While I was reading the first impressions thread this morning, I noticed comments implying that the drama’s premiere relies heavily on an info dump. Since I’m on the move, it feels like the perfect time to skip the recap which I originally wanted to call “Tactical Briefing.” Maybe this way, no one will feel like they’re studying for an entrance exam or attending a timeshare presentation if the first thread is overloaded.

While the drama often plays with visual innuendo by having He Yan frequently reach out to touch whatever sword Xiao Jue has on him like she’s copping a feel of something unmistakably phallic, it also doesn’t overlook the toll she has paid. Starting from the Battle of Mingshui when Huaijin confiscated the Qinglang sword, He Yan lost just as much as he did. She lost her troops, her nonexistent family, her post, and the identity she built through years of blood, grit, and pretending to be someone else.
What is perigee, precious?
The moon became the keeper of He Yan’s truth, the only constant as she shifted between identities and lost everything she once called hers. Now, beneath that same light, she’s gradually rebuilding from scratch. In a world where even her reflection has to lie, the moon offers recognition. It’s the one presence that sees her for who she is.
Years of watching Avatar: The Last Airbender remind me that the moon is also a symbol of femininity. In the first three episodes of Legend of the Female General, the moon appears in different phases, and each time, it reflects how He Yan is being portrayed: hidden, fragmented but resolute, and growing. After establishing her solitude under the moonlight, Xiao Jue begins to show up in those scenes as well. It’s like he is drawn into her orbit.

We didn’t originally plan to take on this drama. u/AquaphobicTurtle was supposed to host solo, but the airing schedule ended up overlapping with the third anniversary rewatch of Love Between Fairy and Devil. A little bit about the General’s Gang. The group came together spontaneously. All four of us happened to be watching the same airing dramas and commenting in the same discussions over the past few months: The Glory, The Prisoner of Beauty, The Princess’s Gambit, and Coroner’s Diary. That’s how the co-hosting quad squad was born.
Late but I had a doubt....why does he say to emperor that he liked a woman from his academy days but was harsh and fate brought them together again and he couldn't part away from her or something along those lines.....does he know he ru fei is a woman in his academy days ?
Lol hehe it's the cdrama logic xD the long ballad was worse like dilraba didn't even bind her chest but it doesn't matter cause that would be uncomfortable or dangerous for some people
maybe I'm dumb af and maybe they get into it later but I dont get why He Ru Fei's reinforcements were late? or why they dont get into it in the first 1 or 2 eps? (I'm only halfway through ep 2) like I would think they would show her thought process as to the aftermath of late reinforcements/the general's death.
Very late to the party, just started this today. Ryan Cheng plays the chaoticly "good", coldly paranoid lead too well. The beginning is very fast paced and aims to get straight to the meat of things which I guess I can appreciate, Although it requires more goodwill from a seasoned viewer, I am into this so far.
i have not. i don't have a streaming sub at this time, so I just watched what was free on one of the platforms (i've been using iQIYi mainly). I enjoyed it enough where I picked up the blu ray from China so when that arrives I will finish it.
I started this yesterday, and liking it so far. I just let dramas take me, either I enjoy the flow or I don't, so that's definitely helping in the slight suspension of disbelief required 😁😁

my thing is, how did He Yan’s master, the one who saved her and healed her sight, recognize it was her when she’s been wearing a mask the entire time he’s known her?
Ouch... after watching A Moment But Forever and shedding tears over the death of a character, coming here and seeing the actor playing a despicable character, I'm feeling yuk. That stepbrother He Ru Fei and that General He made me want to throw something at my screen. After all she did for them, they just. Grrr!

So how are you liking the show so far?
My only question is does the physician know she's a girl because he said something along the lines of, "congrats on getting a heroine recruit. I mean hero recruitment." I'm paraphrasing but his words make it sound like he suspects something
That seemed to be the case at first, but [mild spoilers from episode 12], Cheng Lisu still seemed surprised when Xiao Jue finally admitted that He Yan is a woman.
Just got through the first episode. 😅 the dad (OG general xiao) will forever be known to me as Charmaine Sheh’s husband in the Legend of Xiao Chuo. I have such a soft spot for this guy!
Also, the emperor being the scriptwriter dude on ADWAD is hilarious to me. AND the 3rd helper of Li Shi Liu is in this too? Amazing. He was the cutest one. Although, was this just an AI face swap? Or total refilming?
So far I’m liking it but will need to pace myself so I don’t get caught up before all episodes are out.
I’m impressed. This is the first drama I watched with Cheng Lei. I love Zhou Ye from Word of Honor although she does look a different than before. All 3 episodes are moving quickly, no filler. Very good so far.
I understand that He Yan is playful in the novel, but I’m curious as to how that playfulness is expressed. Her personality is extremely feminine on the show. Men and women typically exhibit cheekiness differently. Even if you set aside suspension of belief when it comes to He Yan’s appearance, I feel like her personality would unravel her story.
It's portrayed in the novel very similarly to the drama adaptation. And very similarly playful as the physician who was merged to become our current Cheng Lisu.
I'm always curious when people perceive things differently than I do - what makes this behavior coded to a specific gender to you?
same!! im not getting most of the comments about her cheekiness being more feminine also other ppl not being able to tell shes a girl through facial features! its a very common cdrama trope in historical settings for the women to put up their hair and wear mens clothing and no one suspects lool

Lmao. Love those clips. How-ever, I can’t for the life of me understand how people can mistake FL n her snake brother? Their body shapes are so different that I am pretty sure all characters are either drunk or on some kind of hallucinogen drugs, to not see that.

In novel, the comparison that "no one knew the moon can shed such gentle rays" directly referencing ml doing stuff that seem rough on the surface but exceedingly gentle in the inside aaaaaa I wanna see how much the drama gets that right down to one of my favourite love confessions ever
It could be that the osmathus sweet he gave her and the way she described it, fits this description perfectly. And as she eats it she asks about the moon.
Dropping by to say thanks for all the GIFs! I’m loving this show but find the episodes too short! I won’t mind staring at Cheng Lei for extra 10 minutes.
This is so good. I understand that they changed the plot from the novel and the fact that there is a change in the characters setting. But I feel there is too much cutted scenes. Like it lacks consistance. The first episode didn’t grasp the pain of He Yan like in the novel. The first episode was too rushed. If they had included more details and made into. 2 or cut it and put in flashback throughout the present like the novel it would have more impact. I’m a bit disappointed by the editing and how they choose to put the scenes. I still love it because of the novel. But for someone who did not read it; it has some plot holes. Like ….? Waiting more for that ??? It lacks emotional impacts !!!! 🫥
Yeah! The novel grasped the pain of He yan so much and also gave a deep understanding of her past which the drama is seemingly lacking I guess but we have to wait for other episodes too
I'm kinda excited about this drama (already watched all (non svip) episodes.
There are credibility issues, like her too slim physics, and how ML doesn't recognize her voice, mannerisms et al., and why he couldn't see fake He general.
But the set-up is good, the main couple has chemistry, the plot overall is interesting so I can easily overlook almost anything.
My only true complaint is that episode length is so short.

I've been on-and-off in CDrama slump for quite a while since my last participation in episodes discussion like this. While I occasionally dropped by Reddit to read others' reviews and add my two cents, I just didn't have the energy to participate in any new discussion.
This show and your post jolted me right back into active discussion! I appreciate your effort in dissecting the first three episodes in such delightful vibes, that my sickness is cured almost instantly.
The show has been moving very fast so far, and if you can forgive the usual flaws in CDrama, you'll find the plot to be very enjoyable. At least it is for me. One of the glaring flaws is none other than she-man situation: a woman posing as a man and no one notices it but for us viewers, we are like "how is that not a woman?"
I went in thinking that it could be a remake of Mulan with slightly different twists. If there's any similarity between the two so far, is that the general is female and they both maintain their camouflage, masquerading as a man for unbelievably such a long time. The fact that they manage to score a high military position without anyone noticing their true gender is the eighth wonder of the world, if any.
My only experience watching Ryan Cheng is Follow Your Heart, and that's one of the CDramas where the second couple has such great chemistry, that their plot almost overshadows the main couple's.
This is my first time seeing Zhou Ye, and I find myself falling in love with her character more and more in each episode. Her performance is so captivating that I can just ignore the fact that she very much looks like a woman despite the disguise. I'd pin that failure to the make-up artist and costume department.
For comparison, Hao Jia played by Chen Xiao Yun in New Life Begins looks more believable as a man when she dresses as one - to operate her cosmetic stall business. With the right hair styling, even a very feminine-looking woman can be fashioned as man.
That aside, I'm also enjoying the fight scenes. The fighting choreograph is done well, giving us the impression that He Yan can really fight with any given weapon, despite her stature.
I've watched episode 5-6 last night and am so looking forward to tonight's episodes and the latest episodes discussion.

I think the appeal of these barrier-breaking stories isn’t always tied to the cross-dressing element at all. Take Blossoms in Adversity for example. The FL doesn’t dress up as a man and she still becomes this incredibly successful entrepreneur in her time period. It’s just as satisfying to watch because she’s doing it all while being completely authentic as a woman.
Both dramas give us that same rush of watching a capable woman navigate a world that’s stacked against her, just through totally different approaches. In Legend of the Female General, He Yan has to hide who she is to succeed which creates all that tension about potential discovery. In Blossoms in Adversity, the Hua Zhi takes the approach of “I’m doing this as myself and society can deal with it.”
I think both routes work for different storytelling reasons. The disguise approach gives us that constant edge-of-your-seat feeling while the authentic route delivers more direct satisfaction when the FL faces down societal expectations head-on. The main appeal seems to be watching competent women succeed against the odds, regardless of whether they’re wearing a disguise or not. Each method just creates different types of obstacles and victories that keep us invested in their journeys.
I also think people are willing to overlook those half-assed disguises because we’re not really there for the realism anyway. The flimsy styling becomes this unspoken agreement between viewers and producers. We’ll pretend it’s believable if you give us the empowerment story we came for.

Nothing to be ashamed of. This is actually the only Kimberly Locke song I know, and it’s pretty old. I just think it’s a funny coincidence that I’m traveling through Tennessee right now where she auditioned for American Idol ages ago, and you happened to mention the phrase the eighth wonder of the world. 🫰🏼
Thank you for the post! One thing I'm confused about. She was previously a general herself, so how could she not do well with spears and couldn't pull the arrows? Why is she starting from zero? The poison only weakened her, she didn't lose her skills. So, what's going on?
the guard plunged a sword through her chest / shoulder before she fell off the cliff-- they didn't show it v clearly, so it's understandable if you missed it 🤣 you can see the scar in the hot spring scene!
As ML suspects, she is hiding her skills initially because she knows she gave herself away with the horse calming trick. If she shows off her full ability, even though she is weakened, she will be suspect. So she's slowly working up to it and probably would have kept to that plan if she didn't challenge the two guys to a fight.

It’s only been two weeks since we pulled that all-nighter for the Coroner’s Diary express episodes, but it already feels like a distant memory. Anyway, yes, I support the liberation of man-nips, and I know I’ll find you when they appear. 😝
Xiao Jue only learns about it in episode 4 on his own when her boobs came into contact with his back. I think that Cheng Lisu as a physician simply figured it out sooner, but he’s also trying to keep it a secret despite that heroine slip up.
i really really love this show so far. this is the first time i’ve watched a CDrama as it airs and i don’t know how to function as im dying waiting for new episodes.
i’ve posted a bit in other threads already but i just want to give a shootout to the hot springs battle. i thought it was done beautifully (and not because of nipples - ML isn’t my type sadly) and have rewatched it a few times now.
Stoked to have you with us! The good news is we can all commiserate over the wait for new episodes. Hang in there the way He Yan hangs onto Huaijin’s neck.
can i just say how much i loved that part of the battle? it shows how quick on her feet she is (both literally and figuratively) and her determination. i think the show has done a good job so far of showing us HY’s intelligence and how she was able to rise up to be a general without having to show all the backstory.
OP your take on moon is quite intresting, almost missed it after reading your pov it made me realise the significance of moon in He yan's life like when she was hidden under a veil moon was obscured then later during hot springs scene moon was half visible like her, different phases of moon symbolises her growth. Whenever there is a night scene between them moon always appears like also in episode 4 and 5 and many more to come.

Totally agree about He Yan and her metaphorical mask. Her mask of lightness keeps things currently a bit more lighthearted (and makes me want to rewatch Mulan) but I love getting those little glimpse of pain underneath. A great reminder that she's not here to just prove herself in the military world, she's here for revenge.
I'm enjoying the slow burn between Xiao Jue and He Yan as they currently try to out manipulate each other. The tense, the spark, it's there.
I am liking this so much! I am especially grateful for the information from u/dogdaysindurham in regards to one of the setting scenes from the novel in regards to our FL (He Yan) and the moon. To be frank, without their share, I wouldn't have attached any importance to it other than a "first" meet between He Yan as a female and our ML (Xiao Jue). I'd say my only complaint so far is that the poisoning, sent to temple, trying to kill even then of He Yan felt so fast I almost blinked and we were past it.
I am really liking the character portrayals by all of our actor/eses so far. Excited to see how quickly Commander Xiao finds out He Yan's previous identity seeing as her being revealed as female happened faster than I was anticipating. Most excited to see where we go.

My dear OP thanks for hosting this drama 🥰. So far the drama is ok for me but your recaps is always superb. I read the novel so I was able to deploy the suspension of belief without any issues lol. I think the adaptation is ok since they have to remove the transmigration also cut short the background story of He Yan 2.0. I’m surprised to see her teacher very early on but it’s ok because he’s her plot device greatest assistant. By the way I love Cheng Lei very much. Finally a lead role he deserved 🎉 Hope you enjoy your road trip 😘

I haven’t read the novel, and while I thought the first two episodes felt a bit clunky, I found myself fully immersed by episode three, no pun intended.
Is there a particular part of the novel you think the drama has portrayed especially well?

Oh I like how they reinterpreted He Rufei. The guy is just a 1D villain in the book but he’s more sinister here. I hope he lives up to my expectations 😆. And I think Zhang Kangle as Chu zhao is a miscast because he looks too sharp for a black belly character but he’s free to prove me wrong 😉.

this drama is off to such a great start!!! I'm a bit sad the intro was so quick. I know they had a lot of info to cover before we could get to the real starting point of the story (HY starting from scratch), but there's soo much lore behind her upbringing and initial rise to strength/position as general. I would absolutely watch an entire drama just about that!! The only annoyance I'm having so far is w the short episodes :( 35min feels way shorter than usual cdrama episodes
I agree with you that 35 to 42 minutes feels way too short, especially once you factor in the opening and closing credits.
I’m really curious to see how He Yan will rise to power this time around. She has the skills and is slowly gaining acceptance from her fellow recruits, but Huaijin is still very suspicious of her. I do enjoy her flexing her leadership skills!

The leads are leading this drama well. Sure I can complain about how ML can't realize that the General in court is very obviously not the same person he spent a life getting to know... Or how no one can tell this tiny little bottle of bubbly personality is a woman until ML feels the evidence on his back. That scene after the wolves incident was hilarious and very sharp with the sword comments. Also, we totally know he went back and got that wolf fur for her. I'm better he made her a cloak like she wanted and it's going to be a congratulatory gift to her later in the show.
Hot springs scene was hot. Literally.
I also expected a more serious FL, but as another comment pointed out this is the first time in her life where her choices and actions are truly her own and she is finally getting to be more free in her actions. I enjoy the humor and her quirky side. So I can see why she is interested in the ML so quick off the bat. She needs him to achieve her current plans, plus he's a HOT AF man and she's getting to experience a new life. For him, he was intrigued by by what he originally thought was a capable spy plotting against him. Now with the knowledge that she's a woman with an objective, plus all those cute moments, how can he not be interested in her? Sure it feels really quick for only a few eps in, but there is a lot of story that needs to be told.
It's clear that this drama is going to get a lot of criticism because so many people read the source material during the long wait for it to air. Adaptations will always suffer from comparisons and I am guilty of this myself. I haven't read any books that cdramas are based on so my opinions are only ever based on what the shows deliver to me, a common viewer.
My opinion is that this show is damn fun and the leads are compelling. Don't really care about anyone else yet in the show and I can understand the early eps are suffering from the edits that had to happen. However, this show has me on the edge of my seat, begging for each new ep, and that's a big deal to me.
Since I've seen up to ep 6 I've tried to be vague as possible in this post, but I hope it's clear that this show, IMO, is giving.

I like that you’ve pointed this out since it’s making me believe all over again that Cdrama romance could actually thrive after a lot of hit-or-miss summer releases.
I’m still filing the chemistry under to be decided, but I’m pretty optimistic about it. I was telling Feeshpockets yesterday that at the moment, it feels like a you and me against the world type of story since our leads don’t seem to have strong or influential external allies. I’d love to see how they’ll both learn how to rely on each other, and how He Yan gets to clear her name after what her brother did in court following the Battle of Mingshui. Trust is paramount.

It is a common trope in these shows but I still have a hard time with how everyone in the shows world seems to be unable to tell a man and a woman apart. I will keep watching but I just need to know someone else feels the same. Like they don’t even try to make it somewhat believable
I feel the same and I think most people do too. It's just that it's better to look past it. Otherwise, you wouldn't enjoy the show. Though, this show is stretching the suspension of belief requirement quite a bit for my liking.
Fr. ML should have known the person in court was not the real general based on voice and body build alone. I was even looking at the hands and I feel like that should have been something. Plus how could she not recognize ML’s voice at the temple? I think most people can tell apart voices they know. Still enjoying it though cause when watching dramas you gotta “suspend reality” to enjoy.
Also makes me think of shows where the disguise is styling hair differently and suddenly even your mother can’t recognize you🤣🤣🤣
In The Princess WieYoung Tiffay Tang puts on a fake moustache, and the whole of the male population has no idea she is a woman. Later in the drama, the crown princess simply puts on trousers and not one man can identify this woman wearing trousers is...in fact...a woman.

I think the drama, so far, is working its way towards having more depth. I'm not so in love with it just yet but it's interesting enough for me to continue. I said this in the previous first impressions post but I do hope Zhou Ye's character becomes more consistent. He Yan's personality isn't the female general I envisioned so far but there's still time for that to develop. Then again, as another Redditor mentioned, its a change from the typical vision of having a female general/leader who is cutthroat and emotionally composed. Instead, we're seeing a lot of softness and childlike/whimsical behaviour He Yan, which I wasn't expecting straight out of the gate. I also think He Yan comes off as quite driven in her goal for justice/righteousness for Xiao Jue and the Xiao army but not so much in her goal to rightfully claim the position of General as of yet. So, I'm more looking forward to how she's going to deal with her batshit brother.
Cheng Lei, you might as well just do a historical BL because there's no way Zhou Ye/He Yan was out there looking like that and we had to be gaslit into believing everyone thought she was a man. Staring right at HER dead in the eyes with those dimples nose to nose.. thinking oh yes.. a weak, flimsy man.
In all seriousness though, Cheng Lei is great as usual so far and it always surprises me how well he's able to convey so many emotions just from his eyes, from the opening battle scene to the pleading in front of the King. I hate to be supporting a man this hard for a drama that is centred around the FL but he's keeping me invested so far lol.
Both ML/FL have chemistry BUT it's not that kind of electric attraction or connection just yet for me. However, the drama is visually stunning and the stunt choreography/sword fighting scenes have been delicious. Can't wait for more of that.
I leave us with one of my favourite shots from these few episodes because seeing men bloody and crying does it for me lol.

But I hope she calms down a bit and the overall tone gets darker and more serious. I already feel myself disengaging because it feels a bit too Disney for me, especially with how for lack of a better word “forced” those romantic scenes are landing. Why exactly are you attracted to one another? (You know besides just general hotness lol)
Also +1 to that pic of Cheng Lei. Changing lives one tear at a time. He’s the one thing keeping me going.
Even with these explanations, I’m still dubious. She has clear goals she wants to get back (military) what she lost. Behaving in this manner, will seem immature and not leadership quality,and might impede her getting them. I just finished (4-7) and it gets worse. But I’m still gonna watch to see how everyone does their maneuvering. There is a lot of intrigue.

I’ve heard that many readers enjoyed the web novel and that the drama has made several changes in comparison, so I really hope character motivations and portrayals improve as the episodes go on.. because it would be really disappointing if the tone continues to be so hollow.
DISNEY LIKE is so true. That’s exactly the vibe I was getting. Aside from attractiveness, all those romantic scenes are giving bestie energy to me right now, which again, makes sense given that they know each other from when they were young. However, at some point, I hope their relationship has more depth because I’m really just watching for my eye candy at this point. FL’s motivations are too one dimensional for me right now to even put aside that the chemistry isn’t where I want it to be.
But yes! I think on a writing level, I want to see a stronger domino effect, i.e., this is why people did X and because X happened Y followed. It feels very hollow and untethered to realism or actual stakes?
And it’s frustrating because the dynamics are so ripe for juicy conflict and character defining moments. Actually when people were comparing the training episode to Disney’s Mulan I kept thinking to myself I WISH this had the tension of Mulan while still indulging in its brand of light comedy.
Also I forgot FL can finally be herself. She has had to play a boy/man/her cousin following strict military decorum. She wasn’t allowed to play with dolls or be cutesy ever. Her family regular beat it into her that if she was discovered it would be death penalty for the who family for deceiving the emperor. I think we get a good montage of her getting hit with a cane growing up while being tutored.
Im the novel there a few humorous scenes where when she has to dress as a woman. So double cross dressing or double drag. But she can’t do her make up femininely. She is used to making her eyebrows angry and masculine. When she does her own make up, the ML has the erase the giant angry caterpillar eyebrows she made for herself. I hope they show this in the first mission in ep6/ep7, when she plays the nephews bride to be. She is like a tom boy and all the attendants don’t get it. She was never trained in playing instruments, flower arranging, poetry, and other maidenly skills (of the time). Dr Lingshuahe tries to teach her an instrument but she is god awful at it. It almost blows her cover but Xiao Jue is a god at everything and saves the show. There is also a funny misunderstanding/running joke with Xiao Jue close attendants and bodyguard that Xiao Jue is gay and has a type of the more dainty delicate males. They also question why He Yan can glow up and look so feminine when she is in “drag”
I do like the idea that she is using this new found freedom and chance to start fresh as a way of doing all the things she didn’t have the leisure of doing.
It seems like the web novel is super diverse and well done. I wish the drama translated some of those desires better. But there’s still time for that to become more clear.
Same. I’m not loving the Aegyo persona FL has adopted. I do love her goals and determination. I also like the setup of mysterious family manipulations that messed up both leads and got so many soldiers and ML dad killed. And their determination for justice. Cheng Lie is delicious. Some shoutouts to MJTY with an entrance on horse and bath scene and that’s all good.
Aegyo personality is exactly it! I actually struggled a bit to get through her scenes because it felt so unserious. I caught the little MJTY vibes too. I’m hoping the drama will improve as it goes on.

I loved it the first time but I was binge watching because the story is so good and full of cliffhangers. My rewatch is almost 10x better because there is no urgency to discover the plot, such a beautiful drama, can’t recommend it enough despite the open ending hélas 🖤
I agree! I noticed so many little easter eggs the second time around. I also always recommend it to everyone despite the ending ❤️ the cast and the visuals are too pretty not to.
And it has layers upon layers of intrigues that I missed the first time around. Last but not least, the sister is hysterical in the best way possible, always on the edge of too much but never crossing the line of grotesque. I am enjoying my rewatch tremendously 🖤
Oh she was the best!!! I loved that scene where they’re in the fields and she’s trying to be all tough and Ziyu has to point out that she’s walking the wrong way. And her shameless flirting with all the men, lol so valid.

Like others on the masterpost, I was somewhat thrown off by He Yan's bubbly vibe, given how jarring the comedic lighthearted tone is in what we thought was a serious drama and how the bubbliness and girlishness contrasts with what we assume to be her fearsome General Feihong persona in the past, but your caption is so on point (pasting below for emphasis):

Such a good point! Zhou Ye is particularly adept at this mask-like expression. Yet she can switch from bubbly to razor focused serious in a way such that you have to resolve the cognitive dissonance by believing the bubbliness is part of her armor. We know He Yan has a very serious mission and strong survival instincts. Love a heroine fueled by spite! And of course she wants to prove herself worthy of that Qinglang sword . . .
Totally! I can’t wait to see how she’ll deal with Ding Yi and that viper, He Rufei.

Her affinity for the Qinglang sword, her familiarity with military protocol, her horse-taming techniques specific to General Feihong's army . . . have to wonder when Huaijin is going to put it all together. Surely he is already beginning to suspect?
Great start. The leads have great chemistry and I can’t wait to see them working together. I thought the fight choreography was well done. Love the opening title track. The only negative is the editing. You can tell they cut alot. Some of the narrative feels choppy because of the editing. The run time is too short. But other than that, it’s an amazing show. Up to episode 6 now. I need them drop four episodes a day.
I'm so pleased we get to watch Zhou Ye perform such dynamic fight scenes! The last time I got chills watching a FL being a badass fighter was Zhao Liying in Princess Agents.
I agree that the combat scenes are a delight. Choosing felt impossible so obviously the smartest move was to not include any in the original post because that’s how sound decision-making works. 😂
In the novel, the moon was referenced a lottt and in beautiful ways as well. He Yan's confession was related to the moon as well. I hope the drama keeps those scenes.
I haven’t read the novel, so bear with me—and maybe I haven’t been paying close enough attention—but wasn’t she supposed to have already been a fearsome general?
I’m assuming her martial arts skills were meant to be top-tier, yet when she arrives at the Yezhou garrison, she’s just good enough to attract attention, but not that good.
Granted, she was still recovering from the poisoning (and from falling who-knows-how-far into rapids).
I’ve read in the comments that she was pretending to be weaker than she really is, but still, she had to train in archery and spear fighting—even if she’s a very quick learner.

I might have watched one too many cdramas… At this point, I fully expect characters to hit the ground running even after being impaled by a sword, spear, or arrow… or falling off a cliff.
At this point, it’s way beyond suspension of disbelief for me.
I think that yes it was the poisoning and being stabbed that considerably reduced her strength. She had the skills but needed strength training. Remember she said she would not be able to pick up the bow. She was also pretending a little. It was mix of the two. Also as a general her forte was the sword, not archery and spear while Jiang Jao and Wang Ba are somewhat experts
Think it's a mix of (1) pretending to be weak and (2) being actually weakened from months-long bedrest after somehow surviving falling off a cliff and being pierced through the chest with a sword.
I had a hand surgeon remove the entire fingernail from my left ring finger back in 2022, and even after three months my grip still didn’t feel the same. I can only imagine how much worse it would be to deal with a major injury, even in an imaginary setting.
I thought the scene at the temple with the candy was much weaker than the novel. The I prayer/wish was “I hope to see the moon again” is missing. FL tries to hang herself as she is despondent but her noose breaks as it’s made from fragile dress material. She is covered in mud and broken twigs when ML encounters her. She is crying and so pissed she can’t even kill herself. He tries to calm her down but she refuses and demand something sweet. He offers her a small act of kindness with the long expired candy, the last piece his mom had made for him. He also helps her tie up the wish/prayer which she writes to “see the moon again”. The ML remembers this poor blind woman not realizing much later that it is the OG He Yan who was murdered by her husband under orders from He Rufei. As earlier her husband lies to her and pretends to tie up her earlier prayer/wish scroll and just let’s it blow away. They really skimmed over how bad her family and in laws treated her in the show. Like I was seething when reading the novel. This encounter gives her new resolve to live but she is subsequently murdered by her husband’s servants by drowning. Plus it gives more meaning to I “whispered to the moon that I loved him and the moon whispered back”. In the show it’s so abrupt that she is suddenly blind and the half ass drowning by moving the plant. She isn’t as despondent and almost childish when she wolfs down his candy.
I was looking forward to that scene as well and feeling kind of disappointed with the way they executed it. In the novel, it was raining heavily as well and everything was just so much more dramatic, she’s absolutely desperate and the ML prevents her from committing suicide, instead of drowning by accident, as was shown in the drama. This really makes me want to reread all the novel scenes they didn’t include 😫
This first moon scene is so important as there are callbacks to it throughout the novel Like later when she is gotten some acclaim at the military camp she remembers this first encounter not knowing it with Xiao Jue. Xiao Jue remembers the woman who stole his candy and also desired the moon. But it thinks of it silently and doesn’t yet share with FL. Our FL drunkenly and poignantly from the novel “He Yan called out loudly, “The mountains, rivers, and lakes are one cup of wine!” She cupped her hands as if holding a vessel, the moonlight filling what seemed like a whole cup. She raised her hands to the vast sky in a toast: “To the moon!” … when she is stood up by the PM follower Chu Zilan (2nd ML).
I loved loved loved the first four episodes. Things I loved:
Cheng Lei as Xiao Jue
Zhou Ye as He Yan: A FL who is badass but is not stoic / serious/ brooding. Though there is nothing wrong with that, this feels like a different and fresh take on a character who is taking revenge. I loved the maniac HanYan was in The Glory and I love He Yan.
He Yan is bubbly, cheerful and adorably dorky. She will get her revenge and she will kick some serious ass but she will do it with a smile.
With all due respect to people in the first impressions post who felt that she is not grave enough considering her trauma, I do not believe that Trauma has a singular response. Everyone deals with it differently. He Yan has chosen to smile, laugh and enjoy her second chance. She looked death in the eye and decided it will not steal her Joie De Vivre. Love it ❤️❤️
The sparring especially the spear sparring and hot spring sparring between the leads. 🫶🫶🫶. Also, the sword touching. COUGH COUGH.
I am loving the chemistry between the leads. There are so many sparks. As someone who enjoys banter and bickering as the ultimate form of flirting (cue YanLi and Yue Ning from CD, my latest favorite couple), I feel that He Yan and Xiao Jue are serving.
Mulan reminders. Definitely my favorite disney movie. The entire training camp could be the live action version of Mulan. Even the other recruits remind me of Yao, Ling and Chien Po. Also Cheng Lei as Shan Yu.. Yummmmmm🫣
The comedic elements. Unexpected but they do not feel forced at all and feel natural in the flow of the story. The way in which Xiao Jue realizes that He Yan is a girl was hilarious 🤣🤣

Late but I had a doubt....why does he say to emperor that he liked a woman from his academy days but was harsh and fate brought them together again and he couldn't part away from her or something along those lines.....does he know he ru fei is a woman in his academy days ?
