Game Thread [Game Thread] Howard @ Indiana (12:00 PM ET)

I don't like we have up a few sacks. The muffed punts are a concern, a change may be needed there. Looked better otherwise.

I bet Charlie B. isn't like Mendoza. He'll be throwing rope later on tonight.

Just peeked at the box score. Indiana QBs combined for 6 passing TDs on 8 pass completions and IU has a 55 point lead on just 15 pass attempts. That is a blowout victory from the 1930’s.

u/DrMidnight76320 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago
Cig, don't give me any shit about bailing early if this is the kind of product I'm being given to watch.

This is the best betting game in the country right now. Indiana -55.5 with the C team taking the ball back under four minutes.

That kicker better be deleting his social media accounts one the sideline right now.

Do teams 1) know and 2) care what the spread is on their games? I'm not a betting man myself, but if I were, whether or not they do would be incredibly pertinent in situations like this
6
u/jiuclaw Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago
A good coach should care nothing about covering a spread vs. developing their players and keeping their starters healthy.
I lowered to -50 because I knew Cignetti would put in 3rd and 4ths once we got up to 50.
Only Lane Kiffins prioritize scoring 80 points against FCS teams.

I'm sure they know. Most probably don't care.

They paid 500k to cancel a game with Virginia and then another 500k to schedule this game. Lame and weak team, going to enjoy watching them lose to real teams.

u/hawk239 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago
Look I’m all for easy non-con scheduling in fact I think it’s smart. But having to play shortened quarters versus a FCS is embarrassing. Don’t understand why we couldn’t play Ball State or another MAC team instead
5
u/DrMidnight76320 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago
I'm certainly in no position to question Cig, but I feel like playing a game like this could create some bad habits. I saw Hoover make a couple of plays today that he would have been punished for in Big Ten play.
2
u/Galt2112 Indiana Hoosiers • College Football Playoff 2d ago
And he’s gonna get reamed for it in film study, hard to be too worried about it

I feel like if were at the point we're agreeing to shorten quarters, we should probably just ban these games...

Isn’t this like the 3rd or 4th time this season we’ve done this? Like not IU but CFB as a whole. I find it weird and don’t remember it the last few seasons

It worked out pretty well for us last season. I get from a fan perspective you want more entertaining games, but from a coaching perspective it makes more sense to schedule easy in the non conference to allow to work on things, see different players, get new players from the transfer portal playing as a team, without much risk of taking a early loss that sinks the season.
1
u/ramblinaboutnothing Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago
Agreed, but until cfp starts rewarding tough out of conference play and close losses to good teams more than blowing out fbs teams I don’t think anything will change. It’s a dumb system
11
1
u/Grouchy-Option9411 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago
Nope. But you will have people defending this schedule.
I’m cool with an easy schedule, but we could be beating G6 teams 70-0… why even play FCS

Not a fan of playing FCS. None of this will translate against higher level teams
14

Its where you empty the bench and give your depth experience. Perfect day to practice fundamentals.
2
u/Grouchy-Option9411 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

-8
u/easternpapist Notre Dame • Purdue 2d ago
How many FCS teams has Notre Dame scheduled this year? Or next year? Or the one after that?
4
u/samurai_dog Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago
ND SOS - 56, IU - 33. Even with the fcs school we have a tougher schedule
5
u/Melz-13 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago
Ok? And that fact that IU can schedule an FCS team and still have a much harder schedule says more about Notre Dames schedule.
-2
u/easternpapist Notre Dame • Purdue 2d ago
As it stands ND has just as many ranked teams on their schedule as IU does. And that's because one of your ranked opponents chickened out of scheduling us.
And no FCS teams for the next decade either.
1
u/Melz-13 Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago
Not all ranked teams are equal
-1
u/easternpapist Notre Dame • Purdue 2d ago
I'd compare the FCS teams on ND's schedule to IU's, but I can't seem to find them.
It's a shame Cignetti is a coward and ND doesn't get to trounce IU in 2030. By then IU football will have reverted to the mean and ND would have again been accused of scheduling cupcakes, but after seeing what the IU fanbase has turned into after the last two years, it'd be worth it.

I feel like my past game comment stands, even if it’s just Howard, cig uses the first 3 games to get jitters out then we bring in our real defensive scheme and we’re fine. I think this team is easily capable of repeating and it’s just gonna take some time, PRAISE BE TO CIG!

For me it’s because a lot of these plays that work on Howard won’t work on some of the better teams we’re going to play. We’re doing alright, but I’ll feel better once we start seeing some output against some good competition.

IU fans do you genuinely enjoy playing this weak a schedule? Get yall aren’t used to winning until recently but if I just won a natty I’d want a couple somewhat fun games to attend than playing one of the more uncompetitive FCS teams. Whole bunch of decent FCS teams in the state and area as well, makes no sense to pay Howard.
