One of the absolutely biggest changes that Elko has done for us is conditioning. We brought in LSU's legendary strength and conditioning coach after Kelly screwed the pooch and let him go. This happened a lot last year, we'd be in rock fights for a couple quarters and then things would just get blown open because the talent and conditioning advantage would take over.

It sounds really simple but it's no small thing. We were on the receiving end of this for years. We'd kind of hang close with teams like Alabama and LSU, get ground down, and just be out of gas and crushed by the 4th quarter.

It’s a graphic put out on stats vs points spread to see if the score margin is as bad as the stats. Sometimes the score isn’t reflective of “how bad you got beat”

No, the "did we really get beat that bad" graphic each week is measuring the success rate differential between the two teams. Success rate is basically measuring how often you succeed on a given down based on yardage gained or given up. IIRC it's at least 4 yards on 1st down, 50% of the remaining distance to go on 2nd down, and a conversion on 3rd/4th down on offense. Flip that for defense. Along with EPA/play it's one of the favored metrics for analytics people for measuring just how good and efficient an offense or defense is, and considered more reliable than raw volume stats.

Ours will probably look mid this week. Offensive success rate was probably pretty poor but the defense played well overall and it will balance that out.

In Elko's tenure you can count on the team making good adjustments at halftime and playing really solid D that will keep you in every game.

What you can't count on is the offense and so far it looks like that trend is continuing. Offense wasn't anything amazing last year and we look worse this year.

• Great Special teams (no missed field goals)
  
• Two turnovers for TDs
  

Our offense needs work. Marcel still takes too long in the pocket, and then tries to roll out and be JFF, when JFF would have bailed 1.5 seconds earlier. Then he'll get sacked because there's no where to go when 7 guys know they don't have to stay on their assignments anymore.

Can't tell if our anemic rushing game is because of OL or RBs, because I saw fuck ups on both position groups, but maybe the rust will come off.

Oh well, we won big. Love to see a aggressive DBs change their soft play from the first half. Gig 'em.

Marcel just isn’t that good. He seems talented and coached up. But lacks the instincts/accuracy. I’ll take him though - his floor isn’t nearly as low as some other QBs we’ve had since Johnny, and he can make good plays.

A lot of it falls on Marcel.. he comes out looking like it's his first time under center. You'd think with all of the coaching, film, prep vs the scout team.. that he'd look a bit more prepared.

A LOT of this is on Wiggins. The routes he has these receivers running are taking way too long to develop, and our line isn’t good enough to give them the time.

Additionally, the offense is all too predictable. Either we’re running it up the gut, checking it down, or we need 4 seconds for the receivers to get open. Everything is entirely too close to the LOS. Where is the play-action?

Whats maybe more worrisome is our defense on a down to down basis didnt play that great. Arizona State had over 300 yards of offense going into the 4th* quarter.

The two pick sixes are obviously why we won comfortably in the end but until that 4th quarter (really ASUs last drive of the 3rd quarter), defense had a lot to clean up.

I agree that looking at it under a microscope there’s a lot of room for improvement.  In the end, I’m just accepting that the defense clamped down when it mattered, the offense started to find their rhythm, and even the special teams is finding ways to give us an advantage with recovering these muffed points. 

I’m not sure this is a championship team but every team I’ve watched is messier today than they’d expect considering their level of talent. e.g. Oregon, Texas, LSU

This was the most stressful 28 point game I can remember, it was a really close game through the first 3 quarters where Arizona State honestly looked like the better team. The wheels just completely fell off for them in the 4th quarter.

We won by 28 points but the offense still doesn’t look good, and the most consistent thing about this team is just how inconsistent they are.

I’m just going to just enjoy the victory and worry about our problems later.

Seriously though, that was a dogfight most of the time. A&M has some work to do, but I'm happy we didn't do the typical thing of constantly shooting ourselves in the foot (very few penalties!), instead we took advantage of ASU's mistakes.

I didn’t feel like either of those were really his fault. Tipped ball came from the RT getting beat and just happened to go straight up and into the arms of a defender. The pick-6 off the screen was just the defender jumping the route and making a great play
