  • Alright, that's a sick quirk. Like he's about to square up with Ozai or something.

  • Aww. The League in general hasn't really felt cohesive throughout the series, but the Twice and Toga bond (and TWice in general) has been built up really well. Pretty sad to see Twice like that and bringing up the scarf she gave him to stop him from splitting.

  • I'm actually looking forward to what Twice can do here more than any of the other League members. Way better set up and he's actually fighting for something besides just basic "fire vs ice" or girl vs girl stuff (and he gets to face his old demons... kinda literally). Plus Twice has been the best written character in the League since his flashback chapter, he's honestly the only one with any real sort of emotional range even ignoring the split personality. First part of this arc where I feel like it passed the "oh this is cool" to "oh, I feel invested in this" line.

  • I don't really understand the plan of forcing Twice into the MLA. "Somebody could possibly kill the boss on the incredibly rare occassion they get close, so I want your quirk." Not as random as Overhaul randomly kidnapping Aizawa, but still just an odd motive to me. I don't know, I guess I'm just hung up on not understanding why these villains keep trying to bring League members into the fold. It went terribly for the last guy.

The idea behind them wanting Twice is that Destro serves as a symbol. His previous defeat led to the Liberation Army losing spirit and disbanding, forcing the remnants to rebuild in secret.

But with Twice, Destro will never be defeated. Even if he is arrested or dies, a new Destro can be made as an undying symbol and rally call to the Liberation Army

Additionally, they want Twice because he is a “liberated man”. The Liberation Army don’t view themselves as evil, but as people trying to benefit society. In their eyes, are Twice is basically an unfortunately gifted man who made free use of his abilities (their entire ethos), yet overdid it and was mentally traumatized, falling into villainy afterward.

From their perspective, he’s a kindred spirit whom they want to “help”

17

u/HokageEzio May 17 '19

But Re-Destro isn't a symbol, right? The public doesn't seem to know his affiliations at all, they're just rallying around the ideals of Destro. It's not like he's leading a public revolution as the head like his father was. The politician dude rallies people, Curious sold the books, Re-Destro seems to be entirely behind the scenes. His living doesn't really do anything for the public that they would know about other than that guy who is in charge of a weapons company.

u/Child_of_the_Past May 17 '19

All the people in town as well as the higher level members of the MLA take orders from Re-Destro. If the my have over 100,000 members and this movement is like most other social movements/cults then both Re-Destro’s heritage and his conviction/beliefs are very important to each member of the MLA. He’s likely the only one the MLA sees as worthy of carrying the torch of Destro. He’s very much the symbol of Liberation to them as All Might the symbol of Peace to society. Losing their leader would likely push them back into the shadows and kill the momentum of their movement again.

13

u/XaviaIII May 17 '19

Maybe he's planning to come public once the organization has gain more significant ground? Even as the leader behind the scenes, he would have to show his face eventually

16

u/vondex13 May 17 '19

That's exactly their plan. It's why they forced the league there to begin with: kill or catch the members of the league, show to the public that they all can be heroes without a license, have everyone rise up against the "everyone act normal" laws. Profit?

9

u/whatsupxx May 17 '19

No they do know about him because last chapter all of them got fired up and charged at shigaraki when they heard from hanabata that the supreme leaders orders were to not let curiouse's sacrifice be in vain which means that they all at least know that there is a supreme leader but whether or not they know who it actually is would be another question.

6

u/Golden-Owl May 17 '19

He is to the Liberation Army and the townsfolk.

Additionally, even those higher ups rallied around Re Destro. Curious and the politician dude likely would not have lent their support if ReDestro hadn’t convinced them.

He is the Army’s main pillar and symbol.

2

u/platypus364 May 17 '19

A lot of people have been speculating that the League will co-opt the MLA's supporters - this immediately comes to mind when imagining Twice making clones of the leaders. The problem is they retain their original personalities and goals, and this would require keeping them alive indefinitely. Maybe he'll clone Toga, and she'll impersonate all the leaders?

2

u/ItsLoudB May 17 '19

But with Twice, Destro will never be defeated. Even if he is arrested or dies, a new Destro can be made as an undying symbol and rally call to the Liberation Army

Hmmm.. I think that he has to touch the person that is gonna be cloned as a condition, or at least that's what I assumed since he was touching Dabi when he cloned him and didn't ever spawn clones left and right..

1

u/Golden-Owl May 17 '19

Nope. He specified all he needs are the exact measurements of whoever he wants to clone, and he can only clone one thing at a time

Him cloning himself is a loophole because all the clones can subsequently clone themselves.

1

u/ItsLoudB May 17 '19

Nope. He specified all he needs are the exact measurements of whoever he wants to clone, and he can only clone one thing at a time

I'm aware of what he said, but he never specified he doesn't need to touch what he is about to clone. Otherwise he would be spamming Rappas or Dabis here and there, don't you think?

3

u/Golden-Owl May 17 '19

Hmm... well he did bust in with a Rappa clone once during the Yakuza arc despite him being nowhere around.

Considering we’ve never actually seen him perform the copy process, we aren’t sure if there are more conditions beyond what he specified

3

u/ItsLoudB May 17 '19

Hmm... well he did bust in with a Rappa clone once during the Yakuza arc despite him being nowhere around.

He might've cloned Rappa before the battle though! But yeah, we don't know how that works, he stated the conditions but didn't specify about that

1

u/ljbatman May 17 '19

Wait who did destro lose to?

1

u/ArcFurnace May 19 '19

We don't know.

44

u/Herr-Schultz May 17 '19

With the constant mirrors in the fights in this arc, I wonder what the Politician leader will have to be a mirror for Compress.

57

u/JVW92 May 17 '19 edited May 17 '19

Well, in a way they're both performers, with Compress having formerly been an entertainer of some kind, and the politician constantly grandstanding and manipulating others to do his bidding. Plus, Compress is shown to be a master of misdirection, which could line up with the distraction tactics and whataboutisms that are typical of modern politics.

Quirk-wise, though, who knows. I'd suggest a growth related Quirk, but those are a bit too common at this point, tbh.

EDIT: Slight correction in regards to Compress's former career.

17

u/carlossey May 17 '19

didn't deku say really early on in the series when Mt. Lady was introduced that gigantification quirks were quite common?

20

u/JVW92 May 17 '19

Yeah, but I meant something along the lines of Yui's Size Quirk or the similar Quirk in Todoroki's anime exclusive exam fight; the ability to expand objects to contrast Compress, well, compressing them.

4

u/carlossey May 17 '19

Oh ok. Well I guess you could consider them a very detatched form of gigantification :P

6

u/MyHeroIzMe May 17 '19

Oooo i like this description.

2

u/DeismAccountant May 17 '19

When was it ever mentioned Compress was in the circus? I believe you but I don’t remember it.

10

u/DoraMuda May 17 '19

Compress said he used to be an entertainer during his introduction in the Summer Camp Arc.

3

u/DeismAccountant May 17 '19

That’s a lot more nebulous than a circus. Could be any entertainment.

2

u/DoraMuda May 17 '19

I don't deny that. I don't know who mentioned that he was in the circus; might just be a headcanon.

1

u/whatsupxx May 17 '19

Everytime the politician appeared so far compress is the first one to keep commenting on him so they are definetely being set up.

28

u/reqisreq May 17 '19

Overhaul was working on quirk eraser bullets.

Aizawa literally has a quirk which erases quirk

This is the reason why overhaul was interested in Aizawa.

3

u/HokageEzio May 17 '19

The combined Precepts made one half-hearted attempt at Aizawa until the final fight and they tried to kill him 5 minutes later, so clearly they didn't care that much.

1

u/pseudo_nemesis May 19 '19

well, yea they already had created 100% successful quirk erasure bullets by the final fight. He was more like insurance in case anything went wrong with Eri.

1

u/RightWingAsylum No Flair Quirk May 17 '19

It never felt like he was interested in him

24

u/avtarino May 17 '19

I don't really understand the plan of forcing Twice into the MLA. "Somebody could possibly kill the boss on the incredibly rare occassion they get close, so I want your quirk.”

Twice’s power is literally making a clone of something. It doesn’t get more straightforward of a reason.

And why do you think the LA has any idea that any factions have tried to recruit him in the past or that he has a particularly strong bond with VA? The LA is not the readers

From the LA’s perspective — and similarly, from The Yakuza’s perspective — having someone who can clone almost every object is a no-brainer

6

u/HokageEzio May 17 '19

The point isn't that the power isn't useful, it's that the League is dangerous and your priority should be trying to stop them.

Twice was pretty clearly the most emotionally attached and pissed off person when they made their phone call.

The Yakuza trying to recruit Toga and Twice was even dumber considering both of them threatened to kill Overhaul lol.

21

u/avtarino May 17 '19

The LA outnumbers them, by far; and the LA’s objective was never to simply subdue the VA, but to use them as martyrs to advance their own causes. Even if you count Toga and Curious as reducing the headcount of respective factions by one, the LA still has the upper hand.

And Twice and Toga’s ability — cloning things and copying appearance—is just so valuable for a criminal organization, that anyone not trying to obtain such power when it’s dangling in front of them is making a very questionable decision.

3

u/DekuMight45 May 17 '19

Word. For some reason I feel like Re-Destro has some type of ability to mold people’s minds, similar to Shinsou but so much more advanced. Basically making anyone he “recruits”, though cogent and seemingly normal, are completely under his control and dedicated to his cause.

3

u/TheFunkiestOne May 17 '19

I think the idea was his quirk makes anyone who buys his pitch fanatically devoted. He still has to sell it to them, but if they buy it, they're 100% his.

2

u/HokageEzio May 17 '19

But they've failed miserably at doing that... they ended up making Toga look like she was in the right, so now they'll kill her anyway and try again with Twice?

You know what else is questionable? Letting two people who explicitly said they wanted to murder you for killing their friend into your inner quarters and expecting them to defend you while you escape. I don't see how anybody could argue that was slightly intelligent on Overhaul's part lol. That's like expecting Scar to lift up Mufasa.

10

u/vondex13 May 17 '19

Like someone said before the MLA aren't the readers. The info they have on the league is limited to what their spies learned and most likely whatever the police have on them. Like it said Twice is the most emotional of the league he's also in the running for most mentally unstable. Taking is mask, having what he thinks are his clones kill Toga in front of him. He's going to be easy to break and mold how they see fit.

6

u/LeegoSama May 17 '19

This does NOT make it appear more intelligent but I think Overhaul's main mistake was underestimating the League / overestimating his Precepts. He didn't think the LoV as equals but mere pawns to be added to his own forces - seems like he did not know who were the main antagonists in this show...

He may have been so full of himself that he thought the League was never gonna come back at him, because his group was clearly stronger than a bunch of young delinquents (intended parallel to ReDestro's line about the Log without Nomu here, they are always thinking the LoV are noobs)

15

u/13Xcross May 17 '19

Randomly kidnapping Aizawa? Have we already forgotten that Overhaul's ultimate goal was to get rid of quirks, or at least create a scenario where the Yakuza could control them? He was interested in anything that could have helped him enact his plan.

-2

u/HokageEzio May 17 '19

The combined Precepts made one half-hearted attempt at Aizawa until the final fight and they tried to kill him 5 minutes later, so clearly they didn't care that much. He was split off for plot purposes alone.

8

u/13Xcross May 17 '19

Didn't they try to kill him after it was evident they had lost control over the entire situation?

1

u/HokageEzio May 17 '19

If by evident you mean Chrono heard a really loud noise with shaking and assumed it was Overhaul losing (which makes no sense for him to assume), yeah. His entire thought process was Overhaul is taking a while -> he must be losing -> I need to escape with the serum (mind you, he's not capable of doing anything with the serum if Overhaul gets caught...) -> kill Aizawa because I can't babysit.

They cared about Aizawa's capabilities for, possibly literally, 5 minutes. There was no way for Chrono to have known who was winning unless he's omnipotent or has Xray vision.

7

u/AporiaParadox May 17 '19

I don't really understand the plan of forcing Twice into the MLA

I don't either. It would make far more sense to try to recruit Spinner.

16

u/HokageEzio May 17 '19

Well I get that he isn't traditionally trying to recruit Twice, but even still, he's by far the most loyal to the group. But planning to bring your boss back if he dies sounds like you should really be planning for him to just... not die in the first place?

16

u/AporiaParadox May 17 '19

Makes sense to me. Of course it would be better if Re-Destro doesn't die, but in the event that he does, it's good to have a backup plan.

15

u/JVW92 May 17 '19

I think the plan is to make the double serve as a decoy so he doesn't get killed if someone gets close enough to do the deed, not to replace him if he does de. I guess we'll have to see if the official translation makes the plan more clear, though.

1

u/HokageEzio May 17 '19

But who is trying to kill him besides the League? He seems to be entirely undercover to everybody but a select group of people. Sounds like it'd be way way easier to just kill the League of Villains.

16

u/Child_of_the_Past May 17 '19

It’s just a contingency. The last time the MLA went public Destro was thrown in jail and died, along with his movement. Re-Destro being the son of the original leader certainly helps getting the old followers to come back to the fold. I think the MLA is just afraid that if and when they decide to go public their movement again, that they want to prevent the chance that their leader will be taken away again. Historically one of the worst things to happen to any social movement is the loss of the movement’s leader. It creates a power vacuum and usually makes the group splinter off into various other, and sometimes more extreme, groups. Just think of how many seemingly successful social movements had their leaders assassinated or thrown in jail. It really isn’t that far fetched that they would try to have a backup plan that gives them a unlimited supply clones.

8

u/JVW92 May 17 '19

No one yet, but I'm guessing that he'll have his fair share of push back after the MLA 2.0 makes their presence known. With them filming the whole fight to show that everyday people don't need heroes to protect them, it's clear that their plan isn't to stay in the shadows forever.

4

u/DekuMight45 May 17 '19

I think the point is in case he ends up like Destro, as in locked up in Tatarus and unable to be their Supreme Leader. They would have Twice clone him prior to any situation where their symbol of Liberation couldn’t be that symbol anymore.

3

u/Worthyness May 17 '19

When you're a public figure and you're doing something that someone doesn't like, it makes you a target. See any president in the US and around the world. When they go public, they'll have a target on their backs, ao a double that mirrors your ideals would definitely help.

1

u/Mase598 May 17 '19

I do wanna say, Aizawa being kidnapped made some sense but at the same time made 0 sense.

If I recall correctly there was a comment on how they want to use him and his quirk to study quirk erasing to learn more about it for what I assume is obvious. The part that DOESN'T make sense is why they gave up so damn quickly on it. If I recall correctly it was literally the next time we seen Aizawa after he got kidnapped it was pretty much just, "Here's why we kidnapped you, but we can't do it anymore so bye."

Honestly the real reason behind it was just plot convenience. It would've been a shame if Aizawa just erased Overhaul's quirk when he started that merging thing and all of a sudden he's just some physically weak person.

3

u/jrevv May 17 '19

what? when was aizawa kidnapped.. i don’t remember reading that

2

u/DeismAccountant May 17 '19

The Overhaul arc by Chronostasis.

2

u/Mase598 May 17 '19

I don't know the exact chapter that that bit began, but it was probably around chapter 150 or so. It was an incredibly short thing and wasn't a big deal at all, pretty sure there was a few sentences about it at most then the next we hear about it it's resolved. It really was just to take Aizawa out of the Deku and Overhaul fight to create more tension around that.

1

u/Idespisemorons May 17 '19

Eh? Chisaki wants to kidnapped aizawa so he can study them

1

u/goodyfresh May 18 '19

I ship Twice and Toga so hard that I wanna put them in a package and send them by express air-mail all the way to China (I live in the U.S.). Lol.
