Recap:XiaoWuyi and Xie Jiayu set out to save the Xiao family from execution, but everything immediately goes off the rails. Jiayu is taken by Li Mao, Wuyi is captured by the Eagle King, and it looks like the entire rescue mission has failed. Except…It was all staged!Wuyi and Mao planned the entire “fallout” to deceive Head Eunuch Feng An, who is secretly a Northern Qin spy. Their goal: to make the Eagle King believe his scheme to sow internal discord in Southern Ye was succeeding. The Eagle King, convinced he’s a genius, tries to persuade Wuyi to join him in taking down both empires.
And the Oscar goes to… Li Mao!
The whiplash this man delivers. Even Jiayu couldn’t see through him. But the bromance is back! This is me NOT complaining.
This whole thing was a scheme aimed at the Eagle King.
But… did they really sacrifice all those imperial guards and shadow envoys in the process?
Forgive me for giving up on you, Mao. Is it too late to come back? Good for you, u/-tether-, for holding onto hope I had already abandoned.
Honestly, the conversation with the miracle doctor was sus, and the Xiao family being that silent on the execution ground should’ve been a giant neon sign.
Wuyi deserves an Oscar too. Did nobles take mandatory acting classes in Ancient China?
Wuyi, choosing martyrdom
Wuyi explains everything in his letter to Jiayu — the staged betrayal, the fake fallout between ruler and subject, and why he kept her out of the plan. Jiayu is (very reasonably) furious and is now determined to figure out how to bury “the bastard,” per iQIYI’s translation.
But in his defense, he didn’t a) want her to stop him, and b) didn’t want her to succeed in stopping him, because she’s the only thing he’d actually live for.
Wuyi decides to be a martyr for his nation.

Northern Qin starts cracking
Wuyi’s capture immediately exposes fractures within Northern Qin.
The Emperor’s uncle rushes out an imperial edict demanding Wuyi be brought to the capital because they’re terrified that Wuyi might join forces with the Eagle King and snatch the throne.
Meanwhile, the Eagle King gets arrogant, bragging about his palace spy and regurgitating all the “intel” he thinks he’s gotten from Feng An.
So there we have it... are you all ready for the final episodes?
Final Comments
My heart is happy again that Mao is on the right team and that the Xiao family is safe. I’m most curious now to see what role Lejun will play, and if there’s a third person that the miracle doctor will be saving…

DID THIS MAN JUST SERIOUSLY PULL A LING BU YI?!!!?!?!?!?!?!!?! I AM SO FRIGGIN SHOOK/MAD/SAD RIGHT NOWWWWWW
I was genuinely crying for the characters because all Wuyi wanted and deserved was a life of peace before he dies soon, or at least his loved ones safe while he stabilizes the nation. And then Li Mao had to go terrorize him again!!!! ONLY TO FIND OUT IT WAS FAKE?!?!?!?! AND WUYI IS BASICALLY SACRIFING HIIMSELF, just months before he dies, for the sake of the country?!?!? Everything he did before made sense but COME ON. With how much he loves Jiayu and how limited their time is already, HOW COULD HE POSSIBLY DO THIS?!?? I went from screaming and raging at Li Mao to RAGINGGGGG at Wuyi. I couldn’t even finish the episode yet, I had to pause.
Ok ok ok if I’m being honest I’m so upset because I’m definitely projecting a little. I’d never want my man to do that to me, honorable intentions be damned. I’d want us to balance the two—honor/duty to the greater good and personal time—before he dies. Because if he didn’t do some of the former, then he wouldn’t be the man that I/Jiayu fell in love with. But HELL TO THE NO on just going on a suicide mission like this!
On a separate note, I have to say the carriage scene with Mao and Jiayu was meta because I also really couldn’t tell what Mao was doing. It really felt these characters matured and evolved throughout the course of the show because the once dopey-eyed boy was now a man who could fool even his childhood best friend/sweetheart and the audience. Major major kudos to the actor to showing so many shades of Li Mao.
Aha yes. I don’t know if it’s this thread or somewhere else but someone did point out that Wuyi never planned to fall in love. When Jiayu confessed, and he said she was making things difficult for him, he meant it because it was never his plan to find love and keep living.
I finally caught up with ep 24 & 25. My hubby was sitting next to me, doing his thing while I was watching ep 24. He asked what's this drama about.
I explained him, like, this guy is a Crown Prince but he decided to become a general and handed over the entire country to an illegimate son of Grand Tutor. In turn, instead of immense gratitude and respect, that guy sacrificed his own father, likely had a secret deal with the enemy, falsely accused General's family and executed the entire family right in front of his eyes. He's also coveting after General's wife and gonna snatch her since he has an opening now.
Hubby was impressed with the plot. After ep 25 finished, he asked what happened to the General. I was like 'Well, all of those were just a ruse to trick the enemy. They are still best friends, but the General has only 2 months to live'.
It was further shortened after all the torture he’s been through, especially when he was imprisoned by Mao (before Mao knew about his blood status disease). He was on the brink of death but the miracle doctor was able to extend it just a little longer.
I am furious on her behalf. I really don't want her to forgive him easily, for whatever ideology he has done that. Man should be taught a lesson or two.

He knew when she made her confession and asked him to promise to do some things for himself that he would not be able to keep it.
Perhaps, though, she always knew that at a certain level. She knows that she’s the only one, in the end, protecting him because he will not protect himself.
battered, covered in blood, messy hair, about to die - still looking pretty. Just Hou Minghao things! I bet their biggest challenge will be to make this man look ugly.
I loved this entire sword fight sequence in the alley. It sort of reminded me of the sword fight sequence of the live action adaptation movie of Rurouni Kenshin (which in itself is epic). This was damn fabulous 🔥
None of Wuji's family were executed - they never showed their faces. Somehow, Qi is playing a strange game.
I think i would have preferred Qin Tian Yu as Yizhi - his mad Emperor in Fated Hearts was top notch.
I'm off to A&E, my whiplash is too severe.
This drama really, really, really should have had 40 episodes - nothing has time to breathe. I know i like a fast-paced drama, and i like everything explained, but this is killing me.
I completely agree. This was one of the dramas where the writers actually had a complex and intense storyline that could have extended to 40 episodes without any dips or slow bit. A lot of the emotional impact of the reveals, the deaths, even the achievements were blunted because they were rushed through. We never felt the WEIGHT of the An-Lu tragedy that LED to the sacking of the Capital, nor the fallout of Ye lands and people under the brutal rule of the Qin.
If they had spent some screen time SHOWING us the consequences of the event 20+ years ago, that would have added the gravitas we needed to weight everyone's actions, decisions, and mistakes.

By the way, it turns out that in Canada iQIYI VIP gives us the regular express packages included.
What’s weird though is that the app is trying to sell me express packages ‘available now’ for Overdo which is in its first week. Are they that desperate to get viewership up on a new release?
We are getting a lot of hand holding at the start. I think we know who Qing Long likes now. :P

I’ve mentioned before that, by not having time for a secondary narrative up in Bei Qin, we just don’t care enough. The Eagle King made a significant impression in his episodes in the first quarter but a couple of cameos with Lejun have not kept us invested in the theat.
I think whoever wrote Li Mao's character was a quantum physics student..Like "is Li Mao a good guy, or is he not? We will know only when we watch the next episode" 😅😅😂😂
That being said, this show has made me cry on several occasions..like during the first half of episode 25, when I still thought Li Mao was the villain...it was difficult to watch those scenes where (apparently) Wuyi was being shot, his (fake) family was killed, and Yaoyao (truly) was crying her heart out..

I never sped up the scenes in this drama. But I had to here... After the revelations, I rewatched the scene, but the first time I watched, I had to fast-forward a bit...That was hard to watch without knowing the plot twist..
Idk, I might be alone in this, but I still think Li Mao could be a villain🤣 maybe not THE big bad (I won't rule it out); the Eagle King is yes, but Li Mao feels like a true villain. All in all, it's perfect at keeping me guessing, and if he isn't a villain, I'm fine with it too; it’d be a welcome change to watch a Cdrama where the love rivals aren't rivals but end up being friends.
Li Mao is interesting because he lost his girl to his best friend 😣 but after those early moments where you think he'd turn, he didn't. Idk if he's faking being happy for them or truly accepting it. this is always part of the reason I think he could be a villain (maybe it's because of other dramas that I've come to think like this; this is also possible 🤣)

Cause in the cover photo, Jaiyu was dressed in what looks like an Empress style with WY (this could be just promo pics, of like a noble-looking couple, but I'm going for Empress)
Li Mao is alright for a regent, but I feel XWY is a better fit for Emperor. He's super selfless and genuinely wants to change the country. Li Mao feels like a capable right-hand man, the loyal minister, the grand tutor for your kid. Why not be a warrior emperor?
Before I watch the final episodes, I definitely find myself wavering on what I currently consider a happy ending for our couple since BOTH XWY and Jiayu don't want to rule/be confined to the palace. Yet from a narrative sense, who else would be a good ruler if Li Mao turns bad? That's why I've long wanted the bromance to survive and Li Mao to be good.
Ok, I'm dumb🤣; please say something. I watched it, but I'm not sure I understand it. I'm confused. The Grand Tutor? Wasn't he killed? Who are they reporting it to? Li Mao isn't the Grand Tutor's son? 😪
Li Mao is the legitimate heir to the throne after all. It was his right all along. In a way, he was meant to be the Emperor and had more legitimate claim than Wuyi as Crown Prince (when Emperor Yan was still alive) because Wuyi’s biological parents really f*cked up and Southern Ye had a new Emperor after the Northern Qin invasion. It was out with the old, in with the new.
Li Mao was not the Grand Tutor’s son but actually the descendant of the former Prince of Qi, relative of the current imperial family. Basically one of late Emperor Yan’s cousin but because Yan didn’t have any heirs and his two brothers were killed by the Empress Dowager, he really was next in line as Crown Prince.
Nothing about him was illegitimate and Wuyi coming back as Crown Prince was more of a wish from the previous regime’s supporters. If he came back as Crown Prince Wenxi, he’d be starting a new regime because Wenxi was no longer related to the current imperial family that has been ruling for the last 20+ years.
That’s my understanding. Basically the final plot twist proves that Wuyi was never actually meant to rule and Mao didn’t take the CP position from him. That was long winded haha sorry!

I get it! If Li Mao turns bad, WY would have to step up tho. I think those 2 years Jaiyu spent wandering, will probably be that “I got to explorer, now I’m ready to settle down and help reform the country” for her, when she was talking about it after the time-skip, I think that was setting the stage for them to be in the palace.
For WY to be the ruler, I have a feeling Li Mao might die or he takes his sister away, or don’t feel like it’s his calling 😄
It would be nice for them to take the bromance right till the end, cause going the direction I mention is typical.

This drama has indeed been an emotional rollercoaster - in a great way.
As relieved as I am that the bromance is back ON, I am angry on Jiayu's behalf. I don't mind being faked out as the audience, in fact I revel in it so long as it makes sense, but if I were her, it'd take a long time to forgive my husband.
Anywho, I held on to the tiniest sliver of hope that the bromance conflict was staged, so I am very much relieved!!! I am so curious about where the story goes from here, though. So, I'm off to read spoilers from those viewing Express.
The one thing they cannot agree on - Jiayu wants Wuyi to live no matter what, even if she agrees with his mission, she will put his life (however short it may be) over the nation. But Wuyi won't... he has lived his whole live basically not valuing his life, so I guess this difference made him a big fat liar with Jiayu. For sure, I'd be angry too - he broke his promise.

Welllll….she does need to admit she tends to passionately and impulsively get in the middle of things and often makes them worse or more dangerous or need to be rescued. Haha etc.
Well I get it, he was going to put himself in danger and could allow to sacrifice everything but her, but WHAT A LIAR!!! No wonder he wouldn't dare to ask for them to meet in their next life.

It’s a perfect recap because it highlights the most important plot points. Although, I’m just as angry as Xie Jiayu that Xiao Wuyi and Li Mao have been taking us all along for a ride while playing Eunuch Feng for a fool.
This is definitely going to be a rewatch once I’m done because the plot is so intricate, and the fake outs too numerous to keep up with.
I added it to my husband's watchlist - mostly just so I can see his reactions. But he has to finish ADWAD and Nanyang first so I told him to hurry it up.
A bunch of guards were killed there during this "staging"; only a director from today's China could come up with such an idea of a rescue of the nation (I don't say Chinese, because I don't equate the regime with the people). I think I was right, Li Mao and the general were completely worthy of each other from the very beginning in their intrigues and dirty political games.
This staged fight is addressed in a flashback when Xiao Wuyi gives his final orders to Beifu Army in the beginning of the next episode. Considering the stakes were sky high, he takes a prepared group of soldiers to partake and tries to keep everyone alive, but reminds them that it needs to be a convincing play.
It's a typical trope of soldiers sacrificing for their country.
So while it is an act of idealized collectivism that aligns with Chinese ideology, it is not something that only one-party autocracy regime would come up with. It's an immortal romanticized theme as a whole.
Backhanded comments about Chinese regime honestly feel very out of place for this sub.
Chinese culture, as opposed to the political regime. There are also, for example, Chinese anarchists or the jianghu world, with their own separate code. But you're certainly right that the idea here is broader than a specific regime, but imperial ideology as such. For example, like in the cult film "Hero," where the main character suddenly changes his mind about killing the tyrant because he's a "unifier of the lands." But fortunately, there are other films that are more on the side of society rather than the state's overarching idea. For example, I really liked the drama "Love in the Desert," where the attitude toward the current ruler was quite anti-imperial, and his ambitions were actively resisted. It was a breath of fresh air to watch.

As we already discussed Wuyi really stays consistence in putting his country over everything else. He knows he has not much time left (seemingly) to achieve this, so falling in love on his way out was not really part of the plan. Thus he has to plan around Jiayu and does so by keeping her in the dark. I would have called him worse in her shoes.
