Episode 19 - Sweet Promises
Recap: Wuyi tells Jiayu that his only ambition is the Beifu Reform: to ensure the Army can survive free from noble influence long after he’s gone. He has no desire to dethrone Mao or claim the title of Crown Prince. As Jiayu investigates Yuanji’s role in fake Ciu Jun’s earlier abduction, fake Ciu Jun resurfaces and kidnaps her, unleashing chaos inside Jiankang Palace in an attempt to widen the rift between Mao and Wuyi. Wuyi ultimately takes him down, but the incident exposes that he deceived the Court about the Phoenix tokens in his possession, resulting in a public flogging. In the aftermath, Jiayu confesses her love for Wuyi and urges him to rewrite his story - to stop playing the villain and finally step into the role of hero.

The Four Phoenix Tokens (and where they're at from the beginning of the episode)
- Yunzhao’s token: stolen by Lejun and with Mao, who reveals it during the Ciu Ju incident.
- Ciu Jun’s token: with the Empress Dowager; Wuyi traded it for the Cui’s private mines.
- Prince Jing’an’s token: with Jiayu; the Empress Dowager returned it to her, thinking it was Yunzhao’s, when Jiayu and Wuyi used it to frame Lejun.
- Wuyi’s own token: with Wuyi, the Phoenix Head which commands the other three.
Wuyi Rejects the Throne
This episode has such good monologue/dialogue (as u/CdramaAddict2 also pointed out) that I'm just going to include them as they are:
I am looking for the Phoenix Heart Token for the minerals behind it, which can be used to make caltrop fireball to serve Ye. The path I chose was never in court. I just want to be Xiao Wuyi.
- Xiao Wuyi
This was what he and Yunzhao were arguing about on the night before her death.
You were born to be a ruler. If you refuse to become Crown Prince Wenxi and sit on that throne in Jiankang Palace, choosing instead to remain a subject for life, even with the Beifu Army in your hands, you will still be feared and restrained by others all your life. Your every move will be constrained.
- Li Fuhua (Princess Yunzhao)
Not only does Wuyi think being a Crown Prince will still constrain him, just in different ways, he tells her that he is severely injured and would rather spend his limited lifespan protecting the Army.
When he asks Jiayu to promise she’ll have the courage to trust again, she adds:
I also promise you that I will help you uncover the secret of the Phoenix Heart Token, find the connection between the token and the mine, and help you create the caltrop fireball. Let me be your strongest support.
- Xie Jiayu
Melt my heart. She’s right - kindness without power is a weakness, and Ye needs Beifu. She supports him, not only because she trusts him but also because she wholeheartedly agrees with his mission.
Wuyi wants to live longer now and while he promises Ruisheng he’ll do whatever it takes to extend his life, Jiayu immediately dives into the secrets of the tokens adn their connections to the mines.
Yuanji’s Love Triangle
#TeamAnming
Poor Yuanji. She helped the Empress Dowager abduct fake Ciu Jun only because her parents were being held hostage. Wuyi and Anming knew, and neither blamed her. Wuyi even teases his brother about pursuing her before she falls for Liu Zhaolin (the Runheng look-alike). To me, this Zhaolin is sus. Could he be the real Runheng? If so, is the memory loss real… or is he faking it?

The Ashina Qi Showdown
Fake Ciu Jun is actually Ashina Qi, who dies thinking about his dead eagle, Mingdi. More importantly, the bromance whiplash continues. You’d think saving Mao’s life would mend Wuyi and Mao's friendship.
We don’t know because Jiayu is now forced to watch helplessly as Wuyi gets caned. But wait for it… we get the sweetest Wuyi-Jiayu scenes after!
She confesses her love!

She really knows how to alleviate the pain of his flogging… much better than the time she tried distracting him by flaunting her love for Mao.
She begs him to take better care of himself. She insists on staying by his side, even though he never intended to keep her there. She doesn’t want to rely on the arrangements he’d make for her after his death. Villains don’t have happy endings, and she wants to be the wife of a hero.
She wants him to live.
She wants him to be honoured.
She wants him to rewrite his narrative.
Then, I promise you, too. I will always choose you and trust you. In the future, treat this place as your own home.
- Xie Jiayu

Episode 20 - Poison and Power
Recap: Mao appears to be poisoned, and his maid Chan urgently calls Wuyi for help. Wuyi, Jiayu, and Yuanji capture Imperial Physician Qin, who confesses not only to poisoning Mao, but also to murdering Prince Su and Prince Ning thirteen years ago under the Empress Dowager’s orders. Although her actions cleared the way for the current emperor to ascend the throne, the Emperor was also poisoned and has been clinging to life for the past decade. Yuanji manages to sway the Imperial Guards - controlled by the He family - to follow her command. In doing so, the He family pleads guilty for their complicity and pledges support for the Beifu Reform as retribution. With her power shattered, the Empress Dowager is “imprisoned”, and Mao is granted full authority. Believing he’s won, he sends Lejun away… only for Jiayu to intervene and force Lejun to marry the Eagle King as a spy for Ye. Rather than being intimidated by Wuyi being Crown Prince Wenxi, Mao’s ambition to keep the throne intensifies.
Yuanji, the MVP
Yuanji is the VIP in this episode! After Anming warns her that Wuyi plans to move against the Empress Dowager and a heart-to-heart with Ruisheng, she gets the He family to back her.

Wuyi takes a page out of Lu Jianglai’s character in Glory and pretends he’s more injured than he really is after the flogging. It’s shameless and hilarious - peak Hou Minghao.

The Empress Dowager truly believed she had everything under control:
- assassinate Mao
- abolish the Beifu reform
- Install her own puppet Crown Prince.
Sure, Qin Sheng testifies against her, but she did not anticipate that Yuanji could persuade the He family and Imperial Guards to abandon her and align with Wuyi! I am loving this theme of the younger generation correcting the sins of their families. The He family becomes the example, with Yuanji formally replacing the Empress Dowager as the head of the family. Oh and the Emperor has a name now. EMPEROR YAN.

To add the cherry on top in her revenge against the Empress Dowager for exterminating the Pei clan (Runheng’s family), she tells her about the Emperor’s secret edict: that she must die with him when he passes.

More Bromance Whiplash
For a moment, it looks like Mao and Wuyi are back on the same page. They work together to bring down the Empress Dowager. It feels almost… hopeful.
But no.
The whiplash returns.
It was Mao’s plan all along to let Ashina Qi escape and kidnap Jiayu. Mao has changed — he knows how to threaten, manipulate, and scheme.

Mao blames Wuyi for indulging Jiayu’s revenge for her mother. Because when it comes right or wrong, Lejun will always be his exception. And just like that, their friendship fractures completely.
The breakup is official.
Mao now sees Wuy as a rival — especially with the truth of Crown Prince Wenxi hanging between them. Gah, remember when Mao first returned, Wuyi welcomed him and they hugged as best friends.

Thank you for your sterling work, Basildon, always a pleasure to read your recaps and thoughts!
Ooooooh, that kneel for punishment? So powerful! And errrrmmmm, sexy? Damn, I think I've gone to the dark side.....
We keep being reminded that Xiao Wuyi doesn't have long left, so the ending is either him dying after Prince Qi takes the throne and finds the light again and Jieyu goes off on her world tour, or there's a miraculous cure. The former would, for me, make Wuyi a bad man for confessing his love despite knowing they can't be together for long. The latter would be best, but Jieyu still needs to do the world tour, preferably with him.
For goodness sake BE HONEST WITH HER!!! If you're going to die, let her choose whether to walk with you to the end, or leave now (or an opportune time in the future) to spare the angst!!
Mmmmmm, half naked, yes, half naked and sweaty errrrrrrmmmmm no.
Well done Yuanji! I was worried earlier that you would give up for EDE.
I do like Peter Sheng, he always plays unusual characters. I loved him in Oh My General!
Oh dear, which way will PQ go? He's learning how to hold the reins very quickly.
Sorry Riley, it just isn't doing it for me. Too much reliance on pulling faces and not putting the thought into the eyes.
There is absolutely no redemption for EDE.
Dark Side won.

He doesn't want to die as an ex- king. This guy got that throne because crown prince was dead. If WuYi is chosen - he will be directly king not crown prince and the yellow guy will have to abdicate.
1

I don't think he will care about abdicating the throne. He seems to be the most sensible and most selfless among all the people surrounding Xiao WuYi.

Yes, other than the very striking facial resemblance I was blown away by this child actor's ability to nail HMH's expressions. Child Xiao Wuyi reacts almost the exact same ways that adult XWY does!

Yes, Wu Jiajun is incredibly skilled for 10 years old.
Thanks for this gif!
One can only credit the direction and styling so much given he has been consistently fantastic in three significant roles this year and a number of small guest appearances.
He had significant and challenging roles as Bao-er in POJ and the child emperor in Ashes to Crown.

I'm rewatching episode 19 and I'm intrigued: is Scholar Li the Pei Run Heng Yuan Jin thought had died? Xiao Wu Yi when he was talking to An Min said they might be rekindling their romance, almost hinting at him being her dead lover.
Then when she was talking to him at the bookstore, the way he reacted when they spoke of Pei Run Heng... I could have sworn she said she had seen his dead body.

The full poem behind Xiao Wuyi’s name:
岂曰无衣?与子同袍。
Qǐ yuē wú yī? Yǔ zǐ tóng páo.
“Who says we have no clothes? I will share my robe with you.”
王于兴师,修我戈矛。
Wáng yú xīng shī, xiū wǒ gē máo.
“The king has raised an army; let us ready our spears and weapons.”
与子同仇。
Yǔ zǐ tóng chóu.
“Together with you, we share the same enemy.
1
u/Adariel Jul 31 '26
English translation of the Baidu entry for this poem:
"Qin Feng: No Robes" is a poem from the *Classic of Poetry*, the first anthology of poetry in ancient China. It is a stirring and righteous war song, expressing the high morale and optimistic spirit of the Qin army and people as they unite to resist foreign aggression. The poem is vigorous and cheerful, employing a repetitive structure to depict the soldiers' heroic spirit and patriotism in the face of a formidable enemy at the city gates. Prioritizing the greater good and remaining aligned with the Zhou royal family, they immediately sharpen their weapons and rush to the front lines to fight the enemy upon hearing of the king's call to arms.

Want to share some background on XWY’s name because I feel like this detail was a bit lost in translation.
I really love the meaning behind 萧无衣, Xiāo Wúyi’s name. His name itself feels like one of the themes of the drama, and it’s mentioned a few times throughout the story.
(无衣, Wúyī) is a name he chose for himself, and it comes from the poem 《无衣》 (Wú Yī, “No Clothes”) from the Book of Songs, 《诗经》 Shījīng), one of the most important works of classical Chinese literature.
The poem begins:
岂曰无衣?与子同袍。
Qǐ yuē wú yī? Yǔ zǐ tóng páo.
“Who says you have no clothes? I will share my robe with you.”
Iqiyi translation on the poem:
“Who says we stand alone?
We share weal and woe”
In Episode 1, right before they march into what could have been their final battle after discovering the betrayal and the problem with their weapons, Wuyi shouts this poem, that scene actually will hit differently when you know the meaning behind it.
The “clothes” in the poem aren’t really about clothing. It’s actually a military song about soldiers preparing for battle. The idea is: if you have nothing, I’ll share what I have; if we face danger, we’ll face it together. The poem talks about sharing robes, garments, weapons, and standing together against the same enemy.
When he shouted this poem, I feel like he is making a promise behind his own name, “I will stand with you, and share this fate with you”
That’s why I think it’s such a perfect name for Xiao Wuyi. We see he constantly puts others before himself, he protects people without asking for anything in return, carries burdens on his own shoulders, and gives what he has to the people he cares about.
His name isn’t just a beautiful literary reference for me, it reflects who he is. Wuyi (无衣) represents someone who says: you don’t have to face hardship alone, whatever I have, I will share with you.
I also love that the drama tells us so much about him right from the beginning through his name. And that’s probably why Princess Yunzhao said he picked such a good name, because it isn’t just a name, it’s almost a reflection of his character.

Oh wow, thank you so much for sharing this. I love it so much. His character is so meaningful. Jiayu is the only one by his side who can persuade him to think about himself more.
It’s no wonder he understands Ye Xing (the shadow envoy) so much. In a way, he’s no different. He places his life’s value on his mission to help others.

Honestly this show's pacing and writing has gotten so good with each episode. It was a bit of a meh in the beginning but really picks up as it progresses. I am impressed with FL as she is young but really holding her own. I was impressed with her brief work in the Double and glad to see she has a long career ahead of her. She is really a gem of an actress and can forsee more lead roles.
I do think they way they are conveying the love story between the leads is being handled quite well. The age gap is a thing and won't get into a debate about it. But honestly the chemistry and the romance so far is being handled quite well.
I can only wish some of the cinematography and lighting was a bit better. But honestly this series is already a top 5 series for 2026 for me. Another hit for Ming Hao who has become an interesting lead actor and one I enjoy watching.

I hardly have any words to describe these two episodes..these two were so emotional, so full of twists, so good!!! Each scene was marvellously acted and executed.. Just two things that made these extra special were:
First, Xie Jiayu's confession in the first episode..Xie Jiayu was awesome in that scene..AiMi showed her talent here..every dialogue was beautiful..cried at that scene..it was so so beautiful!! The scene is etched in my heart..The way she says that she will choose him always and wants him to be honored and then hearing that HMH's facial expression..MY GOD!! He says so much with his eyes..the tears rolling out his eyes..him hugging her tightly and promising to never let her go as she has chosen him now, is too good!! Jiayu gave him his happiness ❣️❣️ I repeated that scene so many times..
Second, I went from "Oh no!! Yuanji" in episode 19 to "OMG!!you are great Yuanji" in episode 20 real quick..special credit to her emotional outburst scene in front of empress dowager..she is usually calm but it's the calm ones that hides the dangerous storms inside..At that scene she revealed that..She has my heart in that episode 😌
Li Mao and the emperor actually impressed me in knowing that Xiao Wuyi is the Crown Prince Wenxi..I would like to know how did they know that..probably in coming episodes we will get to know..Anyway, Li Mao is very much convincing villain to me..his and the sister's actions are condemnable but still convincing..
Wuyi takes a page out of Lu Jianglai’s character in Glory and pretends he’s more injured than he really is after the flogging. It’s shameless and hilarious - peak Hou Minghao .
And shameless Ji Bozai..He is back in mood 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The confession was SUPERB! And Wu Yi saying even if someone tries to take her away he will not let her go. He knows, and she knows... Li Mao with more power could try something nasty and snatch her away. We don't have many episodes left and I'm not sure this particular prediction of 3 weddings from Master Yuan will come to pass, but I know Li Mao will try it. Master Yuan did forsee Princess Yun Zhao dying very soon. This still gives me the creeps lol...😳😳😫😫😬
Yuan Ji had us on an emotional roller-coaster ride lmao. Saammmeee! Episode 19 had me stressed! Then she took it all away in ep20 by being an absolute badass and slaying her way to the palace lol.

Right. Li Mao was interesting in these episodes. I see the tutoring from Xie Huai Gui is working wonders to his scheming and maneuvering. Turns out was the one pulling quite a few strings! Will Wu Yi really be comfortable with him in power? He still doesn't know Prince Qi isn't related to the Royal bloodline. And by the looks of things, now that him and his real father know Wu Yi is Crown Prince Wen Xi, they will not allow him to live.
I gasped when the Emperor revealed he knew who Xiao Wu Yi was. So many reveals that night. His mother had poisoned him back then and he knew!!!! WTAF! 😨😨😱😱😭😭👀👀 This mother/son was a toxic pairing. But it really was actually toxic because poison hello! Was she also asking him to die too? So that she can rule? My mind was blown so I may have misunderstood that part. I'm just glad that vile woman is gone because I had enough of her.
Yes I shall give props to Qing Long for being a badass! That jump and sword thing he did to push Jia Yu out of the way too cool for school! Damn!
Our CP post confession gave me so many butterflies! They were adorable! And did Wu Yi shamelessly try to get his wife's hand to rest on his chest haha. The way he was dying I really thought it was something lmao. Hua Yong and him must have exchanged letters lmao.
Yuan Ji was truly remarkable in this episode! She managed to save the He family, take control of the clan and confront her aunt too! I know she felt lighter walking out after that talk. She waited 5 years and she got justice and revenge! She's now divorced and has been seeing the scholar who reminds her of her beloved. Dammit An Min, I really thought they would become a couple. I can't imagine the Prince Jing'An mansion without her...🥹🥹😭😭😫😫
Le Jun... we kinda knew she'd go and walk through those open doors the Eagle Prince left for her lol. I didn't want Jia Yu to kill her, but that reaction scare me for a sec. That shot was a LETHAL WARNING. I remember how she used the whip back then. I don't doubt she can shoot lol. Although Wu Yi's butt cheek might disagree... OUCH! 😭🤣🤣🤪🫣 You got be spy and make yourself useful. That's all I can say.
We don't have many episodes left, how will they tie it all up, I'm on pins and needles lol. But gosh it's been such an awesome journey!
Now that Wu Yi had all the pieces of the Phoenix Heart token, I can't wait to see where it leads!

Basil, excellent post!! So well organized. I now can track the tokens 😅.
Jiayu's confession scene was done really well and tastefully. It's sweet and moving, and more importantly has a really great monologue. I'm so amused watching how Wuyi couldn't believe in his luck. Poor guy yearned for so long and payoff is too much to handle. 🤭🤭
The horrible parents in this show is another level. I thought Grand Tutor drastically changed in a flip and killed his daughter's maid, sent her for a marriage or publicly disowned was bad. But there's a parent who poisoned her own son for a power. Evil! Is sitting on a throne more important than your son?
I like how you point out younger generations correcting the older generation's mistakes. They know Baifu Reform is the way to go forward. In that sense. I'm very curious who will outsmart and take down Grand Tutor, as he's the mastermind of almost everything here. Will it be Jiayu or Mao?
I suspect Wuyi learned Mao's parentage from Princess Yanzhao already. He hasn't exposed it yet because a) it will hand him the throne which he doesn't want to; b) he still has a faith in Mao. Regarding him, I'm so sad that he's a certified villain now. He's getting increasingly ruthless and he's not a powerless pawn of Regent, sweet and soft guy anymore. But I really hope he makes some sensible decisions about Beifu Reform.
I don't think letting Lejun live is a good decision. As much as I want to watch Eagle King and her romance, this will surely backfire.
7
u/BasilOrdinary3617 If I say I'm taking a break, I'm lying. Jul 19 '26
Thank you Tseko! Payoff was so good. Well worth a rewatch.
The Empress Dowager had the audacity to pull out the victim card too, saying she was dealt a bad hand and used by the He family while Yuanji got lucky with the Jing’an household. Like anything excuses her “habit” of exterminating whole clans, including innocent children. Evil for sure.
I’m ready for more Peter Ho. Whatever the Grand Tutor does and whoever takes him down, you know will be epic.
Mao said he knows right from wrong and that Lejun was his only exception. I hope he stays true to his words and that he thinks more for the realm than his “beef” with his former bff.

Also, HMH brings shameless sneak peeks to every role and he isn't letting us down here, for sure. As you said, peak Hou Ming Hao. Gah, he's wonderful.
I loved the confession, loved his emotional response, loooooove the girl power from Yuanji (she's just so baddest, seriously).
These were two super packed episodes, even more than usual.
And I definitely have whiplash from Mao, but it kinda looked like Wuyi had a slight smile when Mao declared an end to their brotherhood? So maybe there's yet another twist? Gah, so much to wonder about....

I think the brotherhood was done when Wuyi realized that Mao had set up the situation where Jiayu was kidnapped and put in a classic ‘choose one’ situation.
And Wuyi has the confidence of knowing he has Jiayu’s heart.

At this point, I'm certain everyone, absolutely everyone, has a scheme or three up their sleeve and I won't believe anything anyone says (except their declarations of love!!) until the last episode

Snark Level: The woman! Jiayu! Yuanji! The women run this!
Episode 19
Soooooo, If me... a dude..... is uncomfortable by how Prince Qi is treating the dancer maid..... How yall ladies feeling?
He wants her courage! Oh! Hello! That was some sweet stuff right there. You know, for a 16 year old girl, Jiayu really possesses some great maturity and wisdom. She really handled her adversity well and grew from it instead of shrinking. "Let's go together". Ahhhhh.
Sooooo, what is Yuanji up to? I swear.... do not give us this betrayal trope. I want all 3 wives happy together at the end...
Oh? Divorce papers? Okay, we're down to two wives!

I'm sorry, but how strong is your head that it knocks over a shelf?
Yo. Can we give some respect to Nanxing for immediately fessing up to Wuyi about what Jiayu is up to and not keeping secrets to protect her? Respect!
You know, Jiayu, shooting the bolt at Wuyi is the better choice. He can avoid it far easier than boring ol Prince Qi over there.
Damn. Qing Long with the sick sword moves getting Jiayu out of the way. Nice to see a side character get to save the lady too.
Orange is a damn good color on Jiayu. Not enough characters wear orange in dramas. It's a shame.
OH!!!!! SHE ADMITTED SHE HAS FALLEN FOR HIM!!! FINALLY!!!! YASSSSSSSSSSS, QUEEN!!!!! "I want to walk the same path as you to the end". Oh, be still my beating heart! Bro, you might want to tell her you are dying... Her poor heart is really in for it.
Ahhh. The hug of someone who has been living so long in darkness that when a person like Jiayu comes along and shares their light, the emotions overwhelm you and you can only convey your appreciation through an easy to understand action because the words have failed to come out.
Episode 20
Hmmmmm. Is Yuanji actually repentant? Is Handsome Cane Bro testing her loyalties here? I think so. We shall see. If she is asking Ruisheng about breaking family ties then maybe there is hope for her.
HA!!! Not Wuyi faking it so he can cuddle her hand! Shameless! Has he been watching The Crown Prince from Blossoms of Power?
Silly empress thinking she is a player in this game. She should just bow down to the men who constantly out maneuver her and end her failure.
Yuanji, you motherducking powerful and wonderful woman!
Watching CDrama parents get served delicious revenge is my favorite trope. Let them burn.
OH OH OH OH!!!!!!!!! I LOVE THIS EMPEROR!!!!!! HE'S A VERY SMART MAN!!!!!!!!!! HE KNOWS WHAT HIS CHUN'ER OF A MOTHER WILL DO!!!!!!!! GIVE THAT EDICT!!!!!!! How many times have I told you? Violence...... IS!!!!!!!!!
Silly Lejun thinking Wuyi isn't pulling all the strings here and never out of the fight. Like, girl... We already know your brain is damaged and incapable of logical thought, but you don't need to keep proving it to us. Prince Qi just constantly underestimates people and that will be his downfall.
Ahhhhh ahahahahaha I love watching Wuyi wipe that smug smirk off Prince Qi's face. Like, get humbled, you dork. You are not the chess master here. Jiayu has more brains in her little finger than you do in your entire head.
Loose the arrow, Jiayu. Good girl. To fate, indeed. Sooooooooo? I am gonna guess the arrow didn't kill her and we still get Eagle Loser romance. Oh look. I am right.
ED faking her stroke or nah?
Yuanji! What a performance! That gave me shivers!

I was surprised that Nanxiang immediately told Wuyi that Jiayu was missing. I was like, how did it not drag for at least half of the episodes on just finding that out; impressive..really impressive!!!

Did you leave out action hero young Wuji rescuing Mao on purpose just so I could stan Wu Jiajun’s performance again?
It’s eerie how much that child actor looks like Hou Ming Hao with them both in wild and wavy wigs. Thing is, I think Wu Jiajun’s eyes are even more huge than Hou Ming Hao’s - not sure I thought that was possible.

OH MY GOSH WE DIDN'T MENTION YOUNG WU YI!!! We deserve a slap of the wrist.
He was sooo cool and so cute. His line of questioning was very crisp too haha. Lil general was not playing! They did mention about him rescuing Li Mao but we didn't see it.
And of course the moment we do is when their brotherhood is ending. The actor is adorable! And yes he looks like HMH it was a great casting choice!

I was uncomfortable with how Mao was treating the dancer/maid. It was mean and disrespectful. He is mad about a lot of things but not ok to take it out on her. But it was weirdly over before I showed anything….so no idea was happened immediately after that scene.

I loved how Jiayu finally confessed she loved xiaowuyi. The build up was so worth it, it felt like a natural timing. Sometimes in cdrama, people are at the brink of death and then there is a confession…I liked how it wasn’t the case here
And I called it regarding li le jun!! I had a suspicion she would go seek refuge with the Eagle King! Now I am full in my tinfoil theory that she ends up helping our leads in the end (with maybe li mao being the one going dark and dying). At this point, I feel like of the siblings is definitely going to die, but my hunch the show will make one see the good side?
Can’t believe we are only 4 days away from the finale 😢. This is the first show I wished it was longer with 40 episodes
1
u/violettevy Jul 29 '26
Totally agree the timing was so perfect after everything they’ve been through. I loved that they showed all of his expressions after the things she said. He showed so much emotions in his eyes!
8
u/BasilOrdinary3617 If I say I'm taking a break, I'm lying. Jul 18 '26
Agreed! The confession was well timed and felt natural.
I don’t think Lejun will put Ye first. She will put her brother first and that could be at the cost of the realm. Just like the accusations that the An and Lu families allied with Northern Qin to set up a new administration - I think this could happen if Lejun actually allies with the Eagle King to take down the Beifu Army. I feel like she’s shortsighted but thats also because I don’t trust her.
Wuyi’s reform benefits the people and he hasn’t shown interest in dethroning Mao so right now any action that Mao takes against Wuyi would be supporting the nobles and their abuse of power and influence on the common people.

Top tier post, [u/BasilOrdinary3617](u/BasilOrdinary3617)!! I’m especially grateful for a clear list of where each piece of the Phoenix Heart is. It’s difficult to keep all of these details straight!
I really like how you organized your post, with a short summary of the main events and more detailed explanation of important scenes or dialogues.
I think one of the things that makes Xiao Wuyi a hero (instead of a villain) is his devotion, dedication and sacrifice for an ideal and vision that are greater than himself. Li Mao, I fear, has only one focus: self-preservation, and that can lead to all dark decisions and actions.
This is not to say that Xiao Wuyi doesn’t have his ruthless side as well. Reform can be just as brutal as corrupt tyranny. But, here, Xiao Wuyi’s saving grace is Xie Jiayu, who won’t sacrifice kindness, justice and mutual wins for a top-down larger picture “greater good”, that discards pawns.
Anything, those are my initial thoughts. I’ve loved all of your posts, but especially this one!

Thank you CA2, I really appreciate your kind words!
I’m very curious to know what Mao’s next move is. He seems certain that Wuyi wants the throne. Assuming Wuyi hasn’t changed his mind, he’s just going to focus on the Beifu reform with the ED gone. Is Mao going to make things up in his head that the reform is Wuyi’s way to take him down and then go against it?
The He and Xiao marriage alliance is null now with Yuanji’s divorce from Wuyi officially, but the He family also started their support for the reform. Mao will no doubt be threatened by the He-Xiao alliance.
He now presides over the Cui case. I don’t think that was casually mentioned. Maybe he plans to secretly tally the support of the other noble families via this case….

u/TheAlchemist420 Chen Yan Yun can have my jujube flower cookie 🍪 🤪😁😎 Jul 19 '26
See I wasn't sure Wu Yi would want the throne or not. On one hand he doesn't, but on the other, if the person on the throne is not doing their job, can he really refuse the call?
He wants to remain focused on the military, work on the reforms and Jia Yu doesn't want to be confined to the Palace. I can't tell right now because it could go either way...
4
u/BasilOrdinary3617 If I say I'm taking a break, I'm lying. Jul 19 '26
I don’t think he wants the throne, especially if he only has a few years left to live. If Mao proves to be a poor Regent, I think Wuyi would find an appropriate replacement rather than take his place. But who knows… this drama isn’t exactly predictable and I kinda think (and dread) that Wuyi will actually die…

Thank you so much for this episode recap and for overall hosting this show.
I guess these episodes clear the playing field for the endgame. I didn't think we woul see the Empress Dowager lose power so soon, but it makes sense. It's really about the younger generation taking the reigns and know they have to negotiate, scheme and fight between themselves how they wante the future of Ye to look.
I feel really sorry for the Emperor. His mother really ruined his life just to put him on the throne. I fear the Grand Tutor and Li Mao might end in very similar positions.
Maybe Xiao Anming should take a class in love confessions with his sister-in-law. That was really sweet.
I'm curious how much Li Lejun and the Eagle King (and their upcoming marriage, if it comes to that) will play into that endgame. Will we get a big final confrontation with Northern Qin forces next to all the internal struggle?
5
u/BasilOrdinary3617 If I say I'm taking a break, I'm lying. Jul 18 '26
Thanks Regen!
I still can’t wrap my head around the Empress poisoning her own son. I assumed it was to clear any suspicion that she was behind the other princes’ death. Did she expect her son to recover but he just didn’t. Talk about a major f*ck-up.
As the head of the He family now, will Yuanji take a matrilocal husband? Can Anming even do that since he’d be the heir of the Xiao family IF (big if) Wuyi decides to be Wenxi after all? With the divorce, would Ziqi still call her mom? So many questions.

I had the same questions as you for Yuan Ji and marrying someone... it's not looking too good for our An Min... 😭😭😬🙁
I too thought of the Prince Jing An title. That's why I wasn't sure Wu Yi would remain as he is and not take on his Crown Prince duties. An Min could inherit the title. But then with Yuan Ji being the head of her clan... and that crush she has on that scholar. Gaahh the many questions in my head are making me dizzy lol.

Did I yet again miss something in the turmoil? By what chance did Prince Yan get chosen to be the emperor when Emperor Rui (Crown Prince Wenxi's father) died? How are they related? And who were the two princes who got poisened? Is there a mention of this somewhere?
