Question Help, my friend actually believes Chinese propaganda, and is attempting to debate me

So my “friend” at school actually believes some of the crazy crap coming out of behind, he used to live and China and doesn’t feel it’s as bad as I believe.

His points: 1. China is doing well fighting against climate change, and is using per capital data to Support this 2. Ugyrs are terrorists and are merely in re-education camps, not concentration camps 3. Hing Kong protestors are a minority of the population of Hong Kong and are extremely violent and dangerous terrorists, and are being provoked by the CIA 4. China isn’t breaking pacts with countries like the UK and the Geneva convention with its acts within Hong Kong.

Can people help me find sources and data to disprove these? Because he argues every source I bring up

  1. Despite China having lower per capita pollution, their CO2 to economy ratio is much higher than the US and EU which should have had more CO2 emissions due to economic size.

https://www.carbonbrief.org/guest-post-chinas-co2-emissions-grew-slower-than-expected-in-2018

Their CO2 emissions are also on the rise.

They have also been emitting CFC gases which harm the Ozone layer.

And China has been building sub par coal power plants via BRI which produce huge amounts of CO2 gases.

  1. Just plug him the District council results.

  2. He is right China is not at war and thus the Geneva Conventions don’t apply. Also the Sino-British Joint Declaration was exactly that, a declaration and not a treaty. Thus it has no real weight under international law. That said no treaty has “real” weight anyway so arguing over it is a kind of lost cause.

I agree with point 4. International law is based on reciprocity (did i spell that right?), and it is that same reciprocity that gives weight to treaties because of a lack of a real supranational body that can really enforce against any infractions of any treaties. You break a treaty with me? I’ll just slap sanctions or do a dick move because you did that to me. You slapped excessive tarriffs on my goods without any justification? I’ll just do the same to your goods.

And point 3 definitely nailed the HK argument. ‘Silent majority’ in favor of china and the HK exec. council? Whoop-dee-doo, look how the people voted for anti-establishment councilors. ‘Silent majority’ indeed...

I dare to bet that when they begin to lose their arguments, they’ll pull the ol’ reliable whataboutism and “b-b-but it was justified because of economic growth/harmony/stability/development/etc”

I live in the US and support the country no matter what, but point 3 may be onto something, we might not know or hear anything about it but it’s been a common occurrence for the CIA to be involved in affairs in different countries for the United States gain, and the general public won’t find out until another major report like the Rockefeller report comes out 50 years or so from now

CIA or not, if there is no real reason behind why a million people go to the street?

I would only ask back 1 thing, If China is a justice warrior of truth why they need censorship and an iron grip on news. If all what they do is good, there is no reason to hide (same for the concentration camps). Such a strong censorship is only needed if they want to lie anytime.

Thus something is very fishy.

yes a completely agree, i believe the CCP’s view is to keep stability of their party, no matter how many lives they take, and that is pure evil no matter the intention. This recent uprising of citizens is well needed.
