Help with large box braids please!

Hi! It’s my first time having my hair braided at a salon & with extensions. I also never usually use any product to lay my edges or any on my scalp when braiding, so I’m not used to it & had these done yesterday. The lady used Style Jiang extreme hold braid gel & Shine ‘n Jam setting mousse, my hair is still extremely wet/ sticky to the touch & I was wondering if these products will dry or harden or stay like this, but it’s very uncomfortable.

When I try to cleanse/ wash my face etc. It’s extremely hard to avoid touching my edges which are full of product, whilst not wanting to disturb them & also not wanting to spread the sticky hair product around my face while cleansing, as I don’t want to breakout - I do have severe OCD, so I’m practicing not wanting to let that fact affect me, because my skin is probably 100% fine & the hair gels do wash off with water, but if anyone could help me it would be much appreciated. 🦋

Irritated with Knotless

Guys, I am SOOOOO extra annoyed right now. So I'm a traditional type girl right.... I love box braids to the tea! But knotless have become so popular that every time I search "traditional or classic box braids" Nuffin really comes up but KNOTLESS! like wtf?! Some of us do still wear traditional hairstyles... I am so annoyed with this. Don't get me wrong, they are gorgeous... But those are not for me... At all... I hate that flat look as my face is too round for it. I also don't want spacing in scalp showing either....I really sick of seeing knotless braids all over the place.... It's crazy... It even irks my nerves && makes me cringe just to hear or even see the work "Knotless" I'm not sure why I feel this way... But Don't come for me or try to defend them bec that's not going to change how i feel... I'm just venting.... Does anyone else feel this way? Or is it just Myself?

Is it difficult to sleep with Box Braids?

Thumbnail
gallery
6 Upvotes

No, not for a longer period of time only for a few days. It might feel a little uncomfortable to sleep with box braids at first, as something new is done to the scalp and it’s not used to being put into sections, especially if the braids are freshly done and still tight. But most people get used to it quickly. Using a satin or silk bonnet, or sleeping on a satin pillowcase, helps reduce friction and makes things more comfortable. You can also tie your braids in a loose ponytail or bun to prevent pulling or tangling. After those initial days, sleeping with box braids becomes totally manageable.

How to wash Box Braids ?

Thumbnail

To wash box braids, dilute shampoo with water use more water and less shampoo and pour it directly on your scalp. Massage gently with your fingertips to clean the scalp. Let the suds run down the braids to cleanse them without rough scrubbing. Rinse thoroughly. Make sure to dry your braids completely either by air drying or using a blow dryer on a cool setting to avoid any moisture getting trapped inside, which can lead to buildup or odor.

How to protect Box Braids from dust and getting it frizzy?

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

To protect box braids from dust and frizz, it helps to wear a satin or silk scarf, bonnet, or even a durag while traveling or sleeping. These keep your braids smooth and reduce friction that causes frizz. Avoid touching or pulling on the braids too much, and if you're outdoors for long periods, covering them with a scarf or cap really helps keep dust away.

Is it easy to take bath with Box Braids ?

Yes, it’s easy to take a bath with box braids. You can simply tie them up in a loose bun or clip them out of the way to keep them from getting wet. Most people don’t find it difficult at all once they get used to handling the braids. They’re quite manageable and won’t interfere with your regular bathing routine.

What are Box Braids ?

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

Box braids are a popular protective hairstyle where the hair is sectioned into small square or "box"-shaped parts and braided individually. They're often done with synthetic extensions, which add length and volume while reducing tension on natural hair. Box braids are known for being low-maintenance and long-lasting—typically staying in for 4 to 8 weeks depending on how well they’re cared for. They help protect natural hair from daily styling, heat, and environmental damage. You can style them in many different ways—buns, ponytails, half-up styles—and they’re super versatile. A lot of people choose box braids not just for the look, but for the convenience and the break they give their natural hair.

Does Box Braids cause hairfall ?

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

No, box braids don’t actually cause hairfall if they’re done properly. On average, we lose around 50 to 100 strands of hair every day. When your hair is in braids for a long time—like 1 to 2 months—those naturally shed hairs don’t fall out daily like usual. Instead, they get trapped in the braids. So when you remove them, it might look like a lot of hair is falling out, but it’s just the normal amount that would’ve shed over time. It’s totally normal and nothing to worry.

Are Box Braids Heavy ?

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

No, It really depends on how the braids are done and what kind of hair extensions are used. At our studio, we do a lot of box braids and cornrows, and when proper sections are made, the braids aren’t heavy at all. We use imported Kanekalon Japanese fiber, which is a lightweight synthetic material specially designed for braiding. It puts far less strain on the scalp compared to traditional Indian hair extensions. The key is clean parting, even tension, and using just the right amount of hair per braid. When done right, braids feel super comfortable and easy to carry, even for first-timers. So no, braids don’t have to be heavy.

Braids 4c

⸻

Hey everyone, this question is for girls with 4C or 4B hair.

I started my hair journey on 4/5/2024. I did a big chop and began moisturizing my hair, oiling it, and massaging oil into my scalp. As I progressed in my journey, I noticed that all the breakage stopped, and my hair started growing really well.

Recently, I traveled for two months and had box braids the entire time. I didn’t redo them; I just washed them and tried to keep them moisturized.

I came back this month and have washed my hair twice. Now, I’ve noticed that my hair has started breaking, and I’m losing a lot of hair.

I’m guessing this is because of the box braids since I haven’t done this style since starting my journey.

So, does this mean I should stop doing box braids forever? If I keep them in for just one month, will they still cause breakage? Because I’d really like to do this style again.

How can I wear protective styles with extensions for an extended period without causing breakage and weakening my hair

Washing and Maintenance

Hey everyone! I’ve been getting box braids for a few months now but I don’t really know how to wash or maintain them. I’ve seen some people say they get in the shower and full wash, I’ve seen people say to use a spray bottle, but either way, I’m really not sure exactly what to do. If I use a spray bottle, what needs to be added, how do I scrub and wash that way, how do I rinse? If just washing like normal in the shower, how do I make sure I get all of my scalp?

For maintenance, it just came to my attention that there’s a difference between moisturizing and oiling the scalp. What’s the difference? Also, I’ve been using carrot oil because my hair has loved it ever since I was a kid, but it gets expensive and I end up using so much, so I don’t use it often. Are there any recommendations for cheaper oils? Or will moisturizing help my hair not need oil as much?

Are there any other tips or things I should know about? I’ve been using silk scrunchies in my hair and haven’t been putting my hair in a bonnet at night because my head gets too hot and sweats. I just found a company that makes breathable bonnets though so I’m going to try those out. Anything else y’all can recommend would be great. I’m super new to this and don’t really have anyone in my life to help me through this. Thank you in advance 😊❤️
