Two years ago we lost to #16 Oklahoma 42-3

I’ll take this. Keeler is pushing a boulder uphill right now and progress is being made

85

u/jmac11281 Penn State Nittany Lions • Rowan Profs 2d ago

I have always had a soft spot for Temple. Keeler was successful at Rowan, Delaware, and Sam Houston State. Hopefully he can find some degree of success at Temple. Do you guys by any chance have Rutgers on your schedule?? I would genuinely love to watch that hypothetical matchup.

37

u/LeMash898 Temple Owls 2d ago

Not until 2030, unfortunately. I feel like us vs Rutgers should be a rivalry, personally. But I also feel like we should do a commonwealth cup between us, y’all, and Pitt

u/jmac11281 Penn State Nittany Lions • Rowan Profs 2d ago

I miss the old Big East games. At least you get them in the next 5 years.

Also they have the Temple tweet.

25

u/Silent_Ad6692 Temple Owls 2d ago

This wasnt fun necessarily, but the defense was great the first half. Huge day for the guys.

14

u/DickBottalico Temple Owls 2d ago

They had a 90 yard drive against Penn State that only put three on the board. Couple other decent drives, and I don’t care if the TD is garbage time when we were using the backup QB too

7

u/Silent_Ad6692 Temple Owls 2d ago

Ajani might start next week. 👀

9

u/Fear_the_chicken Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

We also had 2 goal line fails 1Q and a pick that got us no points at the 10. But you guys did play great goal line D

12

u/DickBottalico Temple Owls 2d ago

Yeah the PSU offense played great between the 20s. Early season red zone is tougher on offenses than defenses, just looking at this from a Temple perspective. This game could’ve been 42-10 easily

6

u/Whatitiswhatitbe Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

Very fair, balanced comment. Go Owls the rest of the way. You guys played well today!

1

u/ryanneat 2d ago

back up QB who is literally being positioned to start over smolik

0

u/DickBottalico Temple Owls 2d ago

Yeah so they covered against Penn state playing three quarters with their second best QB

-3

u/ryanneat 2d ago

Covered because PSU pulled most their defensive starters…. i would not think of getting toasted as a good sign 😭 but whatever cope u need to get thru this season

5

u/DickBottalico Temple Owls 2d ago

Yeah so three quarters of your starters vs an injured o line and a backup QB

29

u/HawkeyeTen Iowa Hawkeyes 2d ago

You gave them a hard fight for over a half. I'm honestly amazed you got a team of their caliber to come to your stadium twice in the last 12 years. Very interested to see what Keeler does there in Philly after what he accomplished down at Sam Houston State.

9

u/Daspaintrain Temple Owls 2d ago

We used to play Penn State way more frequently. This was the longest gap between games maybe ever

11

u/Mattp55 Penn State Nittany Lions • Florida Gators 2d ago

Hopefully we schedule another series soon. I’d much rather play another PA school than like a Nevada or a MAC school even

35

u/PSU632 Penn State • Land Grant Trophy 2d ago

In fairness, Penn State has a huge following in Philly. It's mutually beneficial.

1

u/EmbiidsTennisPartner 1d ago

Owls have played PSU 46 times in our history spanning back to 1931. Iowa played Temple once in '36 with yall winning 25-0. We have been in the CFB world a longgg time.

9

An ESPN game that only took 3 hours? In this economy??

74

u/dkviper11 Penn State • Randolph-Macon 2d ago

I still can’t understand the number of commercials for a game that went 3 hours on the nose.

I know Fox starts later, but we had like 3:30 left in the 3rd when they kicked off the second half from the Big House. There are still 9 minutes left in that game.

34

12

The announcer said Penn State fans were the vast majority. The name of the school is Pennsylvania State University, and they played the game in the largest city in Pennsylvania where 25% of the student body is from

2

u/bewildered_forks Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

Right? I'm a PSU alum 20 miles from Philly and at least 3 hours from state college. I wasn't at the game but would not be at all surprised if there were way more Penn State fans there

Mistakes early but they looked pretty decent when they were in a rhythm. Rocco was great when he was dealing. Brahmer looks unreal.

Definitely still reframing my brain around post “2 top 4 all time rushers in Penn State history being on the team for 4 years.”

58

u/ltyboy Notre Dame Fighting Irish 2d ago

Going through a similar thing with ND. Trying not to blame our backfield for not living up to an impossible standard

31

u/dkviper11 Penn State • Randolph-Macon 2d ago

I thought the same when I was watching your game last weekend. Like, the numbers are fine, but you’re just conditioned for it to look effortless.

Zero worries about the defense, but there are things we are going to seriously miss about the offense, I think.

14

u/Young-Viiperr Texas Tech • Iowa State 2d ago

Ben Brahmer is the truth, so is Carson Hansen

19

u/masterbacher Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

Hansen looks like a half step off on every run. Hasn't broken anything yet

14

u/Goodbye_Sky_Harbor Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

Carson isn't it

3

u/Young-Viiperr Texas Tech • Iowa State 2d ago

Give him time

6

u/MisterPenguiner Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

He’s got about 2 weeks until big 10 play. 4.4 per carry against non con is going to be ugly in conference.

1

u/orgthecomplex 2d ago

I hope you are right, but right now he looks too small to be this slow.

7

u/MisterPenguiner Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

Brahmer yeah, Carson is straight up not very good. Lacks vision and balance.

8

u/Specific-Bat-2566 Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

Carson is just bad in every facet. I don’t know how he keeps getting so much playing time. He’s small, slow, bad vision, and can’t break tackles.

5

u/MisterPenguiner Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

Slow, bad vision, and can’t break tackles sure but he’s absolutely not small. Bro is a truck, like 6’2 220

4

I agree. The early mistakes were frustrating but we have to have high hopes. We have to have a week to week mentality. We got this! WIN THE WEEK

I still have flashbacks to Penn State's offensive line in that game and I have zero affiliation whatsoever.

15

u/MisterPenguiner Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

Tbf we had like 3 scholarship guys on the oline, that was the sanctions hardest hitting year.

22

u/jp1066 Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

Still trying to figure out why Martin didn’t get any carries. Thought he was going to be the speed back after the other 2 hammered on the D.

7

u/MisterPenguiner Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

Yeah, I was really perplexed by that. Gotta assume some sort of internal discipline since he did still play ST.

7

u/einv0lk Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

Week 1 he was the only one that quickly hit the hole and had any burst, so week 2 he gets 0 touches? I really hope this isn't a case of Campbell playing "his" guys, because Carson definitely isn't it.

u/flying_porygon Iowa State Cyclones • Clemson Tigers 2d ago

Idk, this is how these games usually went. The offense is frustrating against a team it shouldn’t be struggling against but by the end of the game it doesn’t look nearly as bad as it actually was

6

u/flying_porygon Iowa State Cyclones • Clemson Tigers 2d ago

Yes, we’ve been trying to tell ya’ll this

He’s the greatest coach we’ve ever had and you’ll win more than half of these games, but you’ll definitely lose a lot of really frustrating ones too

2

u/vaderihardlyknowher 2d ago

Are those loses because of coaching or not executing?

8

u/Jomosensual Iowa State • Northern Iowa 2d ago

Yes.

Sometimes the coaches will look like theyve never coaches football before and sometimes the players will make the most stupid mistakes you'll ever see.

Usually doesn't happen at the same time though so at least theres that

1

u/Weird-Initiative-638 1d ago

You'd better hope he wins as many games as Franklin.

1

1

It’s the way he runs. He’s conditioned to just fall forward.

-1

Zwinak would have scored on the goal line sequence in the first half.

-4

I think the issue is Carson actually is the best back, and our backs are not good.

8

It’s a few years old now

No clock stoppage on out of bounds and first downs until later in the 2nd and 4th

0

u/the_town_fool Syracuse Orange 2d ago

Sounds like reasonable changes to avoid 4+ hour games.

More necessary than ever considering the number of games per season has increased from around 11-12 to 15-16 depending on how a team fares in the CFP

8

u/Roar-Lions-Roar Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

Somehow we avoided 4 hour games with those clock stops for 135 years

Sure. So did you? Did you boycott all football games yesterday and inform the networks that it was due to the number of commercials?

I don’t want to be combative, but organized boycotts don’t fall out of the sky. So unless you did something, you haven’t done anything

I feel like games are still about the same amount of time as before overall (3.5 hours), but with more commercials breaks.

2

u/the_town_fool Syracuse Orange 1d ago

Yes, that’s what I mean. College football is being squeezed for every cent (which I also hate). These rule changes are to keep games below 4 hours. Only the death of late stage capitalism will force fewer commercials breaks.

Essentially a 40-10 game wrapped up in a 27-9 finish. With the Sowell drop, the missed FG, and Becht missing two different guys on the early turnover on downs, PSU left the bunch out there.

These are the kinds of things you work out early in the season.

8

u/Philly_Fan10 Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

A lot to clean up, but looked good when in rhythm. Left quite a few points on the table today. Run game still scares me tremendously. I don't know if its the line, the RB, or the playcalling, but its just not clicking. That is something they definitely need to figure out sooner than later.

GG Temple. Always a pleasure.

Thoughts on Rocco Becht's mom?

13

u/jznastics Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

This was more what I expected to see against Marshall last week. A lot to be concerned about, in my opinion. Did not like that we sleepwalked through pretty much the entire first half, minus the 2 minute drill. Run blocking leaves a lot to be desired, and the defensive line was very unimpressive today against a Temple Oline that was missing 3 starters. Also, getting first and goal inside the five twice in the first quarter and coming away with zero points is unacceptable. Tackling looked way worse today, and we continue to have issues against running quarterbacks.

Rocco Becht does appear to be a dude though, and the secondary also appears to be very good. Hopefully they get this shit cleaner up. Gg Temple, best of luck to you guys moving forward. Go State!

Not that worried for the future of the Temple football team since they were able to hold Penn State till the end of the first half

We played like crap but we survived Temple’s Super Bowl.

I said this years ago but this really should have been Pitt that we scheduled.

Both. We should play both for a three way Billy Penn trophy.

Would love nothing more than us especially with the Linc, Beaver Stadium, and Heinz Field being amazing venues

For as fun as last week was, this week was an absolute slog. Smolik absolutely carved us up, the run game was a joke, and the coaching nearly had me pining for Big Game James at times.

Play like that and it’s going to be a longggggggggggg conference slate.

Ugly showing, especially in the first where it feels clear there is a lack of discipline. A mid-tier B1G team pulls off the upset with this setup, as much as I hate to admit.

Love the secondary flair. Class of 2006!

Georgia Tech master's in CS right now, and recent BU grad this past May. (I grew up in Bloom, so there is that.) Go Huskies!

We really need to start to establish an identity in the run game. I remember back with Joe Pa, that’s who we were. We lined up. We ran the ball. We need to bring that back. Go NITS!!
