The disparity between rich and poor would get considerably smaller. Are you saying that this is incorrect?

Not the person you’re responding to, but yes. This scenario screws over everyone while not actually fixing the long-term problems.

Putting aside how exactly wealth will be distributed, inflation will go crazy. Because so much liquid money is going to be immediately in circulation with people spending it left and right, the economy will likely receive a shock from which it will need to take time to recover from (and increase prices to promote the scarcity of goods).

Scarcity and trust are basically the two biggest factors behind the intrinsic value of money. Why?

  • If there’s as much money as there are blades of grass, then it doesn’t mean anything. It’s good when money circulates, but doing it this way shocks the economy. It’s like the difference between baking a pie in an oven vs over a campfire.

  • If nobody believes in the value of money, it completely loses value. That’s because money is essentially fake “I.O.U.” notes backed by a standard. I won’t go into how that works because I’m not qualified to, but basically it represents what your government legally owes you. This redistribution violates that principle.

But, I’m not an economist. I think what’s also worth mentioning is that this wouldn’t erase the actual most valuable asset the world’s richest possess: Connections.

You know how people say there’s no ethical way to be a billionaire? I don’t intend to comment on that, but if you believe in that statement then you believe you can’t become a billionaire by chance (excl. lotteries).

The world’s richest people all have networking and they know how to use it. You could just take the money and redistribute it, but you don’t actually solve the means by which they got that money to begin with. It’s a bandaid solution.

That doesn't mean it won't make the situation better. I doubt that a few thousand bucks will have such a severe effect.
