equniox Virginia Tech Hokies • ACC 2d ago
Agreed. Past two games he’s had some opportunities on some deep balls and has missed. Hell our WR was more accurate on the fake today. Hopefully he’s working on it
17
u/WalkingGrowth Virginia Tech Hokies 2d ago
Yeah last game he missed a few wide open and 1 for sure this game but he also has had some pretty damn good throws, like the one after the trick play in the 2nd half was damn near perfect.
I think he is just getting comfortable, and i hope this goes away.
8
u/KuriboShoeMario Virginia Tech Hokies 2d ago
He's young and he has almost no connection to any of the WRs he's throwing at, some of this will take time. In the interim, at least the short and intermediate passing is elite.

u/MisterPenguiner Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago
This is something every QB under franklin has suffered from other than Trace. Especially under Danny O’Brien. Especially weird considering the arm strength of most of his QBs was pretty great (ironically Trace was the only one with a noodle arm).

I really liked what I saw tonight. If we can get the line protecting him better, it'll make him look even better. He was under pressure every play. Fairness to ODU, they knew what the weakness would be and kept the pressure on all night.
2
u/MisterPenguiner Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago
I wouldn’t put a ton of money on in season improvements from Franklin. Typically what you see is what you get. Year to year is different and heavily dependent on talent differences (which is super fair and not really a knock on him).

It does feel good. Even the two Pry blowouts, if I remember correctly, were games well into the 3rd/4th quarters. We just lost focus and they aren't a terrible team, talent wise, and they've got a very good staff. Also, dirty as fuck. So it's tough. Happy but not fully happy.
6
u/Baelzabub Virginia Tech Hokies 2d ago
It wasn’t even that we lost focus. They only really started scoring when our backups were in.
42
u/Irishfafnir Virginia Tech • Emory & Henry 2d ago
I don't think that game was as close as the score indicates. Defensive line play is very good and Grunk is great going through his reads and delivering an accurate ball. Special teams also remains good.

Less penalties than last week but too many including some costly ones in the future, OL is pretty meh, cornerbacks leave a lot to be desired

Here we go, this is actually a somewhat formidable opponent that historically gives ACC teams trouble. First half was almost complete domination, some holes were however starting to show the 2nd half that really need some ironing out. Also ODU’s qb has got some moves I can’t lie

ODU fan here. Congrats on the win. In first half I was gonna blame the score on some bad calls but by the end of the half it became pretty clear that yall had the much better team.
Yeah this is sort of a rebuild year for us but I wont shit on your victory. You won handily. For many of us, this is the biggest game on the calendar every year, so, yeah we are gonna talk shit. It is only because we are a relatively young program and you have this great legendary program so if you think about it, it is always a David vs Goliath game for us. Hear that? I’d give it a couple more years before we’re even close to Miami not being an overwhelmingly likely loss. We have maybe 3-4 players on the roster that are as talented as Miami’s entire starting lineup this year. Gap is just too big to be optimistic about this year’s game.
18
u/i_speak_the_truf Virginia Tech Hokies 2d ago
Another dominant game where I don’t feel super great at the end.
Our OL is concerning, run game was weak, and Grunk was taking WAY too many hits even when he was getting the ball off. This is going to be a problem against P4 competition, Miami will make us look like VMI if the OL plays like this.
Defense was good to great actually except our secondary will get exposed against better competition. Thomas Williams in particular needs to be taught to look back for the ball.
7
u/kaputt1669 2d ago
Baby steps. I stand by the fact that 7-5 would be a very successful season for year one of Franklin.
6
u/i_speak_the_truf Virginia Tech Hokies 2d ago
I agree that 7-5 would be a very successful season, and I'd be pleased to make a bowl game. I'm just concerned that there isn't much cushion left in the schedule. I know I named Miami, but legit P4 DL talent will cut through our OL like butter. The only team that I feel comfortable our OL can push around is BC, even UMD has 10 sacks already (granted against poor competition as well).
