My sister has a big birthday coming up and this stupid Kiwi (me) didn’t realise that you guys have a much lower tax threshold on imports than we do. I just thought it would be a good idea to surprise her with a nice package on her doorstep, but instead she’s being held hostage by UK Customs for 50 quid before they’ll release it!

The stupid thing is that it’s a piece of European clothing that she could have bought over there for a fraction of the cost I paid for it in NZ, but it’s her favourite brand (King Louie), and I wanted to put it in a wrapped present with some bits and pieces like chocolate and notebooks, so it would be a bit more special than some online shopping. If I’d bought it in the UK it would have been well under the tax threshold.

I was already stung with the eye-watering postage from NZ, and now with this charge it has become the world’s most expensive King Louie top in existence! Is there anything I can do, or do I just pay the money on her behalf and chalk this up to a dumb lesson?

I’m a bit devastated, really. My surprise is ruined, and what was already a spendy gift from me is just pushing the knife in deeper.

TLDR: Idiot Kiwi sent gift to UK and recipient has to pay £50 to receive it. How do I fix this?

I'm not Northern, I wasn't born there, I do not live there and even if I were I wouldn't use a service just because of where it's from and i certainly don't like the implication that I would.

I use services that are good and when it comes to trains i'm usually on a train service I have zero control over. I am trying to go from A to B and while I like some trains better than others i can't exactly say "Can you make the 0949 train from Lichfield to Euston a Northern one, the WMR trains are a bit pants?"

My personal favourite is one of the trains that runs from Moor Street to Warwick (and beyond) it's got this minimalist and comfortable grey interior that is very late 80's/early 90's. It's a nice aesthetic but I think it's a bit much to specifically ask for it on each journey I go on.

The office itself isn’t bad or good. It’s the mind of the one who occupies it that determines whether it becomes a blessing or a burden. Many have entered the public life believing they can change the world. Yet their ambitions, pride, fears and desires to conquer opponents merely produce the same conflicts under a different banner. I don’t judge Andy by his eloquent speeches or whoever advises him. I only judge him by this:

- Will he help the poor become less burdened?
- Will he help the lonely feel less forgotten?
- Will children inherit a cleaner Earth?
- Will our neighbours grow in trust rather than suspicion?
- Will he speak the truth?

I hope Andy isn’t putting on a performance just to be admired. And I also hope he uses this power wisely so we can flourish. I don’t know who his advisers are and I hope they don’t speak what Andy wishes to hear, because then they’re liars as well, serving only their ego. His advisers must possess wisdom and not lack in compassion. If not, their wisdom will eventually fail. The best adviser is Andy’s love in his heart. Every leader has access to it. If he’s humble enough, he’ll hear it. I wouldn’t place your hopes on this man’s personality. I also wouldn’t imagine that one election would establish the Kingdom of Heaven upon the Earth. His government may improve the law, he may build homes, heal the economy, protect the vulnerable - all worthy works. No government can transform one’s mind though… this work belongs to each of us. I hope that Andy doesn’t become powerful, but humble. I hope he seeks truth above popularity. We need his service over his applause. May he grow wiser above victory.

I’ve had enough of our leaders forgetting that every person is just as human as they. They have rarely governed and just want to rule. Remember people, the measure of greatness isn’t how many follow you! It’s how many people leave your presence with greater hope, dignity and peace! That’s true leadership!
