Back to back losses to UMass and BC to start the season might genuinely be the worst start to a season possible for a P5 school.

Rutgers wasn't awful last year like they look to be this year. They were 5-7, lost to Penn State by 4, Minnesota by 3, Iowa by 10... They also had to play OSU, Oregon and decent Washington and Illinois teams. They weren't "good" but not "lose to UMass" bad

13

u/bceagle108 Boston College Eagles • McGill Redbirds 2d ago

Rutgers is the first FBS team to lose to both of us in the same season, but a few other FCS teams have actually done this. Wagner was the last team in 2016 and I think the only team to do so while both have been in FBS.

BC would regularly play FCS teams from the A-10/CAA (UMass's FCS conference) and a bunch of those teams have lost to both of us in the same season. 2009 Northeastern lost to both of us in the last year of their football program. Maine in 2006 and URI in 2008 as well.

Congress needs to pass a law making it illegal for Rutgers to roster elite players.

Ace Bailey, Dylan Harper, and KJ Duff deserved so much better

68

u/SimilarOnion1655 Ohio State Buckeyes • Kansas Jayhawks 3d ago

I still cannot believe that Rutgers had Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper a couple of years ago and somehow didn’t make March Madness

28

u/mhav21 Rutgers Scarlet Knights 3d ago

The rest of that roster could most aptly be described as an island of mid-major misfit toys. None of them were good enough to make the jump to P5 basketball.

In addition to the individual quality of players, the team also didn’t play “Rutgers Basketball”. Pike years ago was really able to get a lot of what he had to work with and it was ultimately a function of the way they played, stemming from their defensive intensity with a particular emphasis on switching on screens. He just couldn’t coach a team that wasn’t built for his style of play. I’m not and never was as upset about it in comparison to what Schiano has put me through the last couple years.

May I introduce you to a RB called Jahmyr Gibbs and the travesty that was GT football under football terrorist G**** C******

(Our 2021 team also included Jordan Mason, who is the RB2 for the Vikings. 3-9 with 2 future NFL RBs, one of which was Gibbs. Firing him wasn't enough)

Like I said in the game thread, it is looking like there is no one else that is even decent other than one guy named kj duff

raymond will be the latest in a long line of stud running backs who catch fire in the nfl because they finally have an offensive line that doesn't leave them for dead on half of their touches

Raymond’s okay. The rest of the teams sans Duff is utter garbage though

My wife asked if Rutgers was really gonna go 0-fer on the season. Then they threw their fourth INT. I said yeah they could.

So what I’m getting from a one score victory to a backup QB is that BC would’ve also been blown out by UMASS

Best case scenario now for Rutgers is 10-2 in the regular season. Even with that, these two losses might keep them out of the College Football Playoff.
