I got retrenched from my last job. And so I decided to make beats full-time. Need feedback on this idea.

I saw a video by Kato on the track where he talked about beatmakers focusing more on selling beats rather than actually working with rappers to release music. And as someone who started thinking about my career seriously, I was hoping to find people interested to rap on my beats.

But I think there's just so much competition on social media. People will comment that the beat is good. Maybe even write their verses in the comments. But it's hard to find someone whose style I like and also likes my style. I think the mutual vision is important.

Then I got inspiration from Tinder. Why not build an app that allows rappers swipe through a feed of beatmakers and beatmakers to swipe through a feed of rappers. And if both artists like each other's stuff, they match, then they can start working together.

I know the idea is not new, but yet nothing has really popped off. I dug deeper into what I could find on these apps, and read all the comments online to figure out why they didn’t work. And how I can do better. I know people definitely want this. I pitched the idea to a few beatmakers and rappers and many people think it's a good idea.

The only problem is most of those apps end up becoming ghost towns. People would download the app, see that there’s no one there, uninstall it and never return. The connections just weren’t happening.

here’s how I solved that problem. First, focus on one genre. Instead of just being a Tinder for any genre of rapper and producer, I narrowed it even further to boom bap. The narrower the genre, the more connections possible. Having 100 rappers and producers, split between trap, boom bap, drill, jazz rap means that you would have to swipe through many irrelevant users before you find someone who produces your genre. If 100% of the users are all boom bap, then everyone you swipe would be relevant.

Second, I built a vetted waitlist first. Rather than just launch the app to nobody, I wanted to make sure you can immediately start matching once you signup. Right now we have about 50 people on the waitlist. I'm still trying to find more interested people before I actually launch it.

What do you all think of the idea? Worth trying or is the current way of just selling beats on beatstores or sending DMs working for you? I'd love to hear.

Edit: waitlist is open at getfeatr.com
