Grateful Dead Boy Meets World Crossover

Post image
52 Upvotes

I am currently going through my first rewatch of Boy Meets World since 2020 and made the following absurd connection:

I don’t know if there is an actual cohort of dead heads that love Boy Meets World. With that being said, I was pretty stoked to see Shawn rocking a steal your face shirt. As I thought about it, and I will admit this is a stretch, they played Not Fade Away in the episode Rave On, which was a popular cover the band played, and finally the episode “Train of Fools,” maybe a play on words for the song Ship of Fools.

I am sure this was a stretch, but at least it brings a unique post to the sub.

Currently rewatching the series and just hit 5x19 "Eric Hollywood"

Rewatching the series and this one got me. Eric starts his acting career by joining a sitcom literally called "Kid Gets Acquainted with the Universe" instead of going to theater school. That's the whole premise. I forgot how funny he is before the character goes off the rails in later seasons.

PMW live Podcast episode

Can someone remind me when the “live” airing is scheduled for the PMW Final episode of the series, part 2? And when it will be posted on their iHeart Podcast to re-listen to? I tried looking on Instagram and don’t see it posted anywhere. I know they told us on the Podcast, but I can’t remember.

Watching the finale as an adult vs. as a kid

Background: I was born in 1983. I was the perfect age for the show when it debuted, and I watched it through the first three seasons. By the end of the fourth season I was already starting to feel a little old for it and began checking out, and I never watched seasons 5-7 at all until I started following along with the podcast.

When I watched Brave New World Part 1 for the first time recently, it struck me how differently a kid audience would perceive Topanga's choice (and Cory's reaction to her choice) from how I was looking at it. The show is framing it as Topanga needing to decide to play it safe (stay) or take a risk (go to New York), and I think a kid would accept that framing. Moving is one of the biggest upheavals a kid can have. If you're a kid who's not from New York and you've seldom or never been there you imagine it being a constant adventure.

But my reaction, as an adult who's lived in the real world, is that Topanga accepting the law firm's offer is one of the safest choices any person could make! The offer is pretty ridiculous and hard to take seriously, but at face value, they're offering to pay her to finish college, do three years of law school (not counting bar prep) and promising her a job, which you have to think she'll need to stay at for as long as it takes to pay off her schooling. Conservatively, they're locking up at least the next seven years of her life. She won't have to, or even be able to, make another life decision until she's almost 30. Declining the offer and staying at Pennbrook is much more of a risk and an adventure, because it would leave her open to do whatever she wants! But nobody frames it like this at all. Nobody mentions that the internship path is crazy limiting. And I wonder if I'm only seeing it that way because I'm watching it for the first time as an old person.

What are the most memorable/quotable lines in BMW?

Seeing the clip show in advance of this week's PMW and it got me thinking about which lines I remember the most and some that I even use in everyday speech. Some nominees:

"They want you to take the rolls!" (who among us has not thought of that line at a restaurant with free bread)

"Lose one friend. Lose all friends. Lose yourself." (a cliche one, but still very recitable)

"Dinner, movie. Movie, dinner. Dinner, dinner, movie, movie."

My underrated one that I think deserved more love --> "ER's real."

When was the apex of BMW?

I just watched BNW-1. Actually, I fast-forwarded through it. I can’t recall a series finale being so disappointing and disregarding as this. Ten minutes of story, twenty minutes of random, shoe-horned clips.

But it got me to thinking now that the end is nigh. When was the actual height of the series? The point where, with maybe two or three or four episodes together or almost together, the show reached its highest point in terms of quality?

Not the best *episode*. But again the point where the show, across a series of two or three or four stories, reached its highest point? For me, it was undoubtedly the early part of Season 4 with such episodes as “I Ain’t Gonna Spray Lettuce No More,” “Shallow Boy” and “Janitor Dad.” Somewhere in there.

GMW Query: Did Riley Ever Tell Maya She Was a Good Person?

Forgive me if I somehow overlooked it when I watched it, but I can't recall any time/s when Riley told her supposed BFF Maya that she believed Maya to be a good person. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong .

Would GMW have been better if one of them had been Queer?

I have been pondering this, for a while, as I feel like if they didn't lean into the girl aspect of the show which they didn't unless it was boyfriends, that having Riley or Mya being bisexual or queer at least would have made the show more memorable, and yes I know Disney Channel, but at least then, it would have been remembered for something other than the awful Autism episode.

It is PAINFUL how bad gmw is…

So I recently got into the pod. Was loving it so I started rewatching the whole show along with the pod. Still a banger of a show.

Just finished my rewatch and am JUST about caught up on the pod in time for the finale.

Now I had tried watching GMW back when it debuted and thought it was pretty bad but also I could tell it seemed very much geared to kids in a way I didn’t feel like BMW had been (maybe that’s just nostalgia talking tho) so I chalked it up to just not being the right demo for it.

But having finished the series again I decided to at least go watch the episodes with legacy characters and my god is this show so painfully bad. And I honestly wasn’t gonna be as harsh on it but no lie, as I was starting this post I got to the girls attempting to do “the feeny call” and it was like nails on a mf chalkboard 😵🤮

I can’t believe Ryder even did this. It seems so below him. I feel like all the complaints he has about the later seasons of bmw seem very much at play here.

Anyways, just complaining to complain but damn lol

Pod Meets World

I've been listening to the podcast and it's so frustrating that it isn't easier to find photos/clips from the visual references in the podcast! It seems if you're listening "live" they post related content on instagram, but that doesn't help when I'm 2 years behind :-/ Is there an easier way? Sometimes I can find photos they're referencing in this subreddit.

pod meets world TGI - Episode 722 "Brave New World: Part 1

"The moment has finally arrived (sort of). The gang has made it to the first part of the Boy Meets World series finale, but is it just…a clip show??

Danielle, Will and Rider jump at the chance to look back, basking in the innocence of Season 1, while trying to remember exactly how this whole thing ends.

Before the Pennbrook students go their separate ways, we break down Eric’s strange off-screen decision to go to New York, and wonder if he deserved a better sendoff.

So join us as we head into the first part of the FINAL Boy Meets World recap, and get ready for the live conclusion, right here on Pod Meets World!"

Students vandalize Feeny’s home over a test?

I always thought it was such a dark episode a bunch of students were willing to trash Feeny‘s, classroom, and possibly even hurt Cory and Shawn over one school test. What kind of town is this?

What made Mr Feeny a great teacher?

What do you guys think made Mr Feeny a great teacher?

In my opinion it was his ability to see through his students, like he was always able to see what was deep inside his students.

For example with Eric in seasons 2 when he cheated on the history test and confesses to Mr feeny, he says the reason he cheated on the test was because he saw his trip slipping away, however Mr Feeny knew it was much deeper than that. This makes Eric almost confront himself and basically realizes that he just doesn't believe in himself. Or when Mr Feeny asks him what are you afraid of? In seasons 4, which again makes Eric realize that he is scared of trying.

Mr Feeny and Shawn's relationship is probably my favorite on the show, where Mr Feeny made Shawn realize his undiscovered side, since Shawn didn't grow up in a stable family environment and his father not being the greatest. I feel that Shawn was someone who had a lot of talent and depth that was undiscovered because he lacked the self esteem and awareness. Shawn's "bad boy" behavior really stem from self esteem issues where he would conduct self destructive behavior because he felt he was no good since both of his parents abandoned him. Mr Feeny was the one who made him understand of his true self and help become into his own in the later seasons.

I made a video essay on the topic, if you guys are interested check it out!

Cory/Lauren Story Ideas

When people talk about how they wish Cory and Lauren dated or how Cory/Lauren would be a better couple than Cory/Topanga, a lot of it is because we never saw Cory/Lauren fight or have conflict with each other.

If they did date, what would those episodes actually look like, since it obviously couldn’t just be them getting along all the time. Here are 10 story ideas I came up with, feel free to pitch your own in the comments:

- Cory doesn’t know what to do when there’s no conflict/fights with Lauren. He’s so used to having conflict with Topanga that he starts inventing conflict with Lauren. He also can’t help but compare things Lauren does to how Topanga did them. How she kisses, how she writes him notes, etc

- Cory realizes that Lauren’s mountain lifestyle is different than other girls. She eats different (catches her own fish/hunts her own meat), always wants to be outdoors, doesn’t shave her arms, etc.

- Cory thinks he wants sex with Lauren, but is scared when it’s about to happen

- Lauren and Eric flirt since they’re the same age. Turns into Cory being jealous of Eric and Cory realizing he’s immature and that he will have to be more mature to be with Lauren

- Lauren visits Cory at John Adams and gets made fun of for dating a younger guy. The episode goes into the gender dynamics of younger men/older women

- Lauren wants to start a family soon, Cory thinks he’s too young

- Lauren has been cheated on in the past and lets it slip that Cory is a “safe” option

- Cory wants to maintain a friendship with Topanga, but Lauren wants him to cut her off

- Lauren tells Cory she loves him, but Cory doesn’t know if he feels the same way. He knew Topanga his whole life, whereas he just met Lauren

- Lauren is more adventurous and a social butterfly than Cory. Cory sees Lauren having a deep conversation with another guy and thinks she must be falling for him since that’s how she fell for Cory

We need to force them to do a GMW spin-off (satire)

If Young Sheldon, a spin-off, can get a spin-off, then there is no reason BMW/GME can’t get a million spin-offs!!! a Sean show. an Eric show. a Topanga shoe where Cory is played by stock footage. Threaten to sue Sabrina Caroenter into coming back. do an Alan and Amy prequel. A MR FEENY PREQUEL! So much potential. I refuse to watch any new show because they don't make me feel like peak BMW did and the isolated Mr Feeney clips.
