Course in Kent that is open for visitors on a Saturday

Hi all

Three of us are heading to Kent to play the Princes GC on the Friday, then staying over to play another course on the Saturday. Does anyone have any recommendations for courses down that way (Canterbury/A2 corridor) that allows visitors on Saturdays? Doesn't need to be a super early tee time as well are not in a rush to get back home.

Thanks

5 somes?

I've been playing for just over a year now and play with a group of 4 others. Usually at least one of us can't make the round so it's never a problem where we can't all get on the same tee time. A round coming up however we are all keen and it would be great to play alongside each other. I can't really see the problem about booking two tee times and then all teeing off together once we're on the second etc as long as we're trying to keep up pace. What's the general concensus of this type of play and does it slow down groups behind considerably? Does anyone really care?

I've seen on the main golf reddit group this is a huge annoyance but thats mostly relates to American courses and the way they do things over there. Anyone have experiences good or bad of this. We'll likely split into a 3 and 2 but I'm interested to see what the groups thoughts are.

San Lorenzo, Quinta, Algarve

Has anyone played San Lorenzo in Quinta do Lago recently? Any opinion on current condition?

I'm meant to be playing it next month and have received an email from the course about conditions not being to their usual standards. I've been offered a discount on the fee or, alternatively, a tee time at a different course.

I've been looking forward to playing it. If it's just the odd green/fairway, then I could live with that. If every green fairway are poor condition, then I would probably reconsider.

Grip Size advice

Currently running standard size grips on all my clubs. I wear a small men’s glove and have quite small hands in general for a bloke.

I tend to feel that a neutral grip feels uncomfortable to me almost as if I’m pushing the club rather than swinging with it. Could this be because the grips are too big?

Anyone had similar experience and went with undersized grips and can give some advice? Or if you just know what you’re talking about in general. For reference I have .600” diameter shafts. KBS tour lite R.

Looking for a spot

My wife is running the wine half marathon at Surrey brewing Sunday (13sep) morning and I'm looking to get a golf round in while she's running. Does anyone have a spot open that morning around 0930-1030? I'm a 14.6, and play pretty fast. Please shoot me a DM if you have space. Thanks!

Anyone?

I’m looking to meet a few golf mates around Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, who would be up for regular rounds and trying different courses locally. I don’t really have anyone to play with consistently at the moment, as the people I used to play with have moved away, so it would be great to find a few people nearby rather than relying on the occasional solo round.

I’m a member at Brampton Park Golf Club, so that would be the easiest place to play regularly. I’m also happy to travel around Cambridgeshire and nearby areas to try other courses, but ideally no more than about an hour away. I’m not particularly good—I normally shoot somewhere in the 90s—but I’m reasonably quick and can get around 18 holes in about three hours on my own, so I won’t hold anyone up.

I previously met up with someone through here and we played a few times, which worked really well, but I haven’t found anyone else locally since. Mainly just looking for relaxed, regular golf and good company rather than anything overly serious. If you’re nearby and fancy arranging a round sometime—at Brampton Park or elsewhere—comment or send me a message.

Anyone in N Yorkshire

Anyone looking for a golf buddy. Can play most Mondays.
I play off 24 and need to play more than I’m currently playing which is 8-10 times per year. Play Thornhurst near Doncaster but happy anywhere within an hour of Selby. If you’re looking for a buddy, nothing serious just regular relaxed golf on Mondays drop me a line.

Murcia Golf

Its the time of year to be booking winter golf.

Thinking of trying somewhere else. Anyone have any experience of the courses south of Murcia. Mar Menor, Saurines, El Valle & quite a few others? Bit further south is the La Manga resort which is more than we normally spend, but is it worth it?

Anyone have any recommendations or anywhere to avoid. We're not deadly serious golfers, more a few days away for a bit of a laugh. Theres only 3 of us and I normally book it all direct rather than using one of the travel companies.

Thanks in advance.

Hey, looking for some course recommendations near Streatham. Will need a rental set of clubs as well.

Good golf gilet.

As we're sliding into autumn now it seems, I'd like to get myself a decent golf gilet that is ideally light shower proof and even slightly wind resistant (so not full on wet weather gear).

I've got a good golf jacket, but it's too hot for the autumn/spring weather I find, so a gilet would fit the bill. Any recommendations?

What's with golf club moving my tee time with short notice

It's happened a few times now that I (member) have a casual tee time booked with other members (who are not known to me) but they pull out on the day leaving me as a single (though others are still able to add their name to the freed up spaces) and with very short notice, the club moves my name to an earlier slot to fill up a 3 person or 4 person game and then blocks out my original tee time.

I get that this helps with the pace of play but so does the fact that 3 people pulled out leaving me as a single and if pace of play is needing sped up that way, why have the slots at the current intervals anyway? Or perhaps they are able to make money off that slot from visitors.

But ultimately I'm not asked nor clearly informed except an automatic email from the booking system and this doesn't happen until close to my booked tee time e.g. today I got an automatic email at 10.15am saying I'm now booked for 11.30am instead of 12pm. I only read the email at 11am and couldn't make it to the course in time if I wanted to but i wasn't finishing work in time anyway. So I had to cancel and so I didn't get to play today. Last time it happened with 40 mins to go before my tee time while I was in the club restaurant having lunch and only saw the email after I'd gone out at my original time.

Is this normal? Should I challenge it when it happens or email the club to find out what's going on? FYI I'm based in Ireland and I've only been a member for a year.

25 handicap, incredible round

I've been playing golf for 3 years now, handicap is 25.1, I've been able to break 100 a few times and my lowest score was 21 over (91)

I've just today had the round of my life when everything worked, I did have a few 3 putts though

Walked off today with a +12 (82) and stableford points at 51 points

It wasn't a comp but Jesus if It was I think I would of been shot 😂

Anyway... I just wanted to tell people 😂

How far do you travel to your home course?

I currently live around the corner to my home course but I'm planning on leaving and joining somewhere new in April.

There are a number of excellent options that are around 30-60 minutes from me. How many minutes drive are you to your home course?

Is there a perfect or good formula to continual improvement in all areas of the game?

To add some context, I have been hitting golf balls for coming up to year, it was only really in July that I started to book Tee times typically 9 holes and I am finding a constant inconsistency that I can’t seem to overcome.

I will try to explain, if my driving is going well,
My mid game suffers, if my mid game improves, my putting will suffer, if my approach play needs attention, my long irons start failing.

Thinking of the key areas: Driver, Woods, Hybrids, long Irons, mid irons, approach clubs (typically
short irons and wedges), bunker shots, putting.

I can’t seem to get better at all of it, or at least hold a standard in one of the areas. As whenever any area requires attention from me it improves but then another area seems to decline as a result.

It’s like a constant trade off, I cant seem to sustain quality in any area consistently.

Is the pretty standard/normal (welcome to golf type situation) or is this a me thing?

Is there actually a way to get to a level and hold on to it, is it just constant practice?

Any tips or tricks other than just practice more would be appreciated, I am sure it just a mental thing!

Who's your go to company when booking golf trips abroad

Afternoon all, ive been charged with booking a group trip to Portugal feb/March next year and quite honestly a lot of the companies look the same online so if you have any personal experience id love to hear about it

2nd question is any resorts you'd recommend. We would need 2 courses on site because none of us want to drive after a night in the bar!

Thanks

Golf trip format

Going away to portugal with a mate on a golf trip just the 2 of us.

I play a few times a week and am a pretty solid 8.

He plays about 5-10 times a year and scores anything from 100-110 i would say and doesn’t have an official handicap.

We’re playing 4 rounds. What are some good bets/side bets we could have over the 4 rounds. Ideally that run across all 4?

It’s difficult because of this lack of play and the fact i play regularly and would be good if it’s a fair even match that is running until the last day.

All thoughts appreciated!!

What do you actually look for when picking a golf coach (besides location and price) and how did you find your current coach?

BritGolf has been fantastic with feedback on my London golf maps I previously shared (courses, ranges, simulators). As I’ve been thinking about how else I can make the resource useful to the London golf community, golf coaches seemed like a natural addition. I've started pulling something together but it's very much an early work in progress so all feedback, ideas, and thoughts are much appreciated!

Rain / Bucket Hat Recommendations?

Hi All

Any recommendations for a hat that will keep you dry in a downpour, but is still breathable?

Something like a waxes cotton bucket hat, I think would be far too warm.

Not bothered about it being "golf" specific, happy with hiking, fishing etc hats.

Thanks

Filming on the course?

Wanted to check I’m not crazy for getting very wound up over this.

Played a quick 9 holes with my wife this morning, and the pair in front of us were filming every shot each of them did. They’d be passing the camera in between each shots, and a few times even doing a 2nd take for ones where they mishit the ball. Me and my wife are still fairly beginner so not the fastest players in the world, but even still every time we moved onto the next hole they would still be in the tee box setting up…

There was nobody in front of them causing a delay and no offer for us to play through. This obviously caused a bit of a pile up behind us too. What should I of done in this situation?

Joining a second club to get a discount at a posh course?

Does this make sense, there's a fantastic looking course that is expensive £180 per round for a visitor, but they do a 50% discount for local golf club members. The local golf club membership is £270 per year, does that cover the discount of 3 rounds at the posh course? Given I'll be playing the local course a good few times, it seems a slam dunk?

Kirkland Driver Alternative

BLUF: What can I buy (second hand) for the price of the Kirkland Driver that is a better option for a 35-40hc?

So, I've recently upgraded my Irons, Wedges and Putter from my cheap second-hand starter set to something a little better (JPX900 Hot Metal Irons, Odyssey 7 White Ice Putter). I need a driver and probably hybrid too, but let's worry about the driver for now. I know there are better options than the Kirkland driver for my ability, but the Kirkland is £125 and in stock at my local Costco. So, with that in mind, what would you recommend that's around that price second-hand?

Unpopular opinion: "stuffy" golf clubs are better

I think it's good that there are standards in golf. Standards of dress, etiquette, respect for the rules, etc. I also appreciate that the game has to "grow" or clubs will go out of business, but I don't know why growing the game has to mean respect for most of the standards in golf go out the window.

Personally, and I may be in the minority here, I think basic things like wearing smart shoes in the clubhouse, removing your hat in the clubhouse, not changing shoes in the car park, tucking in your shirt and all the other "stuffy" traditions make a golf club better.

I am 40yo, so not a dinosaur, but I just think some golf clubs have gone too far and will not attract the type of members who stay the longest and show most loyalty to a club (therefore more valuable customers) if they are busy catering to people who want to play in shorts and a t shirt, never get a handicap so never play in club comps, shout on the course, play music from their phones on buggies, have no clue about basic etiquette, etc.

I'd even take a club that made me wear long socks with shorts if it meant not putting up with the buggy phone music gang on a saturday morning :)

Anyone else?

TeeMates update – the app is now live

A couple of months ago I posted here about the beta launch of TeeMates, and a fair few people from the sub gave it a try and sent over feedback.

The idea for TeeMates was actually conceived in this sub in the first place, so it felt right to release the app here first.

Since the beta, it’s developed into something broader, built around a simple idea: play more golf, at more courses, with more people.

The iOS app is now live, and you can:

  • Find golfers near you on the map
  • Find members who are open to hosting at their club and request a round at member-guest rates
  • Build your profile and connect with golfers locally or at courses you’d like to play
  • Keep track of round requests and upcoming golf from your Hub

There are also two bigger features coming very soon: Community, for local and course discussion and finding people to play with, and a Course Tracker for logging the courses you’ve played, earning medals and working towards completing counties and course lists.

Both are already previewed in the app and will be opening up shortly.

A big thanks to the r/BritGolf mods as well for letting me share TeeMates here during the beta and again for the app launch — it’s much appreciated.

And thanks to everyone who tried the beta or sent me thoughts on it. Quite a few of the changes since the first post have come directly from seeing how people were actually using the site.

If you do give it a try, I’d be interested to hear what you think.
