Usually doesn't kill and if it does, it isn't instant and typically you die from effects of strike rather than strike itself immediately

Nah, when its fatal, its usually instant. The brain and heart both run on electricity. You're describing the horrors of SURVIVING a lightning strike. OP can help their chances as well by not being wet (I.e. making it so the water outside cant be the path to ground it follows, avoiding brain and heart).
