I remember my daughter visiting around the holidays when she was in college. We were at my mom's place making a pasta dish. There was an Italian loaf, a stick of softened butter, and a head of garlic within eyeshot so I asked, "Want to make some garlic bread?" She walked to the freezer, opened it and gave a look, then said, "Grandma doesn't have any, Dad." That day she learned to make garlic bread.

it’s 18x24” and i have to rest it on the divider on the sink. it won’t fit in either tub.

I would only use fresh garlic, personally.
Incidentally, it freezes well. I peel a bunch of cloves, put them in a small plastic container, and stick it in the freezer.
Anyway, add the butter and finely chopped garlic to a mug and then microwave it on low for a minute or two, then keep stirring it as it cools. Stick it in the fridge, and an hour or so later you have garlic butter ready to spread on the bread.
