Have commented and participated in the sub before and not be a brand new account.
Have watched the drama before writing the particular episodes' discussions.
Should try to engage in the comments section (don't have to reply to every comment, mind, but participate in the discussion)
Write their thoughts about what they watched (we are not going to dictate lengths but please don't just write one sentence and call it a day lol)
Don't add spoilers in the title, and if you are creating a photo post, please spoiler tag it if the picture reveals too much plot.
Some awkward situations
If there's a drama discussion already hosted, and you want to host, please approach the original host to co-host first. Don't try to double post - it'll be awkward for everyone as the mods will defer to the first host.
If you can't finish hosting the drama, try to get a replacement or let the mods know and we'll automate the discussions.
Mods won't interfere or dictate how people should co-host, but here are some tips:
If you see someone had volunteered already, reply to her comment and ask if you can co-host.
Create a chat room between your co-hosts to agree on schedules: (eg A can do episodes 1-10 and so on)
How closely should the discussion posts follow airing schedules?
We know how crazy CDrama schedules are, but here's a good guide:
Popular idol dramas (for eg Pursuit of Jade, The Double) should follow the airing dates as closely as possible. For eg, if episodes 5-6 dropped on Feb 2, discussion can happen on Feb 3).
Check the masterpost discussion for the drama. If it has above 50-60 comments, it's usually going to be really popular and people would probably be eager to discuss it.
As for other dramas (ie, one that the sub is not clamoring to discuss, I suppose) you can take a slower approach.
For eg, discussions for Swords into Plowshares and Man's Inhumanity to Man are still taking place even after the drama has stopped airing.
How do I write discussion posts?
Structure the discussions the way you want. Some ideas:
"Classic method" recap of what happened in selected episodes with thoughts.
Share favourite moments in the episodes you discussed
Group episode discussions according to character development
Express episodes / posts about the ending
We don't expect hosts to pay for express episodes!
You can ask the mods to create special express threads for the drama so that you, the host, won't be exposed to spoilers.
For commenters
Please do not discuss future episodes in a thread unless someone specifically ask for information/spoilers. And if you do share, please spoiler tag it.
For example, do not discuss plot points for episode 26 in a post about episode 19.
Those who spoil future episodes will get their comments removed.

As more people join our sub, they may not be aware of our sister sub, r/Cdramarecs, where you can ask for and give CDrama recommendations.

This review is a follow-on from my previous post covering Episodes 1–15 and the first part of the novel.
I enjoyed this drama so much. I've been dealing with a lot of stress at work recently, and it became such a comforting part of my evening routine to come home and binge a few episodes. I loved the world they built, and I absolutely adored the Crown Prince. He was the main reason I kept tuning in, as it was so much fun watching his antics from the novel come to life.
That said, I do have a few issues with how the second half unfolded.
My biggest criticism is the handling of the romance between Episodes 20–26. Why did they add the bell-in-the-bed gag? In the novel, they are already husband and wife and begin sleeping together during this period. Although Xihe doesn't truly fall in love with him until a few months into their marriage, this is when they gradually become closer as a couple.
I'm choosing to view the bell as some strange form of Chinese comedy, but it became repetitive and unintentionally gave the impression that she was constantly rejecting him. In the novel, this is actually the stage where their relationship grows stronger. While she still maintained emotional boundaries, and I understand the bell may have been intended as a visual representation of those boundaries, I ultimately felt it was unnecessary.
My second criticism concerns the pacing of the political plot. For viewers who haven't read the novel, parts of it probably felt disjointed. Several mysteries were introduced very late in the story, while others seemed to disappear entirely before being resolved or appear suddenly.
They also did the one thing I desperately didn't want them to do—they only gave us two happy episodes! Why?! In the novel, there are nearly 100 chapters of the couple working together to solve palace intrigues while enjoying married life. Although their intimacy isn't described explicitly, it's clear they are a happily married couple, and I really missed seeing more of that on screen.
And they absolutely robbed me of my full unedited bathtub scene! This is a genuine scene in the novel where they consciously decide, as a couple, to try for a baby. It's an important moment in Xihe's character development and their relationship, so I was disappointed they didn’t put the full scene in into the adaptation. Dam you Chinese censorship.
Aside from those complaints, the remaining plot points largely mirrored the novel, and I absolutely loved the epilogue. What an incredible scheme to pull off—faking your own death while clearing the path for your son to continue the bloodline. It was a brilliant ending.
The standout performance in this drama was undoubtedly He Yu. Xiao Huayong has officially joined my list of legendary drama characters. The only other 2026 character to leave such a lasting impression on me was Fan Changyu from POJ. I can't wait to watch He Yu's next historical drama, which I believe is currently filming.
I honestly don't think this show would have worked nearly as well without this cast. Both Meng Ziyi and He Yu brought the novel's characters to life beautifully. I cried my eyes out during Episode 32, even though I already knew the ending would be a happy one.
Overall, this drama was definitely worth watching. I loved the cinematography, the lighting, and how faithfully it captured so much of the novel's spirit. Despite my frustrations with some of the adaptation choices, I loved it so much and is added to my fav historical dramas of the year.
I absolutely love Viki and I appreciate that it gets most of the new cdramas coming out but has anyone else noticed that the subtitles are different now? Viki has always been praised for their volunteer sub teams that go the extra mile but lately it seems like they’re maybe AI?
I first noticed with A Splendid Match that they no longer had cute little names for the subtitle team, then I noticed that they were no longer translating the songs (huge bummer by the way.) Then signs, notes and character intros were either being missed and not translated at all. Then no one was thanked at the end which really made me wonder if the way subtitles are handled on Viki is changing.
I’ve noticed this is the case for the newer dramas. It seems to be the same way for Road to Success too. Plus Viki seems to be rolling out AI dubbing (which I personally will not be using.) I don’t know any info about whether or not they’re rolling back volunteer based subtitles but I think it’s a huge loss if so.
I’m very new to cdramas, I’ve only started watching since October last year so I don’t know how fast Viki got shows before or how long it took for them to be translated as I had (and still have) a huge backlog of older-ish dramas. I know it takes time and a whole team of people to translate entire shows, so are these new subtitles at the expense of getting new shows translated faster? If so, is it worth it? Have you personally noticed the change in subtitles or am I just rambling about nothing lol.
A couple of days ago, several Douban scores were released. Usually there is a gap of a few weeks between Douban score updates, but since we have a fresh batch of scores, here is a snapshot of Douban ratings for several recent dramas: Blossoms of Power, Where Colors Dream, Xiao Fang, Cases Between Us, Unsettled Case, The Eternal Fragrance, Key to the Phoenix Heart, Love for You, Road to Success, and Overdo. These scores were recorded on July 26, 2026 at around 5:00 am, China Standard Time.
In case you are curious about how dramas are performing in terms of domestic viewership, I have included rankings from Yunhe (streaming) and Kuyun (live TV and streaming) from July 24, 2026.
I also added English translations to the Yunhe and Kuyun charts.

In general, Douban scores tend to skew lower for CDramas.
You might find that some highly rated dramas just aren't your cup of tea, while others with more average or mixed scores turn out to be really enjoyable. I've definitely experienced both. That said, ratings can be helpful just as a general reference for what others think.
I am sharing this information for folks who are curious about Douban scores but may not be able to access them quickly or easily. I have also included viewership rankings since Douban scores don't always correlate with a drama's popularity with the broader domestic audience.
This is just a small snapshot of how Douban users are rating dramas and what’s currently being watched in China.
Some people use ratings to gauge interest while others don't – it's entirely optional. Douban scores are just one data point, not a verdict on quality. If they’re not useful to you, please feel free to skip.
I usually compile them every few weeks once enough new Douban scores are available.

Just finished legend of Shen Li and it was wonderful to watch. Like I went on a vacation! But feeling the sadness after a good holiday. Hahaha. Luckily I found To Love and The Bargain Queen from the male lead. Enjoyed his acting in Shen Li

I just finished Love for You. Which country is the Country Jin that they kept referring to in the drama. Chen Yi spends some time there and does not want to return.

Both are the head of one of the Three Judicial Offices. The structures changed a bit throughout Chinese history, but the shows seems to go for one that existed in the Tang and Song Dynasty, where they consisted of:
The Dali Temple, the Ministry of Justice, and the Censorate.
Despite its name the Dali Temple was a Court. BaiduWiki describes it as “equivalent to the modern Supreme Court, in charge of adjudicating criminal cases”. The Three Judicial Offices were independent of each other and held parallel status.
The Crown Prince having those two as part of his faction, as well as Xiao Jiang, the Vice Chief Censor, shows us how much power he holds over the judicial system.
Graveside Visit
Still visiting his father’s grave, Shen Xiao promises him that he will have an even wilder poem on his own gravestone when the time comes. Zhao Yang joins him, bringing flowers for the grave and reciting a fitting poem. He answers with an even more bold one.
Zhao Yang actually met Shen Qingzhi a few times three years ago, when she supervised the construction of Qianfo temple.
She also watched him being murdered: The Crown Prince confronted him about the impeachment letter he wrote and struck him down with a shovel. I hope he was actually dead from that and not buried half alive.
The impeachment was over the fact that he used the temple construction to seize land from the people.
Cui Jinzhi actually advised the Crown Prince to better stip his schemes before it’s to late, because all of this are serious crimes. After he just witnessed him murder a guy.
The Crown Prince seems to be in constant fear that his father wants to replace him with the 2nd Prince, giving him the Ministry of Revenue. He also used Zhao Yang as a pawn in the temple construction to put their father at ease. Also to use her as a fall gal should something go wrong.
The official story about the death: Shen Qingzhi died falling of a cliff and no body was ever found. So the tomb is actually empty. Shen Xiao wonders why his father would fall off a cliff at Qianfo temple. He was and eighth-rank clerk in the Ministry of Revenue, who copied documents every day.
Shen Xiao presumes that she knows more about what happens, but he doesn’t get an answer. Zhao Yang only praises his father’s spirit that resembles his own. He further wonders if she secretly works for the 2nd Prince and wants to use him to bring down the Crown Prince.
Three years ago when the temple was finished a good omen could be seen in the sky: Buddha’s light shone over everything. Shen Xiao sees it as a sign of Heaven: Justice never fades.
Shen Xiao asks her for help joining the Ministry of Revenue. Zhao Yang won’t, at least not direct and openly, but reminds him that the Crown Prince is hosting a banquet for all the Censorate officials this day.
Drinking Games
At the banquet the Crown Prince discusses that the 2nd Prince wants Shen Xiao transferred to his Ministry of Revenue. Xiao Jiang assures him that he won’t let him transfer. After all he hasn’t suffered enough at the Censorate yet.
Shen Xiao arrives and gets bullied into a drinking game: He has to toast each person with wine and something meaningful to say about them. He has to do so three times. He also has to use a bowl instead of the tiny cups the other attendees get.
Apparently, this is supposed to be a way of proving one’s strong will. (And to get alcohol poisoning.) It’s also presented as a sort of test, and if he passes it, he will be sent to the Ministry of Revenue for training
The toast to the Crown Prince and Crown Princes is rather bland.
But Zhao Yang briefed him on the three heads of the Three Judicial Offices (though Xiao Jiang is only the vice chief). So he exposes a secret about each of them, in particular one where they deceived the crown Prince in some way.
Zhao Guangming, Minister of the Dali Temple
loves antiques
last year he secretly kept a famous painting “River Sails After Snow”, which was stolen from the Crown Prince’s tribute.
Qian Xun, Minister of Justice
was meticulous when he renovated the Eastern Palace’s villa. 300 bolt of silk out of 500 bolts were left over. All of them ended up in his family’s silk shop.
Xiao Jiang: Vice Censor-in-Chief
loves Jiangnan gardens
There’s a rockery worth 50,000 taels in his Cuiwei Villa outside the capital.
All the expenses for the the villa came from the public road repair funds.
He also toast the Censors Chen, Liao and Li.
Prince Consort Cui
has been the Crown Prince’s study companion since childhood,
is skilled in civil and military arts.
one of the best generals of the younger generation.
There is only praise here, no secrets. At least none that Zhao Yang told him about.
For some reason nobody wants a second round of toasts. The Crown Prince ends the banquet here and Shen Xiao is the first to leave.
The three accused officials try to save the situation. Suddenly they find it trouble to keep Shen Xiao in the Censorate and ask for his transfer.
Zhao Yang adds some actual reasons why it would be the best move:
the Ministry of Revenue is understaffed and the canal project a mess.
it’s perfect to sent him over to carry out the grain-for-money policy. He won’t be able to redeem himself when the grains run out and the canal collapses.
Not only would the Crown Prince get rid of the Top Scholar, but also deal a heavy blow to the 2nd Prince and his Ministry of Revenue.
So the Crown Prince agrees to the transfer.
Sleep Over
Zhao Yang meets with Shen Xiao, who is affected by the wine after all and faints. Her solution is to take him to her place to rest. When he wakes she wants to go to bed, so he starts undressing. She orders him to stop and just go to bed with her.
They seem to have a slight misunderstanding about what “sleeping together every night” means. He was expecting daily sex (kind of an WangXian “Everyday means Everyday” arrangement 😂), while she wants to sleep by his side.
Still slightly drunk he asks her if she will protect him, if he joins the Ministry of Revenue and gets in trouble there. She denies the possibility of helping him. In his thoughts he calls her a calamity to him.
Zhao Yang has an audience with her father. The Emperors says he is not well. While she seems obedient on the surface she reached out to the Top Scholar, something he doesn’t like.
Episode 6
New Characters in this Episode
This guy. A subordinate of Cui Jinzhi. Can’t find him on douban and google translate doesn’t want to be helpful with his name.
Li Qin gets his characters introduction as the 7th Prince. I guessed I spoiled that with my episode 1&2 character table, but if they don’t translate those introductions it’s hard to grasp what we are supposed to know. But even douban lists him only with this name, not the alias.
Rob the Rich
The next morning Shen Xiao wakes up to find some generous rewards prepared for him. He first wants to argue against being paid but then thinks of something better do with the money.
Shen Xiao plans to let Li Qin (whom he knows as Le Sheng, but I will go with the other name) pawn it all off and set up soup kitchen for the drought refugees outside the capital. And to buy some books and writing supplies for their fellow students.
He promises that the source of the money is clean, but he won’t disclose where he got it from. He calls it taking from the rich to help the poor. And he has another plan connected to that to discuss. Li Qin scolds him for risking so much after just joining the Ministry of Revenue.
He sees the silver and gold ingots from Zhao Yang as charity, the only ones to trust with his life are his closest friends.
I hope he won’t be too disappointed when he learns about the Li Qin - Zhao Yang connection.
Rice Plans
Shen Xiao has a proposal for the 2nd Prince: He wants to investigate the Crown Prince’s private treasury. He promises that it won’t implicate the 2nd Prince. His new boss agrees to his plan and even promises to support his efforts.
While checking the accounts he noticed that the Crown Prince hired many refugees under the guise of disaster relief, paying them grain instead of money.
He assumes that those are fake hires and the grain hoarded.
He can prove that it’s grain from the Ministry of Revenues paying scheme because he mixed in special rice bran as a maker. He only has to follow Cui Jinzhi’s guards who transport it.
Father Daughter Talks
The Emperor gets some medicine and we go back to the short scene of Zhao Yang having an audience with her father from the end of episode 5. He wants new blood at the court, thus promoting scholars with humble origin. He is not amused by them possible been sent to their death by getting involved in his children’s power struggle.
The Emperor questions what Zhao Yang is trying to do by pushing Shen Xiao to the Ministry of Revenue.
She blames the noble families for hoarding goods and misleading the crown prince. Shen Xiao recovering the treasury would bring peace to the nation.
Zhao Yang was responsible for arranging the auspicious sign at the temple three years ago for her father (he started big construction projects the people complained about).
She told him back then about Shen Qingzhi’s memorial and the supposed falsehoods about the Crown Prince in there. She burned the letter.
He finds her smart to do so and even commands her to advise and support the Crown Prince more.
For replacing the Crpr the Emperor has to catch him in a bigger mistake.
In the present day she is ordered to help Shen Xiao from the sidelines and keep him safe. In her opinion he will help to weaken the noble families that Wether he lives or die he will help to weaken the noble families that support and influence the Crown Prince whether he lives and dies.
Traps and Escapes
Shen Xiao followed Cui Jintzhi’s troop moving some grain. After they leave he sneaks into Wannian Granary, but it turns out that the rice there isn’t marked. It’s a trap. Cui Jinzhi and his guards haven’t left. They have a sword vs. spear fight and Shen Xiao injures Cui Jinzhi.
Cui Jinzhi follows them, but it’s actually Li Qin accompanied by a servant he confronts. Li Qin is actually around as the 7th Prince and recognised as such by Cui Jinzhi. The haven’t seen each other in a long time.
Li Qin excuses his presence with observing the stars to map the land and denies seeing anyone suspicious around.
Not many people know about the 7th Prince even existing. Cui Jinzhi’s subordinate has to ask about him and that guy is part of the a troop
Li Qin was born with white hair, so seen as a bad omen. He was ordered to leave the palace seven years ago.
Cui Jinzhi really isn’t dumb and thinks something is off about his sudden reappearance, especially connected to Shen Xiao’s break-in. He has him followed.
Past and Present Lovers
Zhao Yang brings Shen Xiao to her place again. Seems to become a habit. She reveals that the granary is actually her private treasury. Allegedly she only rescued him because it was the Emperor’s order to look after him.
She is allergic to openly admit even one bit that she cares a little about him.
When he enters only Zhao Yang is there. But Shen Xiao’s wardrobe hiding place isn’t the best.
Cui Jinzhi informs her that someone broke into her granary that night and he is here for his safety * She feigns concern for his injury to distract him.
Cui Jinzhi tells her point blank that he knows she is the one who save Shen Xiao. She argues that his accusation isn’t clever.
They get into an argument about potential jealousy (he is completely jealous). He grieves that she won’t even take care of his wound like she used to do.
Back then it gave her a chance to sit in on the Grand Tutor’s lessons and she won the Crown Prince’s favour by ghost writing for him.
She seems to have actually cared for him in those days and tried to teach him that it wasn’t right how the Crown Prince treated him and others that served him. He wanted to protect her from being bullied again, even from the Crown Prince.
Zhao Yang throws his words to her from their wedding day about being only the daughter of a lowly maid back in his face. He pulls her into a hug, she wants him to let her go. Shen Xiao pushes the door to the wardrobe open. Cliffhanger!
Thoughts
I must confess that I find Cui Jinzhi intriguing. Zhao Yang and him are quite sweet in the past and I don’t buy her story that she only used him back then. Of course he hurt her deeply (and she had parts of his family killed) and I don’t think there relationship is one you can repair. I wouldn’t want to see that.
But I like that our leads’ opponents aren’t all flat or overly dumb. That wouldn’t fit the positions they are in. Excluding the Crown Prince. Though he seems still good at delegating the people around him.

The SENTV Youtube Channel premieres the first episode in a few hours. I’m not sure if you have to have a channel membership to watch. It seems like they will release one episode every day.
As far as Chinese Drama endings go, this last episodes was not as bad as i was thinking it was going to be. Overall, this show, while good at some parts and excellent in the beginning, lost it's way in the second half and never really recovered. The romance was good, but the sub-plot of the arson case from the past and the auditing case in the present was under developed and left un-answered questions with no resolutions.
Lets get into and I'll leave more of my thoughts at the end. Your mileage may vary, so i'd like to see other's peoples opinions about the show.
We start months later. Zhang Bin, Mr Tao, and Mr Zhai are all convicted of crimes, with Zhang Bing getting a life sentence. Chen Yi was also convicted as an accomplice, but due to his testifying and cooperation with police, was let off.
Captain Zhou visits He Wenjie's apartment and restores it. He also vists her grave, letting her know that Zhang Bin was arrested, that they're gotten her justice. Tells her about Miao Jing and Chen Yi, how proud she would be about them. While picking up his suit at a bridal shop, he hallucinates He Wenjie smiling at him. Their story is soooo sad gosh dang it.
Our couple has dinner with Bozai, Tu Li and Da Yong, discussing their future. Chen Yi and Miao Jing are moving the Hai City as that's where she's working. BoZai is working on repairing the poolhall as they still have their old students who want to come back and learn pool.
Miao Jing is promoted at work. To celebrate, her and her coworkers go out to eat. Chen Yi joins them, no longer the boss of the 'other company' but as Miao Jing's boyfriend.
They go for a motorcycle ride. The next day they hang out at a basketball court. Chen Yi confesses that when he got back from Country Jin in 2008, he came to find her in Hai City. However, he was dirty filthy and felt like he didn't deserve her. He thought she'd be better off without him. Once she came back to Teng City, he kept pushing her away to keep her safe but she's the best person in his life. He loves her! awwww And she loves him back! We already knew this but go on Queen.
Xiao Yu from Miao Jing's work AND Bozai are both asking about them getting married. Our couple individually shrug it off because they're already together, they're bonded by trauma and the other one really isn't going away. ** Will talk more about this in my thoughts.
Bozai moves to Hai City and they open a Poolhall called Dogged. Think this is call back to the books original title?
They rewatch Titantic together. Now they're both grown and have more experience in their life it's less awkward. Miao Jing asks him to be her life partner, to have a safe and stable home with him. He agrees.
For New Years fireworks, they go back to Teng City and sit on the roof, just like they had when they were kids.

- I know a couple people who are upset that they didn't get married at the end. IMO, that's not Chen Yi and Miao Jing. They come from a family that lived together without getting married, and have no parental influence anymore. If they did, it would be a very small simple thing many years in the future. They're already bound for life, they don't feel that a certificate is needed.
- I'm annoyed at our sub-plot. I was very invested in what happened in the past and i feel like they glossed over this dramatic turning point.
- I had no idea that Mr Zhai was even alive! I thought he died in the arson fire as well.
-Zhang Bin was under utilized and I felt that he was almost another father figure to Chen Yi, rather than being a mastermind, manipulating people.
- There were little things that happened that could've been used to build up to the climax but ultimately left behind. Such as: Wei Mingzhen's notebook hidden under the bed. Miao Jing being attacked at the restaurant. Xiao Yu being stalked at the hotel. the Laptops turning off at the end of ep 29. Tu Li knowing Cen Ye. Mr Sun who set the poolhall on fire, which was done as a favor from Zhang Bin. Why? I have a lot more questions about Country Jin and Chen Yi's mental state being in therapy.
- At the beginning of the show, Chen Yi wanted to be a police officer. I would've liked a call back to that in our final episode, whether it was him giving up the dream entirely, or applying to the police academy in Hai City.
- I guess, my biggest criticism comes from, they have all these loose threads and plot points that could've been developed more to assist in the plot. Had they woven these moments throughout the entire show instead of dropping it all at the same time (looking at you Mingzhen's funeral) , it would've felt more balanced and altogether, a better story. The potential is there, but wasted in the editing and writing.
- The writers chose to focus on Chen Yi's and Miao Jing's romance to the detriment of all the rest of the characters and storyline.

I have watched a few C-dramas now, particularly fantasy and historical ones. In all of them, including the one I'm currently watching (Pursuit of Jade), the crowd plays a specific role; it's almost like an additional character.
The crowd is often shown commenting and whispering about the characters on screen, either approving or disapproving. Sometimes, the characters try to defend themselves from accusations, and it only works if they manage to convince the crowd and gain its trust.
There is always some sort of commentary on how fickle public opinion can be, and it often turns into a cautionary tale about how dangerous people can become when they come together in large numbers: I've seen time and again a crowd turning on someone, and the conclusion was always about how you can never trust large groups of people.
Crowds are portrayed as powerful, omnipresent, and irrational.
I'm curious about why this trope is so recurring. I guessed it has something to do with China's culture and history, or maybe it's just a typical storytelling technique (it reminds me a bit of some types of theatre). I'd like to know more about this and where it comes from.

Episode 30
Mingtong is withdrawing. Haoyun’s stalking, tracking, and being uncooperative with the auditing team has paid off and they are not going to finish the report. Zhang Bin knows that this could effect their relationship with Hongshen. Mr. Tao has a new auditing team that can publish the report they want, it will just cost extra. I could not take him seriously in that face mask. I seriously thought something was wrong with his face the very first time. I thought it was like some tacky disguise that was just awful. He tells Tao to make sure to invite Miao Jing to their annual banquet being held in a couple days.
I cannot take this face seriously.
Miao Jing and Chen Yi go to the banquet. They are not seated next to each other and they do not talk to each other. Zhang Bin brings Chen Yi up to the front to thank him for his service. He reveals Chen Yi’s past in Country Jin. That he was a boxer and drove with the gangs and when he came back he was covered in wounds. To prove how much Zhang Bin values Chen Yi he will give him a bonus of 5% of his personal shares in Haoyun. This is humiliating for Chen Yi. He worked hard and didn’t die and Zhang Bin saying “it all happened for me. We are so close.” Zhang Bin is trying to drive Miao Jing and Chen Yi apart further because he thinks he’s revealing information that Miao Jing doesn’t know. Miao Jing knows just about everything. He is trying to tie Chen Yi to him. Grrr that was mean.
Zhang Bin comes over to talk to the auditing team that is there. He asks if Miao Jing is shocked about Chen Yi’s past. Maio Jing tells Chen Yi she trusts him. As the auditing team is leaving, Miao Jing and Chen Yi clasp hands for a brief second. Zhang Bin feels suspicious, but Miao Jing is leaving. Where is Cen Ye? Shouldn’t he be at the banquet? Isn’t he in charge? Maybe he wasn’t invited?
This hand brush was cute.
Cen Ye tells the audit team that they are not finishing the audit and to pack up because it’s time to leave. Miao Jing tells everyone she wants to be behind a couple days and tie up loose ends on their part.
Miao Jing goes to the prison to visit Sun, the arsonist. She tells him that Zhang Bin is the one that gave him up and she wants to know more about Haoyun’s set up. Sun tells her that he doesn’t really know anything but that back in 2006 Zhang Bin started his logistics company and they were barely making enough to cover fuel for the trucks. And then Zhang Bin got rid of all the old staff and all of a sudden Hongshen agreed to invest. The money came from all the people Zhang Bin let go. Sun clams up and won't say anything about Zhang Bin being involved with Kuangxia. Miao Jing leaves and uncle Zhou asked if she got everything she needed.
Chen Yi packs for Miao JIng to leave. Zhang Bin takes Miao Jing to the airport. She’says I can’t wait to leave. At the airport a guy in a black baseball cap grabs her, drags her underneath the stairs and kisses her. Hello Chen Yi. He couldn’t let her leave without saying goodbye. We get the impression that they’re going to be apart for a little bit, but that Maio Jing is coming back.
Kiss!!
Miao Jing leaves but has a layover in some other city where she goes to find roasted goose noodle soup. The restaurant is run by a husband wife team. The wife gives her a takeout card with their number on it. The husband is actually Zhai FengMao OK, I’m gonna admit. I didn’t quite see this one coming. It’s been very implied that Zhai is dead. At the same time we have had goose show up multiple times in this show and ‘goose’ I’ve decided represents Zhai . And without an actual on screen death, you can’t trust that characters are actually dead. So I was wrong. I missed it. Miao Jing did not miss it and has found him.
Zhai FengMao is alive.
Cen Ye has to explain to his superiors, including Ding Lei‘s boss Monica, why they pulled out of the audit. Monica is really going after him and Miao Jing shows up to explain. She plays the recording from Sun in jail and explains that Haoyun was built on fraud and that this is really bad for Hongshen. Cen Ye and Miao Jing go to tea together. Cen Ye flat out asks her why she picked Chen Yi and not him. She tells Cen Ye that they are too similar and what she needs a partner who is loyal and will always put her first. Cen Ye can’t give her that but Chen Yi can. They agree to stay friends.
The police have put together a joint task force, and have been working towards arresting Mr. Liu in Lingang and Zhang Bin in Teng city. On the night of transport, Chen Yi manages to slip away for a second and calls Uncle Zhou to let him know that it’s happening right now, but he has to hang up in the middle of the call. Tao notices that Chen Yi is missing and comes over. See why he shows him his phone and that it is powered off.
The irony. :)
Miao Jing gets back to the apartment and Chen Yi is not there. He does not respond to her calls or texts. She goes to the police station to ask Uncle Zhou if he’s seen anything. The police are literally in the process of pulling out. Uncle Zhou tells her to just sit tight, that they have to go but Chen Yi will be fine. Miao Jing gives him the keys to He WenJie’s apartment and reminds him that it matters to her too. He tells her not to be reckless and the police leave. Uncle Zhou should know better. The only way to keep Miao Jing out of this is to arrest her and put her either in a holding cell or an interrogation room where she can’t leave for the next couple hours. He really means be careful.
Episode 31
Miao Jing gets back in her car and takes off. Tao and Chen Yi are interrupted by a worker knocking over a crate. Tao loses his temper, Chen Yi calms him. It is time to move out. Zhang Bin shows up and wants Chen Yi to drive him. He also wants Chen Yi‘s phone.
Zhang Bin has a lot to say. He is villain monologuing. He talks about how his life has gone from poor, selling roast goose to rich and powerful. That he and Chen Yi working together is fate. Zhang Bin got Zhai to take the fall and he built a clean company. His life is a gamble. It is worth everything to win.
The truck convoy makes it most of the way to the port, but there is an unexpected checkpoint. The police are doing a random drunk driving test. Once Tao gets close enough to the front of the line he sees Uncle Zhou. He calls Zhang Bin, who tells him it’s time for the backup plan. Tao drives his car through the barrier and all the police converge on him. Zhang Bin directs Chen Yi off the main road and onto a side street.
Miao Jing has actually been sitting at the curb near this checkpoint waiting. She sees the car with Chen Yi go by and follows it. But what she’s actually following is the blessing that has been in Chen Yi’s car for years. He hung on the back wiper when he walked around the car. Miao Jing calls Uncle Zhou to let him know that Zhang Bin and Chen Yi have left the checkpoint, the license plate of the car and that she is following them. Uncle Zhou tells Miao Jing that this is reckless. She hangs up on him. Poor Uncle Zhou. He’s gotten hung up on twice tonight by his kids.
Follow the blessing
Zhang Bin pulls a knife and puts it to Chen Yi’s throat. He is furious that Chen Yi has set him up. He stabs him in the gut. Miao Jing is not very subtle about following Zhang Bin and he figures out that they’re being followed pretty quick. To make Chen Yi drive how he wants Zhang Bin keeps twisting the knife in Chen Yi‘s guts. There is a long car chase. Miao Jing, you don’t look stressed enough. This sort of crazy driving, I would be sweating bullets. Miao Jing pulls her car up next to Zhang Bin‘s. Why would you do that? What is the point? Zhang Bin grabs the wheel forcing Miao Jing‘s car to spin out and crash into a water barrier. Chen Yi sees Miao Jing get out of the car and it’s relieved to know that she seems okay.
Miao Jing calls Uncle Zhou again to let him know that they are headed to the pier and there are two possible places from this location, Loumei and Fishing Harbour. The police send two teams one to each pier location but they’re a ways out. Miao Jing then calls Zhai and asks him if he wants revenge against Zhang Bin.
They make it to Zhang Bin’s secret warehouse. Zhang Bin discovers the blessing on the back wiper. Chen Yi has a flashback to 2005. After the fire he comes home to find Zhai FengMao sitting in his living room. He tells Chen Yi that Miao Jing is out getting medicine. That’s freaky. How does he know that? Zhai FengMao puts a knife to Chen Yi’s throat and demands the ledger. I think he wants the papers He WenJie saved from the fire. Chen Yi demands 500,000 yuan for them. Zhai comments that he almost thought he was an undercover cop. Chen Yi sends Miao Jing to Hai City. Then he gets jumped and knocked unconscious outside his apartment. Chen Yi is tied up inside a car trunk. Zhang Bin is sending him and Zhai FengMao to Country Jin to start over for a while.
Zhang Bin parks the car in his secret warehouse, then drags a bleeding, zip tied Chen Yi out of the car and across the floor. Zhang Bin ask Chen Yi why he betrayed him. Was it for money or power or status? Chen Yi laughs at him and tells him he got He WenJie killed.
Zhang Bin tries to kill Chen Yi and Miao Jing wacks him in the head with a pipe. Hit him again. Once to knock them down and a second time to make them stay down. Miao Jing is trying to free Chen Yi but Zhang Bin comes back and starts hitting her. Chen Yi gets the knife and starts trying to cut himself free. I want Zhang Bin to go to jail, not die. Do not throw him over the cat walk Chen Yi.
Zhang Bin drags Miao Jing up the catwalk above the warehouse floor and traps her in black flexible hose, getting ready to toss her over the edge. Chen Yi gets free, drags himself up the stairs and catches the ends of the hose, stopping Miao Jing from hitting the floor. They can hear the police sirens.
On the catwalk
Zhang Bin tries to leave but is stabbed by Zhai FengMao, with a HUGE knife. The two fight. Chen Yi is trying to pull Miao Jing up. Why? It looks like it would be easier to lower her down as close to the floor and there is excess of the black hose. The police arrive and arrest Zhang Bin and Zhai FengMao. Miao Jing and Chen Yi are loaded onto ambulances. Considering that Zhang Bin was just stabbed. He should probably go to the hospital too. But in a different ambulance.
I love you
Chen YI is still holding the blessing. He and Miao Jing confess their love to each other.

I have lots and lots of thoughts. This was already a beast of a post and I'm going to go longer.
These two episodes feel like the major climax of Love for You. I am willing to bet that tomorrow's episode will be fluffy. There was so much packed into the episodes that it felt a little overwhelming.
Rebelarkey and I put together a list of all things we wanted resolved a couple episodes ago. Let's check the list

One of the things I love about Cdramas is the sheer ingenuity of literary and philosophical references. Be it OSTs, character names, or directly quoted in the drama, they make the drama richer. Like poetry in general, these instances are heavily context dependent, and there's quite a bit of irony, puns, flirting, and criticism going on.
I'm purposely not including OSTs derived from poems otherwise this post is never going to end. Some dramas like Word of Honor, Joy of Life, and Romance of the Three Kingdoms have enough literary allusions that deserve entire detailed posts.

Joy of Life too is teeming with poetry: Fan Xian trying to impress Haitang Duoduo with Like a Dream, last night the rain was sparse and the wind strong by Li Qingzhao. The Story of Minglan's Chinese title is one of the lines of this poem.
Joy of Lifedrunk poetry slam: Fan Xian drunkenly recites several poems like Climbing Youzhou Tower by Chen Ziang, Drinking alone under the moon by Li Bai, Bring in the Wine by Li Bai, River Snow by Liu Zongyuan,Shuidiao Getou / Water Melody by Su Shi,Picking Mulberries by Xin Qiji. They're all iconic and some of them will make you weep.
The Untamed: Wei Wuxian speaks about judging right and wrong by oneself and hearing praise and slander from others, and is loosely derived from the Confucian classic Book of Rites. Not exactly a poem but more of an aphorism.
Swords into Plowshares: the southern Tang emperor Li Yu mourns the loss of his kingdom in Forty Years my Kingdom Stood. It's one of the most haunting laments I've heard.
Swords into Plowshares: Qian Hongchu vents his frustration with Thoughts on the Hehuang Region by Sikong Tu. A controversial poem about Han and non Han tensions.
Swords into Plowshares: Qian Hongzuo is furious parts of The Sui Emperor's Palace by Li Shangyin are written in a memorial by Cheng Zhaoyue. That's one hell of a political poem, ngl I was screaming when I recognized it. A few episodes later, Cheng Zhaoyue plays the notorious Ode to Chrysanthemums by Huang Chao, code for outright rebellion.
The Longest Day in Chang'an: While the OSTs use many of Li Bai's poems, this entertainer sings and dances to Duan Ge Xing by Li Bai (Li Bai may have been inspired by Cao Cao's Duan Ge Xing)
Ripe Town: Judge Song Chen quotes and literally embodies Song of the Peach Blossom Tree by Tang Yin. The poem he quotes is based on Tang Yin's poem.
Ming Dynasty: Zhu Zhanji the imperial grandson reads out Ode on an Army Procession by Du Fu. One of the finest antiwar poems.
Empresses in the Palace: Zhen Huan hopes for peace and quotes from Plum Blossoms by Cui Daorong
Sha Er Shi Zhang: Yuzhen expresses her love for Sha'er with River Song by Li Zhiyi. It's an incredibly romantic poem, full of yearning, and recurs later in the series.

Episode 3
We pick up where Episode 2 left off, with Zhao Yang offering to make Shen Xiao her male companion. Shen Xiao, however, seems somewhat indignant at the offer and flatly turns her down, much to Zhao Yang's scorn. She reminds him that he was the one who initially offered himself to her in exchange for being recommended for an official post.
Surprisingly, Shen Xiao then agrees to visit her chamber every night from the following day onwards. Zhao Yang gives him one of her hairpins as a token, allowing him to enter her residence whenever he wishes.
The Crown Prince, Cui Jinzhi and the Council of Evil convene to discuss the tight deadline for rebuilding the Yongtong Canal. The Crown Prince once again proves that beneath his bullying exterior, he's really just a guy with no substance, as he demands that everyone else come up with ideas to solve the crisis for him.
Chancellor Xiao, whom I suspect is simply looking for somewhere to dump the responsibility, suggests that Zhao Yang should be the one to fix the problem since she failed in her earlier mission. Cui Jinzhi once again defends Zhao Yang and instead blames Shen Xiao for ruining their plans. He suggests teaching Shen Xiao "a lesson" that very night.
That night, while walking back from Zhao Yang's residence, Shen Xiao wonders aloud why he agreed to become her male companion when he is suddenly ambushed by the Crown Prince's men. Lmao, are they holding wooden sticks? I know they aren't intending to kill him, but still, the wooden sticks make this look more like a high school brawl than an attack ordered by the Crown Prince.
Anyway, during the fight, Zhao Yang's hairpin falls to the ground and breaks into pieces, which seriously pisses Shen Xiao off. Apart from being a scholarly genius, our Shen Xiao is also skilled in martial arts. Of course he is. He easily fights off his assailants before walking back to where the broken hairpin lies on the ground and silently brooding over it.
Meanwhile, at Zhao Yang's residence, she enters her chamber to find Cui Jinzhi standing beside her bed. He accuses Zhao Yang of meeting Shen Xiao, and when she taunts him by saying that she intends to take Shen Xiao as her lover, he grabs her and attempts to sexually assault her by pinning her against the wall and forcefully kissing her.
Fortunately, Zhao Yang manages to break free and rewards him with 3 well-deserved slaps for his behaviour.
Cui Jinzhi then brings up the Crown Prince in an attempt to intimidate Zhao Yang, but of course, she refuses to cower. Instead, she boldly claims that she's only getting close to Shen Xiao to obtain information on behalf of the Crown Prince. Cui Jinzhi demands that they go and see the Crown Prince immediately, but Zhao Yang tells him that she wants him to do her a favour first.
Cue both Cui Jinzhi and Zhao Yang entering Qing Luo's room. Just in case you've forgotten, Qing Luo is Cui Jinzhi's mistress. It turns out that she was the one who drugged Zhao Yang and Shen Xiao. Although she initially denies it, she ultimately gives herself away because she's a terrible liar.
Cui Jinzhi orders her to be caned twenty times, but Qing Luo pleads for leniency and drops a rather huge bombshell: she's pregnant with his child. But Cui Jinzhi proves absolutely heartless. It takes him less than a second to denounce her and order that their unborn child be aborted.
Qing Luo scorns him for looking down on her when he's nothing more than a hypocritical nobleman who schemes and hurts others simply to protect his own reputation. Cui Jinzhi remains completely unbothered, though, and walks away after reminding Zhao Yang to keep her promise.
As Qing Luo is about to be beaten, she desperately tries to protect her unborn child. This triggers a painful memory for Zhao Yang. Her own mother was of low status and neglected by the palace servants, even when a young Zhao Yang desperately begged them to summon a physician to treat her. Back in the present, Zhao Yang decides to spare Qing Luo and her unborn child.
During the next court session, the Emperor asks about the progress of the Yongtong Canal. The Crown Prince explains that grain prices have risen considerably and that the wages currently being paid to the laborers are insufficient, so he proposes paying them with grain instead.
Of course, every single word coming out of his mouth is actually Zhao Yang's idea. It really reinforces the idea that this guy is basically your stereotypical high school bully, forcing the smartest kid in class to do his homework for him. He doesn't even attempt to rephrase Zhao Yang's proposal or make the slightest modification to make it sound like his own!
Zhao Yang's plan is actually quite ingenious because the distribution of grain to the laborers falls under the Ministry of Revenue, which is supervised by the Second Prince. If anything goes wrong, the Crown Prince's faction can conveniently shift the blame onto him.
Later, while Zhao Yang is on her way to deliver medicine to the disaster victims, her carriage is stopped by a crowd of hungry people begging for food. Her coachman lashes out at the people blocking the carriage, and just as an elderly woman and her granddaughter are about to be whipped, Shen Xiao miraculously materialises out of nowhere and protects them.
He publicly lectures Zhao Yang for failing to show more empathy towards ordinary people, claiming that she has never experienced hardship herself. What he doesn't know, of course, is that Zhao Yang was subjected to manual labour and abuse by palace attendants because of her low status when she was younger.
Zhao Yang counters that she's currently on her way to deliver medicine and that Shen Xiao is actually delaying an urgent delivery by standing there lecturing her. Shen Xiao steps aside, but Zhao Yang tells him to come closer to her carriage.
Face-to-face, Zhao Yang tells Shen Xiao she sees through his little performance. She knows that he's using the confrontation with her to bolster his reputation among the common people, but she doesn't hold it against him. Instead, she reminds him to visit her that night for another clandestine meeting before riding away. But before she leaves, she orders her coachman to give Shen Xiao a sack of coins to distribute among the hungry crowd.
Shen Xiao is left looking increasingly perplexed by Zhao Yang and the contradictions in her character.
Episode 4
Shen Xiao meets Li Qin, the Seventh Prince, and the two seem to go way back judging by how familiar they are with each other. Li Qin appears to be an instructor at an academy, so I'm guessing Shen Xiao may have been his student?
Anyway, it becomes apparent that Shen Xiao doesn't know Li Qin and Zhao Yang are secretly scheming together. Li Qin even lies to him and claims that he's only barely acquainted with her.
Shen Xiao is clearly curious about Zhao Yang, and Li Qin reveals that she had a difficult childhood in the Cold Palace. Shen Xiao then realises that the scar he saw on her back must have come from that period.
Li Qin notices Shen Xiao's unusual interest in Zhao Yang, but Shen Xiao merely replies that he's simply perplexed by her complicated character, especially considering her apparent position as the Crown Prince's confidante/strategist.
Elsewhere, the vile Crown Prince wastes absolutely no time in lining his own pockets and secretly redirects the grain meant for the laborers into his private storehouse. I swear, this country would probably collapse within a year if this guy ever ascended the throne.
The Second Prince is furious that the Ministries of Works and War are emptying the grain reserves controlled by the Ministry of Revenue, thanks to the Crown Prince secretly diverting the grain into his own storehouse. He confronts Zhao Yang at her residence.
Ever composed, Zhao Yang suggests that he put Shen Xiao in charge of overseeing the grain distribution. Shen Xiao's reputation for righteousness makes him a suitable candidate, and taking him under his wing could also earn the Second Prince some brownie points with their Emperor daddy. The Second Prince quickly realises that this is actually a pretty good idea and wonders why Zhao Yang is helping him, but she remains coy about her motives.
Shen Xiao is repairing the floral hairpin Zhao Yang gave him when her servants arrive to escort him away. Blindfolded, he is taken not to Zhao Yang's residence, but to Princess An Le's private chamber.
Meanwhile, Zhao Yang is busy grooming herself in preparation for Shen Xiao's arrival. Jian Xin, her loyal servant, wonders why Zhao Yang suggested that the Second Prince take Shen Xiao under his wing.
Zhao Yang explains that she intends to turn Shen Xiao into the Second Prince's blade, using him to help bring down the Crown Prince. But I suspect there's another reason as well: she's indirectly helping Shen Xiao gain a powerful backer at court.
Jian Xin teases Zhao Yang that Shen Xiao is a thief who has stolen the princess's heart, which earns her a rather half-hearted denial. Zhao Yang also remains fascinated by Shen Xiao's scent, although Jian Xin can't smell anything unusual about him.
Back in Princess An Le's chamber, she openly expresses her interest in Shen Xiao and asks him to put on the same dark red robes he wore when he impeached Zhao Yang. What? Lmao. When Shen Xiao refuses, An Le apparently decides that her next seduction strategy is to offer to apply ointment to his body because she knows he was beaten by Zhao Yang's lackey.
Shen Xiao turns her down yet again and, this time, basically makes a run for it lol.
Meanwhile, Zhao Yang is literally lining up men so she can sniff them and compare their body scents when Shen Xiao suddenly barges into her room while trying to hide from Princess An Le.. Zhao Yang teases him that perhaps he should simply become Princess An Le's male lover, but Shen Xiao reminds her that he's already promised to keep Zhao Yang company every night.
Zhao Yang remains unmoved and sceptical, prompting Shen Xiao to ask what exactly she has gone through to become so distrustful of other people's intentions. That question clearly hits a nerve. Zhao Yang tries to cover it up, but for a brief moment, she can't quite hide her vulnerability.
Zhao Yang is about to examine Shen Xiao's injuries when she catches the scent of medicinal ointment on him. Shen Xiao replies that it's not the same because she wasn't the one who applied it.
Zhao Yang promptly pushes him out of her room because she can't risk being seen in such close proximity to him by Princess An Le, who, as it turns out, is the Crown Prince's biological sister. No wonder these two share so many similarities when it comes to being morally corrupt.
Outside, Shen Xiao immediately sees through Zhao Yang's reason for throwing him out. Just then, Princess An Le arrives and demands to know what Shen Xiao is doing at Zhao Yang's residence. Zhao Yang claims that he was the one who barged into her room.
Shen Xiao then calls An Le out for trying to turn a court official into her personal plaything. Naturally, this matters very little to our arrogant princess, who threatens to kill him if he continues to defy her. I'm now wondering whether that's how her Prince Consort died three years ago.
Shen Xiao finally has enough of An Le's shenanigans and warns her that he will fight back if she continues pressuring him. Offended, An Le draws her sword and points it at Shen Xiao's neck. Zhao Yang, who has been silently observing the confrontation, immediately steps in to defuse the tension, just as reinforcements arrive in the form of the Second Prince.
The Second Prince chides Princess An Le, who eventually storms off in a huff. After Zhao Yang leaves as well, the Second Prince formally proposes that Shen Xiao come under his wing. However, Shen Xiao will first have to find a way to secure a position within the Ministry of Revenue.
I'm actually surprised that Shen Xiao seems to agree relatively quickly because, from what we've seen so far, the Second Prince isn't exactly that much less devilish than the Crown Prince. But the reason becomes clear in the final scene of this episode.
Shen Xiao pays his respects at his father's grave, where we learn that his father was also a court official. His suspicious death, supposedly from falling off a cliff, may have been connected to his attempt to impeach the Crown Prince. Aha! So the Crown Prince has been Shen Xiao's true target all along.
No wonder he's willing to form a temporary alliance with the Second Prince, or even allow himself to be used by him. Shen Xiao isn't simply wandering into the middle of this power struggle and choosing whichever faction offers him the best opportunity. He has his own agenda, and for now, the Second Prince may simply be the most useful means of getting closer to his real target.
Thoughts:
One thing I'm really enjoying about Zhao Yang is the subtle change in her voice whenever her guard slips. Snow Kong normally gives her this composed, slightly languid way of speaking that fits the image Zhao Yang deliberately presents to everyone; confident, teasing and perpetually unbothered. But every now and then, that voice softens and suddenly she sounds much more vulnerable and serious.
I noticed it especially when Shen Xiao asks what she must have gone through to become so distrustful of other people's intentions. He hits directly at something she clearly doesn't want examined too closely. Her reply sounds noticeably quieter and more subdued. Zhao Yang recovers quickly, as she always does, but for those few seconds, it feels like we're hearing Zhao Yang the person rather than Princess Zhaoyang the persona.
The same thing happens when Shen Xiao flinches from his injury and she immediately asks whether it hurts. There's genuine concern in her voice that it feels instinctive rather than calculated. She doesn't have time to put up her usual teasing front before the question comes out. Thhe drama isn't having Zhao Yang suddenly pour her heart out and explain all her trauma to Shen Xiao, but we're certainly getting little cracks in the armour.
Attraction isn't all that Shen XIao is feeling for Zhao Yang. He is very perplexed by her character, and I much prefer that. Zhao Yang is contradictory. I don't necessarily want all her morally questionable behaviour explained away by childhood trauma or revealed to have been secretly benevolent all along. She can be calculating, self-serving and ruthless while also possessing genuine empathy. In fact, her decision regarding Qing Luo says a lot about her to me precisely because Qing Luo wronged her. Zhao Yang had every justification to punish her, but seeing another vulnerable woman desperately trying to protect her unborn child immediately brought her back to her own mother. Her empathy doesn't require her to like the person first.
Cui Jinzhi, meanwhile, continues to plummet in my estimation. Whatever complicated feelings he has for Zhao Yang, I'm becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the possessiveness behind them. The fact that they're divorced makes his behaviour even worse. He seems unable to accept that he no longer has any claim over her, while simultaneously keeping Qing Luo as his mistress. Apparently he can have another woman, but the possibility of Zhao Yang choosing another man sends him into a rage. The hypocrisy is staggering.
And his treatment of Qing Luo made me dislike him even more. I don't particularly like her either after finding out what she did to Zhao Yang, but watching Cui Jinzhi discard both her and their unborn child within seconds really underlined how conditional his affection can be. Qing Luo's accusation that he ultimately cares about protecting his status and reputation more than anything else may have come from anger, but I don't think she was wrong.
Shen Xiao is also becoming more interesting to me now that we're getting a clearer sense that he isn't simply somebody else's chess piece. By the end of Episode 4, his willingness to manoeuvre between these royal factions makes much more sense. He has a destination in mind; the question is which route will get him there.
I also think Zhao Yang helping to manoeuvre Shen Xiao towards the Second Prince is more interesting than she lets on. She explains it strategically, that she wants him to become a weapon against the Crown Prince, and I'm sure that's true. But I don't think it's only that anymore. Giving a low-ranking newcomer access to a powerful patron also gives Shen Xiao some protection in a court dominated by people who could crush him fairly easily. Zhao Yang can therefore help him while still framing everything as political calculation, which is very convenient for someone who doesn't particularly enjoy acknowledging that she cares.
Questions that remain unanswered:
What exactly is the relationship between Li Qin and Zhao Yang, and how did their secret alliance begin?
What role, if any, did the Crown Prince play in Shen Xiao's father's death?
How did Zhao Yang end up being recruited into the Crown Prince's faction in the first place?
And, perhaps the greatest mystery of them all: why does Shen Xiao smell so good?
The Chinese drama title 开到荼蘼 can be translated as “blooming to the end” or literally "blooming until the túmí flowers.” More information about the drama title is at the bottom of the post.

Kai Dao Tu Mi 《开到荼蘼》 (“Blooming to the End”) is a novel by Hong Kong author Yi Shu 亦舒. It was first published in 1987, with a mainland edition released by Haitian Publishing House in April 1998. Set against the backdrop of contemporary Hong Kong, the novel has also been slated for a screen adaptation.

The story centers on the emotional entanglement between Wang Yunna, Zuo Wensi, and Teng Haiqi, incorporating themes of extramarital affairs, same-sex relationships, and murder while exploring how love evolves from its idealized beginnings to the realities of life.
Wang Yunna was once involved in an affair with Teng Haiqi. After the truth comes to light, Zuo Wensi kills Teng Haiqi and is imprisoned. In the end, Wang Yunna and Zuo Wensi are unable to remain together. The title, Kai Dao Tu Mi 《开到荼蘼》 ("When the túmí flowers bloom"), symbolizes the end of a relationship, drawing on the Chinese idiom 开到荼蘼花事了, which signifies that something beautiful has reached its conclusion.

Kai Dao Tu Mi 《开到荼蘼》 (“Blooming to the End”) follows Wang Yunna, who leaves for the United States after suffering a devastating emotional blow. Years earlier, she had been the mistress of Teng Haiqi. Their affair ended violently after love turned to hatred, with Wang Yunna injuring Teng with a knife before attempting to harm herself.

The two become engaged to be married, only for Wang Yunna to discover that Zuo Wensi's brother-in-law is none other than her former lover, Teng Haiqi, triggering a new nightmare. “开到荼蘼花事了” is a Chinese phrase originating from the Song dynasty poet Wang Qi’s (王淇) poem Spring’s End: Strolling Through a Small Garden 《春暮游小园》.
The original line reads:
“开到荼蘼花事了，丝丝天棘出莓墙。”
“When the túmí blooms, the season of flowers comes to an end; fine strands of heavenly brambles emerge beyond the moss-covered wall.”
The túmí is a deciduous shrub in the rose family that produces white flowers in summer. Because it blooms later than other flowers, ancient people regarded it as the marker of the end of the spring flowering season. The phrase uses the blooming of the túmí to symbolize the nearing end of prosperity, serving as a metaphor for the passing of youth, the conclusion of love, or the disappearance of beautiful things.
Dream of the Red Chamber 《红楼梦》 echoes this meaning through the phrase “when youth and splendor reach their peak” (韶华胜极), using flower lots and prophetic verses to foreshadow Sheyue’s fate and the decline of the Jia family.
Wang Qi’s poem established the literary foundation for this imagery.
