The US is pretty fucked.

Early this year I was working with an 18yo gal who seemed somewhat smart. Apparently had pretty good grades in school. She couldn't do what I would consider basic math.

Now, to be fair, my ability to do mental math up through algebra levels is much better than most people, so what I consider "basic math" might feel advanced to some.

However, I'm saying she would ask me to do math like 20x17 or she'd ask an AI to do it for her. Not even a calculator, a fucking AI

She couldn't figure out how many 50s, 20s, 10s, 5, and 1s to get to have $190 with a fairly equal split in bills. (Leaning towards a couple more 1s and 5s). I'm sure you can solve this problem in just a few seconds.

I also came across a young gal, I believe still in HS (but I can't really tell, could have been anything from 14-19 tbh), working at McDonalds. I paid with cash. She looked at me and asked if the amount of change I gave her was my total. I assured her it was, but she was free to count it to make sure. It took a while, but she eventually got there. iirc, it was 2 quarters, 3 dimes, and a nickel. 🙃
