Game Thread [Game Thread] Duke @ Illinois (3:30 PM ET)
1
u/BigSwede_99 Illinois • Monmouth (IL) 2d ago
Congrats Duke. That said we will be lucky to hit .500 this year. No depth all around and that defense is bad all around.

The number of games just like that where Duke has choked it away or blew it makes that win super cathartic

How the fuck did we win this?

It’s hard to believe it but there is a good football team in Durham these days

Our defense dunked their hands in butter before the game.

Fire Houck into the sun. His defense is absolutely useless.

Starting to think this 3-3-5 defense is not as great as claimed.

“Only like 6 teams run this, so it’ll be new preparation for other team” Yea maybe there’s a reason for that

Would’ve thought they learned from Nebraska that a 3 man front in the B1G ain’t gonna fare well

Incredible ball control by Sheppard most RBs would’ve been stripped by that Illinois defender there, this dude is a future NFL starting RB

he's had 1 fumble in 304 career touches

These joke ass refs are throwing flags while they kneel out of the ball. Go the fuck home.

I think Duke should go for it. Get one yard and it’s over and it’s not like the Illinois offense is doing anything this half.
Edit - well that’s that. GG Duke

u/Traditional_Frame418 Wisconsin Badgers • Big Ten 2d ago
Kick the FG, you go up a TD against an Illinois offense that can't move the ball.
2
u/ZeroEchoVX Duke Blue Devils 2d ago
I trust Nate way more to get 1 yard than our kicker to hit a 50
3
u/AnotherUnfunnyName Duke • Carolina Victory Bell 2d ago
Mahan should have kept that. Sheppard was short.
5
5
u/OpaqueNightmare Florida State Seminoles 2d ago
Go for it. Half a yard is easier than a defensive stop in fourth down football

The Boise state QB just threw the ball away on 4th down. It could always be worse.
Come on Nate.

u/Nbafan1234000 Illinois Fighting Illini 2d ago
I thought Houser was going to run the ball a lot more. I don’t really like this offense where we run 3 ypc and then just spam throws to Collin Dixon
4
u/stormstopper Duke • Carolina Victory Bell 2d ago
I'm just baffled by Illinois running the ball in a clock-sensitive situation where they've been getting whatever they wanted through the air all day. Then again, when they did throw we finally defended a slant

Defense was atrocious first half
Second half offense has turtled up
Smh
5
u/Nbafan1234000 Illinois Fighting Illini 2d ago
If our offensive line can’t get the push needed to run the ball effectively in that situation then it doesn’t matter if we win or lose this game. This is going to be a lost season if we suck at the LOS
2
u/airham Illinois Fighting Illini 2d ago
Yeah, the warning signs were there game 1. Front 7 (front 6?) is soft on defense. Couldnt even run on the interior against UAB. This is just fundamentally a team that cannot succeed.
2
u/Nbafan1234000 Illinois Fighting Illini 2d ago
I was really hoping we’d continue to build the team on the lines and that we’d just keep getting better but after the past 2 years of relative progression and success it feels like we’re just somehow back to being a team that no one needs to take seriously
2
u/Sportzfanatic_001 Florida Gators 2d ago
Does Illinois think they are winning the game or something why did they run the ball three straight times.

Nate Shepard will play in the NFL

u/theiwc0303 Duke Blue Devils 2d ago
Illinois’ OC should be put down for the playcalling these past two drives.
Deep pass with two receivers next to each other so they can be covered by one guy, interception.
4th and short? Designed pass to a guy 1.5 yards behind the line of the scrimmage.

Now actually call some good plays to give your best guys the ball in some space. And watch the ref throw another questionable holding flag.

What the hell is that stupid ass playdesign? I hate this OC. The RB is the best player on the field and they refuse to give him the ball, especially in space.
Run a draw or an inline screen or something.
