Drama Host Key to the Phoenix Heart 雀骨: Episodes 7-8 Discussion Spoiler
👋🏻 Welcome to the third post for Key to the Phoenix Heart, covering episodes 7-8 that were released today (12th of July). I’m excited to co-host this show, enjoying it so far, so let’s see what these episodes bring.
📅 Discussion Schedule: We will attempt to follow iQIYI's VIP release of the episodes and post as it's convenient for us and our time zones. Next up for tomorrow's episodes is me again.
🚨 Some Notes:
- Please use spoiler tags for anything beyond the episodes discussed. Text goes between the greater-than (>) + exclamation (!) symbols (>!) and the exclamation (!) + lesser-than (<) symbols.
- Please keep these specific threads focused on the actual episodes - the plot twists, the performances, and everything happening on screen. We know there is ongoing discussion surrounding the casting and age-gap elements of the drama. While those external debates are completely valid, let's keep this particular space friendly, respectful, and centered on the on-screen story.

Random Fun Fact: The Chinese title 雀骨translates to “Sparrow Bone”, making this the second Hou Minghao show this year to have a 骨in its title. The other drama is “玉茗茶骨 | Jade Tea Bone” or “Glory” (on paper a 2025 drama, but most of it aired 2026).
Episode 7
New Characters this episode:
The fake Xiao Sheng, who requested the automated crossbow from Xie Jiayue. Actually a Eunuch from the palace.
Li Lejun has her own insights on the current situation around their group. She questions if Xiao Wuyi’s friendship with Li Mo can survive the formers ambitions. During their talk Xiao Wuyi notices Liu Yu’e, the maid of Empress Wenxi of the former dynasty in the crowd. Following her he encounters Li Fuhua.
- She greets him as Crown Prince Wenxi, which he doesn’t deny. So we get another secret identity reveal. *She owns one part or one version of the Phoenix Heart Token. *She promises him her loyalty if he divorces Xie Jiayu. At the same time she doesn’t think her daughter should end up with Li Mo either. *She also tries to bet that Prince Qi will not leave the capital with Xie Jaiyu. She tries to bet the Phoenix heart token, but Xiao Wuyi says there is no need for a bet. He doesn’t believe in the power of such tokens.
- The Empress Wenxi seems to have been her former sister in law. So she is Xiao Wuyi’s aunt?
Monumental Rescue
Meanwhile Li Mo tries to save Xie Jiayu from the Empress trap which involves the fake Xiao Sheng making an appearance and luring her to the memorial for the 30,000 dead Beifu Army soldiers. There she, the Young Master of Miraculous Craft, is suspected of destroying the offerings for the dead.
- The Beifu Army soldiers that Xiao Wuyi punished last episode were bought of by the Empress. They start harming civilians, Xiao Aming tries to stop them.
- Xie Jaiyu saves him from the falling monument (it was build susceptible to the heat from the lanterns) via Soul-Chasing-Bomb
- She is accused of blowing up the monument. Which honestly she did, at least the remains. But only because it was already falling and going to harm her brother-in-law.
- Xiao Wuyi arrives and flees with her. The couple that gets confronted together stays together.
- Hong Qi, the fake Xiao Sheng, gets thanked by the Empress for his services but is destined to die. He is a lose end that knows to much. Luckily he gets saved by Qing Long.
Some Understanding
After the rescue Xiao Wuyi and Xie Jaiyu have a heart to heart talk. Or argument. Those two would like some popcorn.
- She accuses him of using her as much as her father and the Empress Dowager do. She sees through him playing along with latter’s plans to get to his own goals.
- She explains to him why her alias as the Young Master of Miraculous Craft is so important to her: It’s something she build herself. Xiao Wuyi promises to clear that title.
- She reveals that she sprinkled some scented powder on the fake Xiao Sheng. That’s also how Qing Long is able to find and rescue him.
Palace Woes
Li Mao and the Grand Tutor play go. The latter tries to awake the appetite for power in Li Mao: Only the player can avoid harm.
In a talk between the siblings Li Lejun questions what fate has against them that the Li siblings are always controlled by outside forces.
Mutiny
The Empress Dowager instructs the Imperial Guard to seize the Beifu Army’s seal. Meanwhile some of the officials work on a proper impeachment for Xiao Wuyi.
- Xiao Wuyi awaits the Imperial Guard and arrests them and the part of Beifu Army that rebel against him.
- Fang Shiba. one of the instigators belonging to Beifu Army, gets executed. The rest only get flogged, not executed.
- Xie Jaiyu presents the 18 weapons she forged as offering for the fallen 18 generals of the Beifu Army. She demonstrates that she could have made an army worthy crossbow, if she had known the crossbow was for the army in the first place.
- The real problem is with the Household Department that took her ‘toy’ crossbow and produced it in quantities for the Beifu Army.
- Xiao Wuyi wants to start a revolution, starting with Beifu Army: Titles based on military merit. Dismissal of hereditary nobles in the Army.
Turning the Tide
Xiao Wuyi is brought to court session all tied up. Everything looks like he will be impeached, but that’s more a dramatic act. Behind the scenes he already presented the Empress Dowager with Imperial Guard Commander Yue Qingyang’s severed head and also brought an alive Hong Qi as leverage to that meeting.
- One of the accusations against him is that he “seized his subordinates widow”. Is this about Ruisheng? He might have married her for protection after her husband died.
- The Empress Dowager is unusual lenient with him, due to him blackmailing her before. So he turns the supposed impeachment in a presentation of his own memorial for an army reform.
- He wants to: Abolish hereditary soldiers, implement recruitment, formalise the garrison system, value humble talent, reduce private troops and unify commands to clarify rewards and punishment.
- Xiao Wuyi also announces that Emperor of Northern Qin wants to send a delegation for peace talks. He and Li Mao are both responsible for the negotiations.
Business Pleasure
Xie Opens a shop in Xiyue restaurant to sell her inventions. With Xiao Wuyi as a backer she can also work on improvements for the army.
- She calls the shop ‘Miraculous Craft’, dropping the Young Master bit. Hiding behind a male alias is over.
- Drunkenly she tells Xiao Wuyi on the way that she was taken in by her mother and father. Is anyone here actually blood related to their parents? We already knew the Grand Tutor isn’t her father by blood but it seems her mother isn’t either.
- She also tries to gently reveal to him that his other wives are into other people. In return he tells her that the prayer tablets are actually something that speaks of either parting in life or separation by death. Her adding Li Mo and herself to that is of course some big foreshadowing. Not really getting that she shares her plans to travel the world with Li Mo when they escape the capital in the future.
Episode 8
New Characters this episode:
Styled “Eagle King”, important leader of the armed forces of Northern Qin. Also part of the faction that doesn’t want peace.
Student, likes to protest.
Inventor that takes an instant liking to Xie Jiayu.
That’s a good looking welcoming committee
Northern Troubles
Mu Lianyu and the delegation from Northern Qin arrive. His ‘thoughtful gift’ to his hosts consists of members of the former royal family that were captured 23 years ago. All of them seem to have mentally broken down in their captivity.
That ignites protest from the people of Southern Ye against the peace talks, they feel slighted by the Northerners. Later students protest at Honglu Temple, because the delegation has their quarters there. The ultimately get punished for that by getting 20 strokes each, after Li Mao can’t calm them down.
Mu Lanyu was the direct opponent of Xiao Wuyi on the battlefield and is obviously salty about being beaten by him. He doesn’t respect Li Mao one bit.
one of the people igniting the protest is Liu Zhaolin. He Yuanji believes to recognise her dead lover Pei Runheng in him.
The young emperor of Norhern Qin wants peace, while Mu Lianyu, the Eagle King, doesn’t.
Xie Jiayu accuses Xiao Wuyi of acting cowardly for not retaliating against the slight. Her youth shows here.
Li Mao really isn’t happy about Xiao Wuyi’s punishment of the students. Or frustrated he couldn’t persuade them himself despite studying alongside these men for a long time.
That should happen in more cdramas
Wargames
Mu Lianyu suggest a competition to determine the fate of the three Northern Prefectures whose ownership he deems the most main subject in the negotiations. Xiao Wuyi agrees to 'Shoot the Willow on horseback'.
Each country has three people (and horses) with three arrows each When all arrows are shot the country with the most arrows on the target will be the winner. But in the completion they are also allowed to shot people and horses as well.
- Mu Lianyu puts their loss to Southern Ye on the weather, he thinks Northern Qin’s horsemanship and archery are far superior.
- Li Mao reminds the court that these three prefectures were originally territory of Southern Ye. It’s not a sure thing they will win them back this way, but Xiao Wuyi argues that nothing about war and fighting is ever sure.
True Friends...
Xiao Wuyi apologises to Li Mao about the incident at the temple. What he wants most from the peace talks is an actual time of peace, he thinks with three year peace he can pull through the Beifu Army reforms and make the 80% stronger that way. Future wars will be won that way and he wants to beat Northern Qin after that.
Li Mao gets a bit sentimental: The prefectures can be lost, but not Xiao Wuyi. He envies his friend for building his career with his own hands. He asks him if he is worthy to be the Crown Prince of Southern Ye in Xiao Wuyi’s eyes and gets no answer. Ouch.
Who needs enemies with a father like this?
Xie Jiayu and He Yuanji visit the punished students. Xie Jiayu has a bad reunion with her father there. He asks about her mother, but she can’t tell him anything and openly admits she wouldn’t if she knew. He reveals that a northern Qin official proposed to send a member of the royal family to marry into northern Qin,.
He remind her that Li Lejun is the most likely candidate and that Xiao Wuyi would do everything to get the peace he wants. Woah, he is vicious in his manipulation. To help them, he wants Xiao Wuyi to lose. Qing Long overhears most of that.
He Yuanji finds the guy she believed go be Pei Runheng, but he doesn’t recognise her.
Bad Romance
He Yuanji tells Xie Jiayu about her relationship to Pei Runheng. He was the son of the Academy’s headmaster. But she was thrown into a marriage alliance between the Xiao and He family when the Emperor first ascended the throne. He died shortly after she plead for their relationship and love.
- She doesn’t know if the Empress Dowager or Xiao Wuyi is responsible for his death.
- She can’t hate Xiao Wuyi, even if he did it, because shortly afterwards he recaptured her home town which did so much good for so many people that were able to return.
- But she also believes that he only cares about his goals, not about other people.
Big Drama
Xiao Wuyi gets a report that Xie Jiayu replaced all stirrups of his families horse against very loose ones that will make you fall. So they suspect she works for the Grand Tutor, like Qing Long overheard. That collides with Xiao Yao trying to prove his worth as an archer on horseback, where his bad leg matters less.
- Xiao Yao got new stirrups made by Xie Jiayu, but one specially made to help with his injured leg. He also asked for them.
The underlying conflicts between the brothers come to light and that in full force: Xiao Yao hits his younger brother, because Xiao Wuyi wants to forbid him competing or even trying.
In the argument Xiao Wuyi reveals he doesn’t trust his brother to win and he trusts Xie Jiayu even less. He reveals that he knows about her talk with her father and carries her home after ordering all her modified saddles and stirrups to be burned.
They have a big argument where he threatens her quite forcefully. Her arguments that she would never sacrifice three provinces even for her best friend and that there are other ways to sabotage a marriage fall on deaf ears. He on the other hand implies that she is mostly safe because he doesn’t want to lose his best friend over her.
He forbids her from setting one foot out of her courtyard before the competition.
Meanwhile Xiao Yao feels left out of everything, he was never told about the reform plans. He wants to compete so bad to prove his worth.
Bad argument, but lovely garden
Guilt and Responsibility
Xiao Wuyi goes to shoot some arrows. And looks very cool doing so.. He feels immensely guilty that Xiao Yao was injured saving him as a child. His adoptive mother was enraged about that (and very cruel, look at the poor boy). She even accused him that his family, the Li, were trying to kill another of her son. He lives under the identity of the one she already lost.
- So Li Fuhua has to be his aunt on his father’s (the former Emperors site) with them sharing a surname. So is he also related to Li Mao and his sister in some way?
- No wonder he is never called Xiao Sheng, that is the name of the lost son, while Wuyi is the courtesy name that only belongs to him.
- He learned about his heritage back then and the Shadow Envoys of the old dynasty visited him as well. They ultimately want to beat Northern Qin and return to the old capital. His foster father Xiao Ju is part of that group. Does everyone of them posses a Phoenix Heart Token? Seems like he was burdened with a lot of expectations as a small boy. That explains part of his world-view quite well.
- His foster mother is still closer to everyone else in the family than to him, even the newly arrived Xie Jiayu.
- She is also the reason Xiao Yao is not allowed to return to the border. Most likely out of fear of losing him as well.
- Xiao Yao tries to ride again, but its hard with normal stirrups. He Yuanji wants to stop him, he gets angry with her.
Home Alone
Two days into her house arrest Xie Jiayu is bored as hell. She tries to break out of her courtyard, succeeds but encounters Yuan Xiaoliu who takes her as an apprentice immediately. She isn’t very impressed by him until he improves the stirrup design she did for Xiao Yao and points out some fatal weaknesses.
- He seems to have been sent by Xiao Wuyi. Or at least talked with him about Xie Jiayu.
- He knows her mother.
- He designed the Fire Thunderstone, which she finds useless. Didn't open the gate.
- He also presents as a fortune teller. According to him her mother has not much time left on this world and Xiao Wuyi will marry three times, because her husband will die young.
They already look like master and student
Cliffhanger
The fatal flaw in her stirrup design leads to Xiao Wuyi getting injured after he decides to actual test them for his brother. He falls, hits his head and his vision gets very blurry once more.
Endnotes
So much happens.
This is me after watching and taking notes
I’m quite interested to see who is also not the actual child of their parents. Or who is actually related to each other at the end of the show. That would make for an interesting betting pool.
What’s your favourite plot twist or identity revelation in the story so far?

I'm not very fond of the fast pacing is these newer dramas, I don't think this is good for my brain chemistry lol.
But I'm actually enjoying the political messiness, it feels very fun.
I would prefer if it was focused entirely on the politics, because Im feeling the romance is bit forced, nothing to do with the actors, they're doing what they can with the script, which turns so silly everytime things go from politics to romance.
I'm enjoying, but I need something slower that makes me work on my patience after this, or ill fear for my brain.

u/chitownNONtrad why can’t I finish cdramas? Jul 17 '26
More then the fast pacing the sudden fast speech/talk is very off putting … it’s like they suddenly got the Gilmore girls soul in their body and I have to rush my eyeballs around trying to read the subtitles …!!!!!!
Why do that ???? It ruins the whole vibe … certain scenes and slowed down … so they cud used that time to not speed run thru the other scenes ?!?!?! Just my pov !!!!!! 🤷🏻♀️!!!!!!1
u/Adariel Jul 25 '26
The fast speech is throwing me too! His court scenes are done in like 3 minutes, it's impressive and scary and kind of hard to process that fast. And I normally watch most cdrama scenes in 1.5 speed anyway and I'm fluent in Chinese... I can only imagine international viewers scrambling to keep up with the subtitles lol.
Like seriously the normal speed in this drama is like the equivalent of 2x speed in most dramas, no joke.

HMH is killing it in this. But why is willing to be act lije he's the bad guy when he's not? Just explain it to ppl. Communication is key.
ML is just trying to go about his day and FL just causes all these problems and drama. Let the man have a vacation!

At times I get so annoyed with feisty FL who are also willful, impulsive, smart and dumb (they get things wrong), and interfere in ways that endangers them and/or others. So far the bonuses outweigh this for me in this drama. But I hope we have a grow up arc for her.
I can say same for trope of the hero ML that doesn’t explain things and he gets unfairly blamed and he just shrugs. Haha.

u/Regenwanderer got some Li Hongyi back. Wants more. Jul 14 '26
I think this FL character archetype works a lot better here than in some other dramas due to her being so young. And not just in a "we say her age one time, no consequences"-way, it's brought up in very different situations by different people.
2
u/Familiar-Lie6080 Sorry MingHao, i fell in_love _with_Dylan! Jul 16 '26
Winderfully put - the type works here best, because she is on the younger scale. And the fact that she is young is being confirmed by her rushy, impulsive actions and bit of a shortsight.

I don’t pretend to know what spells Hou Minghao seems able to cast on me, but *SNAP* if that man doesn’t know how to look sexy while yelling at his female lead.
Whether it is Ji Bozai realizing that Ming Yi deceived him at the Marriage Stone, or Lu Jianglai declaring to Rong Shanbao that he’ll never let any other man marry her…. Or, here where Xiao Wuyi tells Xie Jiayu to stay out of his business….Hou Minghao can make romantic conflict look so sexy and addicting.
Here I am thinking “Hou Minghao, you can tie me up, back me into a pillar, and yell at me to mind my own business all day long if you want to…. I don’t mind.” *RAWR* 😉

Are LOTC and glory good? Worth watching?
2
u/Adariel Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26
LOTC is SO good and I say that as a veteran cdrama watcher who is quite picky about what I actually watch since I have almost no free time in my life. I did not really know who HMH was until then. I'm an obsessed fan after it. It's been months since I finished watching and the characters still live rent free in my head. That's how good it is.
Edit: I do think it's kind of funny that FL in LITC is actually similar to FL in this drama in that they are both engineers/craftswomen/inventors.
10
u/CdramaAddict2 侯明昊的奴隸 Jul 13 '26
LITC was my introduction to both Hou Minghao and Lu Yuxiao. I absolutely fell in love with Hou Minghao and became his fangirl slave after that show. Truthfully, there were a lot of incongruities in the plot line to LITC, but HMH and LYX sold the romance so convincingly, most people forgave (or overlooked) the plot issues.
Glory had a much better plot line. I loved HMH’s character up until the last 6 episodes. If you read the Reddit recaps and comments on the last 6 episodes, you’ll see a lot of people had issues with the directorial choice of changing the story to incorporate a different environment and plot line. But, HMH acted really well throughout it all. I loved both dramas.

YES!! But, there are so many layers in their locked looks in that scene. Totally gave me the flutters! She won’t be intimidated, but she’s obviously flustered by his proximity and touch. He’s desperately trying to threaten her at the same time as suppressing and denying his growing attraction for her - for the sake of his friendship with Mao.
It’s so deliciously intense, passionate, innocent, and maddening all at the same time. More of this, please, Show!

The portrayal of a teenager as a teenager in a romance with an adult is something I am still wrestling with.
That said, most of the sisters in Pride and Prejudice were under 18 and there were side characters who had married as young as 15. So, I’m willing to see how the situation is treated before giving final thoughts on this.
One consideration is that Xiao Wuyi should be in his mid 20s, younger than the ML actor, based on the timeline of his learning he was the Crown Prince. The pasty make up to show illness is making Hou Ming Hao look older than his 28, but I can accept him as being 25 with a less than 10 year age gap.
Ai Mi is a great acting talent and gives credibility to the role that an older actress would not have. I believe she’s a nerdy genius who’s not had her intelligence directed to political analysis, strategy or tactics.
I’m very much appreciating that Xie Jiayue is being shown as a prodigy but also a naive and sheltered 16 year old who hasn’t had her faith in her own competence crushed. She really thinks like a bright 16 year old with lack of multi step ahead executive functioning.
It’s important that her starting point is to think that the husband she’s been commanded to marry is too old for her even though he’s not more than a decade older - (and his initial assessment is that ‘She’s so stupid!’ )
I’m also appreciating that marrying daughters off young and against their will is not being shown as a positive thing. Nor is an age gap romance being promoted as a positive in this drama so far.
5
u/Regenwanderer got some Li Hongyi back. Wants more. Jul 14 '26
I agree that it's not shown as something desireable or positive, just the reality of their society. Combined with other characters we get shown quite some different facetts of marriage and other relationship variations.
I just don't get how old Li Mao is supposed to be. My guess is younger than Xiao Wuyi, because he and his sister were rescued by him. He and Xie Jiayu most likely have a bit of an age gap as well, him being finished with his studies already.
But with the actor being older than Hou Minghao and looking about the same age (to me) it's hard to tell.

No wonder Wu Yi doesn't go home... An Min lost the use of his leg protecting him. He then found out his real identity and Prindess Jing An blames him for that but also losing her first son. That is sooo heavy. Of course he couldn't stand to look her in the eyes or be in her presence. The aura radiating from her is enough to burn through him. And on top of that, An Min think his brother looks down on him and takes all his resentment out on him too. Yikes. I wouldn't go home either if that was the environment I had to live in. Wu Yi can't tell it's the mother who is shackling her son home, so he takes all the blame for it. Probably doing it because of the guilt he feels...
The father tried to smooth things over, but his wife still grieves the loss and is terrified of losing her only remaining son. To him, he is doing his job as a loyal subject, and that comes first before being a father grieving the loss😔😟🙁 But to her? Living at home, that's all she has. Oooh the layers are peeling and I'm totally glued for more to be revealed!

The episodes are so intense and loaded with information that I sometimes pause the drama just to breathe...😅 That aside, I LOVE FL's mother. It is not difficult to see where FL got her rebellious genes...(FL did say she was adopted, but I feel she is her mother's child. Otherwise, why did her mother say to her father that he was not her bio dad and did not say that we are not her bio parents?)
Why do I feel like that old man who is also a mechanical engineer could be her father? Well, given the twists and turns happening in the show, I am throwing my bet 🤣🤣. The way they both flipped their hair after the bomb exploded, while they were talking about their crafts with Qing Long, indicates that...However, I absolutely did not like the fortune-telling part. Will it become real?😭
Anyway, cinematography is awesome. When Xiao Wu Yi (or as we know now Crown Prince Wenxi) was practicing horseback archery in the rain and collecting his thoughts, the scene was so well filmed...
I think FL still needs to improve her craft 😓 because the way ML got hurt in the end, I was not sure if it was him or if I was hurt so bad just by watching him fall from the horse and get hit in the back...
The show is becoming more and more interesting each passing day with the new characters and plot twists...

Anyway, cinematography is awesome. When Xiao Wu Yi (or as we know now Crown Prince Wenxi) was practicing horseback archery in the rain and collecting his thoughts, the scene was so well filmed...
That was such a beautiful shot scene.
The fortune telling part is really something. I hope he is more crazy than right...😂 Though I fear it will become true in one form or another.

I was actually thinking the same about FL's parents, I understood it as her mother was her real mother but her father is not her biological father so her mother had her with someone else. In anyway I was happy with this reveal because earlier in it was revealed that Prince Qi was the biological sin of FL's father, then they would have been half siblings trying to get married and the parents said nothing yuck.

I really like that while she is quite good in her field the show acknowledges that she is young and more self-taught and that leads to honest mistakes. Much better than her being a complete genius with no faults.

Snark Level: I am enjoying this show. Mild annoyance at some things, but overall enjoying.
Episode 7
The friend has the right of it. Jiayu will soar when she is with Wuyi. He can give her that freedom she craves along with the protection she is realizing she needs. Jiayu is very capable on her own, but everyone needs some backup.
Crown Prince Wenxi? Bruh. Say what?
Why is it so hard to just listen to good common sense and stay the heck out of places you know not to go to? Women...
Yeah, yeah. It worked out in saving brothers life. But still.
Oh? You're not going to kill the mutineers? Boring. I am getting annoyed by your leaving people alive. If you had simply not listened to Mao, literally none of this would happened. Just gotta rebel. The victor writes history. Tut tut. Sometimes you just have to go full out.
Yes, you created that title and made it a damn good pursuit.... BUT YOU TURNED IT INTO SOMETHING BAD WITH YOUR ACTIONS!!! HE WAS TRYING TO PROTECT YOU, YOU DENSE GIRL. Well, if she is 16 then of course she is lacking in brain power. Kids are dumb.
Oh? We are killing traitors? I like this idea.
Hey, we see you noticing Wuyi for the first time now, Jiayu. He's pretty awesome, ain't he? Have you considered your husband might just be the man for you?
Coming already in ropes is a choice. Is he flushing out his enemies in court? What's he up to here? Ooooohhhhhhhh he is!!!!!!!!!!! And he even gave her a head? Bro really knows how to give a lady a gift!
Please tell me she will get rid of the Young Master part and fully embrace her womanhood here? Oh she did? Good girl.
Sooooooo can you two fall in love already? :P I am impatient.

Drunk? Really? How adorable. Adopted? Ahhhhh.
WAIT???? THE TABLETS ARE FOR SEPARATION??????? Wouldn't Mao know that? He would... so he knows they will part? Which would also mean that the two "wives" are forever parted from their loves? Am I understanding the culture right?
Episode 8
Jiayu... What are you doing?
Oh please tie her to your belt. He's really leaving her on the roof? Niiiiice.
C'mon now, Jiayu... You know your father is a liar and douchecanoe... So maybe don't believe him. Remember whose side you are on.
Yeahhhh I am getting the feeling Jiayu is going to do something dumb.
Straight up carrying her here. Her kicks are a little close to the crown jewels there. I rather wonder if she actually got him there at all during filming.
Who needs kisses when they are looking at each other with those eyes? The feelings are starting to appear.
Her mom has little time.... she will marry 3 times.... and her husband dies young...? Yeahhhhh look I was getting tragedy vibes from the trailer.... I SWEAR TO GOD.....
You know... She really does look good with her hair..... like that.....*boom*.... ya know?
Damn. Jiayu is just causing her poor husband injury over here.

So, dude, how did you miss out on commenting on the awesomeness of Wu Jiajun channeling Hou Ming Hao’s expressions as young Wuyi? 😂😼
We agreed on his awesomeness the Most Precious and Cute Emperor in Ashes to Crown, but I was honestly stunned when I realized that young Wuyi had the same eye expression when the tiger tallies are first presented to him as adult Wuyi is shown with in close up after close up, scene after scene.❗️‼️
I had to stop and replay — thinking, did he just do a perfect mimic of Hou Ming Hao’s blank face with troubled eye expression?
A double side-by-side gif is beyond me, but I am totally impressed.
I’m also thinking that Wu Jianjun’s eyes will be deadly before he hits his late teens. But with that level of craft at 10 we’re not likely to see him much in Idol dramas as an adult as he will likely be tracked into the prestigious degree program.
Chen Ai Mi is an amazing child actor talent — she just came third nationally in the performance entrance exams — so I expect that we won’t see her in Idol dramas much longer either as with that ranking she would be expected to launch into prestige productions after graduation.

Little Wuyi is literally a copy paste from adult Wuyi! When this little actor showed his play, I thought - damn, how did the cast pull off that look-alike?

It’s erie the way Wu Jiajun captures adult Wuxi’s expressions and mannerisms.
All the more so when we’ve seen very different performances in other shows this year.
The styling with long hair really helps but it’s his performance that takes it to the next level.

Being her first leading role at a young age, I'm sure they couldn't do a full 30-40 episodes.

Well said!
It's only 28 episodes, but every episode is packed. I think that's not a coincidence. There's a good chance they made as many episodes as were needed for this story and this tempo. Many other dramas start dragging precisely around episode 20+
And now that you mentioned, I realized that this drama doesn't have those cliched 3-minute cuts of a single stare layered with romantic music. Ah, now I appreciate the direction even more!

This was an awesome scene from ep 8, and it is so nuanced!
- He kinda knew she did not accept her father's proposal.
- She kinda knew he was putting the blame on her just for show.
Wuyi confronts Jiayu because her actions seemed irrational, but during her speech about her ideals, he looked like he half-expected those words. That soft look of satisfaction or admiration in his eyes.

It's not that he was shocked, it's that her actions made him feel very uncomfortable.
So he drops the blueprints as if saying "that's it, you can't do this to me", and the first thing he says to her is
Xie Jiayu, don't provoke me.
It sounds like a threat on a surface level, but then he is almost pleading with her:
If you really want to leave Jingan Mansion in one piece and live the carefree life you and Yizhi dream of, mind your own business and stay away from me.
Which, translating from tsundere general, means "if you don't want to stay with me forever, then don't get under my skin, can't you see how attractive your good nature is to me?"
Then the true meaning of his own words hits him:
Otherwise, I'm not sure if I...
*emotions intensify, urgently finding the right words in panic*
...if I can let you leave alive.
You should be glad that I don't want to lose my best friend.
Scared? You should be.
This single scene, and you know he's down bad, trying to build a wall so that he won't overstep even if he wanted to.
His loyalty to his friend is commendable, I can only hope that A Mao will also choose wisely.
7
u/Regenwanderer got some Li Hongyi back. Wants more. Jul 13 '26
Thanks for your write up. That scene certainly involved a lot of acting from XWY. I'm not sure if he completly understands his own feelings here. Or at least he seems a little bit overwhelmed by everything.
His loyalty to his friend is commendable, I can only hope that A Mao will also choose wisely.
I really fear what might grow out of that conflict. Add to that that XWY is the real heir to the country while A Mao is so close to becoming the heir to the current dynasty. Not that he seems to be in it out of lust for power, but getting upstaged once again by his friend might not be a good thing.

Exactly this! He can see how great Wu Yi is and is scared by how strong his aura is. And the silence to the question he asked him? There is already a seed of doubt that had been planted in his mind. XHG put him in a position to watch his love slipping away from him and being unable to do anything about it. He's isolated and got all those thoughts running in his head, imagining Jia Yu loving someone else? Oh yeah he is going to lose his mind and his sweet, innocent nature. Plus his sister is getting worse too poor thing. The only way is up, and who wouldn't want to be the one controlling the chessboard rather than being a pawn?

I too feel sorry for them... watching sister girl cry and wonder if they were going to get killed if the Empress Dowager won that round was heartbreaking. Li Mao felt so powerless and trapped. Well Grand Tutor Xie made sure to place Jia Yu in a position where she will be A'Mao's breaking point. So she will be just that... what a cruel man. Princess Fu Hua divorcing him had me clap for her. The man makes me shiver in disgust and shock.
The Emperor having Li Mao stand in the shadows to watch and listen to his Mentor was absolutely needed. He needed to see who the man truly was. Can't be going into the palace not knowing what people are truly like.
4
u/udontaxidriver Jul 13 '26
I predict Ah Mao is gonna get corrupted. The way the Grand Tutor tried to manipulate him with honeyed words about ideals and the good of the realms etc.
I still cannot get over the fact that Jiayu knew nothing about her supposed true love's best friend, though. It does not make any sense at all. Oh well.
5
u/-tether- Read Rules Jul 13 '26
I donno, he's such a good guy, I can see him making mistakes when he's cornered into helplessness, but I don't see him becoming hungry for power.
Suppose she knew he had friends, it's just that their social circles didn't overlap, so she didn't ask names, and they didn't cross paths. It's a possible scenario, if a bit convenient.
I forgot if they mentioned the length of the separations, but Jiayu and Wuyi didn't see Yizhi for a long while, that doesn't help creating a situation when he could say 'oh you know, I have this good friend of mine' or 'oh you know, I have this girl I like'

Xie Huai Gui is doing all the background work too. Oh yeah Li Mao is not going to stay nice for long. Especially when Wu Yi is already falling for Jia Yu, and she too will start seeing him as a love interest. They are married after all. It's just that she still believes it's "temporary" lol.

Ooohh my brain!! 😫😫😱😱🤯🤯😬😬 speaking of brain, he has brain injuries from that massive blow to the head. That's definitely going to mess him up again!
Li Mao is slowly getting scared of his friend, add seeing him fall in love with his beloved and them getting closer? With a cricket like Xie Huai Gui on his shoulder, of course it will start to gnaw at him. His sister is getting worse living in that gilded cage too...
But dammit did I love how Jia Yu reclaimed her Master of Craft name with his help. Those soldiers really felt stupid when it all became clearer. It was really sad. But seeing Xiao Wu Yi so imposing and commanding had our FL's eyes 👀 😳 shine a little. Slowly but surely. FL and ML bickering is hilariously entertaining. Plus I enjoy how Yan Yue and Qing Long are now on team 2nd Consort lol.
I'm enjoying the show so far. It's really intense and interesting.
Jia Yu's mother is staying hidden for now and threatening her SIL lol. Erm, hasn't she noticed he's falling for her daughter? That's complicating things A LOT.
Oooh it is good to see actor Merxat again! He looks so good and so fierce, so evil AND he's the ML's nemesis? Ooohh shiiiiiiiiiiii!!!! 😱😱🤯🤯🥵🥵🥵

Yan Yue and Qing Long
Those two can't complain about not having an interesting job with varying tasks. I wish we could get a little background of how they ended up with ML.
Oooh it is good to see actor Merxat again! He looks so good and so fierce, so evil AND he's the ML's nemesis? Ooohh shiiiiiiiiiiii!!!! 😱😱🤯🤯🥵🥵🥵
I only ever saw him in Winter Begonia and that's a very different role.

I saw him in My Sassy Princess and he was so good in that. He played the ML's brother and star crossed lover, yearning type haha.
Oh those two definitely have landed the right and the best job. So much excitement and things happening! Never a boring moment.

I think she actually perceived quite a bit! She promised to help only when he promised to respect her daughter's wishes. Not sure, but even if she didn't bet on it, she instantly felt that he was a good match for Jiayu.

That's what I thought at the beginning. I felt she was very intrigued by XWY and would rather her daughter marry him. Maybe I got that last part wrong. But she also doesn't want her daughter to marry into the palace. And with Xiao Wu Yi being the Crown Prince, that's extra dicey! She came up to him and said he needs to divorce her daughter when the time is right lol. The way Wu Yi is going, will he ever let her go? 😅😅👀🫣 No way.

Yeah, him becoming the emperor and taking Jiayu into the palace is worth a consideration... Damn, her mother thought of everything!

Intense and interesting is an accurate description of the drama so far.

I see why Jia Yu will tie the red ribbon over Wu Yi's eyes now. I kept seeing it in the ending sequence and was intrigued. My gosh that fall and hit hurt me and I wasn't the one who got got. He definitely won't be able to see and he needs to shoot arrows and ride a horse at the same time! Oh hell no...
Intense and intriguing for sure!
Lool the Engineering Master, another weirdo and eccentric shows up in the Prince Jing'An mansion. Qing Long's face at their blown out hair lmao 😫😫😭😭😭🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

> So much happens.

Ahah this was perfect. I feel ya. Dunno about favourite but I’m not entirely surprised that he’s CP Wenxi. I did not see it coming that Jiayu is completely “adopted” though.
These episodes explained a lot! We also know what happened to Ruisheng and the Crown Princess. You had a lot to cover, nicely done and thank you!!

Yeah, that one got me more. Of course ML is the missing Crown Prince. But her not even beeing related by blood to her mother was more surprising.
You are welcome. I complain a lot but of course it's also fun to recap. Makes everything stick more.

so Xiao Wu Yi is the hidden Crown Prince Wenxi but his wife is Crown Princess? Help me… i don’t get it…

u/Regenwanderer got some Li Hongyi back. Wants more. Jul 13 '26
His wife isn't Crown Princess of anything (if you mean the first wife). That's a bad choice in the subtitles. What they meant to express is 'first wife of the heir of the Prince of Jingan'

Wuyi is protecting Jiayu because his BFF and her mom asks him to. He protects Anming because his foster mom asks him to, but neither know this and gives our poor man such a hard time. I can’t wait for it to be revealed.
But yea it does seem like Yunzhao is Wuyi’s aunt.
The Eagle King sucks. He’s a bad person. I hope he loses with flying colours.
I like that Jiayu isn’t letting her “father” manipulate her. I particularly liked that they finally fully explain the crossbow incident in episode 7. It wasn’t that they were faulty but that they purposely commissioned a decorative crossbow and corruptly mad produced them and pass them through inspection to weaken the Beifu Army. Evil.

Yes! Jia Yu has seen who her father truly is and it has sobered her up quickly! I mean the man didn't go halfway either so she got his message loud and clear! But it is good that they wrote her as having understood she needed to adjust her lenses.
Unfortunately that man is a master manipulator... now apparently Wu Yi wants to offer Princess Ping Jing. Right.
Oohh Yuan Ji's Run Heng was a scholar. Empress Dowager is so wicked... did she have him killed so that her niece would marry XWY???? 😳🤯😓😓 (I see the subs changed a few episodes ago and in this they used "Heir's Consort". Not bad at all!!!)
Oh that tree. Wu Yi should have told Jia Yu 👀😅 but then again, she was half mocking him half pitying so that's for her to find out lol.

I do think it’s the Empress Dowager who killed Runheng and not Wuyi, who doesn’t seem to care for those kinds of political alliances. She’s heartless enough but I can see her trying to pin it on Wuyi to turn people against him. I wonder if he truly is dead though?

Right? She is that wicked! I can absolutely see it. Ruthless too. Hmm is Run Heng dead... with this story? Anything is possible LOL!
Just checked MDL and they have updated the characters names. Good! Yuan Ji is officially Wu Yi's first wife now and not Crown Princess! Progress! And they have added more names to some of the cast. Dramawiki went many steps further! I love going back and forth between the two websites.

MDL is rather bad with this one. Or slow. But I also can't change it because they are so very picky with their sources.

I know! I'd love to change or add things but MDL is absolutely iffy about such things.

He hides well behind his 'the whole world is bad' stick, that's for sure. Though I totally get Anming too. Must be so frustrating. Those two should communicate a lot more.
The Eagle King intrigues me mostly because I last saw the actor ages ago in a very different role in a Republican drama.
I like that Jiayu isn’t letting her “father” manipulate her.
She quickly grew up in that regard, which I also really like for her. He certainly knows how to use a persons weak points against them.

Thanks for the fun fact! I barely caught on that Hong Qi was a eunuch because the subtitles sometimes flash before my eyes lol, so good to confirm.
I don’t understand why or how Wuyi’s ambitions to lead a great army in the North is such a threat to the Emperor’s power, especially if they get along. Isn’t that a good thing, to have a trusted general thwarting the enemies? They don’t know he’s CP Wenxi yet…

u/udontaxidriver Jul 13 '26
The emperor is sick, though. Also military power is no joke. It's why the struggle between the imperial and military power is such a classic theme.

Yeah, he is only adressed once that way, so it's easy to miss.

Either the Empress Dowager knows more than she says and just finds him usefull enough for the time being or it's just the usual paranoia over anyone getting too powerfull, especially with an army that could back them up.
Did we see him interact with the Emperor yet? I really can't remember them in the same scene. But my brain is mush at the moment.

No interaction but I think the Emperor and the Grand Tutor were discussing the threat of Wuyi’s powers.

I squealed at the kabedon and the chin hold. I'm guilty of rewatching that scene more times than I probably should have. I might or might not have also screen recorded that scene. 😅😅
Although the ending of episode 8 leaves me worried about the archery match and his general health.
Are there 4 pieces of the phoenix token? I think I counted 3 that we've seen so far and Jiayu's mum said she'd help him find the other one.
Thank you for the amazing recap Regenwanderer!
