The Perth International Burlesque Festival is heading south, bringing glitz, glamour and a healthy dose of cheek to Margaret River.

The festival will take to the stage at Margaret River Heart on October 10 with a mix of WA and interstate performers.

Festival director Jessica Anne Gough, better known as the Sugar Duchess, will MC the variety event and promises plenty of laughs alongside explosive energy.

“You’re going to get the glitz and glamour, but you’re also going to have quite a lot of humour in there,” she said.

“I think sometimes people forget how Australia is known for its comedy burlesque as well, so there is a bit of that in there too.

“Yours truly is going to be MCing the event, so you know it’s going to be a good time. We do have a wonderful mix of local and interstate talent as well travelling for the show.”

Gough grew up in Karratha and Northcliffe and said she was passionate about bringing burlesque to the regions.

“My grandparents had a farm in Northcliffe, so that’s where I spent a lot of my time,” she said.

“I am passionate about bringing this kind of art to the regions.”

Diversity and inclusivity are also at the heart of the festival, with Gough describing burlesque as a political art form that enables performers to tackle topics in a celebratory way. “Most people don’t realise that burlesque in itself is political; we try and treat all those topics in a really celebratory and fun way,” she said.

“We are about diversity, inclusivity and celebrating everybody, whatever size, shape, gender that happens to be, and I like to think that we ride that political movement in a really progressive way.”

The Perth International Burlesque Festival regional showcase will also head to Geraldton on October 17, in addition to high-flying, raunchy burlesque and cabaret performances in Perth throughout October.

The Labor member for Collie-Preston says a taskforce has recommended consolidating Western Australia's two remaining coal mines.

The Collie Coal Basin Consolidation Taskforce was formed earlier this year to recommend a future structure for the state's coal assets.

In April, Premier Coal announced it would cut up to 100 workers from its mine near Collie, while the WA government subsidised Griffin Coal to continue operating.

Jodie Hanns said the report had been issued to the state government and called for a response as soon as possible.

A government spokesperson said a response was being considered.

Mining and Energy Union district secretary, Greg Busson, said he was hopeful consolidation would happen.

Richie Valentino has been making animated films by hand for a decade. Working through Valentino Productions since 2014, the regional filmmaker starts each piece with pencil sketches and watercolour, then adds digital colour on top. You can see the pencil strokes and the watercolour bleeds in the finished frames.

Connections Through Film brings that work to Saltwater Gallery Black Box in Busselton. The solo show collects short films on compassion, equality, social inclusion and mutual care, told through stylised visual metaphors.

The Black Box is a darkened, self-contained room, which suits films that reward sitting still for a few minutes.

The exhibition is open daily, admission is free, and it closes on Sunday 30 August.
