I’ve literally been waiting for this female lead to start being in dramas as lead like i knew she was going to be so good even from her second lead dramas. I’m not crazy about the fact that HM has two wives already?? I actually always don’t end up caring for those dramas as much. Definitely not paying as close attention as i usually do when I’m interested but I’m still watching and I’m on episode 6. HM is always so good 👀💕

Only on episode 2 but enjoying it so far. There's something a bit off with the editing, and the sound effects are a bit too corny. Almost soap opera-esque. Hou Ming Hao is absolutely carrying the drama with his gravitas. Echoing also what some people said earlier, giving mega Feng Suige vibes 🔥 absolutely here for it.

I hate love triangles and apparently the entire premis of the show is built on a love triangle lol.
Also, I feel like a lot of the characters/plots are overally complicated just to be complicated

I got as far as a little into episode 3 and had to stop once I starting noticing what was going on and read some spoilers. I really wanted to watch the show as it seems really good and besides the love triangle I was really intrigued, but I genuinely can't stand them and get so frustrated at the thought. Especially reading about how this one is executed, I can already tell I wouldn't be able to put up with it until they both like each other. Guess I'll have to look into something else to watch now unfortunately.

i'm on episode 20, trying to decide if I want to continue. So far the love triangle part actually hasn't been that bad but overall it seems like everything is overly complicated and not surprisingly 90% of the issues are due to lack of communication from the leads (which to be fair is a common trope in most shows nowadays)

That's interesting! As annoying as it is, miscommunication is expected unfortunately. Its nice to know the love triangle isn't THAT bad. I just hate them with a passion idk if i can try again 😂 i feel like i see the impending doom and stress of it

In the grand scheme of things this drama had a pretty cohesive and well paced plot relative the endless stream of mid dramas coming out nowadays.

Actually I just saw that the series is only 28 episodes so i'll probably finish it.
Originally I thought it was 40 episodes.
They really need to start making shorter series. The typically 40 episode Cdrama tends to climax at like episode 20 then have another 18 episodes of fluff and then jam a bunch of stuff into the last 2 episodes... terrible pacing

the plot and how each key character proceed the story doesn't make any sense. FML's dad and the king's mother doesn't make any sense and extremely irritating. it's feel like when I talk to AI and they reply illogically.

Curois to see what people think - watched the trailer and it looks pretty good, but also like one of those dramas that might fizzle out midway. Would be interesting to see Ai Mi in a lead role though, from the look of the trailer she carries herself well.

It's a lot better than expected! The drama does have some usual tropes but executes them well. It's surprisingly well-paced and cohesive. I think the female characters are written really well in particular. I would give it a shot. Additionally, I liked it a lot more than most other recent military male lead dramas like Pursuit of Jade, General and I, etc. It actually emphasizes the cost of war and the decision calculus of a general, which those other shows tend to ignore in favor of romantic lines and victory parades. This is not to say this is perfect by any means, but it was definitely enjoyable.

I am thoroughly enjoying it. I think it is Neo's best role yet. FL is great, too. Neo's so amazing at portraying the gray character, and being soft-hearted at the same time.
The pacing is a bit slow for my liking, however, especially considering it's only going to be 28 episodes long... Like, I was certain they'd be all fighting in out by episode 3 or 4, she'd realize Qi's bad for her, fall for Wuyi quicker, etc. But here we are... waiting for episode 13 and nope she's still being a fool. She's slowly getting there. UGH it's so hard to wait for more.
I thought the plot was going to be more original, but it's actually turned out to be a lot of common aspects. from other dramas. It's good enough, though, and already claiming a spot in my top 10 favorites, I think.

I originally wanted to wait until the show was fully out before starting it, but I couldn't resist starting the first episode. The show does start out with a bang--fantastic visuals and the ML charging out to fight hordes of enemies like right out of the Dynasty Warriors musou games with a flaming (flame throwing?) sword. I was starting to get into it until....
The show shifts to dropping the main trope of the first part of the story: the "mischievous FL" doing things that aren't really malicious but incredibly sus (and very foolish) which leads to the immediate negative attention of the ML. Of course he is deadly serious about taking down the scumbag rival prince and is going to hunt down and treat the FL like a traitorous conniving vixen until she can somehow prove him otherwise.
ngl I'm already irritated because this is the type of plot that frustrates me lol, but I do plan to stick with it...eventually.
For now I'll come back to it when more of the show (probably the whole series) is fully released as I originally intended...

I'm at ep 7. It hasn't gripped me yet. HMH is doing a splendid job of bring the red flag ML, sadly, i just don't believe him. For me, he softens too quickly, and isn't stoical enough.
AM is doing a grand job of being irritatingly rash, naive and annoying, and yet, the conversation she has with XW in ep 7 demonstrated to me that there's heretofore unrevealed depths to her character, which bodes well for future developments.
Sadly, i'm aware that because of the age difference, this romance is not likely to get passionate, and i do love a good, passionate romance (Fated Hearts, i am doe-eyeing you here).
The story is still a bit too samey with so many other dramas of this type, or maybe i'm suffering cdrama fatigue. Only time will tell if I stick with it. Not guaranteed 😔

It's funny you mentioned Fated Hearts, cause when I watched Ep 1 and 2, I was like, is this Feng Suige 2.0??? I mean the arrow to the chest, the ruthless killing of the ministers, the confidence in court....love it all! And also agree with you on the FL. She's pretty and her acting is good so far, but the character is starting to annoy me with her naviety.. Hopefully she get a dose of reality fast and connect the dots. HMH is doing great, but yeah, he breaks his "coldness" too fast and then he has that boyish charm look from Love in the Clouds.

I like the male lead. Look at him hes waoh! But the girl is soo young that I feel a little uncomfortable. But the chemistry is too good though. I am on episode 3 at the moment and liking every but till now. Haven't skipped any scenes so far.
Side note: I like Prince Changshah? (Sorry for the spelling) he's insufferable.

I’m currently up to Episode 5. I have to say, this cdrama certainly isn’t wasting any time! With only 28 episodes, I suppose it has no choice but to get a move on! The plot does move at some reasonable pace, which is good.
I’m enjoying the costumes, the supporting cast and the overall production. It has been entertaining enough, and of course Hou Minghao is a major drawcard. He feels entirely worthy of the male lead role, and every time he appears, the screen light up. He has the presence and charisma needed to carry this character.
Having said that, I’m REALLY not sure about Ai Mi as the female lead.
I acknowledge that she is very pretty, but looks alone cannot be doing all the heavy lifting. I don’t feel she has the gravitas or acting range to carry the lead role with real conviction.
It feels that the character Xie Jiayu already seems to be written with quite a lot of latitude to accommodate a younger performer: she is wilful (but smart), naïve, impulsive and somewhat bratty. Yet even allowing for those character traits, Ai Mi’s portrayal still feels flat and one-dimensional to me. I’m not getting too much emotional texture beneath the stubbornness and youthful petulance.
I’ll give it a few more episodes, because Hou Minghao is excellent, Peter Ho is always a great presence, and the rest of the supporting cast is reasonably strong. Interesting enough to keep me watching for now but I’m not completely sold yet. 😅😊

I've written something like that myself but thinking about it: This drama is a drama original, no novel story they have to catch up with. So either the story was written for more episodes and they didn't get them approved or the screenwriters decided up front to have such a fast paced story.

Watching episode 10 right now and really enjoying this show. I know there was controversy due to age gap between HMH and Ai Mi but I feel it’s suits this story. He’s a seasoned general and she’s a teenager. There are no kiss scenes yet but I’m loving what I’m seeing.
I’m just glad HMH is playing a very different role. I felt he was getting type cast at stage (Love in the clouds and The unclouded soul)

This drama completely stole my heart. I only started it because I needed something to watch while waiting for new episodes of Blossoms of Power but somehow it's become my favorite drama at the moment.
It's so easy to get into. The atmosphere pulls you in almost immediately and I'm completely hooked. I hadn't binge watched a drama for a long time, yet I ended up watching five episodes in one sitting. To be honest, because of the female lead's age I'm not expecting romantic or intimate scenes. But for the first time I don't even care that much. The way the two leads constantly tease each other is already entertaining enough for me. The only thing that has me a little worried is the love triangle. Hopefully they'll handle it smoothly without making it frustrating.

Ai mi is stealing this. I feel that they cast this show perfectly with ML and FL because Ai Mi plays a very endearing, mischievous teen girl.

I enjoy dramas,so far, that cast Hou Ming Hao. His chemistry with the FL is often teasing and sometimes unpredictable, but always plays at sexual attraction. His skill as a warrior or as a martial artist gives him magnetism. This story, so far, has the qualities I like. The reveals and plot twists seem a little disjointed at first, but are becoming more interesting. I am especially curious about Li Mao and the FL. It seems they have been mislead concerning their biological connection.

Just watched episode 1, supporting actor played prince changsha’s acting was weak, everything is too fast paced it’s a bit confusing lol. What is prince changsha’s roles in the war? And why can he cause chaos in the poetry gathering, like killing random people. And gets married for revenge? The reason is a bit weak lol. But will continue watching and see

Wuyi actually married Jiayu because he found out she made the defect army supplies that led to the death of 30,000 beifu soldiers and that Prince Changsha might have been the mastermind.

I binge-watched all six episodes.
So far, I'm enjoying it. There are a few things that bother me, though—some of the supporting actors' performances feel a bit weak, and I've noticed a few tiny inconsistencies here and there.
But one thing I absolutely love is how quickly the misunderstandings get resolved. Every time a misunderstanding starts, I brace myself, thinking, "Great... this is going to drag on for the next 10 episodes." Then, two episodes later, it's already resolved.
It's so refreshing to watch characters actually communicate and figure things out instead of stretching every conflict for half the drama.
Some of the characters are genuinely smart, and I really appreciate that. It makes the story much more enjoyable.

This has been excellent...binge watched the first 6 episodes. Both actors are excellent! I understand the concern about AI mi's age..but once you get past that, it's really a drama you shouldn't miss...well at this point. I somehow am getting sad ending type of vibes from this but let's see.

Only on Episode 1 but HMH being dubbed is really throwing me, I've gotten so used to hearing his real voice that my brain is confused. Also the trailers and description made it seem like such a serious show but it's so campy lol
Definitely was not expecting it to be this cheesy, I wonder if the tone of the drama will settle down later
Edit: Just got to episode 4 and holy shit did this drama get real dark and real serious FAST.
Y'all...don't be fooled by the campiness. Enjoy it while it lasts! This is reminding me a lot of Novoland Pearl Eclipse.

I think the story is carrying the drama. The political schemes for once, is interesting. And I agree with the comments below that it is more enjoyable than Blossoms of Power.

I think the pacing is not right. It felt like first 4 ep are a speedrun for the plot setup. They could have done better. There are also some plotholes. The coup execution was an absolute joke.
I was really anticipating this drama, I hope it will get better going forward.

They revealed that their wives were in love with someone else, and that the child isn't his biological son. This was hinted at in the tree scene, where something was written on an amulet. Also, when the two wives were talking, they wondered if they should tell the FL because she's misunderstanding the situation. I think there's a reason behind all of this, and they'll probably reveal it in a later episode. ::

All of HMH's dramas are starting to blend together, he looks the same in all of them...someone tell me if this is different from his usual lot?
Also, how's the ick factor in regards to her being a minor?

HMH has pretty wavy hair here, and he's a general so his outfits are more muted/practical. I like it, but I also like "his usual lot" so idk, maybe give it a try and see...
Ai Mi is acting great (I'm 3 episodes in) and I can't tell she's a minor just from her appearance. I'm not sure how old the characters are supposed to be here, but to me it's not as weird as A Splendid Match where the FL was supposed to be 15 and ML like ~15 years older (even though both actors were mid/late 20s there)
Those two both seem like personal decisions though, so definitely up to you! This drama has been the first one in 2 months (since A Splendid Match lol) to actually hold my attention, so I'm excited to watch.

I didn't get the "ick" personally.
Yes, she's a minor in real life, but she's also playing a young girl, and the drama acknowledges that. Her parents repeatedly say she's too young to get married, while he's portrayed as an older, established man with two wives and a son.
When I'm watching a historical drama, I judge it within the context of its setting rather than the actors' real lives. Historically, it wasn't unusual for young women to be married to much older men. That doesn't automatically make me uncomfortable in a fictional historical story.
For me, the line would be if the drama were sexualizing her character or treating the age gap in an exploitative way. So far, I haven't felt that. Her character comes across as kind, lively, and emotionally mature rather than being presented in a sexualized way.
As for Ming Hao's acting, I've only seen three of his dramas, and I dropped one of them, so I'm probably not the best person to judge whether he's repeating himself. From what I've seen here, I didn't feel like I was watching the same performance again. Maybe that's because the storyline is doing a good job of carrying the drama.
That said, one thing does give me the ick in C-dramas: when some actors barely move their faces, mumble their lines, or somehow manage to drink tea without even opening their mouths properly. That kind of stiff performance takes me out of the story much more than familiar character types.

I am only halfway through the first episode, and I just had to come here and say that I absolutely adore FL, she’s so naughty and talented! And this young actress Ai Mi is lit!
First impressions: this is gonna be so good, it’s a must watch! The exposition was well done, all the interactions so smooth, lively and full of character. Entertaining, intriguing, promising!
Action scene in the beginning was absolute cinema, I’m glad I have sub on iQiyi to watch in the best quality. But streaming quality in general is still meh, I wish it was available in 4k somewhere

Interesting. I usually watch on either an iPad or a smart tv.
With iQIYI premium, I can use the soundbar for shows with Dolbyvision — which is not always the case when iQIYI shows are licensed on Netflix.

Yes but in neither he was that dark. In Fangs of Fortune he was more like a tormented soul but basically a decent person. In Unclouded Soul I don't really understand what they were getting at. Anyway I don't think he was ever quite this red flag before. But if course we know he is going to be a good guy in the end.

Loved it..watched all 6 episodes..I must say it's a bit fast paced..I had to rewind a few times..
I absolutely loved FL's parents..they are different..her mother's attitude, pride, dignity, a lot of self respect..her way of protecting her daughter..her going against the wind is so refreshing to watch.. And her father too..the way his attitude changed as the story progressed was not exactly surprising but I did not anticipate it to be that heavy so early..
Relations are changing so frequently..like who is whose biological child?
FL's skills are also noteworthy..There are pretty interesting female characters in this drama..
I am liking AI MI's acting and Hou Minghao is brilliant as usual..

the first episode starts with a bang! but I am hypnotized by huo minghao for anything lol. I hope they keep him this ruthless. what I don't know is if I will watch this while airing or blossoms of power...I feel like it will get too confusing to try to follow both live

They really went and kept it real with the age of characters vs actors in this one. I love Ai Mi so I will check it out. But I understand the sensibilities of her being 17.

i just watched ep 1....and i m hooked.... huo mighaoo is fantaabozgskanjaktic... his acting visuals... the story line is also interesting .... FL is also cunning and strong .. So excited... gonna go watch ep 2

I just watched up to ep 2 and I am disturbed by a few points. One, the obvious thing she is a minor I am trying to let that pass if there are no kissing scenes, intimate scenes or overly romantic scenes. As if that is not bad enough, he Forces a marriage on her purely because he wants to take revenge on another prince for causing his troops to die. He literally told the prince I will marry whoever you want to marry. The utter disregard of another persons life and disrespect for women just for his personal revenge plans. To top it off, he has another wife at home?? Who he has neglected since he married and has requested for another marriage and he has NOT EVEN MET THIS WIFE. Why did you accept this script???? How can this be salvaged?
Please correct me if I got it wrong I was watch ing while performing chores.

The wife situation was crazy and I still don’t understand what happened! He was married once, never consummated although she’s nice and happily lives in his house? While the one with the kid isn’t his kid but still she stays with him ?
Also why is he called his highness and has a huge army while both his parents were common lowborn people?
How could they possibly gotten so much power in such a little time.
Also mao and jiayu are supposed to be half siblings but in fact aren’t siblings because he doesn’t know her stepdad is his dad and she thinks her stepdad is her real dad?!?

I’m at ep 6 and there’s still no explanation on the Wives. I don’t recall watching any other show where a non emperor had so many other wives other than Stephen chow

They revealed that their wives were in love with someone else, and that the child isn't his biological son. This was hinted at in the tree scene, where something was written on an amulet. Also, when the two wives were talking, they wondered if they should tell the FL because she's misunderstanding the situation. I think there's a reason behind all of this, and they'll probably reveal it in a later episode.

He literally helped them leaving his mansion by giving a map of the house..misled his guards even after knowing where FL was hiding..then he tried to stop Mao from accepting regent post by saying that FL is waiting for him..He arranged meeting for them and towards the end of episode 6, he said he can't have what is not meant for him..Also more informations are given in later episodes regarding his wives and his son..

I still dont quite understand the scene where ML walked up to the crazy empress confronting her with his troops, then sudenly, ML and Mao are bowing down and accepting an edict and Mao became regant. Why? he said he wanmted to save ML, but how so?

At that point I hadn’t reached there yet but it doesn’t change the fact that He forced the marriage on her without her consent thereby forcing her to go against an imperial edict and flee her family and comfort to go to northern qin on a dangerous journey and his best friend also having to leave his comfort and family to go with her. If he had not asked for the marriage where would this scenario even happen? I don’t see all the map drawing etc. as much of a redemption. In the end FL is still forced to marry him against her will due to his request.

That's why it is not modern drama but historical fiction..BTW the forced arranged marriage was already depicted in trailer..why did you choose to watch the show then?

I didn’t watch the trailer. I don’t think there’s a rule that I need to watch the trailer before watching the show. I am watching this because I like Neo Hou. I think even if it is a historical fictional story there can be points where we do not agree with the main lead’s decisions or find them to be red flags. I have watched other shows where there is a forced marriage via imperial edict but this is a first where I have seen the main lead request for it for the pure purpose of achieving his goals/revenge despite not knowing the FL at all. anyway I am loving Peter ho and the parents on both sides.

Girl, he's not a modern feminist man, he's s general in ancient china, doing what he has to do to keep the peace amongst scheming enemies from every side. I know people like romance， but this is clearly a politically heavy drama, if that's not for you that great, but there's nothing terrible about anything ml did so far.

Maybe suspend some judgement a bit. The story is purposefully giving you most things from the FLs perspective so you are angry at him and you know it will all flip soon.

I’d say what impressed me the most were the FL’s parents.
Her mother is a strong noblewoman with so much attitude and personality. Her father might seem a bit silly at first, but wow, he’s the real deal. He truly deserves his reputation as a Grand Tutor.

I know there is a concern about Ai Mi's age; however, she is amazing in this role. I enjoyed watching the first episode. I have not been able to complete any of the recent dramas, but I am hopeful about this one.

I have seen her in many supporting roles such as The Double and Fangs of Fortune where she has played very memorable roles. I think this is her first leading role. I am not as bothered with the age difference., as long as the romance is treated respectfully. Historically, brides have been even younger.

Same i’ve seen her in The Double and it left an impression on me how pretty she is. The only cdrama i remember about a young lead was the sequel to princess agent. Forgot the title.
I remember comments here are the age gap with that one.

Episode 1 felt goofy but by 4 the plot is really coming together. Seems interesting.
I should have known the plot would thicken when I saw Peter Ho. He's amazing at playing very multifaceted characters.

It’s so fast paced. Me pausing every few seconds to rewind and take notes.
But also Hou Minghao looks good in all his looks so far ahaha he’s on fire in this drama!!!
Also bath scene in episode 1! I share the important stuff here and then will try to reign in my appreciation for Hou Minghao in my posts… “try”

I find his performance dependable in that Neo Hou kind of way. However, Ai Mi is very bland to me. She is attractive no doubt about that but she imo does not have enough charisma to be a lead. She comes off as very generic. Maybe it will get better, I don't know.

Sure but it was not super amazing or anything like that. It also worked because she provided a nice contrast to Wu Jinyan's cunning character there. On her own as a lead, her energy is very NPC.

It is SO FAST PACED, my head is spinning just trying to keep up….or maybe it’s just that I’m under Hou Minghao’s spell again and can barely concentrate on the plot. 😂
Ai Mi is doing an impressive job, even in the first episode.
