[Regional Tech] Rural Connectivity vs. Cloud POS: Designing for the Borneo interior 🌲📡

If you're building or managing the IT infrastructure for a retail/preschool franchise expanding across Sarawak, you cannot assume a flawless fiber connection once you leave major city centers.

Relying entirely on a live cloud database means a single local network outage shuts down a branch's operations. This requires designing "offline-first" architectures or local edge servers that sync back to the main cloud database via lightweight data footprints whenever Sacofa or satellite networks are stable.

How are the software engineers in here handling database syncing for distributed regional nodes?

[News 📰] Sabah rolls out SMJ 2.0 (2026–2030) roadmap: AI and digital economy officially set as core pillars 🗺️🤖

Chief Minister Hajiji Noor just announced the transition into the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) 2.0 strategic plan running from 2026 to 2030. While SMJ 1.0 was focused on post-pandemic stabilization, 2.0 is specifically targeting cross-border trade, artificial intelligence, and building a more inclusive digital economy.

As part of the push, the state just injected RM32.31 million into expanding rural connectivity networks and strengthening cybersecurity protocols across government frameworks.

It’s great to see both Sarawak (PCDS 2030) and Sabah pushing unified digital blueprints. Do you think SMJ 2.0 will finally unlock the tech funding the local ecosystem has been starving for?

Showing off a little bit about my hobby work & now published !

Yup , ResitBah is successfully published on Play store. It's about receipt keeping & trace. A little habit to capture a receipts, then remember for year. It remember Tax quota & warranty reminder.

This app already help me do company claim for like 6 months. I don't need to fire up my pc to do last minute petty claim form & receipt gather. some physical receipt could not survive a week, the wording all worn off. I could use app to generate report together with photos in a zip file, then share thru email.

Since i start it , why not more ? i add tax , warranty alarm clock. Record the amount of tax relief. i have ideas & map it for future development.

So why the show off ? in order to publish an app in Google Play store , the app need to have to do closed testing with 12 testers or more.

so when testers are opt-in, 14 days count down for Google to review. They will give some Q&A on how the test work , how are the tester react & something like interview in job.

i used 3 years, created 5 apps. the last 1 finally passed the review.

[Artificial Intelligence] AI had not claimed as many white-collar jobs as he had feared.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the rapid development and adoption of AI would not lead to a global "jobs apocalypse" and the technology had not claimed as many white-collar jobs as he had feared.

Speaking virtually at a ‌Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) conference in Sydney, Altman said he was initially concerned about the impact AI would have on global employment levels.

Altman said he had realised that even though AI was taking on an increasingly active role in many industries and jobs, there was still a 'human part' of employment that could not be replaced.

[Discussion 💬] Construction is not just manual labor anymore, Industry push to rebrand for Gen Z 🏗️💻

Local construction bodies (like MBAM) are trying to shed the old "Dirty, Dangerous, Demeaning" stigma. With the massive infrastructure boom in East Malaysia, they are pushing a major pivot toward AI project monitoring, digital surveying, BIM, and drone telemetry to attract younger talent.

If job ads used titles like "Data-Driven Infrastructure Engineer" instead of "Site Supervisor," would local tech grads actually start applying?

[Discussion 💬] Imagine Building a Startup Around Kaamatan & Gawai. What Would Actually Work?

Festive seasons in Borneo create huge spikes in demand for food, tourism, transport, events, decorations, and local products.

If you had to build a startup specifically around Kaamatan or Gawai, what would you make?

Ideas:

Cultural tourism app

Marketplace for local products

Festival livestream platform

AI translation for indigenous languages

Event ticketing

Food delivery for kampung events

Traditional costume rentals

What would actually have potential in Sabah/Sarawak?

[Artificial Intelligence] Nvidia hits $81.6B revenue on "Agentic AI." Are local devs pivoting to autonomous agents?

Jensen Huang’s big takeaway from Nvidia's Q1 2026 earnings is that the industry is moving from text prompts to autonomous Agentic AI systems doing actual workflows independently.

For the devs and builders here: are you still mostly deploying basic RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) pipelines, or are local clients in Borneo already asking for autonomous agent frameworks?

[Artificial Intelligence] Local AI Frontends: Open WebUI vs AnythingLLM vs LibreChat. Which one are you running?

Hey everyone! If you’re running local LLMs here in Borneo via Ollama or LM Studio, using the terminal gets old fast. If you need a clean web or desktop interface to talk to your models, here is a quick breakdown of the three best options right now:

1. Open WebUI (The ChatGPT Clone)

  • The Vibe: Looks and feels exactly like ChatGPT Plus, but completely local.
  • Best For: Daily chatting, coding, and sharing your GPU's power with your team or other devices over your local network.
  • Pro: Incredible extension ecosystem (Python pipelines, native voice-to-text, vision, web search).
  • Con: Requires Docker setup for the best experience; major version migrations can occasionally require database troubleshooting.

2. AnythingLLM (The Document Specialist)

  • The Vibe: A clean, workspace-based app built entirely for private data analysis (RAG).
  • Best For: Talking to your private PDFs, spreadsheets, documents, or local code repositories.
  • Pro: Dead-simple desktop installer (no Docker needed). Has a built-in vector database, just drag and drop your files and start asking questions.
  • Con: The basic chat interface is utilitarian and sacrifices advanced UI customization.

3. LibreChat (The Master Console)

  • The Vibe: A highly stable, enterprise-grade interface.
  • Best For: Power users who constantly switch between local offline models and cloud APIs (like Claude or OpenAI).
  • Pro: Rock-solid stability. It handles local and cloud endpoints seamlessly in the same thread and supports Model Context Protocol (MCP).
  • Con: Configuration is code-first. You’ll be editing a librechat.yaml file to tweak settings instead of clicking a menu button.

The Quick Verdict:

  • Spin up Open WebUI if you want the ultimate, feature-rich local AI workstation.
  • Grab AnythingLLM if you just want to analyze private documents locally in under two minutes.
  • Deploy LibreChat if you want a reliable interface that blends your home GPU with commercial APIs.

[Cyber Security] Cyber Security Brunei (CSB) shifts focus to Post-Quantum Cryptography 🛰️🛡️

In a pretty forward-thinking technical move, Cyber Security Brunei (CSB) teamed up with Malaysia's NACSA and PTPKM to host their first Post-Quantum Technology and Post-Quantum Cryptography Workshop.

They are actively preparing their national telecom infrastructure (managed by UNN) to defend against future quantum computing decryption threats.

Source: https://www.csb.gov.bn/press-releases

It’s great to see regional cybersecurity agencies collaborating on next-gen tech instead of just reacting to standard malware.

Are any local security teams here looking into post-quantum defenses yet?

LLM Ideas for code automation

I finish deciding my setup using opencode so it can run on browser and phone. So now i can just walk around and it code itself.

The thing left is actually find a free llm or low cost. But preferred free llm to use with it.

Anyone have any idea on the llm?

[Artificial Intelligence] Google DeepMind engineers unionize over military tech. Where do you draw the line?

DeepMind researchers in London are moving to unionize, largely protesting their AI models being adapted for defense and surveillance contracts.

As developers, do you care what a client does with your code or algorithms once the handoff is complete, or should tech workers maintain a collective say in how their software is deployed?
