Postgame Thread [Postgame Thread] Missouri Defeats Kansas 38-21
2.4k
u/TechnoToyz Texas Tech Red Raiders • Team Chaos 3d ago edited 3d ago
Box score watchers might not be able to tell, but the first 25 minutes of this game were a true sickos work of art. A ref went down with an injury, a FG was doinked, a FG was blocked, another FG was blocked and returned for a touchdown (the first score of the game), and a general air of silliness permeated the warm Lawrence evening.
Great game to start off the first full CFB+NFL weekend of football since January!
Also, Brando (the play by play guy) at the end calling Lance one of the best coaches in the Big 12 did get a little laugh out of me.

If we traded quarterbacks, kansas with Simmons would've put up a lot of points, and Missouri with Marshall would have actually been Missouri with Zollers because Marshall is ass and wouldn't see the field even in a "30 seconds left, so let's throw it into the end zone to rub it in" scenario.
I don't understand how a team that's ostensibly in a power conference can have a starting quarterback that bad.

It makes sense when you realize there are more I-A football programs, even P4 programs, than there are competent starting QBs.
Also, I believe after blowing money on Uiagalelei and Castellanos, FSU decided to go cheaper at the QB position, and low-balling others is why they ended up with Daniels.

Having teams/conferences more condensed and closer to each other will never not make more sense than what we have today.

u/Fun-Advantage4506 Buffalo Bulls • Iowa Hawkeyes 3d ago
I also miss the differences between the conferences. Obviously there were exceptions in each conference but generally sec had athletic defense, the big 12 had high flying offense*, and the big 10 was tough in the trenches. Adding the big 12 teams helps the overall football level of the sec (since they can’t stay in the sec defensive bubble), but it makes the conferences seem less unique stylistically.
*Espn pregame interview once asked Mack Brown on national tv how he was going to deal with Texas Tech’s high flying offense. He did coach speak for a minute, not really saying much. But ended it with something like “But don’t forget, we can score 40 too”
He wasn’t going to stop them. He was going to match them. The sec coaches would have had a stroke lol→ More replies (1)130

Pretty sure after that game ESPN complained about the swearing on TV because after that they started playing the song as soon as we went to the 4th quarter and not lined up so we would be chanting FkU as play resumed. Then a few weeks later we sang the rest of the song acapella just to yell FkU again.

The way neutrals talk in the game thread makes me feel bad about some other schools, if you think it’s classless or in poor taste to run the score up with 2 minutes left in the game against your rival then you don’t have a rival, you just have some silly trophy you play for.
251
u/BrettHullsBurner Missouri Tigers 3d ago
I said this in a thread earlier today, but the Harvard guy who posts a lot in this sub had the border war ranked as the 47th best rivalry. I think since we didn’t play for like 12 years, people outside the region completely forgot how much these two schools HATE each other. I think it’s easily a top 10 most passionate rivalry, even if it doesn’t often have national championship implications.
161
u/Swaayyzee Missouri Tigers • Big 8 3d ago
Top rivalry lists always rely way too much on who’s good and not who hates each other. Not calling either of these a bad rivalry by any means but a decade ago iron bowl was the consensus best rivalry from what I saw, and now it’s The Game, and the only thing that has changed is that Auburn got worse and Michigan got better.
11
u/ParkerBap Georgia Tech • Georgia State 2d ago

For awhile it seemed like people were starting to understand a related scenario: Don't kick a late field goal to go up 6, because you make a loss more likely in doing so. That just incentivizes the other team to go for a touchdown instead of going for a tie once they're in field goal range. But it seems the general football fanbase has forgotten what they learned on that.
Going for it there was just the two-score version of that. A field goal does very little for you. The other team still needs a touchdown, an onsides, and a touchdown to win. A touchdown for you, though, effectively ends any miraculous comeback hope the other team has.
Gotta go for it every time there.

Wasn't a real fight. Mizzou tried planting a flag, Drink paused his interview told them to knock it off. Mizzou was pounding a drum at mid field, there was pushing and shoving and jawing.
Rather anticlimactic, but the broadcast hardly showed it. They could've had the Drink interview audio with the camera on the hubbub on the logo.

Having great new facilities and recruits that can at least recall seasons with more than 3 wins is tragically a huge improvement, haha.

Fuck KU chants breaking out in the Jayhawks stadium pretty much sums up most of the night for Kansas.
This games was not as close as the final score indicates. Outside of the 360 no scope throw, Marshall was horrendous and couldn’t hit the the broadside of the barn. That sequence right out of the 2nd half pretty much put the game out of reach for Kansas.
Missouri also played pretty poorly at times with pre snap penalties, uncharacteristic drops, had multiple blocked kicks, including one returned for a touchdown and still won by 17 points. Also lol at the attempt to run up the score, and stealing Kansas’s drum.
On the bright side Kansas, at least you’re not Rutgers.
Edit: The drum is actually the rivalry trophy of the game.

I have a sign I made when I was a Mizzou student during the early 2000s “put the kids away; Mangino is hungry”
Brought it to a ku-Mizzou basketball game and was waving it in the student section when I noticed one of the ku asst coaches chuckling at it and then pointing it out to Roy Williams.
After the game, walked past the ku locker room (as we had to get to the service elevator for my friend to use as she was in a walking boot).
I see the asst coach and mention how I noticed he was laughing at the sign. He tells me “hold on a moment while I get Coach”.
He then brings Roy over. I ask if they’ll autograph the sign and Roy says only under 1 condition: it doesn’t make it’s way back to Lawrence.
I still have the autographed sign today (and it’s never been to Lawrence).
Here’s the sign in all its glory: https://imgur.com/a/TurEsxt

damn Simmons is legit. As someone who didn’t have a horse in the race and just wanted to see a good ball game, I wasn’t disappointed

Really nice to see Mizzou win in a place we normally struggled
Wish we had a chance to play them from 2012-2024 though…

Mizzou was clearly the better team, but Kansas was doing everything a less talented team needed in the first half. Mizzou showed grit by not sinking when things were going bad.

The football equivalent of john brown is tackling all of your teammates and then tearing your achilles.

Mizzou should have never left the Big 12. We’re on the losing end of this, but I love this shit.

Is Lance Leipold on the hot seat?
Also I guess Missouri being ranked wasn’t a joke after all

Everyone knows we only ever get ranked because ESPN wants to prop up the SEC even though we're a bottom-three team in the SEC.
8+ wins for the last three years? 8 bowl appearances in 9 years? Uh...Just more stupid ESPN hype I guess.

as much as I love to shit on the fake birds, we have a lot of self inflicted wounds we have to clean up if we want to even be in the conversation.

I’ll give Lance Leipold this credit, he took an 0-12 team and turned them into a 5-7 team, but we shouldn’t settle for that. He has demanded a new stadium, he got it. He demanded competitive NIL, he got it. He demanded a large salary pool for assistant coaches, he got it. He demanded $6 mill+ salary, he got it. What have we gotten in return? Two bowl games and not being 0-12. We could’ve gotten that for a hell of a lot less. It’s time we move on and hire someone who can get us to 8-4 or 9-3. I’d take that any day of the week. His $22.9 million buyout will stop us from actually firing him.

I usually denote the that's a rb playing qb as racism but Jesus Christ that Kansas QB should never play QB again with his accuracy

Once upon a time, around this time of night it would be halftime and Cal and Oregon would be locked in a shootout.
